We have been at Almaden Country School for 10 years. It is an exceptional learning community which prepares students to be responsible & engaged citizens. The school fosters critical thinking, respect and mentoring as evident in a school-wide big buddy program where older students are paired with younger students.

The ACS faculty and administration consider parents as partners in the development and character building so important in these early formative years. The teachers are passionate educators who truly love to teach.

Opinions matter, whether youre a parent or a student. When my son wanted to start a club, he had the latitude to do so and the support of his teachers and peers. Were very impressed with the academic curriculum and experiential aspect of both core and elective classes, as well as field trips and weeklong Middle School trips which offer great opportunities for our kids to learn outside the classroom. In the last few years, ACS Athletics has developed into an excellent program. Its a great pre-cursor to high school athletic competition.

My wife and I looked at many different schools for our son, not sure if we would find the right fit or even if we should pursue public or private. There are too few times in life where theres a single right decision, but we knew when we met the people and students of Almaden Country School that this was exactly the right place. Many schools could use similar language about developing the unique talents in each student and fostering a love of learningbut ACS makes that real. We love ACS. We love the strength of the academics balanced with the focus on developing confident, flexible, curious, engaged individuals who think outside themselves. We love the tradition of each grade putting on a play each year. Weve found friends with similar values in the other parents, while also appreciating a vibrant culture with a good exchange of ideas that leads to a constantly improving ACS. The teachers are absolutely dedicated to the kids and constantly becoming better at what they do. Simply, were really happy. Our son is, too.

Of course we feel that Almaden Country School is an amazing school for our children. We have been at ACS for nine years now. The community is welcoming and provides a nurturing environment where the students and faculty thrive. But you can't help and wonder if it is it enough. Are our children learning the skills they need to get into a great high school of their choice? Once there, are they able to keep up with their peers? After recently attending open houses at St Francis HS and Presentation HS, the answers were apparent. Almaden Country School graduates have a presence. They are not only attending these top high schools; they are leaders there. It was reassuring to speak with the ACS alum at both schools. They continue to thrive with confidence and ease. It is not a coincidence that these great kids are doing so well, especially when they refer to their ACS experience as a contributing factor to their success. I could go on and on about the fabulous programs at ACS which have truly enriched our children, but there is great comfort knowing that ACS is preparing them for their long educational journey which lies ahead of them!

I am an alum of Almaden Country School and was one of the first students when the school first opened in the early 80's. I attended the school from Kindergarten through 5th grade and have such fond memories at the school like playing on the blacktop, walking in the annual Halloween parade, and performing with my classmates during the school plays. The smaller class sizes and curriculum coupled with exceptional teachers played a significant role in laying the foundation and building blocks for my educational and professional career.

20 years later and still living in the area it was now my turn to pick an elementary school for my son. Immediately Almaden Country School came to mind, but I felt I had to verify if the core values and overall "feeling" I had when I was a child were still in tact. After a very hospitable tour and evaluation of the school, I walked away with a renewed confidence that my son would be in good hands at ACS. It is hard to put into words, but when you are on the school grounds something just feels "right." Walking through the halls, joyful memories and experiences that were tucked away resurfaced and I felt the same special aura that I had felt years ago. It is pretty amazing that after so many years the traditions, values, and spirit of the school are still there.

I now have two sons enrolled at Almaden Country School, and have witnessed them develop into well-rounded people both, academically and socially, as a result of the school's teachings and values. I highly recommend Almaden Country School to any family. The care, development, and individual attention your child will receive is paramount and unmatched in the area.

Almaden Country School is incredible. We've been at the school for three years, with two children enrolled. Here is a letter I wrote to the ACS Head of School last week:

I wanted to share with you how ACS has been impacting my life in the past 24-48 hours in a positive way.
I know it's a testament to the culture and leadership of ACS thanks to you, your staff and students.

1- My son attended pre-school with a different organization last year. Each morning he would ask if he had school. If he heard "yes" he would moan woefully and drag himself out of bed. This same kid now pops out of bed in the morning, well into the school year, and is consistently VERY excited to be going to class. That includes today after a not so good nights sleep. Thanks goes to his fabulous teachers.

2-My daughter has a love of learning that is so incredibly joyful to watch. She LOVES to read and grabs books off of shelves whenever she can. She enjoys math and talks highly of the fun she has in class solving problems. Tonight, at Whole Foods, we had dinner before heading to her Starmites recital. She ate her dinner quickly just so she could read me a book. As she read it, she was laughing at the story and picking up the humor and nuance of the characters and situations. She would rather read than eat! Her love of learning is the product of the ACS teachers who have touched her life these past three years.

3- Tonight, just before the Starmites concert, I came upon the drama director. She had just taken an unfortunate tumble in the parking lot. She was banged up but with the help of your admissions officer, who was working late in the office, she was taken care of. The other drama teacher let the Starmites know what had happened and called upon them to lead themselves in the hand movements for the concert (since their director was unable to do so). The students were concerned for their injured teacher and yet took on their new responsibility very well. They wanted to make her proud.

4- As the Starmites entered the auditorium they were thrilled to see their director, sitting in her chair, ready to lead them. I know 20 year olds who would've gone home after half the tumble she endured. The show went on, without a hitch, and the students are parents were thrilled.

There are jobs, professions and callings.

When I see how excited my kids are to attend ACS, when I interact with parents and students who are thrilled to be with ACS and then get to see, first hand, the dedication of your staff... I know that my kids, and all the students of ACS, are lucky enough to be surrounded by people answering their calling. That is awesome and inspiring.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Beach

We have two boys in ACS, entering 5th and 2nd grade. They have been with ACS from Kindergarten.

When our oldest son was still in diapers we intentionally moved to a neighborhood that had great public elementary schools. However, when it came time to choose an elementary school, we looked at both our public school system and all of the local private schools. Almaden Country School really stood out amongst some great choices. People ask me why ACS? Its two things, ACS is what well-rounded education should be. Arts, music, drama, science, foreign language and PE coupled with the ??three R??s?, all taught by very passionate and uniquely qualified teachers. Secondly, ACS teaches the children to be great human beings. They learn team work by building robots together and other projects. They learn community and a sense of tradition by school outings that promote working together to create something larger than the one child alone. I have also found that this strong community of parents and teachers sometimes helps you in turn to be a better parent as well. ACS is a great school and a great community, would definitely recommend.

We picked Almaden because we believe children need to be in an environment that nurtures their creativity, instead of only teaching reading and math. Our world is changing so fast we can't possibly know what kinds of careers will be important in the future, so it's critical that children learn how to think (versus how to take a test). Almaden focuses on a love of learning that is geared specifically to each child's type of intelligence. We couldn't be happier.
We have enrolled both of our kids at Almaden and they are both thriving!

We have two daughters at Almaden Country School (Beginder + 2nd grade) and we are constantly impressed by every aspect of the school. From the strong academics to the incredible enrichment programs, this school offers a warm, caring environment where kids get to be kids. The teachers are passionate, the parents involved and the kids thriving; what more could a parent want?

Almaden Country School (ACS) is the most exceptional place! Our daughter is a fountain of possibilities. After horrific experiences with the local public school system here in San Jose we searched for a school that would allow our daughter to reach her full potential and still experience the joys of childhood. ACS has provided that and more. ACS offers excellence in science, language, art, drama, and music.
The teachers are wonderful, dedicated people who genuinely love their work and the children. We find all of the administration, staff, and faculty to be of exceptional quality. They are exceedingly dedicated to the "Country School Way" and are focused on bringing out "the gift in every child".
If you want the best education and preparation for life for your child PLEASE check out ACS. They have several Open House events per year that will astound you with their dedicated teachers and parents!
Dr. Ole Jorgenson is new to ACS this year as Head of School. He brings an amazing amount of experience, talent, and success from his previous work.
If you want to know more, look at their website, call the school, and come to an Open House event.

You have to visit ACS and see the students, to appreciate it! From the youngest to the oldest, the children are happy, they feel safe and valued, they are really confident, and they enjoy learning. We like that the curriculum includes drama at every level (maybe that??s in part why the children are so poised), foreign language, and hands-on science. We also believe in the strong emphasis on citizenship and family, and love the closeness of the families at school. The other parents really made us feel at home in our first year and it hasn??t stopped since. Don??t expect to be wowed by the campus, though. It??s older, and the facilities are just adequate compared to some of the other area schools with brand new buildings, but the teachers are fabulous and our daughter is happier than she??s ever been ?? she looks forward to school every day! The academics are solid at ACS, and the program gets more demanding starting in about third grade, but there is not a lot of emphasis or pressure or competition for grades and test scores, which we like ?? what they??re doing works though. This year, I think every eighth grader who applied to Presentation, Bellarmine, and Notre Dame got in! But for sure, you need to go to the school, and see the happy children, to have a glimpse of what makes ACS special compared with the other schools in the area.

Our daughter will be starting her 6th year at Almaden Country School in September. We are extremely pleased with every aspect of her development as a result of attending this wonderful school. ACS offers the perfect combination of developmentally-appropriate academics, comprehensive enrichment programs (art, science, P.E., drama, foreign language, music, etc.), individual attention, community spirit and parental involvement. Our daughter is ALWAYS happy to go to school - and we are always happy to become involved in the various volunteer opportunities that exist. It is a happy, warm, welcoming place to be. There is a quality that exists at this school that is hard to find elsewhere... an actual joy of learning! We are confident that ACS is preparing our child for a successful future in every way.

We have been extremely pleased with the educational experience our children have received at Almaden Country School. My daughter started in the 4-year olds program seven years ago. She'll be entering 8th grade in the fall. We also have a son entering 6th grade. Both kids enjoy learning and going to school. They have not only grown academically but also as people, since the curriculum is rounded out with various enrichment classes like drama, music, art and such. We like that the environment is nurturing and a little less "worldly" than at some schools, so that the children are able to hang onto their childhood a bit longer. ACS is well-worth the tuition.

We have a son entering third grade and a daughter leaving the pre-K program and entering Kindergarten at ACS. We see in our kids the things we noticed in the children we observed when we were touring ACS four years ago: joyful spirit, self-confidence, and a love for learning. The families are a lot of fun to be around (which makes volunteering a blast, even for the Dads!) and our entire family continues to nurture fantastic friendships with more people each year. Kids at ACS develop an inquisitiveness for life and learning while developing and respecting early-on their role as community members and team players. We love this school.

Our sons have been attending ACS since preschool and we are extremely pleased with the developmental approach to learning that is core to the school's philosophy. The learning environment is safe, which encourages children to challenge themselves without the risk of being judged. We have witnessed our boys' self-confidence emerge and blossom as a result. The school's enrichment programs--which include drama--along with the small class sizes, are part of what make this school so special. Although the school is non-sectarian, our family also enjoys a great sense of community that comes from the high level of participation of so many like-minded parents. We plan on keeping our sons in ACS through 8th grade. The school is simply a wonderful foundation for future success no matter how you measure it: academically or socially.

Our daughter has attended ACS since preschool (she's now in fourth grade). We initially enrolled her in preschool, intending to move to the public school for kindergarten. It was a very hard decision to keep her in a private school, because the public schools in this area are very good. Several factors convinced us to stay: 1. Personal values such as citizenship, respect and kindness are part of the curriculum. I went to excellent schools, but never heard a word about personal values in 16 years of education. 2. The teachers are amazing. You have never met a group of teachers more dedicated to your child's welfare in your life. One of the enrichment teachers always says, "Thank you for the privilege of working with your child," and she means it! 3. Enrichment classes: Art, music, science, and more. Our daughter comes home excited about a new art technique she learned at school. 4. Remember how stressful and awkward junior high was? The middle school kids at ACS look you in the eye and smile. Amazing. The last factor above was a real revelation for me. Middle school is not a happy time for families. At ACS, those awkward years are much happier and less stressful. Parental involvement is very high, which is always a good thing. A small number of parents have complained that the academics are not rigorous enough, especially when compared with another private school that has an extremely aggressive (and stressful!) academic program. We were initially concerned about this, until we learned that the test scores at ACS are at the top of the charts. ACS uses a fundamentals-based curriculum that does not focus on test scores, but instead on fundamentals, so that the child has a deep understanding of the concepts. When I was a child, I attended public schools in New York (the best in the nation at the time) and a private school in Florida. All taught math using rigorous repetition. At ACS, our daughter was taught fundamental concepts at a very young age (what does seven marbles look like? What does five marbles look like? How are they different?) The result? She learned her times tables more than a year earlier than I did as a child. She started learning pre-algebra concepts in third grade. That kind of advantage adds up. We are enthusiastic fans of Almaden Country School. We are looking forward to having a smiling child in a couple of years when she enters middle school there.

We are looking forward to having a smiling child in a couple of years when she enters middle school there.

.

The outstanding features of ACS is that students learn to be critical thinkers rather than learning from teaching to the test. My daughter attended grades 4 -8, and received an outstanding education that included a myriad of electives. The classes are small 15 - 18 students, and every students has a personal learning plan that follows them through each grade. Integrity and honesty are taught from day one, and I'm amazed at how confident and poised most of the students become. My son went to Bret Harte and we were somewhat disappointed in their curriculum, the huge class sizes, the lack of electives, and emphasis on testing over critical thinking.

PROS: Great Education
CONS: It's expensive
