If you love nothing else but coffee, then you better try this coffee shop. Unlike others that offer varities, this one concentrates on the quality of their coffee blends. That's why I love them!

The place is organized and clean, perfect for meetings or simply having a great talk with your friends. When you order here, ask for their blend of the month. I'm sure you'll love it.

I currently live about two blocks from this place up at Loyola. They have great coffee and tea, and you won't be disappointed with anything that you order. The cafe has a LOT of seating and is perfect for studying, reading, chatting, or just hanging out. It is busy most of the times that I am there but the service moves quickly. The staff is also very friendly and great at making coffee. A definite must for anyone living near here.

Artisan coffee on Chicago's North side. A must for coffee lovers, this great cafe is full of excellent coffee roasted on German Probats and brewed fresh. Won Roast Magazine's Micro-Roaster of the year in 2007. Some roasting takes place in-house, which is great if you love the smell of freshly roasted coffee while sipping a cup of the same.

Metropolis has wonderful coffee and a small assortment of food items. The staff is always very friendly. It's a great atmosphere for studying or hanging out with friends. I recommend their almond croissants and the 3-cheese panini!

This is the place to go once you're ready to move beyond the chains of starbuck's, caribou, and whatever else is out there. With knowledgeable buristas, this company strives to be authentic and unlike any of the large coffee chains. Everything is made fresh, and I highly recommend the chai tea. This place is very legit. They offer free wireless internet connections, and their products are competitive with those of starbucks. Highly Recommended!

So the first thing you notice when you walk in is that there's a rather large area behind the counter where you place your order. That's not because the barista need room to run. It's because there are bags and bags of fresh-roasted beans there. I've been known to go miles out of my way to get a cup at this place. There's lots of people I know that do the same thing, so you get a nice mix of Loyola students and other folks that come here strictly for the brew. Delicious, and it'll keep you awake for your travels back south.

I moved into an apartment building right around the corner from Metropolis in September of 07. I had never been there before, and waited about a month or two before checking it out for the first time.

I've been back almost every day since then.

The espresso and coffee beans are all roasted on site, and the finished product drinks are phenomenal. I hadn't had a cappucino that even compares to their work since my last trip to Paris. There is lots of room and the space is comfortable and well-decorated. The customer service is neighborly and quick - only ever suffering when they are understaffed, which happens so infrequently, it's hardly worth mentioning. Even the tea list is great.
It you live in the neighboorhood - make this place a part of your life. If you're not from around here, make a point to come up and visit. You most surely will not be disappointed.

I have been a regular ever since I discovered it. The coffee is amazing- better than Intelligensia for sure. And it's strong. Great study atmosphere, lots of tables and free wireless is always a plus. My bones to pick are- even when it's like 90 outside, I have to wear a jacket inside because it is often pretty cold inside. I see other people in short sleeve shirts though, so maybe it's just me. Secondly, I'm convinced one barista hates me. She forgot to add flavoring once- at least it tasted that way- so I went up and politely asked if I could have more. Ever since, she glares at me and my drinks made by her have had an amazingly overpowering taste of flavoring syrup, or none at all. I haven't said anything about it since and just deal with it. I guess that's a testament to how much I love this place.

Cons: it's cold

In just about any other city on the planet, Metropolis would be the #1 cafe in town by a wide margin. Unfortunately, Chicago is also home to Intelligentsia and their three retail locations. And while there's no argument about the quality of Metropolis' espresso and coffee offerings and skills, Intelly wins head-to-head because it's as good on those levels and has better service top to bottom, in my opinion.

I'll qualify by noting I'm just an occasional visitor to town, and have only been here twice so maybe it's just my bad luck. It's not the easiest place to get to if you're in town for events at Navy Pier or McCormick... so by the time I actually get all the way up there, I'm anticipating something supremely awesome and just didn't feel I got a warm welcome on either trip.

Because I'm usually downtown when visiting Chicago, I naturally spend more time at Intelly.

I've been going to Metropolis since I moved to Chicago. Was a time I would hang out late at night at Standee's Diner. Loved their coffee. "What kind is it?" I asked. "Metropolis," the guy behind the counter said. Turned out it was Samba blend, still my favorite. The lattes and iced mochas are wonderful, although the hot mochas are often not as chocolaty as I would prefer.

The staff are always very nice, and try to remember your name.

When not completely jammed with Loyola students and little kids running around, the dining area is very relaxed. With the demise of the bookstore next door, now there is more seating, which is very nice.

Advice: If you want a small drink, like just espresso or a con panna, drink it there. Even if you are in a hurry. It'll just take a moment to gulp down, and you won't waste a paper cup or two. I learned my lesson when I got a con panna to do. Walking to my car, a sudden gust of wind blew my lightweight drink away, which was resting inside another paper cup. I stood there, shocked, and holding an empty paper cup.

My only solace was that none of the baristas saw it, as they would have laughed and sneered. And they would have every right to.

There's a good reason Chicago Magazine voted Metropolis as the best latte in the city -- this coffee shop rules! Not only is this a great place to go and drink coffee and hang out in their newly expanded store, but it's also a great place to buy beans. They are roasted in-house and are of the highest quality. The blends are skillfuly mixed and roasted and the prices are better than what you would see in other bigger coffee chains. Food and Wine Magazine also rated it one of the 10 best coffee houses in the country! Stop by and see why! I'm sure you'll agree.

Upon entering Metropolis you realize that you are truly in a unique and delightful coffee shop. The prompt friendly service as you enter makes you feel right at home. Delicious pastry selection abound. The artwork on the walls provides visual excitement.

The furniture is funky yet comfortable and functional. You get to meet a variety of people including the owners Tony and Jeff. Each makes you feel special and right at home.

You can sit for hours with your laptop, with a good book, or talking and meeting new friends as you enjoy your coffee or tea and listen to great music.

A variety of live entertainment on different nights provides some unexpected enjoyment.

A great place to meet and spend time with strangers or special friends.

Metropolis Coffee Co has absolutely the best coffees and wide selection of bulk teas including greens, oolongs, herbals, rooibuses, blacks and even home-made chai, I've ever had. The coffees are always roasted perfectly-a wide variety from lightly roasted to beautiful (and sweet) darkroasts. Honestly, no other roaster comes close. This smallish company beats anythings here in Chicago and Seattle and The bay area. Metropolis Coffee Co is in a league of its own. I hope, as they grow, that their wonderful coffees and teas become widely recognized as incredibly good. I've watched them roast (through a window) and have cupped their coffees; oh yeh, they cup coffees every morning m-f at 9:15, and if you're interested you can participate. Wow!!!!!! Passionate and friendly- Metropolis, please adopt me!!!!

I love the coffee here. It is, by far, THE BEST coffee in the city of Chicago (from the roasted bean to the brewed cup). And I am a hard sell when it comes to coffee. The staff is trained extremely well on the espresso machine and they always add that meticulous extra touch in the presentation that I greatly appreciate. Most of the veteran staff and a few new ones are extremely personable, professional, and show a good deal of integrity in their work. However, watch out for some of the new post-slacker snobby young ones. I could do without their distaste for good working ethics, their inability to smile, as well as their desire to listen to really bad eighties music. What a bore. Hopefully, Jeff and Tony will pick up on that soon. Bottom line, the coffee is well worth the visit.

Metropolis, along with Intelligentsia, is making Chicago a name for itself in the high end specialty coffee scene. With attention to detail and same day shipping of it's outrageously well blended and roasted espresso, it rivals the very best that Seattle has to offer. I have sampled espresso from all over the U.S. and frequently have my favorites shipped to me. I'm currently stationed in Iraq making the best of it, but when a lb. of Redline and a lb. of Sgt. Schweiks' fell in my lap, I was in 7th heaven. Redline is superb espresso, smooth mouth, strong honey and spice tones, delicious aftertaste. Schweiks' is a bold, fruity North & East African blend with chocolate notes, cherries or blueberries. Both stand up to milk very well. Metropolis is a bunch of great people too. Can't wait to visit!

The staff is always very friendly even when you give them the wrong change (pre-caffeine) in the morning. This one of my favorite things about the up and coming Edgewater neighborhood! Between the welcoming ambience, friendly service, and the amazing coffee, this is my favorite place to go. The coffee is roasted perfectly, and they have something for everyone when it comes to roast. I love their spice island, samba, and redline roasts and use them at home. Their caramel mochas are decadent. And their iced vanilla latte's are perfect. Their jasmine green tea lattes are amazing, like walking through a garden. Their fruit iced tea is balanced between sweet, fruit, and tea, and my boyfriend swears by their homemade chai. We love to sit and soak up the ambience. Can't recommend this place enough.

Last weekend, as I was driving down 53rd Street on my way to Lake Shore and Metropolis, I chuckled to see the Starbucks on the corner. See, that Starbucks is less than a block away from my home, yet I was embarking on a 30 minute journey to get a cup of coffee. Can I make a more profound declaration of my love of Metropolis than that?

If you're fed up with the burnt taste of Starbucks and the over-crowded (as well as overrated) Intellegensia, You'll love this true American coffeehouse that brew's up what is rapidly becoming this city's favorite eye-opener beverage --- Metropolis Coffee.

I hope they are able to add more Metropolis locations in neighborhoods throughout Chicago.

Thank god for independent coffee shops like Metropolis. It is cozy and hip, with new cutting edge art on the walls every month. And they have a lot going on besides the art: live music, open mics, film screenings, and more. A nice change from Starbucks, they use fair trade coffee and roast in house. Jeff and Tony are friendly and social, always around to greet you. They know most of their customers on a first name basis. By the way, I use sugar in my lattes, but this is the first perfectly made latte that I ever enjoyed without sugar! I can't say enough goodness about Metropolis, I love it there!

There are coffee shops and then there are phenomenal coffee roasters who also have a retail store. Metropolis roasts every bean to perfection and the proof is in every cup of coffee or espresso that they serve. I never fail to go out of my way to stop by and pick up a double espresso that is perfectly drawn and enjoyed from the first smell of the bean to the last drop we can coax out of the cup. If you're only looking for a cup of regular coffee, don't bother with cream or sugar - it is best enjoyed straight up - it's amazing. Tony and Jeff could not have created a better legacy than Metropolis!

The baristas are hot. I'm not talking cute or hot in a mediocre tepid kind of way, but hot! Oh yeah, and they put pretty little rosettas in your drink, and then you feel special that these hot baristas put this pretty art in your latte. That's what I call service.

I just can't get enough, it is an addiction to the maximum.

Metropolis is off the map; much, much better coffees and espresso than I've had anywhere including Northern Italy, and I'm head roaster for a well known coffee chain from CA.

I loved Metropolis from the moment I walked in last June. It was here that I had my first latte with gorgeous latte art (thanks Bill!). Metropolis has wonderful coffee--no question. The lattes and capps are amazing. The customers are cool. And, now that I work at Metro, I know first hand how much the barista love and respect the beans, their customers, and each other.
There are other wonderful coffee shops in Chicago. However, I really think this is the best. Check it out.

I Have recently spent three months on tour in the Pacific, Asia, Europe and North America. Everywhere I travelled I found it hard to find good coffee. Would you believe that Starbucks actually was better than many local products. Its true. And then I arrived to live on Granville St. Down the road is Metropolis and I gave it my one time test - you only get one life with me. Not only did it pass - but with flying colours. I cannot recommend the coffee and the staff for their competence, friendliness and service. The young woman who actually does the brewing is a barrista beyond compare. I shall be back again and again.

Dear coffee lovers,

I am an european living in Chicago, and I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about Metropolis!!! It is Hands Down The BEST coffee house with the best coffee! As a coffee drinker for so many years I guess I have gotten used to the overroasted coffees of Starbucks, and the strangely tasting drip coffees I keep buying from the grocery stores because when I tasted the Metropolis coffee for the first time I was blown away by the taste! It was sooo smooth and not bitter at all! Just that wonderful coffee smell and taste that I love!

The cafe itself is just so esthetically pleasing that it almost blends in your consciousness. Everything from the special made coffee neon sign to the perfectly picked color of the walls just blends in order to create the athmosphere!

METROPOLIS ROCKS!

The owners are wam and genuine, and often walk around to chat with patrons. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Oh yeah, and their coffees and huge selection of teas are outstanding!

This little gem is the best coffee cafe in the city. Not only is the coffee top notch, but the vibe is comfortable with everybody, and I mean everybody, welcomed as a potential or exisiting friend by the owners and the staff. Stop by often enough and they'll call you by name. The seating is comfortable, the music is always choice, and everybody working seems to really care deeply about coffee and teas, and even what you may be reading. The staff is lively and personable with opinions, and a genuine creative vibe among them that doesn't touch on overbearing or false. And a number of the staff boys and girls are cute, cute, cute. Can you tell that I really like this place?

Metropolis coffee surpasses other Chicago roasters brew. And, they are happy to accomodate the true espresso aficionados. I like my americano the "real" way - EQUAL portions espresso to water - and they GET it. The staff and owners cultivate community; every customer is welcome and greeted with a familiar smile.
