I've been a faithful customer of Ms. Tootsie's since its inception. And have referred hundreds of customers and never have a received such a negative response as the one I read from the customer from Kansas City, MO being disappointed in the food. Where are you from????? Kansas City, MO, what do you know about real soul food or places to eat it. Maybe that explains it. First, South Street is not a back alley. Anyone who visits Philadelphia knows thats one of the places your told to take in. So, I ask again, where are you from? These remarks are as insulting and off beat as Mayor Negans remarks on the cleanliness of Philadelphia. As far as the size being the size of a living room. I've never visited a nicer living room setting. I guess you have. Who said the restaurant had to be a certain size. As far as food preparation and seasonings, I really can't comment on those, but one thing I know, that's never been an issue. Kraft stock would be overwhelming if it had Ms. Tootsie's doing its Macaroni & Cheese. So why not send me some of the Peach Tree's Soul Food from Kansas City, MO and let some real soul food lovers taste what you call Soul Food. I'd put Ms. Tootsie's up against the best from anywhere. And of course you said the price was $10.00 and its a buffet. Ms. Tootsie's is not a buffet. We don't have many of those (Soul Food Buffets) here in Philly. I guess thats why we cherish Ms. Tootsies. Next time your in Philly please be sure to try Ms. Tootsie's again. Maybe your taste buds were a little off that day. You will definitely have a different opinion of them.

Pros: The Food

Cons: Wait Time

.

the saturday night wait was horrendous. you have to wait outside and on a cold night, that's not cool. 1hr to be seated and then 45 minutes to be served our entrees. when my entree arrived i was told it would take an extra 20mins for my green beans. i opted for the cabbage because i was famished by this time. considering the wait, the food was OK. cornbread, sweet tea, fried chicken wings, yams were GREAT!! i didn't like my mac & cheese though. the cheese was more velveeta than hard cheddar. i was expecting baked mac & cheese. next time i'll take my fried chicken to go!

Wait time= ZERO
Friendliness of server= WONDERFUL
Ambiance= COZY
Food= ALL THUMBS UP!!
Prices= NOT BAD
Tea= OUT OF THIS WORLD

This was my 1st trip to Ms. Tootsies and I must say this place is DA BOMB..Keven you have outdid yourself with this one. Loved it..The Cheesy Cheese MAc/Cheese is wonderful and the Sweet Potato Cheesecake is sooo creamy and good it will make you want to pop yo momma..

The only drawback is the waiting area, which is non-existent..Thankfully we did not have to wait at all.

I will be returning to Philly in November for the opening our your new place right next door (11/3/06).

My only suggestion, beside the waiting area, is to order Pound Cakes from my mother-in-law, because unfortunately hers is creamier, fluffier, and tastier than the Lemon butter pound cake.

I went to Ms. Tootsie's when it first opened and the food was great and the service was good; but that was because my boyfriend at the time knew one of the waitresses. After she left, we saw how this restaurant really treats their customers! Every waiter/waitress I have had since then has been absolutley rude and so has the management. I went one time and the waiter was barely audible and looked like we were annoying him by even eating there. However, the food is good so I tried to give it another chance. I took some of my colleagues from work there and told them how the service was so-so but the food was excellent. Well, I have never been so embarassed in my life! Our waiter was so rude and nasty it was a sin. He damn near threw our food at us and being the only person of color at the table, I felt like I wanted to apologize and tell them that not all Black owned restaurants are like this. He spoke down to everyone at the table and belittled us. This was in 2002 and I just went back yesterday for the first time since then. I was skeptical because of my past experiences but my friend really wanted to go so I agreed. Well, they told us our wait time was 30-45 min so we waited OUT IN THE COLD and then when we asked if our table was ready they said that it would be ANOTHER HOUR! I could n't believe it. The manager told us that our waitress was new and made a mistake with our wait time. She screamed well it's nothing we can do, we can't make people move so you're just going to have to wait. WHAT!! I just have to wait out in the cold for ANOTHER HOUR so I can have something that my mom can make just as good. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, I love the juice, but the service is so not worth it. PLEASE DON'T SUPPORT THIS RESTAURANT until they step up their customer service. Go to Savannah's at 19th and Callowhill or Crescent City for soul food. We went to Crescent City and had the total opposite experience. Ms. Tootsie's is atrocious.

My first time dining at this quaint avenue of the arts hot spot, the reputation that preceeds your visit will not prepare you for the cuisine your about to feast on. This is the best southern soul food on the east coast. Making me doubt my own mothers cooking. An avid traveler, the philadelphia heat was no match for Cafe 3801's Famous Tropical Blend Ice Tea. An addictive concoction made from a secret family recipe, prepared in take home bike bottles. Not much of a meat eater, I was surprised to find a hearty menu of fresh seafood selections. The portions were enough for a midnight snack or a business lunch the following day. I appreciate the hands on service from the Ms. Tootsies staff and management. They gave me the history of the company, updates on the new Ms. Tootsies opening next door in the fall, as well as the 411 found on their website. Good Food and Excellent Service are hard to come by in the restaurant business. I hope the Best Soul Food on the East Coast keeps up the good work, and doesn't change the formula.

Ms Tootsie's offers excellent food. The Mac & Cheese is Delicious. Portions are Huge. I don't drink ICED Tea but EVERYONE loves it. IT's served with a small wedge of watermelon in it. The beverages are served in sports bottles, so they are a bit overpriced. The food is inexpensive and worth much more than the price. This is the best soul food in Philadelphia. The recipes seem to be traditional. They're not playing around with trying to reinvent the soul food wheel.

Every since my first fisit to Ms. Tootsie's when it first opened, I have recommended Ms. Tootsie's to all my friends. I go there at least 4 times a month I really enjoy the food. Last night was the first time I had a not so nice experience at Ms. Tootsie's. I went to the restuarant with a party of 5(4 adults and 1 child) When I received my bill I was charged a gratuity, I was never told about the gratuity charge and I had already left the waiter a $40.00 tip on the table.

While away on business, I was searching for the Soul Food restaurant Philly is famous for. I saw some information on Patti LaBelle's show, and through some research I found Ms. Tootsies Soul Food Cafe. It felt so good to appreciate southern cooking, I could tell the staff understood the menu and had actually enjoyed the food themselves. I had Sadiki's Catfish with the cheesiest macaroni and cheese, and buttery sweet yams. For me, this was an ultimate stop on the map for real Philly soul. My next visit, will include friends and family. Hopefully in time for the grand opening of the new Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Cafe right next door!

I would not recomend this place for people from the south or if you been to more than one soulfood restaurant. A little to much of a soup kitchen atmosphere, but i can see they were trying with the decorating. Service was very slow and food needed more seasoning and they took so long with our food we just tasted it (food) and packed up.

Kevin Parker did it right when he established this great soul food spot. The place is new, clean, and hip, yet the food was still phenomenal. Fried chicken was great. Homemade sweet iced tea is tasty and comes in this huge take-home water bottle although it gets a bit sweet towards the end. It's busy on Sunday with the after-church crowds, but it was worth the wait for me.

The Food at Ms. Toostie's is sooooooooooo good. I always get the catfish, yams, mac and cheese, iced tea (the best!) and for dessert sweet potato cheese cake. The staff there is very friendly from the moment you walk in until you are leaving on a full stomach, which you are guaranteed to walk out with. You get so much food for such a reasonable price and the atmosphere is just perfect, though the restaurant is a bit too small. This is a perfect place for a first date or just a nice evening out with friends or family. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants some great soul food for a reasonable price or just great food with great service period.

I really enjoyed the food @ Ms. Tootsie's. Everyone was very nice my husband & I felt like we were home. Everyone made you feel like you were welcomed. My husband ordered the catfish. The catfish was very tastey!! I had the fried chicken! Which was also good! The only thing I did not like was that it is very small in there. I felt like I was sitting tooooo close to the other customers. It was cozy but toooo cozy. I think Ms. Tootsie's should think about getting a larger place. Besides that I really enjoyed the food.

One can surely miss Ms. Tootsie's while driving down South St. The inside decor is beautiful! My boyfriend and I were seated immediately and given hot homemade biscuits moments after. The service was impeccable. Our waitress was very attentive, helpful and kind. I ordered Fried Chicken which came with two sides. Our drinks came plastic water-bottles to take home as souvenirs! Our food arrived promptly. The portions of the food were UNBELIEVABLE. Entrees run from $12 - $25 but they're worth it. Neither of us could finish our dishes. I ordered Chocolate Cake. SO chocolatey, SO moist, SO delectable, SO sinful. Our waitress even gave me an adorable takeaway bag. I can't praise the service enough; they are always checking on us. All in all, I highly recommend Ms. Tootsie's. It is certainly one of the best restaurants I've ever been to in Philadelphia.

As a person from the south (NC), I am quite critical of eateries proclaiming to serve southern quisine, but dish out mediocre resemblances. As for Ms. Tootsie's food, I would have to fly my mama up to NY to slap her! Everything was good, except for the canned biscuits that arrived after our leftovers were in a take home container. I was also disappointed that on a cold day in November I had to sit in my car to wait for a table. Do make reservations. The service had much to be desired. It was slow and full of excuses as to why we had to wait so long for something simple as a piece of bread. The sweet tea...And the take home water bottle full of my mama's stolen sweet tea? Ingenious!

Ms. Tootsies is a place I'll definitely return to with friends. The food was great! Unbelieveably good, especially the Iced Tea...get the large and you'll be refilled constantly and have a full sports cup to leave with. You may want to split an entree so that you have room to try dessert.

The atmosphere was classy but not pretentious. Definitely a good place to take a date to show how low-key, down to earth and real you are.

Love the bathroom, nicely decorated and very clean. Most likely the best public bathroom on that side of South Street.

I fell in love with this restaurant. The food was fresh. I never experienced collard greens that seem to melt in your mouth. This is no greasy spoon soul food spot. The Ambience is mellow(almost romantic) It's very small so make a reservation. You won't be disapointed. Also buy the $5 Ice tea(non alcoholic). It's worth it trust me.
