Our daughter has been enjoying swimming lessons at Makiswim since she was 6 months old. She started when she was an infant in the Little Fish classes. She's 7 years old now and has developed a love for the deep end of the pool. The staff at Makiswim are just great, friendly folks with a highly refined teaching methodology and a complete appreciation for making learning to swim fun for everyone. We continue to send our daughter to classes to refine her skills and for the fun of it. Thanks Makiswim!

Both of our girls have been taking lessons weekly at Maki Swim School since they were 18 months old. That means our family has been attending lessons at Maki for 3.5 years. Now our girls, age 3 and 4, swim independently (always supervised) in our backyard pool. Our 3 year old is learning proper free-style form - getting arms, legs and side breathing to all come together at the same time. Our 4 year old is learning back stroke, butterfly, breast stroke and flip turns. She challenged me to a 7 lap race last week - and she won! Maki Swim School is a great place for kids and adults to learn to swim. The teachers are trained professionals in both swim and child development. The school offers private, semi-private and group lessons. All swimmers get lots of individual attention from instructors. It's OK to come and watch a few times before you begin lessons. Check it out! Swimmers learn at their own pace. Over the years I've seen many kids come to Maki not wanting to get in the water. I've seen nervous parents too. A few months later the kids are swimming and having great fun. Here is why kids need swim lessons: Last year I watched my two year old reach into our backyard pool for a toy. I knew what would happen next. She fell in fully dressed. She promptly turned, padded to the wall and put her hands on the edge of the pool. Using her hands she moved to the steps and got out. I let this happen as a learning experience. I could have stopped her from reaching for the toy, but didn't. She was never in danger - just cold and surprised. With regular swim lessons a small child can be water safe. I highly recommend Maki Swim School.

Maki Swim School is a great place for little ones to first get acquainted with the water. My son started when he was 6 months old and loved it from the first lesson. Small class size, constant skill review through songs together with a warm & skilled instructor make the program successful. We love the flexibility with absences (one make up) in that a doctor's note isn't required unlike some other swim schools that are very strict about that. I would recommend this school in a heartbeat!

Maki is the best swim school around. Instructors are friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and great at keeping the kids focused and safe. They are flexible when it comes to scheduling new lessons or make up lessons which (i think) is important when you have multiple kids in multiple activities. I would recommend Maki to anyone who is looking for a swim school that knows what they are doing!!

I've been to other well known swim lessons and my children always did well but when I went to Maki they both made tremendous improvements with one or two lessons. I was also impressed with Maki's focus on the children being safe in the pool. I live in South San Jose and travel to Maki because I feel it worth it.

My son (about 2 & 1/2 at the time) and I enrolled in about 20 weeks worth of "big fish, little fish" (child and parent in the pool) swim classes at Maki. The overall experience was highly enjoyable for both me and my son and I would recommend Maki to anyone with a toddler interested in some year-round water fun.

The facilities themselves are nothing spectacular, but don't detract from the fun or learning. The pool, which is indoor and heated, is on the small side, but plenty big for five or six toddlers, their parents, and an instructor.

My son had 2 different instructors during our 20 weeks, and both were very friendly, patient, and fun. The instruction varies by age group and capability, but the 2-year-olds class focuses on having fun, getting comfortable in the water, developing some basic pre-swimming skills (e.g. floating, "scoopy" arms, drafting), and basic safety (e.g. using the safety pole, climbing out of the pool).

Classes are only a half hour, but with a pre swim rinse off in the shower, a post swim shower, and getting both you and your toddler dried off and dressed, the whole experience usually took us a full hour.

It's worth noting that the pool is actually located at:

1249 Kentwood Ave.
San Jose, CA 95129
In the DeAnza/85 Shopping Center

This is by far the best swim school in the Bay Area. The instructors are very patient with all the children. They explain to the parents why and how certain arm movements, etc. are done. They have cute rhymes for the children to learn which also teach them movements in the water and how to get out of the water. The prices are very competitive. I have recommended Maki to a lot of friends.
