I don't know how anybody in their right mind wouldn't love this vet, I had a cat that was put through the ringer by other vets that only wanted money and we happened to find Dr. Kalthoff and we couldn't be happier. He takes the time to listen, he is the most compassionate Vet ever, and he doesn't do unnecessary tests or procedures to drive up the cost of the bill. We ended up having to put our 19 year old Cat to sleep, he was so mistreated by other vets and had become blind from a stroke, and Dr. Kalthoff was going to come to our home to do it but we ended up knowing it was the time before we could make the appointment. They fit us in right away, and we didn't know which way to go, we knew but we couldn't make ourselves decide and Dr. Kalthoff just sat with us, he didn't rush us, we joke now that he would have stayed with us all day until we made our minds up, and he just explained the symptoms from the Lymphoma that he had and what OUR CAT was feeling and how he knew that we had done so much for our angel and we could really do no more except let him either continue to go on like he was, or put him to sleep. We will never forget the kindness that each and every one of the people at Butterfield Animal Hospital showed us during that time, and it made something that was the hardest thing my wife and I ever went through tolerable and just that much easier for us to decide. We have gotten a new rescue kitty now and you better believe that the ONLY vet that we will ever use is Dr. Kalthoff, we couldn't and wouldn't imagine ever going to anyone else

My experience is also not the same as others. Sorry that they had issues, I have only good experiences. I have two rescued German Shepherds that have some issues and have been treated with respect even when the symptoms weren't matching any common diagnosis. So instead of charging me tons of dollars we together decide how to proceed. My girls and my mom's dog see Dr Kalkoff. He saved my mom's dog with surgery and new diet. Yes short term was with the dog food they carry and then moved on with less expensive once they learned they can't give her junk food. The staff educates my parents and myself to be better dogie parents to our specific animal. They know our dogs by name, get on the floor with my big girl that really doesn't trust and without reservation she responds to them. Animals really know more than we do, if my girls like them so do I. "Allie" gives my parents a reason to get out of bed in the morning so I am grateful for DR. keeping the quality of life for my parents so they didn't have to feel the loss of their best friend.

My experiences have been different than the other posters. I have brought my dog in on 3 different occasions for emergency treatment. I called them when I was on my way (I live 2 minutes from there) and they took my little one in right away and cared for her. There was no question that I would have to wait. I walked into the office and someone came to me right away. I have found them caring and competent.
If tests (blood or otherwise) or films are suggested they discuss them first with me and let me decide the course of action I want to take. I can agree with them or not but they do give the necessary information to make a decision. I have never felt that a test was not offered that would make a difference in my pet's treatment. If I want to know price, they tell me before I agree, if I feel it might not be necessary I can wait or not do it at all. Everyone has their own comfort level with regard to these things. An infection (fever and/or other indicators might warrant antibiotics without taking bloodwork and oftentimes bloodwork is unnecessary - like when humans go to the doctor. I usually see Dr Kalthoff, but have seen Dr. Reidel as well. She tested my dog for everything when I was last there. What a bill, but it was all at my discretion. I wanted a full work-up and I got one.
While not inexpensive, I feel their fees are on par with others.
They do not push vaccinations like some other vets, which I appreciate. I like this vet particularly because or their attitude. They make sure I am comfortable with my dog's care.
Sorry about the other posters situations. My experience has been the opposite.

The first time I took my dog to the Butterfield Animal Hospital, it was because he'd been lethargic, not eating or drinking or even pooping for several days. When we got there we found he'd lost .8 pounds since the last time he was weighed. His temperature was very high, but Everything checked out OK - physical exam, x-rays - until Dr. Riedel did a final exam and found sharp plastic pieces in his colon. She worried about perforated bowel but didn't do blood work to see if there was infection!

Two days later when we brought him back with the same symptoms worsening, as well as the additional symptom of cloudy eyes (which I later discovered is a sign of high White Blood Cells), he had lost even more weight but she didn't even *offer* blood work. In my book, not doing a simple WBC check on a dog whom she previously thought might have a perforated intestine and who presented with a new symptom consistent with high WBC is flat negligent.

The dog continued to get worse, and worse. It even got to the point where we had to have "the talk" with our children about how the dog might not make it.

Miraculously he turned around nine days after becoming ill in the first place, and no thanks to Butterfield Animal Hospital. I intend to request that blood work finally be done to make sure he's not going to relapse, and I fully intend to file a complaint with the state board of veterinary medicine. This "oversight" or whatever you want to call it is simply inexcusable. Needless to say, we won't be going back to Butterfield Animal Hospital.
