It's a bit loud in here for a dinner for two to be romantic, but the lamb is excellent. It may be a bit myopic of me, but I tend to order it every time. It never disappoints. The staff is attentive and the bar area is nice, albeit crowded.

Pros: Amazing Lamb

Cons: Loud, Crowded

The parking may be a problem, unless you want to pay the valet $12 for it for no more than 3 hours. If you have a big dog, I would not recommend to bring it here, because there is very little room on the patio. The claimed dish for dogs is not given at all, just a bowl of water, unless you want to order something of the menu for you pet. The Tuesday special is just for people who sit at the bar, so if you want it then do not bring a dog.

I came here during restaurant week with an open mind, and a positive attitude.

I left feeling bitter and cynical.

There were a few positives, thus the two stars, as opposed to one. The atmosphere is nice, thought a bit more dull than I was expecting. I was very excited to see that they served Lindemans Framboise beer. I had had it once before in NYC, for $14 for a bottle. It was expensive, but it was delicious and the bottle filled my glass twice, so I thought it was worth it. When I saw it one the menu here for $10, I ordered it immediately. But this time, no bottle! Just one glass! I had the baked brie for an appetizer. It was fine, but my friend's beer-cheese beignets were amazing! The service was fine, nothing to complain about.

Now the negative: For my main course, I ordered "The Famous Shrimp Bag." I like to think when a restaurant modifies any item with the words "the famous" it means that they do a really good job with it. Apparently, I'm wrong. They could've called it "The Famous Salt Bag" to make it far more appropriate. (I'm sure you can come up with other nouns to fill in there.) The pastry bag was filled with a mix of rice, herbs, shrimp, and mushrooms with no discernible flavor, other than salt, a flavor that was echoed by the lobster sauce that surrounded the bag. I appreciated my sweet beer all the more, as it was perfect for washing the taste of the food out of my mouth.

Needless to say, I won't be going back to pay an absurd amount of money for food that might give me a stroke.

The meal was outstanding in every regard right down to the authentic French hard crust bread. The wine list was excellent in both quality of wines offered and value. The atmosphere was extremely nice and romantic, The only negative is the service staff. The bartender was not customer conscious, i.e. it took a while to get his attention and the waitress was very inattentive and slow. But overall we would highly recommend Brasserie Jo and deffinitely will be back.

I have been to Brasserie JO on social accounts many times and loved the food and the service! I decided to host a corporate event there recently and had great feed back! From booking the room, customizing a menu to the execution of the actual night, everything was right on! My colleagues were given choices of the lamb, skate and steak au poivre as entree choices. The lamb was brought out a prefect med-rare and the skate was wonderful and fresh. The Sommelier paired the perfect wine choices with our food-free of charge. The server was there when we needed him and was able to be quiet while clearing places during our power point presentation. We will be back again!

I have been here twice and I really did not find this food to be very authentic French at all, even though staff courteous and helpful. I have spoiled by living in France-Italy and this menu has been Americanized. The cuisine choices are not bad, however for the price they should be better. The atmosphere is bistro-like and waitstaff decent.

When I first arrived in Chicago, I asked some fellow French expats which French restaurant they would recommend for simple fares. One of the first that was mentioned was Jean Joho's 2nd restaurant (he's the chef at Everest), Brasserie Jo, which fares gastronomie from the Alsace region. Well let me tell you, I was disappointed the first 3 times I went to eat there and almost gave up. It finally took the 4th attempt for me to finally like the food. Each previous attempt was simply subpar, and I tried many items on the menu. The 4th time, it was a special pharmaceutical dinner and the food was simply delicious, so good in fact that I cannot give a rating less than 4 stars, even though I've had more bad experiences there than good ones. In all fairness, I'd have to say that the wine selection was good, the atmosphere was good as well. And the food that day (can't remember quite what I had) was some of the best French I had in the city to that point.

Average everything..service was good. Roast Chicken was nice but fries had black eyes from potatoes and tasted of old fat. Chicken mousse was a pate and tasted cheap, like store bought.
Still looking for a really authentic Chicago Brasserie AKA Les Halles or Orsay in NYC.

I ate over Thanksgiving 2006. Overally, I never got the impression that anyone working there was happy to have me as a customer. Service was very weak, could have been my waitress. She rarely came by, I had to continuously flag down others. Certainly she didn't know anything about wine. I asked her what type of grape the Rose was, and she said chardonnay. Hmmmm. I ordered the skate wing - it tasted like mush. It the worst fish I ever had at a restaurant. To boot, they skimped on both wine poors, not the kind of place to enjoy a nice, full glass of vino. The only positive note is that my fiancee's steak was good. There are plenty of places that are much better. I will never go back. Finally, and this is more a matter of personal taste than anything else, the music was akin to techno the whole night - not something I would have imagined.

Went with 4 women on a Sunday night. We had heard about the baquette-in-a-bag, but they were out of them and we got basket of bread slices. Little disappointing. Great waiter, wine was very nice, menu was OK, food was very good tasting, atmosphere is fun, and desert was scrumptious. I guess when we don't get to Chicago very often, we just want the whole package, and the sans baquette put a dent in it all.

Wife and I were first timers. This restaurant is for the young and young at heart. It's noisy but patrons seem to be happy. Steak Frittes and Salmon entrees were well portioned and tasty.

Mini loaf of bread is presented in a bread bag. Wines were good but would have appreciated some 1/2 bottle offerings.

Best was the porfiteroles - made with the best ice cream we have ever had. After having these there is no possible way one could go home hungry.

Very good value.

Met Chef JoJo - an icon and a gentleman!

Service was average at best. The soup du jour was mediocre. My $8.50 glass of wine was warm!!! The quality of the main entree's was poor to awful. My husband ordered the classis steak and it was by far the saddest cut of beef he has seen in a long time. For approx. $20 you get a tough cut of beef (it was med/rare) and some soggy french fries! No veg. no salad! I felt as though we had just ordered something from a local hotdog stand. My Swordfish was O.K., a little too overwelhming with the Poivre. Defintely not worth the price. Will not go back. Too many other good restaurants in town.

Overpriced, noisy, very mediocre food. You can do MUCH better than this place in Chicago. I've been very disappointed in other "Lettuce Entertain You" restaurants in the last couple years. I think this organization is only concerned with being trendy and making as much $$ as possible. Quality is definitely going downhill fast.

We took my dog here for his 1st bday (since the patio is tres friendly pour chiens) and all of us loved it. His steak tartare disappeared before our eyes and he felt quite special drinking from the fancy silver bowls. Everything WE ate was delicious too, the baguette in a bag was perfectly baked and still warm and the carrots were a nice touch too. I had the shrimp bag filled with shrimp, lobster sauce, peas, and rice....it was perfectly rich and satisfying. For dessert we tried the profiteroles and I can understand why they are famous. Warm chocolate sauce drizzled over them at our table was a nice touch. My dog and I both give this place two paws up!

For our appetizers I chose a goat cheese torte with tomatoes and peppers. I swear to god Ive never had anything so incredibly light in my life! I also chose the fantastic Onion soup with Gruyere. The oysters on a half shell were immensely good. The manager gave us a beautiful plate of Salmon and Dill on small toasted baguettes compliments of the chef.
For dinner we had Potato Gnocchi with Bleu Cheese and Walnut the epitome of rich food! Also the Rack of Lamb with Parsley Mustard Crust - iIt was crispy on the outside but very tender on the inside and not gamy at all. It was perfection on the palate.
For dessert we ordered this beautifully layered pear, vanilla ice cream and chocolate mouse delicacy. It melted in our mouths and left us wanting more.
We felt like royalty and everyone was so fantastic.

Brasserie Jo lived up to it's reputation! I had the Shrimp Bag which was absolutely delicious. My husband had the Beer Spare Ribs and he loved them. My only complaint was the dinner salad -- nothing special so don't waste your $7.00. And the Beer Soup tasted like my mother's roast gravy. Every meal I've had here has been delicious. Highly recommend it.

From the moment we (party of 3) walked through the door, the experience was wonderful! The food was excellent (the smoked salmon appetizer and the chicken coc au vin entree topped the list!). Our server made perfect recommendations and was outstanding. Unfortunately, we opted for dessert elsewhere ("Sugar"...see THAT review). We should have stayed at Brasserie Jo to complete a perfect dining experience--my fault!

The rating of the depends a lot on what your order. Seafood dishes are generally good, particualry the bouillabaisse (on Friday nights) and skate wing (every night). My favorite is the steak tartar. Coq au vin, steak au poivre and rack of lamb are all good bets. Coq en feu is bland and is prone to coming out cold. Baguettes are excellent. Salads are so-so as are the selections on the wine menu.

As an event coordinator, I could not have been more disappointed with the service and menu. They got our orders completely wrong, put meat in the vegetarian plates and forgot to bring out our desserts. We had 15 physicians out of 15 physicians who were on my neck after the event was over. What a horrific experience. Watch out.

This is an excellent restaurant.. the price and food are both great! Try the chicken liver pate, it's delish! Oh, and disregard the review by opendorz, it's ignorant. Skate wing is supposed to be stringy. No wonder the waiter ignored you. It's like complaining, "This wine is very wet! Every time I tip my glass, it spills!"

Very nice atmosphere, reasonable prices and portions. But...we ordered Skate Wing, a fish we were not familiar with. It was stringy and so salty you couldn't bear it. Upon complaint, the waiter did nothing. We tipped low, and much to our surprise the mater di comes over and accusses us of this transgression. He was a real jerk!

Brasserie Jo is stylish, upscale (without feeling snooty), convivial--all around a great restaurant. Hearty French fare is presented simply--oven-fresh bread is served in paper baguette bags--and the service is gracious. It's a great place for a late supper or an evening out with friends.
