While most yarn stores sell the same commercially available yarns. Art Fibers sells their own yarn, which makes them a destination in San Francisco. If you are visiting (or local) and can only go to one yarn store in the Bay Area, this is it. Everything else you can buy online.

When I first started knitting a few years ago, I started looking around for local yarn stores. Art Fibers was only a few blocks away from where I work, so I decided to step in. I was amazed at the selection of yarns they carried. However, this wasn't your typical yarn store. All of their yarns were made exclusively for them. You wouldn't find the same stuff anywhere else.

Their small studio store has walls lined with shelves, filled with dozens of different types of yarns, in varying colors. They carry everything from wools, to cottons, to ribbon yarns, to a variety of novelty yarns (furs, glittering, boucle, you name it).

The store also features comfy chairs, arranged in a circle near the store's windowfront, where you can sit and knit. They offer sample balls of all of their yarns (except for the special ribbon yarns), and encourage their patrons to whip up swatches of the yarns they are considering purchasing to see how they like them. And you are welcome to keep your samples afterwards. Plus, every yarn (except the ribbon) has knitted samples hanging from the shelves in front of them, so you can see and feel the finished product. And there are plenty of finished projects in their yarns to admire. (They offer patterns for most.)

They do sell some patterns, including ones custom made for their yarns. But, if you can't find something you like, they have a pattern program, and will create a free custom pattern if you buy the yarn for it through them. They'll customize the pattern to your exact specifications.

And as if that weren't all wonderful enough, the staff at Art Fibers is awesome. After only my 2nd time coming in, the staff recognized and remembered me. I don't get to stop in as frequently as I used to, but the staff always remembers who I am, and even remembers projects I've been working on. They are knowldgeable, and willing to help you create your project, show you techniques, and offer advice. Plus, they offer classes and workshops.

PROS: Unique high quality yarns. Excellent customer service. Free custom patterns
CONS: Prices are a bit higher, but definitely worth it.
