When you grow tired of the same old orchids at the big box stores and supermarkets, you will want to check out what Golden gate Orchids has to offer. These are not mass produced plants from Taiwan, Florida or (if you are lucky) Salinas. Nor are they the same varieties you will see in every outlet. These are locally grown, and often locally hybridized Orchids grown with love by a native son Tom Perlite, who has won many local, national and international awards for his skill as a grower and hybridizer. Although his nursery is usually wholesale only, his plants are carried by Sloat Garden Centers, Plant'it Earth, and other local retailers. He also sets up shop at various local shows. Most notably the Pacific Orchid Exposition at Fort Mason, and the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show in San Mateo.

When Tom sets up shop at these events he often has his family there with him giving sales help and making sure people know what they are buying and how to take care of it. Although he doesn't sell cymbidiums, which so many people grow here, he sells many other genera of cool and cold growing orchids that will thrive in the Bay Area. These are not going to be cheap plants like the stuff at the big boxes. But they are going to gorgeous, unusual, and healthy and you will get good, clear advice on how to grow them. And they are reasonably priced for what they are. He is a good source for Masdevallias, Odont. hybrids, Coelogynes, Australian Dendrobium hybrids that grow outdoors here, and some stuff you will never have seen before.

These days when the nursery business is looking more and more like corporate farming, it is great to have an artisan grower right here in town.

This is one of my favorite sources for incredible orchid acquisitions. Golden Gate Orchids has one of the world??s most exquisitely refined and highly awarded collections of cool growing orchid species and intergeneric hybrids with special emphasis on the Oncidium alliance. Golden Gate Orchid??s exceptional breeding of Odontoglossum hybrids is second-to-none, having garnered tens if not hundreds of awards and much attention and praise from even the most discriminating American Orchid Society Judges. I??ve enjoyed collecting a variety of Golden Gate??s line of Masdevallia and Odontoglossum species and hybrids, which tend to do very well growing a bit protected in the cool mild frost to frost free areas that typify the San Francisco Bay Area??s climate. You need not worry about being stuck on collecting only cool growers as Golden Gate Orchids, they have an extensive collection of award winning, warm to intermediate growing species and hybrids that are excellent choices for indoor culture from easy-to-grow Paphiopedilums (slipper orchids) and Dendrobiums to rarer exotics like the sequential blooming Pyschopsis hybrids. I??ve spends hundreds of dollars collecting Golden Gate??s line up of Masdevallia species and hybrids, Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, Paphiopedilum species and other hard to find species. Without exception each purchased plant has been grown to perfection with blemish free leaves, healthy (disease free), lush, robust growth and in many cases in spike with vibrant large awarded or potentially award quality blooms. Do not miss the opportunity to add exceptional plants to your existing collection by visiting Golden Gate Orchids during this year??s Pacific Orchid Exposition in February. I always look forward to my next purchase from Golden Gate Orchid??s newest line of top caliber breeding. The service and attention you receive will be as exceptional as the plants!
