It's surprising to find such a chic gift shop in a public library. Located in the Grand Central Los Angeles Public library downtown, it's great for picking up a well-designed card, delicate piece of jewelry, or witty book on your lunch break. There's a section devoted to Los Angeles travel and art books for tourists or natives wanting to further their knowledge of the city and a rotating stock of coffee table books, tote bags and purses, and artistmade jewelry. The store offers designer items like jewelry from Alexis Bittar and purses from LoopNYC as well as kookier items like cutesy Japanese stationery and t-shirts declaring "I like boys in glasses". I also enjoy the large selection of post cards and magnets featuring vintage images of LA scenes or '50s housewives. There's also usually a sale about once a month, with a variety of cards, books, and gift items on sale for 25%-50% off. Best of all, the profits benefit the Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds literary programs for children and teens.

Pros: Rotating stock of products, Friendly Staff

Cons: Parking can be tricky

The LA Public Library's Central Library is one of the overlooked gems of the city. The outer courtyard is a peaceful oasis in the middle of downtown, and the facade pays tribute to the foundations of Western thought.

Besides the gargantuan collection of books, there are specialized sections for kids and teens, as well as a popular media area for checking out movies, music, and magazines.

There is a Panda Express inside, so you can grab a cheap meal. And next door is Cafe Pinot for a very nice meal.

PROS: Peaceful, beautiful, compendious

Truly amazing library. World class architecture, small art galleries and tons of books. Simply the best library in Los Angeles. They have an adjacent parking lot that is reasonable when you validate at the library, which eliminates the problems of finding a space downtown. Highly recommended even if you aren't interested in checking out a book.

Leavey Library at the University of Southern California is a great place for students to study. Except for Saturdays, it is open 24 hours a day for those late-nighters.

You can spend hours in this library - the rooms seem to be endless and there are books upon books to explore. Fun children's library and they always have some art in their galleries. The architecture is quite beautiful too - something you don't often see in LA.

I like this library a lot because it's huge and it reminds you that LA is really a large city after all. The parking is the only downfall because it's expensive if you go there during the day. They have a lot of random books, computers, and exhibits. Located in the heart of downtown, this is a great place to go if you need a bit of peace and quiet. Watch out if you are alone though. Some strange characters like to hang out here.

I've always been able to get even the most difficult assignment done at the LA Public Library, whether that be for a school paper, job report, or story I'm researching. It has almost every book you could possibly want, little out of the way corners for the peace and quiet you need, and an academic aura that encourages productivity.

In addition, the library offers interesting (free!) art exhibits and lectures on a variety of topics. If you feel some need for sun and inspiration, the fountains and park outside provide an inspirational oasis in the middle of the city.

The only drawback can be the rather pricey parking, so public transportation or a long scenic walk from a more affordable location is recommended.

When fire destroyed the main branch of the library some years back, the city didn't wait long before resurrecting it in this dynamic building. With large atriums and plenty of room to mill about, this a library that kids accustomed to doing all their work on a home internet should visit. Situated on several floors, there is an astounding collection featuring books, magazines, music cd's and sheet music, dvds and much more. It's located very close to the L.A. subway line and is open daily. There is a wonderful computer system which helps you find your book instantly, although there is plenty of helpful staff at your disposal as well. I love to go down here occasionally and check out a wealth of books and music, all the more desireable as you can return them to any city branch of the library, not necessitating an immediate return downtown. It is well worth a visit just to walk around and look at the architecture. Also, lovers of research will think they've died and gone to heaven as they realize the amo

I used to feel that it was unfortunate that Los Angeles did not have a landmark library like most large cities. But the rebuilding of the L.A. Library in downtown satisfied my need for an architectural work of art in which I could explore literary ones. The building in which the collection in housed is gorgeous...you can stare at the ceiling fixtures and walls for hours. There are older collections which the eye can appreciate as well. The collection itself is, of course, extensive and features rare books and exhibits displaying cultural literature.

There is free computer access with your library card. Watch out for very large crowds when school groups come and tour, and when the after-school crowds hit around 3 PM. Although there are some "interesting types" that frequent the library, I always feel secure due to the abundant security guards. There are a few fast food places as well as a more upscale cafe on the first floor.

Los Angeles' downtown has long been derided as not having the attraction that other metros do. However, there are a few places you can take out of town visitors to and the Public Library is certainly one of them. Refurbished after a fire, the art deco era building has a lot of charm architecturally and houses eclectic art on the inside. Revolving exhibits are of historical and artistic interest and comfortable seating provides the opportunity to read in peace. Limited computer/Internet facilities and sometimes extensive lines at checkout are some of the drawbacks.
