I have been here for lunch many times and the food is good and they get you in and out quickly. No doubt it is dark and you do have to come in and wait in the service area but for lunch it was no worry. Never had a bad meal or a screwup.

If you want a bad experience from the moment you walk in to a restaurant, try Don Antonio's.
The host desk is adjacent to the bar and the kitchen; this forces you and your party to stand in the middle of service. No one takes your name, rather you write your own name and number of diners on one of many notepads. This leads you to never know where you are in place for dining. Moving to the bar leads to more disappointment as the bartenders seem to readily ignore anyone who isn't seated at the bar or isn't a waiter. Once we did get a margarita it was good. Flavorful with fresh lime and decent tequila.
We noticed that people who came in after us were seated before us so we decided that we needed to take seating into our own hands and remind the "host" that we had been waiting for a table. We were immediately taken to the patio and seated. We reviewed the menu and found two items that excited us along with a standard of Queso Fundido. The Queso came and was delicious. It was served with pre-made flour tortillas which proved to be disappointing compared to other Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood that make their own fresh. Our table had not been set properly and we were missing knives which are more than necessary to eat Queso. We asked for the knives twice and it took the serving staff nearly five minutes to return with cutlery.
When our entrees arrived we were still eating the Queso and this left no room on the table. I made physical note of this to our server which caused him to begin yelling at his colleagues to clear our table. This is a basic restaurant service standard and truly proved how bad the service had been since we entered.
I didn't think anything could get worse, but it did. My entree, a pork tostada and side of rice was cold. I understand that the lettuce and sour cream must be served cold, but the pork was a temperature that would never pass health inspection. The side of rice was even colder.
I spoke to the manager who offered to remake the dish; which I declined. He excused himself to deliver another table then came back to talk to me. The fact that he walked away while we were discussing our issue truly told me that service is not that important at Don Antonio's. I told the manager that I would pay for the food and drinks that we had eaten and to please close out and bring our check. After waiting for more than three minutes, we walked out of the restaurant without getting our check. The manager did wish us a "good evening" as we left.
I'd like to say the food was good but the service is horrible and never provided us the opportunity to eat.

This restaurant is famous for the fresh food served daily. I have been a faithful patron since 1983, when I attended UCLA. The transformation of the interior has improved but there is no improving the infamous cave and decorative outdoor patio. Steve and Esther, the owners, have done a tremendous job with the long standing waiters on patron service. They are all very attentive. Taco Nite is busy on Wednesdays so you better get there early. Parking is no problem because they offer valet parking. Sometimes when I go for an early lunch, I even get my car hand washed next door while I eat. Hands down I will eat here at Don Antonio's before I go to an El Torito or Acapulcos.

i gave don antonio's a couple of tries for the wednesday dollar taco nights but concluded, IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!! you'll get seated MUCH faster if you're a big party, but if you're a pair looking for some good grub, expect to wait very looong to be seated. i admit, the taco's are good and they have lots of variety, but they're starting to skimp on the portions. it's also very difficult to find parking.

I must admit that I have only been to Don Antonios during two time periods: for lunches and for Wednesday $1 taco nights. The Lunch specials are great, and you can receive a gourmet taco and enchilada for under $5. The $1 taco is a great deal on good-sized delicious tacos, perfect to go with $6 sangrias in huge goblets. Highly recommended!
