I stopped in to kill some time and ordered the lentil soup. I got a small and the portion was HUGE and the soup was fantastic. The employees were kind and helpful (I'm new in town) and the coconut gelato is really good- there are toasted coconut bits in it!

I will be back for sure, I'm dying to check out other flavors of gelato!

Pros: Amazing lentil soup and coconut ice cream!

The Rigatoni with Tomato Basil is the best thing in the world. Fresh pasta, perfect sauce - their meatballs and chicken cutlet are a perfect companion.
And all their desserts are outstanding.

Being from Italy, my expectation towards quality Gelato are high. It was impossible for me to find truly good gelato in LA until a friend recommended "Al Gelato".
The owner who obviously takes great pride in his work, delivers consistently wonderful flavors and textures.
This is how Gelato is supposed to taste!

This place has simply the best Italian food that I've ever had. The quality is exceptional and you feel like you're having home made dishes and desserts. The portions are so big that you can feed a couple of people easily! I highly recommend this place to anyone who has a passion for Italian food.
And don't forget to try the one of a kind gelatos!

I must say that their desserts( especially the tiramisu) is this side of heaven but their food is overpriced and oversauced. Not impressed with the food menu but the dessert alone is worth making a trip.

we live close by and get gelato here all the time... sooooo yummy. so we decided to sit in for dinner one night and ordered up some of the best sounding and worst tasting pizza ive ever had. the crust tasted like smoke. the sauce was just... sour. i couldnt finish. the moral of the story is, have dinner somewhere else and come here for desert.

As a patron of Al Gelato for 10 years now, most recently I was dissapointed with a drop in integrity. When requesting more bread, I was informed there will be an extra charge. Sorry, that is nonsense. A staple of italian dining is the bread to sop sauce. I have never been in an italian restaurant that charged me for bread. Very sad about that Al. Snap out of it. If I am going to spend 40 some-odd dollars for dinner with a guest, do not charge for the bread. Shame on you to take advantage in these tight times.

I found this place because a friend swore by it.
The food is reasonable, delicious, and the staff are great.
Make sure you bring cash - only form of payment accepted.
And know up front it's not a flashy restaurant - very casual - but the food is seriously the best Italian I've had outside of Italy.

I see alot of reviews all talking up the fantastic gelato served there. While I feel the enthusiasm is well warranted, the reviewers have neglected something special. The SAUCE! Their pasta marinara is some of the best I've had. Its truely addicting and recommend everyone to go try it.

Generous portions, quaint decor, tasty pastas, salads and deserts and all served with friendly smiles. A welcome if you want to get away from the crowded and hectic pace of upper Robertson Blvd. Informal attire and a great family place to dine.

Pros: Generous portions, tasty food, casual dress, friendly staff. Warm, quaint decor.

Cons: Limited parking during weekdays and payment by cash only.

I paid aloto for the gelato. It was good. I had the 2 selections.

But I do have a grevience.....asked if I wanted it to take out or sit outdoors at the table....I said
well...I'll sit, thank you. Then since you are staying...we offer you a SAMPLE 3rd selection, but they
did not say it would cost me more.

I don't like paying for something that I see as a posted price and get a check for another price. I like to know up front what I am paying for ....and have the ability to change my mind if I don't agree. If there is
a posted price....there should be a price for take out and a price for eating in.

Al Gelato has played a very important part in my life, but we'll save that for another day. What we will talk about today is the fact that Al Gelato not only serves the best, freshest, creamiest gelato in the United States , it also serves some of the best authentic Italian food on earth.

Claire, the original owner/chef from the original Al Gelato in Chicago's burbs, oversees the kitchen, bakes the best homemade thick bread, pickles their own olives/gardenia, makes their own sausage and meatballs, should I go on?

No, it's not fancy..that's the point. It's simply delicious. I've run into everyone from Rickie Lee Jones to Tom Hanks to Bruce Willis here. Yes, it's that great. Do yourself a favor...GO!

I just got back from there with a friend of mine. He swore by the place. As I was under some time restraints, I wasn't all that excited (had to be in Burbank by 4:00). That all changed after I tasted the food. We split the rigatoni in the sweet tomato basil sauce and the rigatoni and pesto. This was the first really good Italian food I've had out here in Los Angeles and I've been here 5 years. The bread that came with the pasta was fresh and deliciously paired with a hot pepper and olive garnish. We also split a huge meatball that was perfect. Unfortunately, no time or room for dessert but I'll definitely return (maybe tomorrow). Gotta try the apple pie. The parking, pet, and credit card issues that others have with the place are immaterial in light of how good the food and service is.
Go! GO!! GO!!!

The food is fairly good and they have one of the sweetest sauces I have ever had. Do not eat the red velvet cake, as it is not the best. There are only two real issues I have with this establishment and they are: 1) The fact the staff does not really know health code but will cite it as the reason you cannot sit on the curb with your dog and eat. 2) They are so cheap in this day and age that they will not pay transaction fees for credit cards, but will gladly work a deal with an ATM company to split the service charge on the machine inside.

The issue with the pets is a little strange as the seats are not even on an enclosed patio but instead sit literally on the edge of the street. The wait staff stated they could not serve nor allow us to sit outside on the curb with our dog and enjoy our desert. Maybe they should look up the health codes as almost every other restaurant and deli in the City of LA does not seem to fall under this mysterious health code, which they do. I am amazed in a city which is so accepting of pets and prides itself on some tremendous outdoor activities, there would be an owner of any establishment which would deny service to a group with a pet.

Pros: sauce

Cons: staff and knowledge of staff

Such great gelato!! Really friendly cool people work there. Open late!
The best is chocolate chip, sounds maybe a bit boring, but not here. Sweet vanilla gelato with lots and lots of little chips of chocolate. Also, all the chocolate based ones are amazing. Everything is divine, but I never really get the sorbets. Great coffee too. And bread. The tomato sauce is too sweet.
Added bonus, once saw Jessica Alba and Cash Warren there.

The garlic bread is a loaf of super pungent garlic that can feed a family of 5. If you desire to stuff you face and belly, go for it because the portions are very large, however the pastas and sandwiches are not good and not Italian. No need to elaborate.

"Dessert Only". I would only come here for dessert, seriously. The Gelato is good, nothing to die for, but good. Coconut favor is good, Tiramisu flavor is so so.

Service is not that great, it is of the "with a little bit of attitude" variety.

By far, Al Gelato has the best red sauce and meatballs in LA. The red sauce is on the sweet side and the meatball is herby. I always order the ravioli which has yet to fail me. Service is good, if you understand the Chicago way. The gelato and ice are tasty and rich. It has more of a diner feel and is not fancy, but it is good homestyle food. I love their olive and pepper assortment that is offered with the bread. A great find.

The food was OK, Gelato was great, and Service was horrible. The waitress seemed not to want to be there. She acted like she is too good for the job and we were inconveniencing her too much. No ice tea refills, even though they were not busy. The food was OK, large portions of pasta (I do not like pasta), and the meat was just OK, we had our gelato to go and once we were far away from the evil waitress, the gelato was just marvelous.

Had the chocolate-hazelnut gelato, tried the coconut and mint chip that my friends had. The coconut and mint chip both had chemical overtones (the coconut lacked balance - too much coconut extract or artificial coconut flavoring, not enough milkiness - the mint chip had a mediciney flavor). The gelato wasn't horrible overall - if you're in the neighborhood anyway and want some dessert, I wouldn't avoid the place - but certainly not worth going out of your way for.

No kidding-the spaghetti accompanied with tomoato and huge meatballs are meaty, HUGE and certainly delicious. The service is very good-in fact, there are probably too many behind the counter but at least you get what you need.
Hot, baked bread with thick crunchy crust is offered with the main entrees - and not to mention the delicious olive tray.
You can't beat this dinner at a place located on Robertson in a cool part of BH!

It's just food to die for! The chicken noodle soup has whole pieces of chicken that literally fall off the bone because it's so tender. The salad comes with this deliscious dressing of balsamic vinegrette. The pastas...my-oh-my...fantastic. I usually order the meat ravioli which comes in the best marinara sauce! The meatball is by far the best because it's so moist and tender! Then...the deserts...you can get the ice cream that's also homemade or any one of their desert creations...like the tiramisu! Everyone I've ever taken to this place cannot stop raving about it! I MUST HAVE!!!

Went here a few days ago, and the gelato is quite decent. There are better places to get gelato only one block from my apt., so it is definitely not worth a trip for me. The best gelato I have had in all of LA has been Crema Dolci in Redondo Baech and Paradise Gelato Creamery in Manhattan Beach. Those places have a better selection, and are very yummy, although nothing in LA is TRULY authentic. This place is not bad, and if you are already parked and hangin out on Roberston, i would definitly say go. Roberston is a cool street, and the ambiance alone makes this place worth it. If the line is super long, or you have to hassle JUST for the ice cream, I wouldnt go. Again, dont get me wrong, the ice cream is good, but dont expect TOO much!

I'm an ice cream and gelato lover. My wife and I have been to Italy twice and our trip included finding all the recommended gelatos. We used Al Gelato as a mark against all the other gelatos sampled, and Al Gelato is still #1 in our book, especially in Los Angeles. Flavors are intense, texture creamy, and portions generous (order 2 scoops and you get a 3rd added if you don't want whipped cream). Best are cappucino and coconut, just amazing. Also chocolate, and hazelnut, strawberry and other fruits very good. Try their food and you will be just as happy. Their NY style pizza I rate one of the best in the city, a superb Pesto sauce (we had over rigatoni), and amazing garlic bread (and regular bread) made on the premises. It's a family run place, the owner Joe is friendly and caring, and the wait staff do everything they can to make you happy. It's a small neighborhood place which gets crowded at dinnertime so go early. On the non-gelato desert side, they offer many large portions of homemade cakes and pies (all food and gelato is made on the premises and from home recipies). I found the pie crust curiously hard and stiff (kind of like a tasteless Chicago pizza shell), but the fillings were great. They also serve cheesecakes, cookies and lots more. Trouble is, I'm so full from food and gelato that to try another desert is overkill. If you love gelato, and have never been to Al Gelato, do yourself a favor. It remains one of my favorite places in the city, and I've lived here for years and traveled far and wide in my search for good gelato, and this is the real deal.

The Gelato is good, is tasty and fresh but you can get this in so many places, since they dont make their own. The food is heavy, cafeteria quality, and mediocre both in taste and consistency. Service used to be really good but now is pretty spotty at best. Place looks kind of old and rundown for a restaurant. You can get better Italian food.

The selection is very small (about 12 flavors of gelato) and the gelato doesn't taste authentic. It doesn't seem fresh. If you go thinking you're going to get gelato like in Italy, you'll be disappointed. What bothered me most were the cones, which are of the supermarket-styrofoam variety. A great gelato place opened in Laguna Beach and it is 10x better than this place. GO...they have tons of flavors, all delicious, and their cones are handmade in the store.

I love to eat out and bring my dog whenever possible. Since there are tables outside I thought it would be a nice place to have some ice cream. I came here with my boyfriend one day. All the tables were occupied so I waited outside while my boyfriend went to check out the menu. He asked the guy behind the counter for a menu so we could take something to go. He didn't even have a chance to look at the menu since the guy practically told him not to bother and leave since "dogs are not permitted on the patio area"
As for the sign in the front saying something like they love dogs....um, yeah. It shows.

This place has the best gelato I've had in Los Angeles. If you know the difference between ice cream and gelato, and like me you've been to little gelato shops in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, you will appreciate this little cafe.
As far as price is concerned, as with all things gourmet (and better then average) you pay a little more. So if you'd like to save money go to 31 Flavors, if you want quality, this is the place in Los Angeles.
Recently I was pleasantly surprised when I had all meat pizza combo. Probably the best in LA, with quality dough, tons of cheese, plenty of meat, and good sauce.

We just tried their Italian Food, and this place knocked us out! Homemade bread, lasagna and meatballs, (which were gigantic), brought me back to the East coast. My friends ordered the spinach raviolli and the gnocchi pesto, which also rocked. We were so stuffed we had to share dessert. The cannoli, gelato with real whipped cream and the tiramisu were also great. The portions are huge, so definitely go hungry. The place is unpretentious and the staff was very friendly. I can't wait to go back.

Italina food in La just tastes funny, specially the Pizza. Someone told me it is the water, in any case, this place has food that is even sub par for LA, Icecream is good thouugh. My recomendation, eat dinner somewhere else and come for ice cream here.

Pros: Good Ice Cream, Cheap Food, Large portions

Cons: Bad food, Bad Pizza

.

Do I dare say that the pasta sauce is the single best I have ever had. Insane actually.

Cons: Decor, Only accept cash, Only street parking

I have been to Italy and loved the gelato there! My husband and were so excited to find Al Gelato here in LA! We believe Al Gelato offers the most authentic tasting gelato you can get here in Los Angeles. Therefore, I have to disagree with those who say it's not that great. My husband and I have been coming here for years. The gelato and the other desserts are outstanding. The owner is from Chicago and very down-to-earth (rude? I hardly believe it). I have heard the pizza and Italian food are great as well, although we have yet to try it. My only complaint would be that the gelato is a bit pricey, but it's worth it when you really need a gelato fix!

I just came back form Italy and I thought this place would at least be half as good as some of the restaurants i went to in Italy. Well it is not. For one thing, if it is an icecream place, who wants to go in and be blown away by the smelll of garlic and cheese? Secondly, the gelato is NOT all that! Gotta try gelato in Italy to know what i mean! This place is average at the best and bellow average if you are talking about Italian food and Gelato authenticity.

I live close by and have eaten here a few times. The food is below average. Portions are big, but quality is at best marginal, Pasta is over cooked, Olive Garden style. For a better price you can find a dozen Italian places with better food. Ice cream is good, get it and eat at home so you dont have to deal with the nasty waitresses.

A friend introduced this tiny little cafe to me. The gelato's alright because they let you choose between fresh whipped cream on top or a sample scoop of another flavor. But it depends if you like gelato's rich texture over plain old ice cream. The real attraction is the food. I love love love the open face meatball sandwich. Imagine a slice of fresh bread being smothered by a giant meatball swimming in red sauce. mMmm~ **Ask for their canned/pickled peppers if you want to add a little zing to ur food. Street parking is limited but you can either find meters in front on Robertson or park in a side street and stroll on over. The only problem here is that it gets really cramped sometimes during dinner hours on weekends...they take CASH ONLY....and they close on mondays :(

I like ice cream so I don't mind dropping by for some at Al Gelato every now and then. But to be honest, the ice cream is not that noteworthy. For ice cream fans, I think the draw is that it is unique (i.e., they probably make their own ice cream as opposed to buying it from a large company). But their prices are just too high. For example, last night my wife bought one scoop and I bought two. The bill? $10, not including tip (yes, you're expected to tip if you sit down inside at one of the formica tables with metal chairs). Bottom line: it's too much to spend for a couple of scoops of ice cream. I could buy a couple of pints of Haagan Daz for the same amount, which is probably 10 times as much ice cream and just as good (if not better).

I live in Los Feliz and drive all the way over just for their pizza and gelato. The sauce is amazing and the pizza crust is terrific, crisp on the outside and chewy. The side salad with the pizza is enough for 2 as is almost all items on the menu. The tiramasu is excellent. I don't think I can express it enough this place is terrific and they don't try to rip you off in the $$$ area.

I ordered a full order of spinach ravioli and meat ravioli, while my friend had a full order of the gnocchi. THE FULL ORDERS ARE BIG ENOUGH FOR 2 PEOPLE- BELIEVE ME. The homemade red sauce that the ravioli and gnocchi swam in was phenomenal. A little buttery, a little sweet, and just perfect. The gnocci was obviously fresh and therefore impeccable- the best I've ever had. Perfect size, perfect texture.

Don't forget to get more bread for when your dinner comes (believe me, you'll need more because you'll finish the first basket they bring). It is PERFECT for dipping in your extra sauce- a match made in heaven.

Be sure to try some of their famous gelato- any flavor will be a winner. Be careful though- IT'S RICH!

Service was outstanding as well- nice, courteous, and quick.

Service is like whatever. Recommend the rigatoni w/ marinara, the chicken soup w/huge pieces of chicken meat, and of course the gelato. I like chocolate hazelnut. Don't get any huge-sized desserts - not good. They only take cash and closed on mondays.

I've been to Italy many, many times and I do not see why Al Gelato is so popular. I went in to for a gelato only to be knocked over by the smell of parmesan cheese entering this tiny store. They serve spaghetti too! Somehow the gelato being smothered with the smell of cheese was just too gross.

you have to get the rigatoni (i don't like red sauce, but i love theirs!) with one giant meatball. it's the closest i've gotten to anything like what my grandpa used to make. gelatto is fantastic.
plenty of street parking at night. negative: extra charge for gelato if you eat it at a table.

While Al Gelato has been one of my favorite desert places for years, I must say that everytime I visit I pray the owner is not scooping gelato that day. Yes, they do gelato the best, but you better know exactly what you want when you get up to the counter to order, or else! If you want to top your flavor off with another flavor -- ask for a taste and don't call it a 'dollop' or you will head your head bitten off by the cranky owner.

Gelato is the *real* reason you should go to Al Gelato. If you feel the need to have a bit of dinner with your dessert, though, they offer a really tasty house salad. Get the small size. It's enormous! It comes with very nice olives, peppers, and bread. BUT, whatever you do, save room for dessert. My personal favorite gelato is the orange flavor. Every flavor I've tried has been good, though. As for the other desserts, I always want to try them--especially the ENORMOUS apple pie thing--but I can never bring myself to forego the orange gelato. Oh well, one day...As for ambience, this place is very casual and usually slightly crowded. I like it. I think the service is fine, too, but I don't have terrifically high expectations for a place like this.

There's a full menu of salads, pasta, pizza and sandwiches. The portions are huge and can easily be shared by three people. Get a big bowl of rigatoni in the homemade marinara (laced with fennel seed) and top it with a side of meatballssome of the best in town. The handmade gelato is densely creamy and soft. There's no chocolate-covered waffle cones or sprinkles. This gelato doesn't need dressing up. The chocolate hazelnut is wonderfully authentic. The vanilla with lemon is amazing. The cappuccino is so rich with coffee buzz it's almost black. Every scoop of the pear ice sings with perfect, lightly sweet pear flavor. The coffee is fabulous--try a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of gelato. Yum.

A friend of mine and I are obsessed with the tuna sandwich at Al Gelato. Forget the Gelato and start out with a homemade bread and tuna salad sandwich that's huge. If you still have room have the meat ball before you cool off with some fabulous gelato. Comfort food that will bring you back again and again.
