Westside has 2 new teachers this year, and after a week of classes, I already like my 3-year-old daughter's teacher, Sandy. I think of parent participation as "using my skills to make the school as fabulous as possible for my daughter". Because the parents do most of the work, it's about half as expensive as the least expensive full-service. This year, we have a great group of parents pitching in! The play-based curriculum means kids enjoy their classes. I believe at this age, it??s more important for kids to learn social skills than numbers and letters. If you want a preschool teacher to introduce these subjects to your child, you might be happier elsewhere. One review mentioned that a teacher had trouble controlling the children. This is a problem everywhere, since teachers in California are extremely limited in what kind of discipline they can mete out, but I have observed teachers at Westside skillfully resolving issues as they arise.

My son went here after starting at another Co-Op where the conditions were filthy, the parents cliquey, there was 5 minutes of "circle time" at the start/end where no theme or idea was presented and the teacher was like a big kid herself. Westside was so opposite our previous experience. The teacher was wonderful, the play yard and classroom clean, the parents welcoming and the "circle time" 30 minutes at the start and end with a weekly theme for reading/art/play. The children in the 3 year class were not violent, mean or out of control like we had seen other places. We LOVE it.

My Son Reid started Westside about a year and a half ago. He had been in a "great" traditional drop-off preschool up to that point, but I could see that he was very unhappy, unheard and picked on. Westside has changed all of our lives. Reid immediately became inspired and happy to learn where "constructive play" and "conflict resolution" led the way for him to do what's natural for all children - play, learn and grow in a safe, secure, environment. Teacher Mandy was amazing the way she was able to bring together 15 boys(!) and 4 girls to accomplish big kindergarten goals. The children didn't even know they were learning, they were just busy having so much fun with all the great projects!! Teacher Mandy is well educated, tender, solid, creative and her unwavering faith, commitment and connection to every child helped them to believe in themselves. Reid has a wonderful relationship with school now, not to mention he is writing, doing math and communicates so willingly with his friends and family. His confidence alone, brings tears to my eyes. I am endlessly thankful to Westside for their commitment to community and for allowing parents to be apart of it. What an honor.
xoxoPenny

I sent my kids to this school and I really loved it. The teachers are great. The parents have become great friends of mine. I loved the monthly parent learnings we did. I would strongly recommend this school to other parents. I think it does prepare kids well for kindergarten.

Hello Community,
I wanted to take a moment to share my experience at Westside Parent Participation Preschool. My son has been attending for two years. When he first arrived he was two years old, very active and had trouble communicating his feelings, disliked art and other activities. The environment is so loving, non-threatening, caring, respectful and safe that he began to blossom in so many areas. Being in this school the teachers and parents have helped him to grow so much. He is four now, has learned how to express his feelings towards others, instead of reacting, will share with others, truly cares about others and has grown to love art, science and learning. The teachers are so loving and really care about your child(ren). I can leave on my non-work day, feel relaxed and not be concerned about the safety of my child. Being at a Parent Participation Preschool, I love being able to watch my child interact with other children so I am aware of his strengths and weaknesses. I also love how the other parents there can help me and my child grow and learn in such a positive community.
I think that one should realize that it is a working school, the lesson plans are well thought out, very creative, fun and educational. The environment helps build community and you are not alone in this stage of development for your child. We have parent education nights where the topics have helped me to grow and learn how to be a better parent.
I could go on and on about what a positive decision I made for having my son attend Westside Preschool. I sure do hope you tour Westside and see for yourself what a great school it is.
Sincerely, Karen Wheeler

My grandson was a student at Westside and I was horrified at what was called learning. The teacher for the pre K class has absolutely no skills needed to keep the children interested or even remotely under control. The school seems to be run by a clique of pompous, overbearing parents who seem to control all aspects of the environment. I cannot imagine any child coming out of Westside with the skills to start their elementary school education.

unfriendly teachers, no education going on, just playing, kids fighting, teacher unable to resolve kids conflicts. Lots of work for the parents and no education, your better off taking your kids to the park they'll probably learn more there.

Westside Parent Participation Preschool is accredited by the National Association of Education for Young Children (NAEYC). This is not your typical preschool as all parents must commit to working in the classroom providing support for the teachers. Teachers and parents provide a rich environment for children to learn through exploration and play. Parents are required to attend a monthly evening meeting to discuss news of the school and guest speakers are brought in to discuss everything from positive discipline to sibling rivalry.

After reading the negative review, I had to response and share my experience. Both of my children attended Westside at different points in time as they are almost five years apart in age. We all had a wonderful experience that I know has had a lasting impact. We found the teachers and other parents to be wonderfully supportive and encouraging. I loved the emphasize on social skills and positive discipline and have a hard time believing that the school as changed so much. Since moving to Austin, Texas, I have loss touch with the teachers and families. But if anyone considering this school would like another point of view to the one listed below, please email me at pam.nagar@yahoo.com. I would be happy to share our experiences.

This is a parent participation school. It means parents work as teacher's aid. Each week the parent has a different job which is good because the parents get to learn a lot when working alongside the children.

Ok, now here's what bugged me the most. The teacher there was not much interested in the learning of the children as much as she had her eyes on the parents to see if they were performing their job properly. She was totally unable to handle child conflicts. I am not sure if she has even heard the word " conflict resolution". I found her to be arrogant with a nocare attitude. I wouldn't recommend anybody to this school.
