Do not cater from Alon's unless you want undercooked and cold food to arrive late and you don't really need the condiments and accessories they state come with the order. Apologies are nice but my event was more stressful than it should

Alons is great. I'd get The blueberry muffin for breakfast the creme brle for desert and the tomato basil soup for lunch.

I started going to Alon's Bakery in 1996. I would always get the Midnight Cake which is soooo moist and desirable. The Cinnamon Twist are excellent also I always give these to the teachers from my children especially to say, "I apologize", or they are greatly appreciated.

Pros: Best bakery!

Cons: far drive

As close as Atlanta has to a European-style bakery, Alon's offers up fresh breads, cheeses, meats, sandwiches, and prepared foods to its Morningside neighbors. Inside, different areas house different products. There is a cheese case, a wine area, and cases for salads and meats to eat in or take out. Grab a butcher paper wrapped mozzarella, sun dried tomato, and arugula sandwich on focaccia, or a cup of the ever changing soup du jour menu (grab the tomato-basil if available). Outside are wicker seats and tiny tables to chow down atop the white paper bags the food is stuffed in.

At first I thought the desserts were excellent although quite a bit pricey. My second experience, however was not very well... There is a lemon-merengue pie on the website but when I called to order it, the man argued with me that there wasn't and that they Couldn't even make one. The previous review of the attitude there being rude and "all that" was correct. I guess the awards have gone to their heads... Lost another customer.

I heard raves and raves about Alon's and finally went. Totally disappointed. The sandwiches were mediocre, not that this fact had any impact on pricing. I would eat at Panera Bread a million times before I would go back here.

No idea about the pastries though...

Everyone seems to know Alons. I went there for lunch with out of town guests and we were not terribly impressed with their sandwiches and salads. But their breads and pasteries are wonderful and I highly recommend them

Ok, maybe you guys never left the USA , exc for Mexico, so you don't know European pastries. I had to laugh after going there when reading, best french bakery.. Hello, wake up, not French at all

The take out is so overpriced. Look at the smoked salmon. The chopped liver is bought from elsewhere and trucked in. Check out their parking lot in the am. The hummus is awful. overpriced cheese, even Whole Foods is cheaper and that is so sad. Atlanta does not have a true European market, exc for those that think Alon's is European.. also, so rude and think they rule. Not so. Give me a nice french pastry chef anyday, even a french chef with a little attitude, but not one that has horrid food and is not french. The parking is awful and it is obvious that they gained parking variances others would not get, based on biased politics. Please take me back to Za bars....

I have been looking for an authentic french bakery in Atlanta and this is it! My boyfriend surprised me with the chocolate truffle cake from Alon's on my birthday this month and I've been hooked since then. We've always passed by and wondered what Alon's is all about, I only regret that we didn't check it out sooner! It is designed like a long line, begin on the left of the shoppe with the viennoiseries and pick up some chocolate croissants, the best double chocolate cookies, and different breads, next is the pastries and coffee, then the salad and sandwiches, and finally the prepared to-go foods. On the opposite side are the cheeses, wines, and refrigerated cases of various drinks and to-go items with the cashiers at the right end of the bakery. It's packed at all hours of the day so get there early, the chocolate croissants and sandwich baguettes run out fast. They really do have the best sandwiches in Atlanta; my favorite is the tunisian tuna - not your average tuna salad at all. Instead of mayo, it's marinated with lemon juice and has capers, potatoes, hard boiled eggs, and preserved lemon all on a baguette with harissa. The coffee is good and strong and the cheese and wine selection is small but wide. Definitely a haven for the gourmet fanatic/foodie like myself.

Cons: very busy but the parking turnover is fast

I have been a fan and loyal customer of Alon's since day one. The pasteries are outstanding, especially the lemon bars. Don't forget the brownies, also. I usually start eating in my auto before I reach home. The roasted lamb sandwiche's are legendary. Beware, they are very busy, and just be patient. It's really worth it. Check-out the salads also.

I am a student pastry chef and have been to Alon's several times, its always very busy and overpriced for average tasting desserts. I was there a few weeks ago to write a report on the bakery. I had called Alon in advance to let him know that i was coming. He kept me waiting over and hour, passed by me several times and never once aknowledged that I was there and then went in the back and never came back out! He was too busy yelling at his employees to even notice anything/anyone else. He doesn't even have the common courtesy to say "this is a busy time, can you come back later". Thats all he had to say!
He needs to add one thing to his menu and eat a big helping of it....HUMBLE PIE!

This place is a absolute joke! The cakes are all the same and they have nooooo creativity! Jaconde is pretty much the idea for decorating and they are terrible at customer service. The owners are rude and racing around like crazy animals, poor staffing. The desserts are like a grocery store, almost worse, and the sandwiches are bland beyond bland! Absolutely nothing special, the presentation of everything is cheap and looks terrible.....don't go.

The food at alons is very good. I am quite fond of their albacore tuna sandwich with capers on baguette. The baked goods are always top notch, especially the cookies. However, be prepared for a confusing setup. There are no clear lines.. people just crowd at various parts of the long counter.. it's not quite clear if you are in the line for soup, sandwhiches, desserts, coffee, or to pay. The staff makes it quite clear that they can only get you what they have at their "station", so if you are getting more than one item.. you can have a long wait. The staff can be somewhat apathetic, I don't think they have actually been rude to me, but then they also don't go out of their way to be friendly Another treat besides the food at Alons is one of the owners who bears a striking resemblance to Alanis Morrissette. You really have to see her to believe it.

Unlike many of the reviewers, I have never had a problem with Alon's. In fact, I highly recommend this lunch spot! I'm a huge fan of the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken and the goat cheese sandwich. It tends to get extremely crowded, so I'd recommend going for a really early or really late lunch. The cookies are to die for-- don't skip dessert!!

Me and my family go to alons ever now and then to treat our selves with cookies or cake. Like the other review said, this place is a little bit pricey but they have good foods anyway. One thing that I also like from this place is thier soup. They have good soups especially when you visit them on winters. I higly recommend Alons place to all those who haven't been there yet.

I think Alon's is one of, if not the best bakery in Atlanta. I think i have eaten every pastry and danish they bake and I have never been disappointed. The sandwiches are great, fully loaded! The breads are wonderful. They are really busy all the time, so you have to be patient, but i never wait to be served, they have a large staff. Keep up the great work!

Alon's Bakery is legendary. Its rustic breads, its delicious pastries, and its drinks bring customers from miles around to this little store in Virginia Highlands. During lunch time, this place gets very crowded with people grabbing a sandwich or soup from the bakery, so get there early if you don't want to stand in line. Also, this is the perfect place to get a dessert cake or maybe even a birthday cake, if you've got money to spend. While their pastries may be expensive, they're worth every penny.

i went back to alons to try the cookies that i heard were so good. The guy working behind the counter could not even wait on the customer because of the The Manager or whoever she was that was in charge, was too busy barking out orders. I skipped the bakery and went for a sandwich. It was good but for almost $9 it better be. Alons is way overrated and over priced. The staff needs to help the customers not chase them away.

For the prices they charge here, a little bit of customer service should be in order.
Instead, they are routinely rude, surly, and basically unpleasant. While some of the desserts are really good, their soup is awful, and the last 2 sandwiches I've had were
the worst. I could chalk this up to bad menu choices on my part. But when you couple this with such terrible service, you can count me out.

I've never had a terrible experience here. Have always received polite and courteous service. I even ordered my wedding cake and it was the best, delicious and moist! I hunted down Alon's from Los Angeles after reading great reviews on Zagat. I was in Atlanta for the first time to spend Thanksgiving with my boyfriend's family. I dragged him and his mother to find Alon's and immediately we all fell in love with the place. I was disappointed they had no Heath Bar Brownies, but the Grueyre and the ginger scones are worth the trip alone! My boyfriend's mother lived in Atlanta 15 years without ever knowing about Alon's, but she's all into it now. We got a selection of desserts to share, the whole family loved it. Great place to grab lunch if you're in the area. It's not really a restaurant, it's a bakery/deli/wine shop/dessert place. There are only a couple places to sit, but grab lunch and go! And don't miss the scones.

I was told that Alons had the best cakes in Atlanta so when my parents were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary I decided to get their cake made at Alons. Thoughout the entire process I was treated rudey by the owners, the cake was not what I had ordered, and it was not prepared by the time it was supposed to be finished and was not delivered, even though I had paid for delivery. I had to drive 20 miles to pick the cake up myself. All in all it was a nightmare. The owners were never apologetic. After this experience I will not using Alons anymore and will not recommend this bakery to others.

I'm not sure what is awry with other peoples' recent experience with Alon's, but I have to say that I'm continually impressed every time I go! My husband and I often drop by on the way home from work to pick up a rosemary focaccia loaf or one of their tempting desserts. Their confections are a little high, but the craftsmanship really makes up for it.

There are a few items on the menu worth their price but most are not. The Challah bread is too dry and overpriced. The desserts are just ok, nothing to rave about and definately not worth the extremely high prices and hassle. Sandwiches don't taste fresh, and there's no place to sit down in Alon's to eat them. But on the bright side their coffee is pretty decent and they have a pretty good wine selection reasonably priced; the only thing at Alon's that's reasonably priced.

Everytime I have ever walked into this bakery I have been treated extremely rudely. Its too bad that the service is so poor in a place that makes some great food. When they get their act together and start treating their customers with respect then I might start patronizing Alon's again.

We drove from Dunwoody to Alon's to try out it's raved about deserts and sandwiches in the hopes of finding another exceptional bakery. The deserts looked delectable in their trays but after sampling our purchase, we were not impressed. The banana bread was the best out of the items we got, including Cappuccino Tort and the Opera Cake. Nothing beats La Madeleine for cafe offerings in our books as yet.

Alon's is a wonderful neighborhood bakery. I love their pastries & desserts (raspberry cheese danish, lemon bars, croissants). Their breads are good (but I prefer the Bread Garden in the Amsterdam Outlets). I have gotten good recommendations on cheese (but you can get them elsewhere for cheaper). I really like their sandwiches. My favs are the chicken pesto and the peppered turkey. I've also had excellent mushroom & lentil soup. On weekend mornings & around holidays the crowds can be overwhelming & supplies run out.

I have heard so many great things about Alons Bakery ever since I moved to Atlanta that I had to check the place out. But I honestly do not see what all the fuss is about. The cakes are pretty basic, mostly mousse cakes, and they are tiny! I ordered a lemon raspberry mousse cake with writing. The writing looked like someone scribbled a message at the last minute; it didn't look very professional at all. And considering the reputation and price of Alons I was expecting something much nicer. The cake itself tasted old as though it had been sitting in a cooler for days. There are better bakeries in Atlanta that give you better quality and value.

Alons is not good value for what you get. The desserts, though very lovely and artistic are just not worth the inflated prices. The Midnight Cake is something I could make myself, an 8 inch cake for $26 seems a bit expensive. And apple pies are $15. They are good, but they are not $15 good. The service is lacking, and the bakery is very cramped and overstocked with retail items. You feel like if you turn around you might break something. I've found the crowds, cramptness, and prices a bit too much to handle. Also a big negative for Alons is that there is no place to sit down.

Pros: cheese, wines, desserts

Cons: expensive, cramped, crowded

The cakes including the Midnight Cake was nothing special. And the BBQ Salmon sandwich was terrible. I was really disappointed with Alon's.

This is a fabulous bakery that has mastered both bread and desserts. All of the breads and desserts are outstanding, but the fruit tart is the best on the planet!

Alon's has been my favorite local bakery for years. Their sandwiches are divine (try the tuscany!)--perfect bread, wonderful combinations of vegetables, meats and cheeses. And no other Atlanta bakery has desserts that compare--from cookies to tortes, Alon's makes the best I've tasted.

This place definitely has the best dessert. I went here with a group of my friends. We all got something different and split it. Everything was superb! The appearance of the desserts was even better!

I live in Gwinnett, but have to drive down to Alon's now and then to get cookies. I crave the double chocolate chip! They are pricey, but worth every penny. The croissants are good, too.

Alons sweets are close to religion in Atlanta. But the sandwiches are worth a trip, too. Try the Tuscany or the Asian Barbecued Salmon--and wash it down with a double chocolate chunk cookie.

The cookies and pastries really are just about the best in town. Every time I come in, even if it's just for sandwiches (which are delicious, by the way) or a loaf of bread, I never walk out without something sweet, which I proceed to eat right on the spot. The double chocolate chunk cookies are utterly sinful.
