My husband and I frequent Il Sole, but in my opinion not enough! This is 1 of our favorite spots and they NEVER let us down. The food is superb, the Veal, the spaghetti and meatballs, the chicken, the risotto with mushrooms, the salads with so much flavor that gives "salads" a whole new meaning, and so many more great dishes. Il Sole is truly a dining experience and is worth every penny. We love getting dressed up {but it's not a stuffy conservative place, it's very sexy and chill} and always run into a celebrity or 2 {dining there}. On Valentines Day, every table was a celebrity table, so very COOL and everyone is simply enjoying their spectacular dining experience!

Pros: The Food, The Wine List, Service, Ambience, Location

Cons: We don't go there enough!

The problem with Il Sole is it aspires to be something it is not - a 4 or 5 star place. But that would require atmosphere (this place is kind of a dump), service (erratic at best) and management (people were left waiting, we were surprised by a $61 charge on the check for one of the specials, the restaurant couldn't help us with the valet). In short, this place probably won't be around in the long term, because it doesn't deserve to be. Skip it.

How's this for a they-couldn't-care-less story?

We arrived early and -- miracle of miracles! -- nabbed a curbside parking place. And hour into our meal, I asked the hostess for change, to top-off the meter, and was told (I kid you not!), "Oh, we don't have coins." As clarification, she added, "We round everything off to the nearest dollar, so we don't have to deal with coins."

(I considered rounding the tip off to the nearest hundred dollars -- but elected to expose their arrogance instead.)

So, is IL SOLE self-absorbed, precious, or just plain irritating? I'l leave that "call" to you.

A complete waste of time. Waited over an hour for our stated reservation time while "celebrities" who told the management they had "just shown up" were whisked ahead of us. Our party of four was seated next to the restroom without apology for the wait. Given the hoopla, I expected the food to be stellar, or at least the service. Not so much. The only thing exceptional about this highly overrated eatery is the bill. Well, at least the valet was nice. Why does this place survive while Orso's struggles? I don't get it.

Went here for my anniversary and it was delish. It's right on Sunset and valet parking is right in the front. Waiter was very friendly, read some other reviews that they tend to rush you but that wasn't our case. We aren't celebs and they treated us great. Got a window seat so got to see all the action going on on the strip. Great time.

This restaurant has become so popular, I had been anxious to try it, even though the reviews on this website were, well, mixed. So all I can say after eating there Friday night is that the negative reviews must have been written by the competition. I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to do so after we left. I grew up in L.A., and have been taking clients out to eat in this area now for the last 20 years. I have had my share of good and bad food, but nothing ruins or enhances a meal like the service. With that said, the hostess was friendly and completely attitude free even though we were 30 minutes late for our reservation. Our waiter, Michael, was attentive without hovering, lovely to our five year old, who by the way, was treated to a bowl of penne pasta and a cookie plate on the house. Most importanly, the appetizer plate, main course ( I had the NY Strip steak with arugula and roasted potatoes and my husband had penne with Vodka tomato cream sauce that was to die for!) and dessert (choc ganache) were all delicious, as was my glass of Cab (sorry, forgot which one). I could not have enjoyed it more. We no longer live in the neighborhood, but when we are on this side of town, we will make a special point to visit Il Sole!

Okay so I strolled in with a co-worker on expenses and would have walked out if not for the embarrassment of it all. The prices were really high. Soup for $14 bucks, low end wine by the glass $18. Pasta's in the upper $20's. I had the Fagioli and the homemade Ravioli. The Fagioli was good but not great, certainly over-priced. The Ravioli however was very good. My buddy had the Lasagna and said it was awesome. It depends on what you're looking for but I would recommend this restaurant if you don't mind the prices and would like to people watch and yes, have your picture taken by the Paparazzi as you leave.

This restaurant gets 2 stars because they did have good wine & dessert . As far as the service and the food in general, no way. I LOVE eating in West Hollywood and I have to say that there are many places that have better food, service & ambiance for less and I don't care how many supposed celebrities eat here. For a bill that will get close to $300 for 2 people I expect the sauce that my pasta comes with NOT to taste like tomato paste from a can. This was atrocious. Of course my first indication that this place may not be up to par was when both tables on either side of me had returned their meals. When I let my waiter/wannabe actor know this, he gave me a look of "what the heck" and took off unapologetic. When he came back from the kitchen he had stated that both he and the chef tasted the pasta and nothing was wrong with it and that is how they make it. After hearing that, I knew I would NOT order something else since serving canned sauce is what they do. The service was insulting. Our waiter took our entree order and then ignored us. It was an ordeal to get him to stop by our table in order to tell him the entree was not up to par. Finally, at the end of the evening, I waited through 3 glasses of water before he gave us our bill. If I was at Denny's, I expect that sort of poor service. In regards to the ambiance, I don't particularly like yelling "huh, what?" to the person I am dining with who happens to be only 2 feet from my face. This place tends cram tables next to each other in order to seat more people which then makes them more money. And finally, for a self deluded hoity-toity place in We-Ho...their restROOM I guess what you would called "unisex". As a female, there's nothing like sitting down staring at (and smelling) a urinal. This place obviously makes money, they can at least afford to have separate restrooms. Absolutely not worth the final bill.

I know FOOD and WINE. This is one of the worst and overpriced places i have ever been. I was there last night with my boyfriend. Service is nice and ambience is really nice but the FOOD was horrible. And it's way too expensive. It is a place where a lot of celebrities come. I saw that guy from Twilight. He sat right next to us. He was nice and my boyfriend even talked to him. but besides celebs and ambience, it's really the worst restraunt.

Il Sole is fantastic! The lasagna is fantastic; melt in your mouth fantastic! My husband ordered it, and I eyed it the entire time. He offered me a few bites, not enough. Yum! I had the special pumpkin raviolis which were delicious also. I started with a salad that seemed to be missing the dressing. The waiter was really personable and had great recommendations. We asked him about the wine, and he gave us an explanation that made my mouth water, and it was reasonably priced at only $60! We came back a few weeks later, had the same waiter. This time, I ordered the lasagna, and my husband had the veal. The tomato soup was mouth watering, and I dipped their yummy bread in it. Our waiter even brought us $10 for the valet, as we had no cash, and we added the $10 to his tip. This place ranks up there with Angelini Osteria! Delicious!

Known for its celebrity clientele, Il Sole is so much more. They make some seriously good Italian food. It is located on busy Sunset Blvd, but valet parking helps make the location more manageable. Not for the faint of wallet. Try the penne alla vodka. It is out of this world.

We requested to be seated outside when we made the reservation and were delighted to find that they did in fact save us a table on the patio. The tables are VERY close together, but its actually quite cozy. The food was delicious and the service was great. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 STARS is that the portions are on the smaller side considering how much they meals cost. I ordered the ravioli de carne that was very good, but definitiely not much of it. We finished the night with a chocolate cake that was absolutely divine. Overall, I'd definitely recommend, but bring the credit card!

Upon entering Il Sole for the first time, I have to say I was a little nervous... would the service be snooty and the food mediocre and over-priced? But I am glad to say my experience was amazing, the service was very efficient and the waiters and hostesses were easygoing and fun, they happily went along with my dad's jokes and even gave us directions to pinkberry. Having been to Italy twice, I have to say the food was very authentic, fresh, and delicious. though a tad over-priced. I recommend the lasagna and the tomato soup. The interior is very cozy and romantic, with a rustic feel. Also, we did see a celebrity; it's a great place to people watch. Overall my experience was excellent and I would definitely go back!

Il Sole consistently has the best Italian food in the city. The pastas are incredible and the veal milanese is better than Ago's. The only downsides to the restaurant is that it tends to be a little too expensive for what you get and the paparazzi can get annoying if there is a celeb there. Otherwise it is great food and decent service.

I am a foodie, I luv eating out and enjoy very much trying "BUZZ Bistros". I made reservations for dinner (4 guests) a couple of days ago and requested for patio dining. The request was confirmed via email and also I personally confirmed the reservation by phone last night and was not given any warning of what i was going to hear on the day of the event We arrived at Il Sole today at 615pm to celebrate my husbands birthday and to my DISAPPOINTMENT, I was told that we can only eat at the confirmed patio reservation for 1 hour and 15 minutes!!!!!! how can one enjoy a birthday celebration with appetizers, drinks, main course, dessert and coffee in an hour and 15 minutes????? It was a complete waste of time! they should include in their website or when they confirm requests that you are only allowed to have the table for an hour and 15 minutes. IL RUSH????? we went to AGO's instead and had a wonderful time. Spent $350.00 at Ago's but well worth it.

Il Sole is great. My husband and I went there recently, recommended to us by a friend. The lobster ravioli was amazing. The artichoke salad, pretty good as well. We went early on a Sunday and had the place to ourselves. The service was good, the star sighting not so much, but we highly recommend the food. A little pricey ($150) for two without drinks but otherwise a great experience.

I'm always hearing/read ing about some former "Friends" star eating here, so I kinda wanted to know what all the hype was about. (This restaurant must pay the tabloids or something.) Anyway, we were seated fairly quickly (w/o a rez, even) and our server was very friendly, although slow. The risotto was quite good as was the homemade squash ravioli I ordered, but nothing really wowed my palate. The interior is cramped (they like to say it's "cozy") and the vibe was pretty festive -- there was a large group next to us. Bottom line -- it was nice for a visit, but for a $100+ bill for 2 entrees, a couple salads & some sparkling water --i'd rather go somewhere that's more substance than hype.

This was just a wonderful dinner on every level. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was nice without being stuffy and the food incredible. We went on a Friday at 5:45 without a reservation and were able to get in just fine.

Have fun! We did.

Went to IL Sole on a Saturday with a 6:30pm reservation. We were taken promptly to our table in the "wine room" section of the restaurant, right by the window. Atmosphere is very cozy. Wonderful food, and actually, not too expensive considering its fine dining (2 salads, 2 entrees, 2 desserts = $140 (tip included). Selection of dessert ice creams are fabulous - get the rum raisin. My hubby had a seafood linguine which was awesome - the best scallops ever. I had a lobster ravioli. It was good, but the portion was pretty small. I'm a small girl with a hardy appetite, and was still hungry afterward. I ate off my hubby's linguine and we were both totally full. The wine is a bit pricy - sometimes $20+ per glass. And many wines are sold by the bottle only. The hostests were extremely nice, helpful and polite. Extremely prompt service. Our food came quickly and was cooked perfectly. I'll definately come back again when in LA area. Highly recommended. And, if you want cocktails, "One Sunset" is right across the street. You might want to get valet. Since we had a 6:30pm reservation, we paid $6 to park in the lot next to the restaurant - but that fills quickly. Only complaint...music was a bit low in the dining area (which is very odd for LA, usually the music is blasting!)

Pros: Excellent food, wonderful staff, possible celeb sightings

Cons: None really...not a large dessert menu (but who eats dessert in LA)

Tonight I went to Il sole again, but this time very disappointed.
The food was decent, our waiter was good, but the night was spoiled from the very beginning due to the rude, snotty hostesses who think they are just too good.
No greeting, no manners, just walked us to the table and said she needed it back in an hour.
This ruined the entire meal. I have never been to any nice restaurant that would treat any customer like this. I have completely lost interest in going to this place ever again and would not recommend it.
It really is not as good as it used to be. Now it is all just hype, with people looking to spot a celebrity. So sad.

Everything about my night at Il Sole was top notch. From the attentive and knowledgeable waiter, the incredibly tasty food and the surprise anniversary dessert, I will be back.

Was some of the best Italian in town..and my family knows Italian cuisine....but the food is definitely slipping.. and has been over the last year....still has nice wines or bring your own bottle.. most likely will have celeb sighting.. cozy atmosphere but do not sit on the patio unless you smoke..gets very hazy out there. No where to wait/bar and pricey too.

On a recent trip to LA, I had the opportunity to dine at IL SOLE with my wife and two of my children. We each ordered different dishes, and they were all wonderful. I had a pasta dish, and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. It was absolutely delicious. The restaurant was on the expensive side, but well worth the cost. Our only negative comment was that our particular waiter seemed arrogant and disinterested. Perhaps he was more interested in serving the movers and shakers that frequent the restaurant. However, the food couldn't have been tastier.

I cannot comment on how it ranks amongst other LA trattorias since it's the only Italian restaurant we dined at in LA, but I have eaten at many in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Manhattan. IL SOLE ranks up there with the best of the best in any of those cities. As your California governator says.........I'll be back!!!

After reading nothing but great reviews on City Search I made a reservation for 4 at 9 p.m. on a Thursday night for my girlfriends birthday. We arrived & had to wait almost 20 minutes in a tiny packed place with nowhere to wait. There we stood in front of the 2 gals that were working the front desk... Bus boys were everywhere with dirty plates walking by us into the kitchen. (It was okay they were doing their jobs although just a bit annoying that here we were waiting for our table amongst all of this) As we were feeling like we should go somewhere else we got sat. Our table wobbled so the waiter said he would take care of it. He never did so we kindly asked the very helpful bus boy and he handled it right away. The food was tasty. I believe for the size of the location and service it was very expensive. I don't mind paying for good service, food & location although just a bit disappointed after hearing so much about Il Sole. I did love the Tiramisu and the 2 Bottles of Pino Grigio that we selected. I had to send back my Vodka Penne Pasta because the noodles were so hard that it just did not taste very good. The three other plates were fantastic! While waiting for them to cook my pasta a bit more the birthday girl said " Come on have some of my Lasagna" and I did have a couple of bites and it was great!" So I have mixed feelings about Il Sole. I would maybe go back but most likely not.

Moved from NYC ...notoriously known for its amazing Italian restaurants ?I can safely say that Il Sole is on par with the best of NYC. I?ve been to many LA Italian restaurants and Il Sole is in a league of its own (cliche, but true). A small and quaint location that is fitting for romantic dinner for two, but also has the capacity for a large group of ten (inside). The food is amazing and the wine list is extraordinary. Bottom line: fail safe restaurant pick.

BTW - Ringo Star was dining there as well ...added bonus.

OMG -- an absolute home run! 6 of us on a Saturday night...it was crowded, interesting people, good vibe. They sat us right away, flirted with the hostess,...but best of all....3 of us had the Sea Bass and it sent us to culinary heaven. It was the best ever...and we loved ALL the dishes including the Salmon, salads, risotto, etc. We all joked that Sea Bass will never be this good again. Bravo!

Pros: great vibe with hip smart crowd (not the trendy trashy types) and AWESOME FOOD

Cons: sorry, but can't think of anything, it was one of those perfect restaurant experiences.

My family and I back east eat at this one really nice restaurant , Chez Noel, back east and I always order the dover sole. When I went to El Sole, I saw the offered a dover sole as well, but I didn't think anything could top Chez Noel. But it did. It's DELICIOUS. Right before it's served, the waiter debones it and serves it to you. Aside from the dover sole, I had a beet salad that was also quite good. The service was great. A very romantic place. Although expensive, it's backed up with good tasting food.

I don't particularly like Italian for fine dining / special occasions, but having heard so much about Il Sole from celebrity articles, I decided to give it a go last week, to celebrate my hubby's birthday. Even on a Tuesday, the restaurant was full for the 8 pm reservation. We opted to be seated in the smaller room (I think it was the wine cellar?), since it was more intimate and private than the main dining room. The hot tables seem to be the ones on the patio, though, as patrons do a lot of people-watching. There were probably some celebritites, since the paparazzi kept clicking away, but we didn't see who they were. I heard the menu has changed since new ownership took over (they say the previous menu was better), but if you don't find what you want on the menu, the staff and the chef are very accommodating. Since I don't eat red meat (and there was a lot of that), and only saw 3 fish entrees on the menu, I asked if it was possible to have some scampi cooked and the chef was gracious enough to come out and ask me how I'd like it done. Freindly staff and crowd (even befriended the girls at the table next to us). 1 appetizer, 2 glasses of wine, 2 entrees, 1 dessert & 2 cups coffee w/ tax and tip for $200. Possible to find street parking but it's West Hollywood, so invest in the $6 valet.

Everything from start to finish was excellent. We walked in and there was a great ambiance going. The food was incredible. I started the meal with a salad of blue cheese, carmelized pecans and mixed greens. Then I had the dover sole which they descaled right in front of me and then served. My friend had the penne ala vodka with bits of prosciutto evenly dispersed throughout the pasta. Then for dessert we had the chocolate pecan tart. Words cannot explain how delicious and divine this meal was. By far the best meal I have had in a long time. The service was truly impeccable as well. You must go to this restaurant at least once. Pricey but well worth it. You'll remember the meal more than the dollar.

Il Sole is a little gem on the strip. It delivers excellent Italian food with what could be the best Italian wine list in LA (you'll pay for it though). Service is generally excellent. A lot of celebs and industry powers eat here because the lack of flashiness tends not to attract unwanted attention. But like the Ivy and other power-spots, Il Sole is VERY expensive. The clientle can afford it, but Il Sole would never be mistaken as a value.

A super Italian restaraunt that is relatively unknown. Seems to attract more European crowd. Always has nice selection of house Italian wines.

Don't let the Sunset location fool you - this is a great restaurant. The wine list is extensive, and the food is top-notch.
I recommend you make reservations for the Wine Room, which is cozier and quieter than the boisterous main room.
