The house balsamic vinaigrette was quite delicious. Our waitress was wonderful. The potato skins were very good and they had just the right amount of toppings.

There is a reason that I'm a regular here. It starts with the location- it's really the anchor of South Street (one of the funkier parts of Philly). George (the tall grey haired man perched on the ice box behind the bar) is not only the best bartender in Philly, he's in the running for best in the world. JImmy Duffy's Tuesday night quizzo is always entertaining. The regulars provide the pub with true Philly character. It is not unusual to run into a local sports figure or two on any given night (sometimes they may even be dancing the bar top!) The food is excellent and there's a daily happy hour buffet from 5 to 7. See ya there. Be good or be gone.

I came in here thinking 2-3 stars maximum and expecting it to be the same typical off Irish pub that I've grown to hate (and in a lot of ways it was). But it was Big Dan's birthday bash so l decided to come anyway. And in the end it made for a much better time than expected. Don't get this review wrong, on a normal night, who knows how it could have turned out. But maybe it was the Black & Blue's talking, or maybe it was the Snake Bites. Or maybe it was the parting shot of tequila, and the fact that Big Dan rolled in with a beautiful posse of karaoke singing ladies (actually that one is an incentive anywhere :D). Or maybe it was just the fact that the karaoke night was pretty freaking awesome, and that plenty of people in the crowd gave props for a job well sung. But whatever the reason Downey's delivered one abnormally fun occasion.

I went to Downey's last night after not having been for many years. I was very pleasantly surprised that my old stomping grounds still have the same look and feel I remembered. The food was top notch, the service was excellent and the karaoke was a lot of fun. We went for dinner and ended up spending the entire evening there until well after midnight. Usually way past my bedtime on a work night but well worth being tired today. A great evening out. Highly recommended.

Met some friends for drinks last weekend and was surprised at the negative reviews on here. Decent beer prices and surprisingly good food. The service was great, our waitress was a sweetheart and made sure none of us had an empty glass. All in all we had a good time and would definitely go back.

I've been here many times. The food is really good- huge portions! So for the price, you get leftovers or can split the meal. Stick to appetizers if you're not that hungry. Even the sandwiches are huge. They have beer specials during games. The staff is always super friendly and helpful. If you have kids, I'd go during the day or early evening. They have tables next to open windows for an outdoor feel and people watching.

I went in to Downey's last week to try out the all you can eat crab leg special. It was great! I had so much fresh crab legs...I was in heaven! I ate more than the $18.95 it cost me. The atmosphere was fun and the staff was really friendly, I'll definitely be back!

Great deals during Happy Hours! Meat, veggie pasta etc. plus cheap beer. Being at the end of South, there's few tourists considering the location.

I hosted a bridal shower for my cousin's upcoming wedding at Downey's. The party was a complete DISASTER!!!!! Frist off, it was 92degrees outside, and they did not have the airconditioner on!! And only turned it on after we asked for the 3rd time! Second off, the party, which was a brunch, started at 12:30, and the food wasn't put out until 1:30! Third, we were promised a carving station and a omlette station, wich was not set up. Instead, the "carving station" was downstairs and the meat was cut down there and then put on the buffet. The "omlette station" was actually 1 waitress, for 50 people, taking omlette orders and then bring the orders to the kitchen and then bringing them out. The entire omlette process took about 1 1/2 hours. The bride and the mother of the bride didn't even get their omlettes because of all of the confusion.
Aside from the "stations" disaster, the buffet emptied pretty quickly because at this point, everyone was starving. And, the buffet was NEVER completely refilled!!! We has to ask at least a dozen times, and even then, only two items were refilled and one was with semi- raw bacon!
After repeated requests to speak with the owner, he finally showed toward the end of the party, and couldn't understand why we were upset. He said the food was great, and that the buffet was filled several times!!
The party was scheduled until 4:30pm, and by 3:15, everyone started to leave because they couldn't handle the heat, and they were hungry. People left our party to go eat somewhere else!! What an embarrassment!!
After everyone left, we of course got into an argument with the owner over price, where he than started screaming at us!!! Like I said, it was a disaster!!!!

It want a nice party, without every problem under the sun, than GO SOME WHERE ELSE!! Downey's is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!

This place is beyond awful and I can't believe it is even still open We were greeted by a sour faced hostess who asked us to wait at the bar and never returned. They might consider getting a cat since there are a few unwelcome whiskered guests and I am sure 1 of these guys made it into the soup. After 20 minutes and being grossed out, we gave up and went to the diner up the street.

This restaurant/tavern has been near the waterfront for as long as I can remember. A little expensive, they think a lot of themselves. Market products with their name on them. The rum cake is fantastic.

I was at Downey's on 8/9/2008 for an anniversary dinner with my boyfriend. We arrived and we sat up top which was nice. But the service was horrible. It took the waitress 20 minutes to deliver our drinks. Then we had to ask another waitress to find our waitress so we could order our food. We ordered and appetizer and our entrees. An hour went by and needless to say no appetizer or no dinners arrived. There was another waitress walking back and forth by our table, no one came by to say there was a delay on our food. After waiting an hour for our food, which never arrived we LEFT. We complained to management and they did absolutely nothing. We ended up going to another restuarant on South St, but whatever you do don't go to Downey's. You will be disappointed!!

I stopped there on a recent Wednesday evening...I sat at the bar to eat & drink. The bar was only half full, but it took the bartender, a middle aged man, about 10 minutes to approach me for my first drink. He then did not return to me for the rest of the HOUR that I sat there, soon needing another drink. He was too busy socializing with patrons on the other side of the bar. While I was waiting, I saw two different employees go to the free happy hour buffet that was set up and took & ate food using their hands and did not use the tongs that were sitting by the buffet. During this time, I flagged down a waitress and ordered the lobster. The waitress was very nice and the food was good...the large tasty lobster came with bread, veggies and a baked potato. I could have used another beer to wash it all down, but it was not going to happen with the bartender on duty unless I got up or yelled for him. I finished my food, paid, and went to another bar for the drink I needed. I like this bar and its location and the food is very good so I'll likely go back, but they need to improve many aspects of their service.

Although I have not been to Downy's in a few years since moving to West Virginia, this is by far one of my favorite places. I always have a great time. The food is always great and I love the Irish Soda Bread. The Raw Bar is A must.
Usually always full, the seating by the exterior windows is great especially in the summer when the windows are open and passers by might stop and chat. Pretty cool.
The Pasta Primaverra is always an excellent choice as well as the Lobster Bisque.
The bar is reminicent of an old time tavern andthe drinks are outstanding and the beer (both Draft & Bottled) is always well chilled.
I can't wait for my next trip to Philly.

We decided to go to this (over-hyped) irish bar for dinner on the day of the St. Patricks Day Parade. Why was the dining area almost empty when we arrived? I quickly understood why as our experience progressed into a dining nightmare. NO greeting from our server just an immediate "what do you want to drink?" Half of us received our beers in pint glasses, the other half in plastic cups (not a deal breaker, but a bit odd). We asked for bread and he brought out a basket of Dough. LITERAL dough. The bread was far from being baked thoroughly. My daughter (who is four) was delighted to have a ball of play dough to keep her entertained. Though we would have loved bread...

We ordered our food and my husband ordered the blackened tuna salad (a safe bet). I Ordered the soup 'sampler'. The Tuna on the salad was rare (how we like it) but extremely gross. Brown and fishy. No dressing on the field greens. I told him not to eat it. He took a few bites and decided that was enough.

My soup was cold. I kindly asked the server to nuke my soups and I did not see my meal until 20 minutes later and barley warm after everyone else had finished their meals. The server claimed to "almost have forgotten my soup." By that point I had totally lost my appetite from tasting the (cold) shepherd's pie, the nasty salad and just the looks of the corned beef and cabbage made my stomach turn. Although my 4 year old did like her chicken fingers and french fries (score!).

There was NO apology for anything. I served tables for 10 years of my life and always removed problem items or discounted patrons who had a bad experience. This service was inexcusably ignorant and obnoxious.

Note to manager: If you want people to keep coming back. Start paying attention to your food and staff!! Both need much improvement. This is not a way to do business. We wasted $156 today. We'll take ourselves to Fado next time... Good luck to you.

over priced, lousy food, Irish...not there...

alright, so i went with my girlfriend's sorority for our bi-yearly date party to Downey's. we arrived, thought it was nice besides the the humongous bill that i had for a Yuengling draft, cranberry and vodka, and a whiskey sour (30 bucks). there was good music for the dance floor and a guy that wore all black and had a police badge on his belt (instincts would say he was a cop). eventually after spending some time there, the cop started to flirt with one of my girlfriend's sorority sister (whom was there with her boyfriend). She said to him that she made him feel uncomfortable and relayed this to her boyfriend, who obviously wasn't happy about the situation. the boyfriend got kicked out of the restaurant for a reason that i am unaware of (probably rationally defending his girl friend), leaving him on the side of south street in the blistering cold (late November). we stood outside with him, contacting the local police agency asking if anyone from there was on duty at downey's, but they said that no one was working there that night. we found out later that it was the manager (or owner) that was impersonating a cop, but because it was done on private property, he had a right to do it. the boyfriend never got let back into the restaurant and i believe that no repercussions were taken against the owner/manager.

I feel i don't even need a closing statement about this restaurant. gents, how would you feel if this happened to your girlfriend?

I have never been to a restaurant like this one in my life. This used to be a good place to go, and I used to come here frequently. But then they started bringing out the lobsters without seafood forks, saying they "ran out", they upped the price of the lobsters, and the service got so terrible that one waiter went so far as insulting a family member of mine directly. This used to be an ok restaurant that was only slightly overpriced if you ordered off of the alcohol list or menu-now it's just an overpriced dump that has bad, slow service and no silverware. I've never been to a restaurant (besides this one) where they "ran out" of silverware, and hopefully I will never go to another one. One thing I can tell you-I'm never coming back here.

Pros: The lobsters are good

We are new in the area, so we signed up for a service called resturant.. They sell vouchers for reduced meals at various resturants. The reason we used their service is we can sample various resturants and see which ones we would return to at a later date. Now about Downey's it started bad and got worse-the waiter was clueless, had no idea about the voucher, had no idea about the menu, just had no idea. The best part about the whole experience was we LEFT before ordering anything. Now I know why at 7pm on Oct.31st there were less than 20 patrons in this reasturant.

went there for lunch today. truly terrible value for money- a small bowl of french onion soup that was truly lousy by anyone's standards was $8. need i say more? for a bowl of this soup & simple sandwich & non alcoholic drink for my friend and i, it was $50- and my very hungry friend left a lot of her food because it was pretty yucky. (and i'm not a picky person- i actually felt inspired to start doing reviews for citysearch because i don't want anyone else to waste such money on lunch at this place).

This place is horrible! Do not go there! I ate their with my family and it took 1 hour and 20 minutes to get our food. It took the waiter 20 minutes to even take our order and there were only three tables he was serving. Two other tables in the place waited as long as we did. When he finally served us, he didn't bring my husband's meal and it took another 10 minutes to get it on the table. When we finally got our check, not only did they not take anything off our bill to compensate, but they actually added something to the bill that we didn't order. By the end of the night there were at least three tables and a guy at the bar who were complaining loudly about th extremely poor service. Our table and the table next to us asked for the manager to call the owner to authorize a discount and the owner said no to our request. This place is sleezy and I will never eat their again, even though I live just a couple blocks away. I am ashamed they are even in our neighborhood.

Pros: nothing

Cons: everything

I have been here a few times. The last time I ate there, I took a friend visiting from another country to meet up with some friends from the area. It was a great time and a good environment. It was the perfect place to relax after touring the city. The menu has many selections (not too many traditional Irish, but many traditional Philly meals) for everyone. They did make a mistake with the reservation, but they quickly fixed the problem and we were seated immediately. Great place to eat in the Spring, Summer, and early Fall.

Pros: Good menu. Good Specials

Cons: There are few Irish dishes on the menu

.

The food is overpriced, cold and no taste... The owner canceled a show, the night the band, The Peace Creeps) was setting up for. Won't be back again... Came up from DE.

Pros: shepards pie a+, great service, the food, awesome

Cons: parking, need more parking, more light at the bar

I'd never been here before, but a friend and I decided to try it last week. The Guinness was terrible (def. not the perfect pint), the bar staff was neither friendly nor punctual, and the atmosphere is like a made-for Disney Irish pub, with the senior citizens included. Definitely a tourist trap. Don't waste your time...go to a real Irish pub.
