I remember going to the zoo as a kid and seeing one animal exhibit after another, loaded with each species...These days, you're lucky if you get to see one animal of each. The zoo is a disappointment to my family and many other families who live in L.A. We purchased a family membership to be able to enjoy the zoo at any time. We should have saved that money and made the trip down to San Diego! And the bees at the L.A. Zoo only add misery to the disappointment. There are swarms of bees everywhere and they cling to your body, clothes and food. I hate to say this but the zoo needs a major overhaul before those animals die of boredom. There's no real excitement there anymore. Only if a bee gets in you hair or shirt...

All zoos are an abomination and should be closed permanently. We capture animals, imprison them in unnatural settings, and then pretend to our children that this is good and the animals must like it since they're safe and well fed. How would you like to live that way? Would you put your pet in a zoo? Would you put your child in a zoo? Why animals?

The LA zoo should really be shut down until it can be re-done in such a manner that it would not be abusive to the animals forced to exist there.

1. The enclosures are shamefully small and inadequate.

2. The bee/yellow jacket problem is out of control - if you suffer from bee sting allergies, avoid this place EVEN if you have an Epi-Pen.

3. The signs that are posted to help you find your way are a joke. If you actually follow signs to leave from that back of the zoo, they WILL lead you in circles.

4. Zoo employees are less than helpful if you need anything.....heaven forbid you need medical assistance while in the park, you might not find a staff member for a long time.

5. Over-priced food/drink BUT isn't that the way it is at ALL theme parks?

6. More walking with less pay-off than to be expected. I have been to many other zoos and they all require a bit of walking BUT with the LA Zoo, you get far fewer animal attractions for the amount of walking you must do. A simpler layout could have been designed to give you the same amount of attractions with less hiking. You should not have to walk for long periods of time with nothing to see as you do at the LA Zoo.

7. This is NOT a stroller friendly place....attractions that have stairs do not warn of this until you are too far in-then it is too much of a pain to back out and try to get in again.

8. Blazingly hot. This is NOT the kind of place you should go in the summer-time. With the amount of asphalt and walking you are required to do there, there should be agro-netting installed over walkways to reduce the heat. OR there should be water/drinking fountains available, if not, a water-misting system would quickly take the temperature down 10-20 degrees and keep visitors and even more importantly, the animals cooler and healthier.

The only real positive things I can say about the LA Zoo is that it is really easy to find from any freeway and there is plenty of parking.

Other than that, I truly believe that all the animals should be moved out and the entire installation should be leveled and re-built properly. Right now, the LA Zoo is one of Los Angeles' biggest embarassments on several levels.

Save your money and splurge on a trip to San Diego's Wild Animal Park and their Zoo.

My wife and I had a great time at this zoo with our 3 year old nephew and his parents. The grounds are very spaced out so be sure to plan on walking a bit. Admission was super CHEAP and definitely made the day even better. Once inside, the concessions are overpriced (like every other tourist attraction). There was a good variety of animals and we especially enjoyed the chimp habitat and gorilla compound.

I hadn't been in eight years, previous to that it had been in the early 90's. Whoever wrote previous reviews are rediculous. The truth is....it's filthy..All of the animals are in the exact SAME HABITATS! Even the "snow leopard" is in 90 degree heat. There are plenty of money making souvenier shops. It was dangerous, there were swarms of bee's everywhere there was a trash can. I felt terrible for all the animals, it's a true disaster and a poor representation of LOS ANGELES and of the animals TRUE HABITAT. SHAME ON LOS ANGELES!!!!!! YOU SHOULD CLEAN IT UP!!!!!!!! All animal activists should unite and make a huge impact on bettering the lives of these animals.....i felt as if i lived in a third world country.

I don't normally frequent zoos, but one of my hobbies is photography and there aren't many places in Los Angeles where you can get close up pictures of a Meerkat family. So, every few months my husband and I trek to the LA Zoo to see what's new. They recently put some tiger cups on exhibit...and I'd love some pictures of that. The only think I tire of at the zoo really is the walking and lugging the camera equipment all over...but then again...that's my choice. We don't usually take advantage of the tram...but we just might the next time. I recommend a visit to the LA Zoo...if you haven't been in many years, it's probably time to take another look. The zoo has come a long way in the last 20 years.

I remember the one time I went, it was in blazing hot weather and I recall having to walk A LOT. The place was a lot larger than I expected, because we didn?t even have time to see everything. The elephants and monkeys were my favorite. Though I have to say most of the animals looked pretty miserable in the blistering heat. I still like San Diego Zoo better by far~

I took my 18 month old to the zoo. We had a great time. She loved running around the open areas just as much as seeing the animals. There is alot of construction now so getting around is tough. Following the maps is not as easy as it would seem. We did a lot of walking and still didn't have time to see everything. I would definately go back after construction is complete.

Maybe I am spoiled, but compared to most zoos I have been to, this zoo was below average. I was surprised that it was still somewhat pricey ($9 for admission) and the line was somewhat long to get in on a weekend. When I went, many of the animals were not on display. For a much better experience, it's worth driving down to the San Diego Zoo.

It was with extreme delight when my family visited the Los Angeles Zoo with more than 1200 mammals, birds and reptiles from all over the globe. I highly recommend the place for the kids expecially the cave tours and the pet animal corner wherein you get the chance to hold the animals. The place was so huge you wont be able to see all the attractions in one day. My only reservation is the train which bring people to other destinations they should have given this for free.

My kiddos love the zoo. This is the second year we;ve had a memberhsip. What we like most is that we can just go for an hopur or just see the sea lions and its ok. They also have a wide variety of neat programs and such. The reindeer romp program they have for members is alot of fun. I find Boo at the Zoo wayyy to crowded for my tastes. The new sea lion cliff and entrance is nice too.

The LA Zoo has been making improvements over the years, but in my opinion it still doesnt compare to the variety of animals that Santa Barbara Zoo has or the beauty that Santa Barbara has. Prices seem to rise often as well, so unless you have some kind of coupon or membership, it can be a dissapointment.

The LA Zoo is a great place for the kids! With a brand new playground, this zoo is kicking it up a notch! Although there is still construction, the exhibits are great! Make sure you bring a mister in the summer, it gets really hot. Also, get a pass, you save so much!

I was probably impressed with the LA zoo because I was expecting it to be really lame. But it's really cute. They had way more animals than I thought. They're under a lot of construction and changes right now, so I'm guessing it's going to be great when they're done. Definitely a fun afternoon and a nice change of pace.

This is an affordable place to take your children and have a picnic. There are many programs for the young and I am glad there are educational places to visit. Buy a season pass and you can go for a few hours at a time getting your money's worth.

As zoos go, the Los Angeles zoo isn't anything to write home about. You have to walk half a mile uphill before you see an animal (a mile if you want to see a mammal).

There are, however signs of improvement. While it doesn't do much for the current visitors, about half of the zoo is under construction. The newly refurbished entrance is a great improvement and hopefully a sign of greater things to come.

On the positive side, they have a variety of family friendly programming. There are usually lots of programs & animal encounters on the weekends. Their memberships are relatively inexpensive.

My family has been members at the LA Zoo for two years now. Despite the renovations that sometimes mean missing exhibits, we all have a marvelous time. Being a member means we don't feel like we need to stay a certain amount of time in order to get our money's worth. We also take enjoy the special events that occur seasonally, like Santa and the Easter Bunny. And the on-going events like "Imagination Theater" -- an acted out story that kids come up on stage and perform. And out 2 year old won't leave till we've visited the petting zoo. Each zoo visit is a great day.

PROS: You can pack your own lunch!
CONS: Expensive restaurants, renovations can mean closed exhibits

I' ve just been there recently. I'd call it as a nice hang out for children. There're some disappointments though: place is very dirty and prices the the caffes are overpriced, moreover food is just very bad. So keep that in mind if you decide to go there.

This zoo when I visited was in a state of chaos. There is extensive construction and various detours that make navigating the grounds very confusing and frustrating. Everyone at thezoo seemed lost at one point or another. I tried very hard but was still unable to locate all of the animals. A lot of the animals were not even in their cages and their seemed to be a lot of exhibits closed. Not a very good zoo experience. Hopefully when the construction is complete they will focus on the overall zoo experience and make some much needed improvements. For now I would advise going to San Diego or elsewhere for your zoo experience.

The LA Zoo is a disapointment. They charge too much, there are too few animals, and it is incredibly offensive that you have to walk a gauntlet of stores and vendors of crap just to get into the place. Then, at almost every turn, there are vendors selling even more crap -- horribly food for kids and t-shirts and stuffed animals.

I guess that I have been spoiled by other, better, less commercial zoos, but for such a large city, LA deserves much better in a zoo.

We got an annual pass to the zoo. It's a really good deal, especially if you're a AAA member.
The zoo is a little messy and confusing right now because they're in the middle of remodeling. It's gong to be even better when they're done. There's a new entrance coming soon if not already open, a new pachyderm habitat and primate area coming in the near future.
When you go, plan to spend at least 3 hours. Walking up and down the hills is a great workout too. They have classes for children and members as well as special events for Halloween, Christmas, and other holidays.

My toddler (of course) loves the zoo. It's one of his favorite places. The LA Zoo has worked really had in the past few years to update their animal houses and areas. The children's area is quite nice now, with lots of unique animals that are easy to see. The zookeepers feed the seal about 10:30 every morning and that's fun to watch.

Their petting zoo area isn't the best. They only have sheep and goats and most of them stay behind the ropes away from the kids. They are tame enough, but like to stay in the shade. I've been to other petting areas with more diverse animals, but maybe that's too hard for such a large zoo.

They are undergoing lots of contruction so some animals are at other zoos and there are a lot of paths that are closed off. It makes it hard to get around but it will sure be wonderful when it's all done.

It is located in the heart of Griffith Park. In the summertime they have extra activities that are wonderful. One night a week they have live concerts, you bring your dinner and enjoy the music. In the day time, I don't know how many days per week, they have special shows in the rotunda area for kids. They are fun and educational and FREE..... One thing though, if you are alllergic to Bees it is a Bee Habitat and they have lots and lots and lots of bees..... There is a very good selection of animals, even the baby animals you can see in the nursery. It makes for a fun inexpensive day with the kids.

i haven't been to this zoo in ahwile but from what i can remember it was small but still enjoyable. My favortie part is always the monkeys and the runner up would be the birds. Stay away from the gift shop though-the prices are just silly. And if you go on a hot day bring alot of water and comfy clothes. Its a fun and educational day and i cant wait to go back. I hear that alot of changes and exhibits have gone on since so im looking foward to it.See you soon!

Save the eight dollars and drive to the San Diego zoo instead. The entire zoo is painted UPS brown. The animal enclosures are huge concrete behemoths that neither enhance the view, nor recreate the animals natural environment.

I've lived in the Los Angeles area for years now, but I never visited the zoo until my sister came to visit. We made a half day out of it, and we had a blast. We saw the new house exhibits, and we took our time walking around the zoo. We ate at the cafe that was located near the entrance to re-energize ourselves for a few more hours of fun.

Before recently, I hadn't been to the Zoo in over 10 years and I didn't have much desire to back. My memories were of a foul-smelling place, animals that seemed miserable in 100-degree plus heat, where the only refuge for humans was in the dark, cool environs of the Koala House. Not so anymore. They've really cleaned this place up. A lot of the animals have larger cages, there's considerably more shade and lush vegetation, and best of all, it doesn't smell bad anymore. Parking is still free. It's really become a nice place to spend a couple hours. Wear comfortable shoes no matter how long you plan to be there. Forgo the gift shops for souveniers and get all retro zoo kitch with the hot wax animal machines, which will dispense one of 14 different animals for a mere $2.

I have always loved the zoo. I enjoy this zoo everytime I go. To avoid the crowds, go during the week. The Kola house is very cute.

This is only the second zoo I've ever been to so I don't have anything to compare the LA Zoo too. I was there on Memorial Day weekend with my niece and we had an enjoyable afternoon. I thought it was great that most of the zoo was shaded with trees. The price is right to get in. I think you could take your kids and have a great afternoon.

Yes, there are better zoos. Even though L.A.'s is a bit worn around the edges, it's still a great walk among shade and flower with a few habitats that are innovatively designed. Actually a much longer day than you might suspect--watch out for the unblinking heat of late summer. As always, the monkeys are my favorite.

A trip to the L.A. zoo is an incredible experience not only for the animals (which are super cute, especially the elephants and the sea lions), but for people-watching, as well. It's one of the few places in the city where everyone, no matter what color or religion or socioeconomic class, acts pretty much the same. Dads hold their little girls on their shoulders and say things like, "Look at the monkey!" And the little boys yell, "Mommy, he's biting the head off that mouse!" And everyone gets those sippy cups in the shape of the Hawaiian Punch guy ... you will leave here being completely happy, and maybe even have a little faith in humanity. That's worth $7.

The best time to catch the animals in action is right when the zoo opens. Before noon, the animals are out and about, and it's not too hot--even in the summer.

One of the best zoos in the country with a ton of kid sites, activities, and learning. Over 133 acres set in a natural property with room for animals to roam. Kids under 2 are free.

The LA Zoo is a great place to visit and see animals that most people will never see in their entire life. It's one of the few places you can still visit without having to spend a fortune, e.g. San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Disneyland, etc.

This zoo has just about every animal imagineable. What fun! My kid loves this place. We have fun walking around and reading the posts that state fun facts about each animal. We love getting the animal shaped chicken and fries for lunch.

my favorite part of this zoo is the two headed rattlesnake. I hate snakes, but have decided that this snake is the coolest ever. It doesn't compare to the San Diego zoo, but its still a nice place to go for the day. Its better to go

A zoo membership is an amazing thing to have. It means you can go just to look at the sea lions, or only for an hour and it's still worth your while. The zoo is quite large, so if you have small children, they may tire before you see it

Okay first of all, this isn't the San Diego Zoo, so let's get that out of the way. This may not be the greatest zoo, but if you live in Los Angeles and just want a cheap afternoon of looking at some animals then this is the place to go.
