The facility is very clean which says a lot about a shop. The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable and they were extremely accurate on the amount of time that the work would be done on my car. Thank you for a job well done!

The owner here is the rudest person I've ever encountered. I called to make an oil change appointment in advace, and an employee offered me a ride home after I dropped my car (as they would have to keep the car for the day). When I arrived, the owner angrily refused to give me a ride ""just for an oil change"" -- even though I had been promised a ride (with a toddler and an infant). I would have respected a polite denial from the owner, but I was treated with hostility and disrespect. When we pass Lucas Tire, my children laugh and point at ""Mom's LEAST favorite place in Chicago""\r\n\r\nDon't subject yourself to these people.

I went to Lucas tire recently for some tires on my pick up. I was in and out very quickly and i couldn't have had a better experience! I was very surprised being that they where really busy but i have no complaints. Rich was very helpful and helped me choose the right tires and gave me a really good price. I highly recommend Lucas tire to anyone.

Lucas is a family-owned, family-run atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and will explain in excellent detail what is going on with your car. I am not a car person so I need things explained to me in English. If another problem is found with your car while they are doing say an oil change, they will bring you out to the car to show you (if the problem is visible). They will give you their recommendation and your options, if there are options. I have been going there for over 4 years now and have referred several friends to them. I would say, give them a try.

Good Value. My grandfather used to buy his tires here. I might be biased, but if it was good enough for gramps then it is good enough for me and my family. They treat me like family so I pay a couple bucks extra.

This is an updated review to one I previously posted. A little while ago, I had a very negative experience in customer and auto service and at Lucas Tire and scathingly wrote about it here. Recently I was surprised to receive a phone call from Rich, the owner, stating that he wished to make amends for whatever had happened. It is human nature for all of us to make mistakes and we all do, yet it is a very scarce and highly respectable anomaly for us humans to own up to them and reach out to reconcile. I was skeptical at first, given prior experience, and yet when I returned, I was continually shown the utmost respect by all staff and they went above and beyond in their reparations. I know it is impossible to find a shop/staff/owner/person that does not make a mistake and now I know that it is possible to find an auto shop that has the wherewithal to acknowledge an error and a desire to correct it...and that is priceless. This experience has served as a wonderful reminder for me that while we ALL make mistakes, it is the willingness to take ownership for them and the desire to make amends that sets the exceptional above the average

This place is your old fashioned screw the customer over type of mechanic shop. The type that creates more problems with your car than what you had before you went there. In my case I brought my suv there to have four new tires installed. After we got the truck back and drove it only a short distance the in dash display said we had a tire sensor fault, and we could hear a thumping sound. So we brought it back to lucas and they told us that we must have hit a pothole and broke the sensor that is on the inside of the tire strapped to the rim.
It seemed a little odd that this would happen right after we had tires changed. So after a very rude exchange with a so called master mechanic (greg) who basically told us that we had no clue about anything to do with cars (which we do have a clue) we left with our broken sensor. After some research on the computer and talking to some actual honest mechanics we found that 99% of the time that these sensors become damaged is from someone that does not take the proper steps while changing the tire and brakes the metal band that holds the sensor on the rim. And the only way hitting a pot hole could cause this problem is if you hit one big enough to blow out the tire and crack the rim in half and that probably wouldnt do it. So basically lucas thought we should pay for a new sensor to replace the one they broke and the labor to install the new one. So its my advise to anyone thinking about bringing a car to lucas for any reason even the smallest thing..... DON'T DO IT THEY WILL MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING. This place is in the business of ripping people off and they do a little mechanic work on the side, but there mechanic work isnt very good, but there ripping people off sure is.

Unless you like very rude, uncourteous, "talk behind your back" staff along with inexperienced shop workers who are so clumsy that they dropped my expensive wheel face down and scratched it (luckily I was there to see it, after which they told me to leave the service area due to insurance regulations). They also try to take advantage of you by trying to sell you unnecessary services. Worst tire shop I've ever been to. You will save yourself a lot of stress (and probably money as well) by taking your car somewhere else.

On September 15, 2007 I purchased 4 new tires from Lucas Tire. I recently discovered they installed the wrong size tires on my Honda Civic.\r\n\r\nWhen I originally purchased the tires the majority of my driving was short distances on city streets within Chicago. For the last 9 months, the majority of my driving involves long distances on expressways. With the onset of winter my car has handled very poorly in snowy conditions. I assumed I had bought poor quality tires back in September 2007. Today I went to purchase two new front tires from a different tire company. While shopping for new tires, I discovered that Lucas Tire had installed tires that were for a Honda Accord rather than a Honda Civic. I went to Lucas Tire to explain the mistake and he refused to replace the current tires with the correct size tires. As a result I had to buy four new tires at another tire store. \r\n\r\nObviously when I hired Lucas Tire I expected the company to install tires that met Honda's tire specifications. I am appalled that Lucas Tire knowingly equipped my car with tires that caused my car to maneuver less safely in winter conditions which in turn jeopardized my safety and the safety of my passengers. \r\n

My breaks went out in front of this place, so I pulled in... and thus began the worst car related nightmare of my life.

They repaired my breaks --for what turned out to be twice the price originally quoted-- and threw in a bunch of free oil change coupons. I did go back for the oil change and they found lots of things wrong with my car. I didn't think that I really needed those repairs, so I didn't agree to get that work done, but not long after that, my gears went out completely.

So, I had my car towed over there and the next day the mechanic called to say that I needed transmission work, and by the way, a brand new battery too --even though I'd never had a problem with old one. But, silly me, I okay the work, which I was told was going to take a few days. After a few days, I call to find out about the progress of my car and, "No, it's not ready yet". Finally, after about a week, I call and they say, "Okay, your car is back", and I'm like, "Back from where?" Turns out they sent my car out to their "transmission guy" in River Grove(?) --without my prior knowledge or permission!

So I go over to Lucas and it turns out that my car is NOT there yet. They tell me that "the tow truck broke down" and my car won't be back until the next day. So, the next day, I go over there and my car is back and I pay a fortune for a rebuilt transmission and a new battery.

Less than a week later, I double park at my job and put my blinkers on for about 10 minutes and my battery dies. I was furious, since that was supposed to be a new battery, so I get a jump and take it back to Lucas. They look at it and claim that there's something wrong with the connections. I say I paid for a new battery and I want a new battery, and that it should be under warranty. So they say they're putting in a new battery and end up charging me in labor and fees what amounts to the cost of another new battery.

Lo and behold, another week goes by and again my battery dies. So I take a look inside and I see that what's in there is a filthy dirty battery that is clearly not new. I took it back and insisted on an entirely new battery and they gave me a hard time, but I eventually did get a new battery.

HOWEVER, my breaks are giving me problems again and, ever since my transmission was "rebuilt", my gears have not shifted smoothly. So, now I have to take my car somewhere else to determine the damage.

Honestly, after all this, I can't help but wonder if they sabatoge cars over there so that folks will come back. Plus, they've managed to get thousands of dollars out of me and I still have the same kinds of problems with my car...

What a horrible and seemingly never-ending experience. Definitely stay away from these unethical scammers!!

BTW, not long ago, I saw Rich Lucas interviewed on a local cable news show about the pot hole problem in Chicago, and he commented that it costs $1000 to replace a tire rim! I could not believe the interviewer didn't question him about price gouging. I know someone who hit a pothole and had to replace a tire rim last winter and it cost her $35.

I took my Acura TL with about 90,000 miles. I took it there for a new tire, one was leaking. They said that I should replace two of them, but 2 were good. I told them to do what they had to do. They also said that my front brakes needed to be done, routers and all. Again, I just said do it. I did not ask price.... I did not think about it.... The girl on the phone said something about not putting money into a car with that many miles...? I know my car is not new, but I place to have it until I get 150,000. It's a nice car and I would say it is still worth about $10,000. Anyways... They fix the car..... A couple weeks later I was driving it and I notice that it was shaking when I put the breaks on at about 50mph+. I took it back in and they kept it over night and when I called back they said there was nothing wrong with it. They said that they would resurface the routers and maybe that would fix the problem. I thought that maybe it would too... I was wrong.. Same things. I brought it in again and I was told the owner drove it home this night....? Anyways.. No big deal use my car as you personal car, strange, but whatever... He said it was not doing it anymore.... Get the car back and there is an open Coke in my cup holder, still 1/2 full... If you want to drive it home, at least get your Coke out. Long story short. I'm sick of this place, and though I have had several good experiences with them, they do not care if there is an issue. I'm going to take my car to Midas, get the lifetime warranty, and not worry about it. (Oh, and I did have a friend that is a mechanic look at it... He said the reason it is shaking.... They use cheap parts. The brake is actually melting from the heat. Again, I'll need to replace pads and routers.)

Cons: Everything

I have had two service experiences at Lucas. Most recenlty I had a some work done and new tires on a 1999 Pathfinder. I have found Lucas Tire to be very helpful, courteous, senstive about cost, and trustworthy. They take time to discuss what is needed and why. For example I needed new shocks but upon examination they found I only needed two. I asked for a tune up but they said I was ok with my plugs and wires for a few months since the expense of teh other items was high. They also repaired a damaged mirror for $100; it would have been over $250 at a body shop. I plan to take all my automotive work to them. I highly recommend them.

My neighbor recommended Lucas for muffler work. I now know I should have come to this site first, would have learned alot. Okay heres the story: A garage specializing in Hondas replaced my clutch this week. I knew there was also a problem with my muffler/exhaust, so I had them look at this too, was told the muffler did indeed require replacement but the ** rest of the exhaust was fine.** He said he could replace the muffler but recommended having the work done at a muffler shop to save money because he only dealt with Honda parts. (nice guys there at haas). Didn't tell the folks at Lucas this thinking I would see if they'd try to rip me off. They tried. The estimate was for way more than just the muffler. (muffler + additional tail-pipe. total $180. A muffler should run $80-$100 max). My mistake was not knowing they'd charge me $25 for looking at my car. Just one person reading this and choosing to go anywhere other than Lucas Tires on Western ave. and it's worth it. As for my neighbor--he owes me a beer.

I bought four New Tires for my Nissan Altima in 2006 and in 2007 tires were dry rotting. Brought my vehicle in and had them check them out and was told that this was normal. Wow! I've work in the auto industry for over 14 years and was surprised when I was told this. The Owner is only nice at the beginning of the Sale and after that his a jerk. I was recommended by TireRack.com what a mistake that was never again will I recommend this place. Please be WARNED stay away...

I've been a customer for quite some time, as I used to live near the store, and everyone has always been professional and courteous. You may have to wait for your oil change or tire rotation-as they're always pretty busy, especially on the weekends. I've got no complaints regarding new tires or repairs. There was one experience, though....the mechanic accidentally left his wrench on my front passenger seat. Horrors! So I turned around and brought it back. They were very thankful and apologetic. Very nice people there. Good product, good prices, family-owned and operated. Definitely the way to go if you prefer good treatment from a local neighborhood business rather than a chain store (i've had some bad experiences with those). I often see the owner at local restaurants or charity functions and he always remembers his customers. I moved out of that area a couple years ago and still take the car back to Lucas for work.

Pros: good service, family shop

It is so nice to still have some places around that are "old time honest." I went to Lucas last week with a screw in one of my tires. Went for a walk, and, by the time I got back, they had taken off the tire and seen that the screw had not gone through, yanked it, and I was good to go.

And, then they said: "No Charge." I told them they had to take something, but they refused, but said I could tip the worker. I surely appreciate their way of doing business. One day there will be no more places that would even do a small job, and , let alone, not charge anything.

This week, I had noticed my low tire pressure light on. I thought I needed a new tire and returned to Lucas to get one. As it turned out, I did not need a new tire (even though they could have sold me one).

What triggered my (low pressure) light was that one of the back tires was really low on air even though it did not look the least bit flat. Even though they had taken two tires off my car and checked them for leaks - they were not going to charge me. I made them take $20 and I gave the mechanic a $10 tip.

Honesty and good service are alive and well at Lucas Tire.

I had some work done to my car at Lucas Tire and Auto. I dropped my car off and they called me with the diagnostics and estimate. They described around $1050 worth of repairs that should be done to my car. I had most of the work done ($800) leaving filters and 1 small part. The check engine light was still on which I anticipated. I took the car back there a couple weeks later to get the other part replaced and to essentially turn the light off which the technician said would happen. They ordered and replaced the part. The check engine light was still on and they could not tell me why. I was then berated by the front desk lady (who couldn't stop eating her chips and salsa while yelling at me) for having the work done on a Saturday because the ""guy"" who does diagnostics wasn't there on Saturdays. When I called prior to this day to order the part, they were more than happy to get my business on Saturday. So, in protest I paid, and left with my car with the check engine light still illuminated.\r\n\r\nI then realized my cell phone was missing while on my drive home and returned to Lucas Auto to reclaim it as I was talking on it when I entered Lucas Auto. I inquired to its whereabouts and asked the same lady if anyone could have grabbed it so it wouldn't get lost and she said, ""I don't know, maybe I ate it."" I could not make this up. The gentleman waiting in line behind my burst into laughter and could not believe his ears. A young lady filling out paperwork turned and said, ""It?s been like this all day.""\r\n\r\nI've never reviewed anything in my life, positively or negatively, I just don?t have the time and frankly I don?t care if other people get screwed at the same place that I did. In this case however, I felt compelled to try to warn other Chicagoans to go anywhere else, anywhere, regardless of anything that could possibly make you want to go to this place.\r\n\r\nGood luck Lucas Auto, you'll need plenty of it to stay open.

i called several places looking for a specific type of tire, i called lucas tire and the owner seemed very helpful over the phone, even though they didn't carry exactly what i was looking for, i decided to go ahead purchased four new tires, this was about a year and a half ago, recently my tire started to slowly leak air, so i took it to another shop (the reason i didn't go back to Lucas will become obvious later in this tale). I thought the seal on this tire had been broken or something. to my suprise, the tech tells me the tire has been plugged. What! I told him that's impossible, i purchase these tires brand new a little over a year ago, and have never had them plugged. in fact, up until now i haven't had a problems w/ them. sure enough the tech shows me the plug that is coming out of the tire. Now, in my opinion Lucas Tire royally screwed me!! Mr. Lucas says, well, your wife or kids or someone else must have had it plugged. Well, i don't have kids, have never loaned my car to anyone, and my wife would certainly tell me if the tire went flat and needed to be fix. The bottom line. I must have been sold a used tire. At least that's the way i see it. choose to believe Lucas Tire or believe my story. take your pick. Now, the reason it didn't take it back to the Lucas to begin with was just flat out poor service. My vehicle ended up having some other work done while i was in there (which now i think i was probably screwed on that too), but was still suppose to be completed that same day. i ended up picking my vehicle several days later. also, after looking Lucas up on better bus bureau there seems to be something shady going on. Lucas Tire is 'officially closed' with several unresolved complaints, but there is another tire store with the same address listed. Weird. I suggest you find another place to have your tires done. Good luck.

My car was making this loud noise I didn??t know what to do. A friend told me to take it to Lucas Tire. The girl at the counter was very friendly and helped me. She explained in detail what was wrong and how much it would cost. They fixed my car in one day and it works great! Being a woman and not knowing anything about cars I feel very please with Lucas Tire. I highly recommend them and will use them again the next time my car needs anything. Thanks

I took my car in for a tune-up, attracted to the place by their website...they seemed to be a great family business and I wanted to support a local, non-chain business. When I got there, I was inititally helped by the owner, a very nice older man. At some point, his daughter took over my transaction. She explained to me that I would need about $1200 worth of work on it if I had any intention ""on keeping my car more than a few thousand more miles."" I told her I only wanted to get the necessary work done (~$70) to last me a few more weeks so that I could budget for the main work needed. She told me it would be done in an hour. When I got the bill, it was $350. She had gone ahead and had other work done on it without my permission but claimed that I gave her authorization. She started yelling at me and insulting me (hardcore) in front of the other customers and staff, almost as if she was trying to show-off (very bizarre behavior). I have never been attacked like this in a service, and I consider myself a very passive and calm person. I never raised my voice, but only questioned why it was done. After about an additional 10 minutes of verbal attack, she told me that I would have to now pay the mounting and dismounting fees, which I find to be ridiculous since I had not authorized any of that additional work. But, like an idiot, in the end I paid for the additional work since she was determined not to let me leave without paying for the additional labor. Serves me right for not reading the reviews ahead of time I guess. I will NEVER waste my money and time at this business again. I feel bad for the owner (I think he was her father) because he was so incredibly nice. Too bad one bad staff member taints the whole business.

So I took a trip down to chicago for a few days, I'm from MN.\r\n\r\nAs I'm leaving town my car jerks, and all my dash lights come on. Broken Timing belt. So I pull over in to a nearby strip mall parking lot.\r\n\r\nI get a phone book and call the first name I find for towing, which happens to be Lucas Tire and Auto (this was mistake number one though I could hardly know it then.) So Guy shows up hooks me up and we go to lucas, which turns out to be a block away, maybe less. He then proceeds to charge me $145 bucks. Ok, I didn't ask how much it would cost, my fault, a gauge but still, I didn't ask.\r\n\r\nSo I fill out the paperwork and go to stay with my friend. Stranded in Chicago with the clothes on my back. It ends up taking these guys 4 days to change my timing belt and the tensioner. Not the biggest job in the world. They charged me $1200 dollars to do so. They broke a piece off the cam shaft by apparently using the wrong tool. They did NOT set the timing belt properly, something I didn't discover until I was half way home to MN and my car started jerking. Also they put in a faulty tensioner. All of which took them FOUR days to complete. So I end up having to take the car back in when I get to minnesota and the guy has to tear the engine apart again to properly time the belt(chain) and discover that there is a faulty tensioner installed. This only costs me $242 for approximately the same thing the guys at Lucas Tire and Auto charged me $1200 to fix.\r\n\r\nAs for customer service I believe they lied to me about the amount of time it took to get the part and about the amount of time they were working on it. They were also extremely rude at times. \r\n\r\noverall the experience was disastrous, the only thing I got out of it was a little bit of street smarts.

Pros: None, they shouldn't be operating as a business

Cons: Everything, every single aspect of the experience was wanting
