If Amoeba is the future of chain record stores (as opposed to Tower) -- I am a happy man. Never have I seen a better selection of used CDs than here. Albums that are released on the previous Tuesday, can usual be found in great shape for a reasonable, used price under $10. I can't remember the last time I walked into a CD store, bought 7 CDs and paid under $50. Plus, because they are used -- some I didn't even have to spend the extra five minutes of frustration removing that so unneeded, shrink wrap.

Pros: great selection, fair prices

Cons: parking can be tough

Amoeba Music is a new comer to the Los Angeles area even though they were big up in the bay area in Northern California. The place is huge, two-stories and they have an incredible selection of music from every genre. CD's, DVD's, videos, cassettes, posters and other electronic and non-electronic item that relates to music, film and video. The customer service is not that bad for a large store but there is room for improvement. Parking at times is not that good even though they have alittle parking lot underneath the store. You don't have to wait very long unless it is really packed and it does get packed at times. The place is huge. Go for it and watch yourself go crazy.

Pros: Very Good Selection, Inexpensive, Knowledge of Product

Cons: Parking, Customer Service

I dig the place, don't get me wrong, but I can't afford eight bucks apiece for hip-hop singles that came out nearly ten years ago. I like to keep my dj sets fresh and unpredictable, so Amoeba has some great finds for the times when I want to drop the perfect old skool jam for the dancefloor. I just find it hard to spend half a bill for five new tunes, especially when most of them aren't so new.

Pros: Solid vinyl selection, Great cd selection, Decent neighborhood

Cons: High prices, Organization confuses, Crummy parking setup

This place is great. It's a total candy store. It's selection alone is responsible for half my credit card debt. They cater to all musical tastes (or so I think, since they hit all of mine). Half of the store is devoted to Classical, Opera, Jazz and World music. They've got everything an indy-rocker could desire in the other half... hip hop, alterna-what-have-you. It's all there at your finger tips. They've also got a great used CD collection. Unfortunately everyone and their mother knows so it's a parking problem and there's always a bit of a crowd but the music's good.

Watch out for your wallet! This place is so good you lose all control over the amount of money you spend. An excellent combination of new and used music in every genre you can imagine. Also, they have amazing in store performances for free!!

A very eclectic spot. Huge spectrum of music all genres pretty much...very impressive. The even have LP's!! Gotta love that vinyl! Price on new stuff pretty decent, pre-owned selection is huge. Parking however is a tale unto itself... might I suggest parking outside?

i was skeptical of the LA version of the bay area's finest record stores. no store (beside's rasputin's next door to the 2nd amoeba in berkeley) comes close to matching amoeba's selection of anything and everything.

it had everything i expected it to have but i was surprised to find some things that would have even stumped the 2 amoeba's up north. i guess it's not picked over yet like its norcal brethren. this is a good thing.

bottomline -- amoeba has an unparalleled selection of cd's and vinyl. a welcome addition to LA. good night aron's.

Pros: ton of music, another ton of music

Cons: parking can be a rig

The selection is so big that when I go in to buy one thing, I end up getting four. Prices for new stuff are decent, but there's alot to find in the used sections at $5 and up. They also give good prices if you want/need to sell off some of your collection that you don't listen/watch to anymore.

I luved all the variety of used and new music.
What i didn't understand nor like was the fact that i was trading in old cd's for credit and what the clerk wanted to take back was the least expected. i was given back some rare (in mint) choices. pluse they only wanted to pay a little for way tooo many.

After years of practice in SF, it seems that Amoeba has their business down to a science. Their selection is incomparable, their employees all personable and knowledgable, the parking surprisingly easy and free. The location can't be beat either -- right smack dab in the center of old Hollywood. Watch for cool in-store performances, too.

Having fond memories of the Amoeba in Berkeley, I was skeptical that the one on Sunset could live up to my expectations. It more than does. Upon my first visit they were playing MBV - always a good sign. Basically any cd you want, they've got. Can be a bit intimidating due to the size of the place, but overall it's well organized. Perhaps the only record store a person needs.

I had the fortune of working a block away from this music store behemoth. Whatever you want, they've got. So dangerous on payday. Always check the discount bins for CDs, often the freshly packaged CD you're carrying could be up for $5 resale. The free in-stores are a great way to catch old favorites and up-and-coming acts.

No where could I find the Knitter's album (""Poor Little Critters on the Road"") -- until I went to Amoeba. On the shelf were 18 copies of this tribute to classic country (Haggard, Carter Family). Amoeba carries classic country, and an extensive folk collection. The Irish and Latin American collections are disappointingly mainstream.

As an avid music fan, I was skeptical of the hype surrounding this store. But to my absolute surprise, Amoeba delivers on all fronts: outstanding selection, well-organized, attitude-free staff, and even parking. What's more, they even host awesome in-store appearances. Finally, L.A. has a cool record store.

Oh my god ... easily the best record store in LA. Great selection. Smart staff. CD prices can't be beat. The LP selection is good quality & reasonably priced (tho bargain shoppers can find better deals on ebay.) Love the inhouse shows. Saw Blackalicious in May & had a blast. Several hundred happy dancers in the aisles. What other record store offers that???

Amoeba is definitely the best record store in Los Angeles. Their selection of new, used and import cds and vinyl is unparalleled. If you add in the movie and dvd section (with particular eye to their stock of music titles) as well as their poster art, classical and jazz sections Amoeba surpasses expectations set by any other LA based store. Additionally, parking is convenient and the store is central for shoppers from almost any area. However, some of their so-called rarities (those items which deserve space on the wall) are furiously over priced. Check eBay first for better prices . . .

I've always found what I was looking for here. And the high trade-in value comes as a welcome surprise. Definitely worth a look.
