At a doctor's office, the office staff are the first people you interact with - from the inital phone call to schedule the appointment to the time you check in. No matter how fantastic the doctor, who wants to call an office and speak to rude staff members? Or go days without returned calls when a referral is needed - or be shuffled from person to person and voicemail to voicemail. The staff is the face of the office. From the inital cold and short conversation to schedule to the "umm-humm" and then dialtone when the conversation is over (no thanks, goodbye, or have a nice day). The staff at Fuquay Peds is unfortunately burdened dealing with calls or the patients, and they make that quite clear. As a business owner myself, my recommendation: Keep the doctors, but "clean house" with the office staff - start over and try to rebuild your reputation (google search for reviews) with pleasant staff before your patients start exploring other avenues - there are more options out there!

My son was a patient at Fuquay Peds from age one until age nine. Until today, that is. They've been moderately good over the years at providing service, but now--my son has more than basic needs, since he's having issues with his immune system and we've been going to Duke for special care. Now his doctor there wants us to have CBCs run for six weeks, twice a week to check levels in my son's bloodwork--and guess what? Even tho Duke says using my son's pediatrician is fine, and I would think letting my son go somewhere that he's familiar with during this scary time when he's having to get stuck with needles so often would be a GOOD thing and something any CARING person would want to accommodate--Lisa, the scheduling nurse at Fuquay Peds said it would simply "inconvenience their staff" too much to spend those five minutes with my son twice a week, and we'll just have to use a sterile outside lab instead.
So, if you know that your child is going to always just have sniffles and every day problems--Fuquay Peds is probably okay. They're obviously equipped for that. But if your child should get really sick, you'll be told that you and your child better hit the road. Best remember that from the start.

Update: After contacting someone else at the Cary office, and arguing the point, Fuquay Peds did reverse their original stance on this. In fact, they contacted our doctor at Duke and asked if a finger stick would work vs. the CBCs my son originally needed--and Duke said yes, that would work--so in the end they helped create a situation where my son is having to deal with less invasive tests. I am grateful for that, and grateful that they took the time to follow up.

I am still frustrated that they couldn't find it in themselves to be proactive about this, and that it took me getting angry and upset and going to someone above the original chain of command to get to this result. Still, we are here now, and I wanted to give them proper credit for getting us here.

As a new patient, we only visited this office twice. My first visit they ran almost an hour past my appt. time before I was called back and then I felt rushed through my appt. The next time was not much better and was again rushed through my appt. The lady at the checkout was practically arguing with a customer on the phone while I stood there. Very unprofessional. I had two occassions to call into the office for information and schedules and was treated rudely. Upon calling to cancel my son's next appt. I mentioned I would be switching practices and the only response was..."Oh, okay, thanks".

I have been very pleased with Fuquay-Varina Pediatrics. They have provided care for my oldest and now with my child who was just born, and I have had nothing but good experiences with them. I have seen several of the doctors and other practitioners in the practice, and have been happy with their care. I highly recommend this practice to other parents.
