Blue Pearl is an unscrupulous business that uses its inhouse charity Frankie's Friends to scam people. The publicist for Frankie's Friends does a great job of getting celebrity names linked to this charity but buyer beware! Their Bait & Switch scams the indigent into acquiring debt with 26.99% interest. It's noteworthy that the charity's money is sent directly to the Shaw brothers, one a Dr. Neil Shaw who poses as a pet savior for low income families. The Shaws not only own Blue Pearl and all its subsidiaries but Neil is the director and Darryl the manager of Frankie's Friends.

Families in need are assured on the phone they qualify for Frankie's Friends and that all the paperwork is easy to complete on the day of the pet's lifesaving procedure. On that stressful day however, the pet owner is told they don't qualify but can get help on Blue Pearl's special credit plan with exorbitant interest! Frankie's Friends does cover a few token families in order to keep the pretense that they are a charity.

The details of my experience are as follows:

I emailed Ms. Granger of Frankie's Friends reporting my monthly income and seeking assistance. I followed her instructions to get an appointment with Dr. Mears and contact management.

I spoke with management and staff four different times on the phone during which crucial information was withheld from me. During the conversations $311 was quoted as the amount I would be required to pay based on my income. I repeatedly asked what proof of income forms were needed and was assured that none were required. I also offered to give info showing I had no assets. Again, was told to come in and fill out papers on the "day" of the procedure which seemed odd but now I know the reason.

Time was of the essence and it appeared that all systems were go when I arrived for the one time life saving procedure for my pet. Upon arriving, my only anxiety was in regard to my pet's treatment and recovery, little did I know what awaited me. I was instructed, "Go to the computer and fill out the care credit for Frankie's Friends." On the screen there was no identifier indicating that it was a GE Capital Retail Bank's credit card application with 26.99% interest. Someone at Blue Pearl made the decision to put this form on its network of computers without its real name.

After submitting the info I waited in the examination room for Dr. Mears to take Cody for his procedure. Instead, the manager appeared and said that I was disqualified because the form I filled out was not for Frankie's Friends but was a "care credit." No one identified the company behind the "care credit" but I was told since I could get the "care credit", I was disqualified from Frankie's Friends. This couldn't have been orchestrated any better, the failure to disclose meant that I would go to Blue Pearl prepared to pay the quoted price of $311 not anticipating the switch to $1350. (Weeks later I would learn the "care credit" was a GE Capital Retail Bank credit card with 26.99% interest.)

Incredulously, the manager said that there were other people with no income who were refused because they could get this care credit. I asked why this was withheld when I spoke to her on the phone. She simply repeated that others with no income were denied. She had opportunities to give me this information over the phone but intentionally did not, for good reason. Exploiting the emotions of pet lovers makes money. Because of the timing, my choice was to either have my pet euthanized or not pay bills causing bankruptcy. How this was set up strongly suggests that I was not the first person to have this experience. It's despicable that a charity is used as a lure to trap the indigent into making very difficult decisions.

After being had and knowing that the so called "care credit" was a hoax, I demanded that any form I filled out on the computer be expunged. Still, no one identified the company behind the "care credit". Imagine my shock when I get a GE Capital Retail Bank credit card in the mail weeks later. I promptly called the company and told them I do not fill out credit card applications and requested that this bogus application be expunged from my records. Upon learning how deceptive the process was, I was sent to the fraud division where the application was immediately expunged.

I'm hoping that this information will help others avoid a most stressful and difficult situation.

For anyone who has had a bad experience with Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners ANYWHERE you need to FILE A STATE VETERINARY BOARD COMPLAINT. You can find your state's contact info by going to the Veterinary Abuse Network File a Complaint page and look for your state. Too many horror stories coming out of this place and they currently have a number of open complaints about them at the state board in NY. Also read Justice for Charlotte - a Blue Pearl nightmare if there ever was one, and she's not alone.

Is there a negative rating I can give this place?? For a facility that I have heard so much about, being very disappointed is a compliment to them. From the moment we walked in, all they fed us were lies. We took our fur baby in for a broken leg, surgery was set, extra xrays were ordered, quote was given, but they didn't have the right screw to begin with!!! The "alternative" was to shove a pin in that may or may not work because of her bones and would definitely cause major arthritus problems in a couple of years. Every time I called, I was fed a different story from the front desk. They are not even trying to rectify the situation and the unnecessary money we had to shell out. They are not concerned with my baby, but only how soon they can get paid foe a service that should have never been rendered. If you love your fur baby, I tell you, this is by far the WORST place, even in an emergency.

Not a good experience. Two years ago next month we lost our French Bulldog Frasier, post back surgery. He was only 4 years old, we gave them every selfish dime they asked for, he was doing ok post-surgery we spent numerous hours at Blue Pearl with him, then a few days in he began labored breathing and they wanted to move him to ICU. When we arrived he was suffering terrible and we refused to allow him to suffer like that, gasping for every breath, my husband a retired vet tech asked if something had happened, did he throw up? Aspirate? No nothing they assured us, but his little red pillow was covered in vomit and blood, yet he did not throw up. To this day I will never believe anything they tell me, I will never trust them! Accidents happen, things happen I can handle reality, just be honest. I can't prove anything of course because if I could it would be a whole new ball game. But I know my dog, my heart, my instincts and they all tell me something happened that should not have, we too got the silent treatment, very non caring staff while my husband held our baby as he had to be put to sleep. When we knew he had to be put to sleep they started to do it with our dog in the crate, and my husband said no give him to me he will be looking at me when he takes his last breath. Our hearts are forever broken, I wonder daily about what happened, what went wrong, but they don??t give it a second thought, all they wanted was their money. Our dog was our life, they really need to get back to the basics of feeling and having a heart rather than trying to become a large chain. Very disappointed. ?

This Vet Hospital is as good as it gets. Dr. Shakeri and Dr. Lightfoot and their supporting staff saved our little green cheeked conure Buttons. When all the vet offices in Orlando were closed or refused to take him in to treat his injured leg, we found Blue Pearl and drove 91 miles to them to get him help and it was worth every mile. We arrived and were immediately taken back and his leg was assessed and treatment followed.
When we returned to Orlando we found that the veterinarians that we chose to go to were not as advanced and caring as the Blue Pearl team. Over the course of several weeks we made multiple trips to Tampa to get him the care he needs.
Without their extraordinary care Buttons would not had a chance of survival. Now he is happy and healthy still enjoying life!

After 3 minor glitches signing in(wrong gender & e mail address and fax not there) we were very pleased with Dr Kane. He was warm and positive. We didn't feel he rushed us or pushed us to a decision. We were encouraged to call with any ?s. We left feeling much better about our pet's welfare than with our regular vet. He seemed very concerned about not stressing our already stressed out dog. Would love to have him as our primary vet.

We recently had a delicate surgical procedure completed on our dog. We were given an estimate of 4,000 to 6,000 with 6,000 being the discovery of the worst possible scenario. Surgery went better than expected and our little one was doing well. The next day we went to visit and spent some time with her, took her for a walk, etc. Ten minutes after we left they called us and told us that our dog had a cardiac arrest. We turned our car around and headed back expecting to hold our little one for the last time. When we arrive she had began breathing and regained her heart rhythm. She was in extremely critical condition. No one was speaking to us at the clinic. We had to wait for a phone call from the surgeon who explained that the vet had inadvertently passes a nasogastric tube through our dogs lung causing the cardiac arrest. Needless to say BluePearl did not due the right and fair thing after this unfortunate event. We incurred all of the additional costs due to their error for the necessary care for her recovery, which was nothing less than a miracle. Our final bill was over 7,000 and she still requires additional care which are seeking elsewhere. They do have some excellent physicians and surgeons but their business practices do leave something to be desired. I suggest you explore other care options. They aren't the only specialist available. Do your research.

Very upsetting dealing with BP! Our dog has cancer and went through a month of $$$ daily radiation therapy. NO positive results. No follow up calls from vet while he went through 3 to 4 weeks of healing. The problems with this facility have been never ending. Mistreatment of our pet while he was there.
Now the surgeon called and said he needed surgery with another round of radiation therapy. She said the oncologist would "call us the next day". Two weeks later and STILL waiting for that call.

The facility ONLY cares about the $$$$. Find another vet for your animal. Avoid this overpriced place.

This vet practice was recommended by my veterinarian (they had personally brought their pets there as well). From the time I called and made an appointment to when we left FL Veterinary Partners aka BluePearl (Tampa location) I was impressed by the caring of all of the staff towards the people coming in and out of the facility. We were seen very close to our appointment time (and there were emergency surgeries coming in as well). I saw Dr Otte for a consult and testing for my cat. She was so caring and pleasant. She explained everything she thought my kitty's problem could be and suggested tests.(The same tests my vet recommended but did not have the equipment to do) Yes, they do come in and give you an estimate, the high and the low, and have you sign agreeing to pay. (if you or I go to a Dr/hospital they have us sign agreeing to pay and there is no high/low estimate) I appreciated being able to be informed of my costs and given options for the care of my cat. I agreed with Dr Otte and had the tests done and guess what, the bill was the LOW estimate! A good surprise! I believe they care about your pets. While in the waiting room I spoke with a few people there who told me many inspiring stories of how their pet had been taken care of (chemo, bone surgery, eyes,)(parrot, duck, dog and cat) one in particular was a vet who drove 2 1/2 hours to have surgery on her parrot. I had read some negative reviews and was scared to take my cat there, but after my personal experience and observations I can say it was a very positive experience. I would recommend Dr Otte and the facility without a doubt. I can not speak of the other vets there but based on my conversations with the other people in the waiting room they loved the vets they saw. And no, I don't work there or for any vet. I am glad I gave them a chance and did not act on the negative reviews. I would definitely go back and recommend Dr Otte and BluePearl Veterinary aka FL Veterinary Partners. I also want to mention Shannon? and how caring and sweet she was, it helped a lot as I was an emotional mess with worry about my cat's health.

Taking good care of your pet can be terribly expensive, however I have chosen the route of doing ROUTINE check ups with Dr. Gadden. He is an amazing vet, whom I feel really cares. Even with that said, you can't put a price on my baby's life.

Our Scotty was diagnosed with a large tumor on his spleen, and were given little hope of his survival. A friend suggested that we take him to Blue Pearl (Fl. Veterinary Sp.) for a 2nd opinion. All the staff & Vets were professional, yet extremely kind and caring. It was hard for me to leave my boy there, but I was comforted by the fact that he was at a top notched facility with a big heart. Mick had surgery and it turned out to not be cancer. We thank Blue Pearl and it's staff for excellent treatment, extreme kindness, and for saving our Mick. I have worked in the (human) medical field for 40 years and wished most hospitals functioned as well, and as caring as Blue Pearl.

This animal hospital provided experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate care for my animals. There is no question that the entire staff works diligently to provide the best, and friendliest, care in the community. I trust them completely and wouldn??t dream of going anywhere else. I feel that providing high quality care for my animals is my responsibility. The doctors and the staff have helped me to make sure that my animals have a wonderful quality of life for as long as I can keep them! I greatly appreciate the entire staff.

On August 2nd I had to bring my dog here for luxating patella surgery. This was actually her 2nd time having the surgery, since the first time it didn't take (the first surgery did not take place here). I was really, really nervous and quite upset that she would have to go through this again, as it's a pretty major surgery and long recovery. Luckily I got the best doctor, who was not only kind but also pretty reassuring that she would heal up fine and the surgery would be a success. He even called me right after the surgery was done to tell me that it went great.

It's almost time for our 6 week follow up and my cat is healing up quite nicely. It's been a rough 6 weeks and I did have to call the doctor a couple of times just to make sure I was following the aftercare properly, but the staff was always very polite and got back to me right away.

Took my pet here. It was horrible, all they cared about was the money. Took my dog to PVH - pet veterinary hospital - Dr. Demiaand got the same cancer treatment for a whole lot less. 50 % less.

I have not had the misfortune to trust my pet's health to FVS. I am sure they were a great clinic years ago, but it appears as though they have gotten too big for their britches. They have a nice lobby: big fish tanks and ample seating room. The receptionists are very kind and offer their condolences to the many individuals who obviously lost their pets that evening. I was there 20 minutes and saw at least four families leaving in tears. That has to say something. The most appalling part of my visit was visiting the animal in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). I was instructed to walk through a door and take the first door to the left. I walked into an operating room! Confused, I backed out and asked the receptionist if I was headed in the right direction. She said I was going the right way and lead me through the operating room to a small room of kennels on the other side of a glass wall. How is an animal in ICU supposed to recover when they are surrounded by other animals being operated on and other animals who are in post-op?! I think these folks are dropping the ball big time. Who can recover from surgery when they are constantly reminded of it? The animal in question left FVS today. Upon her exit, she made a massive bowel movement and seemed much happier when she was in the vehicle. The "kennel" she was kept in was only inches larger than she was so obviously she was not going to produce any bowel movements in there. Again, how is any living being supposed to recover in those conditions? One would assume from the lobby at FVS that the facilities in the back of the house would be just as up to par, but not the case at all! I am well aware of the financial responsibilities a person must acknowledge when they adopt an animal, but for the prices they charge it only seems fair that an animal should not have to recover from surgery in the same room they were operated on in. I will never bring my animals to this facility.

The vet explained everything and all possible outcomes. The whole staff was wonderful. The facility is nice and the vet was very empathetic. I love that the vet and staff here actually took the time to explain everything and made our bad experience a good one. Compare to the "Moneygrubbing" people at animal emergency these people are a breath of fresh air.

The minute I met Dr. Kimura, I was relaxed. The communication level with the doctors and staff was excellent. From the front desk to ICU, everyone was welcoming and caring. Dr. Kimura is brilliant. I been telling everyone that if you need a vet specialist, come here.

Recent visit this past month and was disgusted. Our cat stayed one night in the "Intensive Care Unit" which was dirty, paint peeling and lots of tape over the oxygen cage. The "nurse" seemed stressed and very trite, but many of the cages were occupied so she was busy. Asked when our pet would recieve fluids and next blood draws. Was told "when I get a chance". Concerned about the care my pet was recieving. Elected to take our baby back to our family vet after they opened on Monday. FVS or "bluepearl" for urgent care only, would not recommend for prolonged care.

I brought my bird to FVS when my regular bird veterinarian was not in the office. I am a nurse, and although I knew my bird had liver disease and ovarian problems and needed treatment several times, I never really understood what was going on.

The front desk staff was wonderful - although I had to wait a while for the doctor, since I came in on emergency I wasn't surprised.

Dr. Lightfoot is the bird specialist there and even though it was on emergency, she was our doctor. She apologized for keeping me waiting (it was about 20 minutes). What I really appreciated was that she talked to me - asked me questions and considered my answers before doing anything. She also handled my bird amazingly well - she hates everybody but me, but she loved Dr. Lightfoot!

Since my regular bird doctor had just done blood work, she didn't do everything all over again. She called and got the lab work from his hospital and only repeated the things that were abnormal. And although my regular doctor is very good, I felt like Dr. Lightfoot understood her problem better, asked questions and helped me understand why she may have this problem and the limits of what we could safely do to diagnose and treat her. I was very happy with everything and think Dr. Lightfoot and her nurse Angie are both wonderful. It makes me sad to see the other negative comments here - I wonder if we are talking about a different place?

This is not about Shaw. It's about Fla. Vet. Specialists. My dachshund required a neurologist to perform surgery on his neck because of disc problems. This was my third experience - other 2 were different dogs at different locations. It was the best experience ever. The doctor called me after the milogram was performed, explained exactly what he would be doing, called me after the surgery and gave me the results. The bill was the lowest of all three surgeries. I was given pain meds and great followup. Recovery was smooth and in record time. Compared to the surgeries performed at two other locations around the state, this was the absolute best.

There is a reason there are alot of bad reviews. My girlfriend worked at FVS before they grew to additional facilities. They used to be a caring animal hospital. Now they are so big and carry so much overhead there thought is on the bottom line, not the indicidual patient.
Our cat died there after an emergency urinary infection a few years ago.
He was 2 and it seemed they could have been faster and had better doctors available to save our cat. The cat was perfectly healthy 2 days earlier. I am a fair person, I felt they did about 85% for my pet of what they could have done. You just don't realize it until its too late. I recommend getting with a good caring vet. Pebble creek animal hosp on Bruce B Downs is where we trust the care of our animals. We don't use FVS for our emergencies any longer.

I'm surprised there are so many bad reviews. I recently took my puppy there around midnight because the whole day she was vomiting and lethargic along with other things. They told me all the test they could do and also offered an outpatient treatment. They leaned more to the outpatient treatment and it was the cheapest option. I didn't feel like they were trying to steal my money at all because they could have easily told me the test were necessary and I would have paid. My puppy is better now and I would recommend going there.

We are so grateful to the surgeons and staff at FVS Tampa and Brandon for saving our chocolate lab Bailey. We started at our regular vet, and an abdominal X-ray showed a huge mass in his belly. We went for ultrasound and were referred to FVS for surgery the next morning. We were given multiple updates over the phone and shown nothing but patience and compassion, even with our thousands of questions. All of the techs called knew Bailey by name on his return visit for follow-up. I felt as though Bailey was treated as if he were one of their own. I would highly recommend FVS to any pet owner. Thanks again!!

It is critical for those who have had unfortunate experiences with Florida Veterinary Specialists (a Blue Pearl company who is part of a chain of practices such as NYC Veterinary Specialists) may file a formal complaint with the Florida Department of Business and Regulation for starters. You are entitled by law to a complete copy of your veterinary records including notes, xrays, mri and ultrasound discs, surgical and nurse logs and notes, labwork, etc. The law varies from state to state on how long they must hold these records so secure and preserve your copies. Also, maintain necropsy reports if one was peformed. Your complaint will lead to an investigation and may help countless other animals from suffering from veterinary negligence or malpractice.

You may download a complaint form here:
http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/reg/complaint.html

You may also consider consulting an animal welfare attorney in your area for litigation.

I had an emergency with my 18 yr old Blue and Gold macaw - he was attacked by a raccoon and his leg was mangled and he was in shock. None of the emergency hospitals (of course this was on a Sunday) in the Cape Coral area would see him. They ALL recommended that I get him into see Dr. Teresa Lightfoot at FVS, who is one of the best and most famous bird veterinarians in the world! When we arrived, we were seen first by one of the emergency doctors, who was very caring and stabilized Rocky with oxygen and fluid (after talking to Dr. Lightfoot on the telephone). Then Dr. Lightfoot came in herself (this was after 9 p.m. on a Sunday now) and the competent and gentle way she handled Rocky was amazing!. He would never let anyone else touch him, but he went to her immediately! She gave us honest answers and options. Not knowing how important Rocky was to us, or if we would be able to afford hospitalization, she gave us the option of giving him pain medication, antibiotics and a bandage and then showing us how to give home care. When we explained that we wanted the best for him, she agreed that staying in the hospital with 24 hours care, frequent bandage changes, blood work when he was more stable, X rays and surgery to fix the leg would be ideal. She gave us an estimate of $600-$1500 dollars. We agreed, and left him for 2 days in her care.
Our bill was about $900, and we got money back that we weren't expecting (but were very happy to get :-)
That was several months ago - Rocky is back to his normal active, talkative self.
Dr. Lightfoot and the FVS staff saved his life, there is no question They were kind, knowledgeable and incredibly skilled. I would never take my bird anywhere else!

I am not sure what to think. My 5 year old dog had an eye tumor, they removed the eye, and did a good job. There were AlOT of tests and a $1000 cat scan as well. The testing seemed excessive. The total spent was around $6000. I passed on radiation. My dog has had 6 good months but now he possibly has cancer in the bone as well as lungs. My regular vet wants me to go back there for chemo treatment. I dont think so........My regular vet told me after the surgery, lungs were usually where cancer reappeared. I thought we had a clean bill of health after the surgery, no discussion of long term prognosis, similiar cases, etc from FVC. My vet still seems to they they are ok. My mother spent $1000 s on her cat for allergies there which the cat didnt end up having, the cat was diabetic, which they didnt catch and another vet finally made the correct diagnosis. Another friend stopped going to FVS due to test costs.........I think this clinic should be avoided. It is true people are taking there animals there in critical situations but my overall conclusion is $ is at the forefront of everything for this outfit. I also agree with other comments that some of these ratings and comments are posssibly from employees of FVS...just saying.........

My wife and I had a bad experience at this facility. I am gathering experiences encountered at this facility. If you have something to share, write me at Bill@Simplydoyourjob.com.

Keep in mind, if you question your experience and animal outcome, contact the Florida Department of Bisiness and Professional Regulation Department to make a complaint.

I learned this in psychology people and its called transferrence, which refers to redirection of a person's feelings for a significant person or moment to the therapist. Does this sound familiar? Rarely does one go to a health facility because they are healthy and thats the same for pets. FVS is a specialty facility and thats a step above a standard hospital which means two things. Either you go through a battery of tests w/your vet and spend $$ just to be transferred to FVS to go above and beyond (which costs $$) or your in an emergency situation, likely anxious and upset and (these days) broke. Neither or those situations are ideal so one comes to the conclusion that it" must be the fault" of the current caretakers of your pet (FVS) and that's called transferrence. There are always choices people, why else would you get an estimate, its YOUR CHOICE. Would you rather get a bill w/out the estimate? Either way you have to pay if you want quality healthcare b/c until you write your congressman and he changes the laws on healthcare, its costs money to save lives and thats the business FVS is in.. SAVING LIVES.
My pets have been going to FVS for multiple reasons and although I am not financially well-off, I can appreciate someone being honest about the costs of tests PRIOR to having them done so I may make the choice of whether i can afford a test or not. Correct me if I am wrong but I have NEVER gotten an estimate from any human doctor prior to a treatment, only a bill. So the next time I am faced with an emergency situation with my pet I wont hesitate to go to the clinic thats been there for me all along, these redicoulous reviews will not deter me. By the way, if you find yourself in an emergency with your pet and you feel swayed to believe all of these naysayers, have a look outside the clinic and tell me if you see any lexus's or landrovers. Not likely, Unless its the client at the front desk whos arguing about the bill and chances are, he wants a discount cuz hes a human MD or listen in on the client whos angry and wants to sue the clinic for services rendered but outcome was unfortunate ,chances are, shes a lawyer. So in a nutshell, dont own a pet if you cant afford pet insurance (there is such a thing) cuz i have it, and if you believe everything you read, go to a cheap facility and get mediocre care, its america, its also YOUR CHOICE.:)

STAY AWAY FROM THIS FACILITY !!! They only care about getting your money--and when you run out ( for me, that was $15,000 in 3 days)
they tell you you'll have to put your animal to sleep. I don't believe my dog had a chance to survive after being run over. They just kept her alive until they had bled me dry of money. And they still reported me to the credit bureaus. My score WAS 703 before my unfortunate choice of bringing my dog to FVS...no more!THERE IS A WONDERFUL VET EMERGENCY CARE CENTER ON THE CORNER OF FLORIDA AVE AND BEARSS AVE. STAY AWAY FROM FVS !!!!

From the moment my rhodesian ridgeback and I walked into the facility we were treated as special guests. The concern and caring attitude of the front desk personnel was just the beginning.Dr.Reems took the time to not only explain the procedure but to alert me to the risks,as rare as they were.I appreciated thetime spent after the surgery speaking with Dr.Reems about how things went and what we should expect during the healing process. The follow-up was taken care of at the Brandon office where we received the same professional and caring attitude from Dr. Otte,Heather Esposito,Courtney Cook,Nicole Shearer, and Amanda. You could not have put together a better staff!!!!! THANKYOU FOR EVERYTHING; Maleka is doing great!!
