I use to love this place. It seems like the food isn't as good anymore and, well, it is just so overpriced I get mad every time I go in. You can do much better elsewhere for the price.

first time ever, food was tasteless, beans seemed "watered down" steak fajitas were very tough, tacos were VERY greasy and the chili rellano was very bad!. *All their food is covered in "special sauces" no doubt to disguise the food. didn't make the food taste any better. 5 of us ate there on a Thursday evening and after about 3 bites we all agreed that the food was too bad and we left (did not even continue eating). This was a waste of our money and time. The waitress came to our table only once. Will never go back!! Mijares is better, even Acapulco (chain restaurant) is better than El Cholo.

I ate here once because I kept seeing the place as I drove to work. Well bad idea. The food didn't taste good at all but at first I thought it might just be me. My group agreed. The next day the toilet paper became my best friend.... thanks Cholo, you brought me and double quilted paper much much closer.

For my son's wedding we chose El Cholo for the Rehearsal Dinner. Our party was around 35 people. the setting was lovely. we had our own section. The staff prepared our guacamole at table side. It was delicious as were all the tasty and nicely prepared appetizers.I'd asked for a buffet style dinner so that everyone could get what they wanted including the vegetarians. Every entree was very well prepared. the drinks were also delicious.Thank you to the wonderful chef and staff. this was a very special time for all of us.Mother of the GroomMary Taylor Hassouna

in my opinion the menu is too small. I had fajits & yes they were very good. My margarita was good & service was pretty good as well. Nothing special thou. They should have specials to widen the varities of food.

Friends don't let friends dine at El Cholo. Food leaves much to be desired. If you need/want comparison, think of the following -- Acapulco's has better food. Yes, sad, but true. I would only contemplate setting foot in El Cholo for Happy Hour. Drinks are good, and they get a decent group of people.

Whenever my family flies in they like to go to El Cholo. I highly recommend making reservations. The place is always crowded. The service was great and the food was good too. I'm surprised by the bad reviews, but I have never had a problem with slow service here. Overall the restaurant is very good.

El cholo has "okay" food. Ive had better and for the price you have to pay it could be a lot better. The restaraunt itself is beautiful and classy. You probably pay for the setting. Waiters are friendly, good for groups but it does take a while for them to bring the "ok" food.

Even on a Tuesday night it feels like a Saturday night at El Cholo. Be forewarned El Cholo's are independently owned and operated though all in the family. Fresh table-side guacamole was awesome! Taste of History Combination plate was more like a platter. Share the food. Portions are generous. Make reservations. Good for parties.

Cons: loud, crowded

.

My goodness. How can this be? An extremely popular restuarant for sure, but with food and service that's so awful you wonder why so many people are crowding into the lobby to wait for a table.

The worst thing is the salsa -- which ought to be a slam-dunk for any good Mexican restaurant. It tastes like a blander form of ketchup with a little cilantro mixed in. The service was terribly slow and embarassing. The waitress didn't seem in much of a hurry to tend to us. And when the food came out it was either overcooked or cold. One of the orders was completely incorrect (chicken enchiladas instead of steak) and the waitress took it back, making one person wait almost 15 minutes before he was served again. The waitress was barely apologetic and annoyed. I was embarassed because I brought my out-of-town guests to what I thought was a great restaurant.

Come on El Cholo! Get your act together!

PROS: Good margaritas
CONS: Poor salsa, slow service, not delicious

I expected so much from El Cholo and was very disapointed. First of we didnt get a seat that we requested for we were denied a booth. Our waiter was very slow we had to keep on him to refill our drinks. The food was not what I call authentic mexican food. The rice and beans I compare to a frozen dinner and the enchiladas my fiancee had were awful. The money was badly spent and the drive was not worth it. We will never return or reccommend this place to anyone.

I had high expectations of this restaurant. As a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, I've heard wonderful things about El Cholo. When this location opened up closer to my home, I decided to finally give it a try. I have to say, I think my expectations got the better of me. I was a little disappointed in the flavor of the food, in the pricing of the food and in the service. The food was definitely fresh and presented well. Unfortunately it seems a little flavorless. The service was generally friendly but sketchy. I have to admit some frustration in watching our waitress chat it up with one of the kitchen guys while our beverage glasses sat empty. Also, the menu pricing seemed a little high for what we dined on. I think overall my husband and I decided to frequent other places when looking for Mexican food.

The food took FOREVER to get to our table, we were looking for our waitress for al least 30 minutes, when we told the manager at least he apologized and someone else brought the food, the guacamole was the only good thing about the food, everything else was terrible. the put like two pounds of cheese on every dish, the rice was cold and didnt taste fresh, overall food and service were plain bad. They have good drinks thats about it.

PROS: good tequila
CONS: horrible food

We went to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Parade and game and went to El Cholo on 12/30/05--service was horrible and food was slow in coming and not what we ordered so had to send it back and then when they brought it the second time it took forever and was mostly cold. The waiter Enrique was more impressed with himself than he was in serving us. The valet parking was a ripoff as we had to wait a long time for our car even tho the crowd was not big waiting for a car. We would not return nor would we recommend El Cholo

PROS: NONE

This is a big busy Mexican Restaurant. The location is convenient, The Margaritas are nice, but it goes down hill from there.

Unfortunately, the menu is long on the history of the restaurant, but very short on selection. It is Mexican Food after all, so having a wide selection is possible, but based on the limited selection and the tasteof the food, I fear that this Mexican food is made some where else and reheated at the restaurant.

The Guacamole, made at your table is a nice touch, but having a tip jar on the tray is a bit too pushy.

It has great promise and a great past, but the management needs to work on the food.

Its always busy and if your looking for a quiet dinner is not the place

Whenever I have guests in from out of town, this is one of the first restaurants I take them to! I think it's a great taste of how awesome the Mexican food is in southern California (being from the east coast, everything tastes awesome to me, but this place particular). I'm a big fan of their margaritas and definitely for a mean - chicken chimichangas!! Great atmosphere and so much fun if you're going out for a friend's birthday. The chips and salsa even rock!

Revising my review - when I came back for a second visit, the food was mediocre (too greasy) and the service was very slow. On top of all this, they don't take the Pasadena.com card anymore. Thumbs down.

(Former review: Great food and the service is pretty good too. The restaurant is very loud and it is difficult to chat. The guacamole, which they make right at your table, is to die for!)

PROS: Nice interior
CONS: Slow service, food is mediocre

Sabroso means delicious in Spanish and that's what you taste if you come here. This restaurant offers a wonderful style of Mexican cuisine at a reasonable price. Some of the dishes remind me of El Torito but others seem to taste very authentic. The chips and salsa are nice and salty (a plus for me) and the drinks of the house are a perfect compliment to the meal. They even give you a little cookie treat at the end of the meal. Fun for the whole family.

I have been here several times and each time I enjoy it more and more. At first I thought the food was overrated, but now I'm beginning to experience the nice flavors of each dish. They do have good homemade chips and they tend to be nice and salty.Try the chimichangas and/or the green chili enchiladas suizas. A nice peach or strawberry margarita always goes nice with a good meal. Skip on dessert, not that great here. Enjoy the warm tortillas, I don't think they're fresh, but still good.

This place is great. I mostly like it because of the chips and salsa. My mom makes really great salsa and the majority of restaurants don't stand up to hers. This place is pretty good, I know it's a chain but don't be fooled. Tasty food too, try the chimichangas or the flautas. MMM Now I'm hungry.

I flunked El Cholo because of their food and their service. I have eaten there four times and think they have had plenty of chances. The last time that I ate there with a friend of mine, the food was disgusting. The Spanish rice was cold and her tamale wasn't cooked. My beef taco was OK, not the greatest. The waitress did nothing to rectify the situation. She just argued with us saying that's what tamales are supposed to taste like. Hey, we may be gringos, but we know what tamales are supposed totaste like. As we left, the manager gave my friend a gift certificate to come back, but neither of us want to go back.

I thought I'd found it at last, the perfect Mexican restaurant. It had style, and I was hoping content and service. But other than the decor, El Cholo was a severe disappointment. The order was taken quite late, and the food, was, a definite so-so, at least compared to the Western location. I had beef fajitas, and the beef was an insult to my tastebuds - it was drowning in oil as well as completely tasteless and chewy/sinewy. The sides were way too generous with the sour cream and cheese and way too light on the avocado and pico de gallo.

I was also sorely disappointed by the service, which can be characterized using two words: slow and hapless. It began almost tragically, with the waitress failing to come by our table for twenty minutes, at which point I'd read through the family history twice (having already read it at the Western location), continued with my top being spotted by the sizzle of the beef fajitas, and finally ending anti-climactically with an empty glass of water, left unfilled almost through the whole dinner.

Final thought - decor will never make up for mediocre food and inadequate service.

This restaurant is a great place to go with friends for food & margaritas. A personal favorite is the chicken chimichangas. The blue corn tortilla enchiladas are also wonderful! The atmosphere is a bit loud, so it's better for a party or large group. There are also some people who come around playing music - sometimes it's annoying, sometimes it's fun.

I have always enjoyed El Cholo. I LOVE their margaritas (although they are not as good when you order them by the pitcher) and the chicken chimichangas are so good I haven't even bothered to try anything else. It's not a place to go and have an intense, quiet conversation but it's fun for birthday parties. If you like it a little quieter week nights are nice because it's not as busy.

I was not impressed by the food or the service. From my estimation, this will probably be more of a fad restaurant in the Pasadena area. The original in LA is great, but I was very disappointed with my visit to the Pasadena location. It is currently on of the hip places to go, but there are much better places to go for basic or more upscale Mexican in Pasadena that have nicer atmospheres and cuisine.

I used to love this place. I had been a fan of the one in Santa Monica and was thrilled when they opened one closer to my house. I love their green corn tamales which are seasonal and I always liked their guacamole and margaritas.

The past two times I went there...there were long waits, the food was not good and it was so incredibly cold that I couldn't enjoy myself because my teeth were practically chattering.

I will not be back. I wish I didn't crave the tamales but I won't wait and freeze to death just for a tamale.

Totally bought into the hype when they took over the building once the pub left - but there is always a wait, the food is average and it is very expensive. The only dish worth going for are the Tacos Al Carbon - really tasty. The bar isn't bad - but pretty noisy. Only lot parking is valet and there isn't much street parking. I would go to the Taco Truck on Fair Oaks.

This place is more bells and whistles than anything else. I've been to the El Cholo in Los Angeles but this one was just not the same. There was something about my food that made it seem as if manufactured on an assembly line. The texture of the tamale was as if previsously frozen and popped in the microwave and tops with some sauce. I was also disappointed with the quality of their taco. Instead of the traditional folded taco, they service up these things that look like taquitos but half the size. They do serve a GOOD margarita though.

They do serve a GOOD margarita though.

...that is if you don't have the slightest idea and taste in food. You are what you eat, I found out when I first came here. There was absolutely NOTHING on the menu, except for the $$$ symbol all over it. I couldn't even enjoy the drinks because the food had done it for me. I love Mexican food and this restaurant's great (decore wise), but not a great place to enjoy the food. If you're completely lost and the choice you've made are based on observation, not word of mouth, then you are most welcomed here and experience it for yourself. I can only recommend this to people that does not have taste.

Pros: Architecture, Parking

.

The service was incredibly slow, the food was cold...the margarita was GREAT!!!!!!!!! The decor is quaint and the patio is protected from most of the elements. I hate valet parking when there is a lot provided by the restaurant, the only other option was the street.

Pros: Patio, Margarita's, Ambiance

Cons: , Slow Service, Cold Food

they have a very nice bar, with a good selection of Margaritas, which were very good. but the food was nothing but average, a few things you don't see very often, green corn tamales ,and such. But I have had better food from little 'Mom n' Pop' places....

The sign outside says a "Spanish Cafe," but the food they serve is Mexican - and its only average. Atmosphere and value are two things this restaurant does have going for it. It is a Spanish style building with decent patio seating and a waiting staff in semi-authentic dress, and most items on the menu are relatively inexpensive.
