My dog was very sick. Within one minute of entering Dr Carlsen's office, in the waiting area, my dog made a very definite deposit of a bloody diarrhea for all to see as if announcing "OK, now. THIS IS WHY I'M HERE." The vet tech came out and told me what would need to be done initially as far as blood work, IV fluids, etc. Then someone took a sample of my dog's deposit and cleaned up the rest of the mess while someone else quickly escorted my dog to the back area. In a minute, Dr Carlsen came out and gave me an estimate of costs to implement life-saving measures and I agreed to the approximate range of costs. I was instructed to call back in a couple of hours to find out if my dog could be picked up or might need to be transferred to an overnight emergency hospital. When I called back I was told my dog could stay overnight at Carlsen's because he needed the IV fluids and that I could call in the morning to find out more. I didn't realize until later that I had not been asked to leave a deposit - unheard of in today's veterinary office practices. The next day my dog was better enough to go home and I picked him up about 4pm. He walked out and wagged his tail when he saw me, more animation than I'd seen in him in a few days! I knew then that he'd received the care he needed. I told Dr Carlsen "You saved his life!" and he humbly said "I didn't do anything..." My dog was put on 3 different drugs for home. My impression of this first experience is that it was the cleanest and brightest animal hospital I have seen. It also appeared that each room was equipped with a computer screen. Everyone was either nice or efficient. I appreciated that my bill was reviewed with me while looking over all the charges on the computer screen. Dr Carlsen stayed within the approximate range that he had estimated. I'm pretty sure that his care saved my dog's life!

From: Clover To DR. CARLSON & EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME! I know needed attention when I used to come ( I was only 12lbs) I barked so I would get it! I love going there. Dr. C -did not like that. One day that stopped, when I was walking on the grass I fell over. My Mom, thought I broke my leg. Rushed me: in on May4th 10. Instead they found it I did not have a lot of time left. It was heart breaking news- I survived longer than Dr. C said. I went last week and new I was loved. My mom loved me so much that she never realized i lost my beauty/my hair. They put me in a pink T-shirt that said "HUG ME". My Mom loves me so much she, although I lost my hair..she saw me as adorable Clover. It was today, when friends worried that I lost so much weight--I love to eat and said I look sick- My mom- loves me so much never saw that I am not the way "Adorable Model" I once was! My Mom realized, that everyone who given me so much care @ Carelson gave me my cute "pink" soft T-shirt to hide my hair loss. That is true love for my mom loved me, and never saw a difference. It was special that @ Carelson they gave it to me for love. A bit conceded--it hides my hair loss--I still get told I am cute. Thank you so much for all you have done for me. You have helped me fight this horrible disease, sadly that one day will take my life. Those words are hard! That T-shirt meant so much! How can we ever thank you! Only by saying you have helped give me time to live longer without pain!-I thank everyone. Love Clover

Dr. Carlsen has been taking care of our Turkish Angora cat for over 11 years. She is now approaching her 20th birthday. I can't imagine taking her anywhere else (and believe me, we tried 2 other vets in Westwood and Santa Monica with bad results before a neighbor recommended Carlsen Animal Clinic).

As with a lot of senior cats, she has kidney disease, and we've been able to keep it manageable for several years thanks to Dr. Carlsen's expert care. What I like about him is he has the latest equipment and technology, but he will also recommend natural remedies such as pumpkin for constipation instead of oil-based products. He has been a real lifesaver for our cat.

I would say that Dr. Carlsen is a highly competent and compassionate vet. His clinic is very clean, professional, and well-organized, and his staff is really friendly too. That makes a big difference in my opinion, and I feel very confident taking my pet there. I always recommend Dr. Carlsen to all my friends and neighbors on the Westside.

I'm not a staff member of Carlsen Animal Hospital. I have taken 3 animals there over the years. I don't find the front office any more rude or rushed than anyplace else I've ever been. Nor do I find they go out of their way. BUT I have had spectacular service from Dr. Carlsen and his associates. He is conservative--he doesn't prescribe immediately or order costly tests right off the bat. He gets that just ordering tests to order them can add up and that trying home remedies often works great.

I have been a client of Dr. Carlsen for 12 years. I had two cats and one passed away recently at age 19. The other is alive and well and is currently near her 21st birthday.

Dr. Carlsen IMO is the kind of Dr. I would like for myself - He combines serious science and holistic preventative care into a practice that resists unnecessary interventions and opts for more natural thoughtful therapies when he can.

Dr. Carlsen is devoted to his patients, specializes in dogs and cats and does many of specialities right in his office. When my 19 year old passed away Dr. Carlsen showed his deep sense of compassion and warmth by being there for my wife and I and sharing our loss.

One other thing the whole staff is clean, very disciplined, kind hearted and they LOVE dogs and cats!!!!

Carlsen's Animal Hospital is a place I have total confidence in. Dr. Carlsen has always been attentive to my German Shepherd Dog and Abyssinian cats. He has shown compassion, caring and complete confidence.
His Staff is wonderful too. They are competent and friendly.

The staff and doctors here are fantastic. Dr. Carlsen is a gem - no matter how busy the office is (and trust me - they are busy!) he makes the time to connect with you and your pet like you were the only clients in the building. Recommend them to everyone.

Dr. Carlsen is a GREAT VET. He can calm my high-strung Abyssinians simply by stroking them. When they've have medical problems, Carlsen has found practical solutions that work for both the cats and me. He is very thorough but once the test results are in, his diagnoses have always been spot on. Over the years, I've lived in several neighborhoods in L.A. and tried vets more conveniently located, but they've never measured up. I always return to Carlsen no matter how far I have to drive with a cat squawking angrily from the back seat.

Dr. Carlsen is a prince of a vet. I have been going to him for over 12 years, and yes sometimes there are long waits but generally that is due to emergencies (I have been one on occasion) being squeezed in as they should be. He has always been kind, reasonable, caring and given the best and most appropriate treatment after discussing with me at length the options and listening to my concerns. I have seen him be very reasonable and conciliatory with people who are really off the wall, so these few negative reviews are nonsensical to me.

I have been a client of Dr C's since 1996. I wouldn't go anywhere else. He is kind, knowledgeable, and thorough. He was the vet for our two Persians cats since they were very young, all the way to the natural end of their lives at age 17. He's also the vet to our two Goldens - one of whom is very sick right now which has ZIP to do with the quality of his care. In fact I am at peace knowing that if he tells me this is her time, it is. The facility is clean, bright and well kept -- and in fact our dogs LOVE their appointments. Anyone who has had any issue is probably blaming him for the death of their pet -- as one facing that right now, I understand the pain. But it has nothing to do with this fabulous person and professional.

We have had a great experience with Dr. Carlsen over the past 8 years! He oversaw the last 7 years of our 18 year old cat with great medical skill, compassion and pragmatism. He has worked wonders with our 11 year old dog (including, finding the right food to treat re-occuring pancretitis and managing a thyroid condition). We recommend him highly.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Carlsen. He is an amazing veterinarian, and regardless of any negative comments he was extremely kind and sensitive when we had to put our 14 year old lab down. May I also add she only lived that long because he cared for her so well! He is totally overworked and you can tell he genuinely wants to help all the animals that need him,

Like one of the other contributors, I have think the world of Dr. Carlsen. The only reason I could think for anyone making their negative remarks, is that their pet died. (I am so sorry for that. ) Dr. Carlsen saved my little Bichon, who had two bladder surgeries which meant take out his bladder, scrape out the hundreds of little stones, and put the bladder back in. On the third bladder infection, Dr. Carlsen said the third surgery would not be advised. What he did offer was a procedure that redirected his urethra so he would pee out of a permanent hole created right behind his penis. That was five years ago. Not one single infection and so far, he is 11 years old and perky as ever. Yes, Dr. Carlsen is expensive. Take a look at how many front desk assistants he has, plus I am not even sure how many are behind the scenes. I would doubt if Dr. Carlsen take home a large salary considering his staff and benefits he pays. Vets do the best they can. The end result is not always positive. I trust him and know that he and he staff will take the best care of my little guy without a whimper. (People do that too!).

I just started seeing Dr. Carlsen and I must say, I'm impressed. He is so gentle and caring with the animals. He really cares about each patient he sees. He was able to see what was going on with my pet right away. Also, I've had a lot of experience with several vets in the past few months and his office is by far the best run office. They always return calls, even if it's after 6pm and that is very valuable. He is also the most reasonably priced and I've spent a fortune with other vets. He's not out to get your money but rather to see that your pet receives the care he deserves.Hat's off to Dr. Carlsen ~ I finally found a vet in this town!

I travel with my 2 cavaliers between TN, UT and CA - we have vets in all three states in case of emergency, but there isn't one that I trust more than Dr. Carlsen.

Having a lot of experience with vets, very few are as thorough and conscientious as he is. I have never had an unpleasant experience with him, but I was forewarned that he may not have the best "bedside" manner. I've found him to be lovely and take an honest interest in my babies.

Dr. Carlsen is an amazing veterinarian. I have been going to him for the past 11 years, and thanks to him, my last cat lived to be 20 years old. His knowledge about geriatric pets is phenomenal, and I can tell that he keeps up on the latest studies. He's busy because he is good. Now I have a new kitten and know that she will be in good hands with Dr. C and expect that her life will be healthy and long as well. All you naysayers are delusional - sounds like you want to be coddled and pampered more than your pets.

My wife and I took our two dogs and one cat to Dr. Carlsen and were never less than satisfied with his knowledge and personality. Over the past fifteen years he has given our pets the best care possible. Dr. Carlsen is not a megalomaniac and not a control freak: You need to accept that he almost certainly knows more than you do about your pet and what ails it. He might be a little reserved or cold, but he is never condescending. He is extremely overworked -- his waiting room overflows with people and pets, and all of his exam rooms are always full -- so he might seem rather business-like but he's never rude or unfriendly. In fact, he can even be quite warm and funny under the right circumstances.

As a poster below noted, all of the negative reviews are vague. So here are some positive specifics. Our eldest dog has had a number of problems over the years, from bone infections to knee surgeries to severe eye injuries. Dr. C treated them all successfully. Recently her hind legs seemed weak and she was unable to stand. We feared a kidney problem but rather than conduct unnecessary exams, Dr. C recognized immediately that it was a bug bite and treated that.

A year and a half ago, our cat became terminally ill. Dr. C treated her with compassion, doing what he could to keep her comfortable in her final months but never encouraged us to subject her to useless treatments that would keep her alive but miserable. When she finally passed, he made a donation in her name to the UC animal hospital.

We recently had to leave the LA area and miss Dr. C and his wisdom. If you can get an appointment in his busy schedule, grab it. You and your pet will benefit immensely from his knowledge and practical experience.

And Brandy S. was a fine vet tech as well!

I've been taking my dogs and cats to Dr. Carlsen for 20+ years. And I would add, my pets have lived longer than normal years due to the quality care and no BS, common sense approach that DR. Carlsen takes. He is also very much up to date on the latest research, treatments, etc. and when he believes that a particular treatment or test will not provide results, he will say so even when the result is less revenue to him which someone else mentioned.
I have referred several friends to Dr. Carlsen over the years and they are still clients also.

Dr. Carlsen has been my cats' vet for 15+ years and has seen them through problems small and large. In every interaction, he has treated me as an intelligent human being with an equal say in what happens to my pets. He never makes you feel like you can't ask questions (and I ask a lot!), and he always takes time to answer them completely and explain his reasonings. He has been consistently kind and compassionate.

For those concerned by the two comments about him being a control freak, I will point out that the posters neglected to share any real information about whatever happened, and I want to reassure you that I haven't seen a single sign of that in 15+ years. Certainly, he makes recommendations (isn't expertise and advice part of what we're paying for?), but it's been along the lines of gentle guidance, after discussing what's right for me and my cats, not "because I'm the vet and I say so."

I will offer two specific examples:
1) One of my cats developed a thyroid problem. Dr. Carlsen recommended the currently standard treatment plan but I couldn't afford it. He didn't pressure me about it - we just discussed options and went with a medication instead. (By the way, a year later, when the medication stopped being effective and my cat got very sick, Dr. Carlsen didn't even hint at any form of blame or "I told you so." In fact, just the opposite - when I voiced feelings of guilt, he was very reassuring.)

2) Later, a decision needed to be made of how far to go to confirm diagnosis of a probable brain tumor. We discussed options, how my frail, 17 yr-old cat would tolerate the major tests and then treatments involved, and what I wanted for her final days. He recommended the less aggressive path, which was obviously the right way to go (and, by the way, *less* profitable for him). But if I had been bone-headed about it and insisted on a full-court-press that probably would have killed her before the tumor did, well yes, I believe (and hope) he would have tried pretty hard to make me think twice about it - for her sake.

Certainly none of us is perfect all the time, and I'm sure it's a challenge to find just the right level of "guidance" to give each animal parent in every situation, but I just couldn't leave the negative (and detail-free) reviews unanswered, since I have always had nothing but positive experiences.

Instead of unsubstantiated opinions, I'll try to give you some specifics and you can make up your own mind. Dr. Carlsen had taken care of our westie for the past 11 years. Westies have tricky allergy problems especially with regard to food as well as the usual doggie problems. Other than being a customer I have no financial or personal involvement with Carlsen Animal Hospital.

Example 1: Food allergies. He's worked with us over the past 11 years to find a diet that our dog can tolerate. From chicken to venison, to fish. She has thrived on fish and potato for the last 8 years. Not so impressive? It took alllergy tests, judgement and experience with Westies.
Example 2: About 18 months ago I noticed that our dog was leaving spots of dead grass in the back yard where she peed. On a routine dental visit, I mentioned this. Dr. Carlsen suggested a bladder ultrasound. We gave it a try, and saw a thickening of the bladder wall. He said that this could mean either bladder cancer or an infection. We decided on a course of antibiotics. It took three tries and lots of discussion, but we nipped a nasty bladder infection in bud, ultrasound normal and no more spots--because he knew what lawn spots meant.
Example 3: 6 months ago she got really sick. Blood exiting both ends of the dog (at the same time). We rushed her to ASEC in the middle of the night, they kept her overnight and then we transfered her to Dr. Carlsen. He worked with what had been started at ASEC (antibiotics+glucose+saline) kept her for a couple of days, got her digestion restarted and she was as good as new. A real miracle. It happened to be a strain of girardia that had singled out canines (probably picked up from drinking water off the ground). Two points here: he recognized the problem immediately, and worked seamlessly with the emergency care provider.
Example 4: When she was much younger, our dog ate a bee. Instant acute pancreatitis. He had to stop her digestive system, then restart it and get her stabilized. Went from a very sick puppy to a happy puppy in 2 days.

Now some opinions:
I have trouble with the "control freak" epithet. Dr. Carlsen runs an animal hospital. Do you really want to have a doctor who has no interest in taking control of a situation? A 20 pound dog that can't keep water down isn't going to last long--I need a vet who will take charge when its important. At the same time Dr. Carlsen knows my preferences. He knows that I am nutso about unnecessary use of antibiotics and ambivalent about heartworm meds. He asks and we discuss, and he explains-- before a decision is made. Do I usually wind up agreeing with his judgement? Yes! He's been treating lots of animals for along time, he is an expert and I am not. Does he treat me with respect and explain what is on his mind? Yes!

Nuff said. He has been a great doctor for my westie.

We have been going to Dr. Carlsen for 6 years. We moved from Los Angeles to Orange County and we are driving our 3 pets into L.A., because we trust Dr.Carlsen implicitly. He is an advocate for the PETS. as his profession dictates he should be.
He gave us a dog food recipe this week that we tried today and our finicky little dogs LOVED it. I cannot recommend him highly enoough.

I have been seeing Dr. Carlsen for over 10 years. I am shocked and appalled at the review that said he had a "god complex" I have never in all the years I have been seeing him witnessed such a thing.

I have a Cocker Spaniel with health issues, but he has lived to be 17 years old due to the loving care of Dr. Carlsen.
I like that Dr. Carlsen does not charge for re-checks (like everyone else does) and the fact that he is not part of a huge conglomerate (such as a VCA) is helpful. He has the discretion to adjust prices if need be. The staff is wonderful too!

One thing I can say about him is that he does not have a lot of patience for people who do not "get it" e.g. people who do not spay and neuter their pets or follow treatment instructions in the best interest of their pet. They may receive a little bit of a "lecture" but not the emergence of a "dark mood."

As I have been increasingly aware of my pets winter years he has been kind and compassionate and even gave me a hug and reassured me we he would do everything in his power to help my dog live a dignified life unitl we reach the end. I would reccomend him to anyone.

Fine diagnostician; fine doctor, fine man. Been taking dogs to him for more than 20 years. If he was an internist, I'd go to him. You can't do better.

I have gone to Dr. Carlsen for years and am a professional in the animal care field. He takes his time, manages to keep his compassion despite a very full workload, has a great office staff, and is extremely well respected by his peers. If my animals were in trouble, he's one of the two vets I would call first. And I know a LOT of vets.

My two cats have been treated by Dr. Carlsen for ten years now. He has seen us through asthma, bowel, gland and kidney issues. I am happy to report that I currently have 2 very healthy 14 year old cats and I attribute that to Dr. Carlsen. He is very kind, he takes the time to explain the disease process as well as treatment options. His instincts are astounding, he can almost look at your pet and get an accurate diagnosis. I feel blessed that I found Dr. Carlsen and I trust him with my most precious friends, my pets.

I finally went to Carlsen Animal Hospital at the urging of a friend of a friend. Two other associates of mine, also told me that they bring their animals to Carlsen Animal Hospital saying, "Dr. Carlsen is great!" And Dr. Carlsen is indeed great! He really cares about the animals and their people. He doesn't need to look up in the charts what is going on with the particular animal....While finishing up with one client he hands the paperwork to the front desk staff and sees a patient entering the hospital, he might ask "How is the new medication working on so-and-so's ear infection?" Or "is Joey, the dog, acting better around Mimi, your cat?" Dr. Carlsen doesn't really think of his patients in terms of dollar signs unlike so many other vets who own their own practice. When I brought in my miniature pinscher, he was very informative, honest and caring. He was also particularly sensitive to the fact that I may not be able to afford the cost of a particular surgery and educated me as to all my options. Not only was Dr. Carlsen looking out for the best interest of his patient (my min pin) but he was also thinking in terms of what my limitations might be and helping me make an informed choice.

I moved and made the mistake of taking my dog to another vet.. That vet told me that my dog had cancer and would soon die. Prior to moving, I had always used Dr. Carlsen. I decided to bring my dog to him. My dog did not have cancer and I enjoyed her for many years until she finally did pass away. I echo everyone who says that Dr. Carlsen is the best diagnostician in town, and one heck of a terrific human being as well. I now gladly make the drive to see him. Even if he is busy and you see the assistant vet, you can rest assured that Dr. Carslen will be consulted as well.

I have been with Carlsen Animal Hospital for 2 years now and I'm always very happy with the care and service I receive. There are many vets I could choose that are much closer to my house, but this one is worth the drive. Highly recommended!

Dr. Bill Carlsen is the best diagnostician I have ever met. I have been impressed with his vast medical knowledge, his superb practice wisdom, and his keen instinct about animals and their human custodians. He works with you as he discusses the possibilities, and your options. Although he is very busy, he is kind about giving you time to think or feel it through. Anyone who has a sick pet, especially one with mysterious symptoms, knows how distressing this can be. I am writing this out of compassion, because I have been there, and he helped us. All of my brothers and sisters go to him for their pets, and some of us drive great distances, just to stay with him. He also has a great sense of humor, no extra charge! I logged back it because I saw two bad reviews of this excellent vet. The lack of specific info and the comment from the woman whose husband is supposed to be a psychiatrist are suspicious themselves. You have my name on this one, because it is the truth and I have no financial interest in his business. Animals have very few advocates who can both read them and apply scientific problem solving to their symptoms. If you have a sick pet and you want an accurate diagnosis, and a thoughtful presentation of your options, he is your person. CF

This is the most intelligent, thorough, and sympathetic vet I have ever went to. He has always helped me to decide the best course to take with my animals taking into account cost, recovery, and benefit or detriment to pet. He truly cares about EVERY animal that comes through his doors. And he cares about the human pet guardians, too, as he realizes your situation. And that's rare.

PROS: Everything written above
CONS: Sometimes you have to get the assistant vet because he's so busy
