I live in Andersonville and have always gone to the Jewel store on Catalpa and Clark. Recently I went to our local small video store and decided to go to Edgewater Produce (next door) instead. The place reminds me totally of a New York bodega but much better than the ones I have gone to there.
Tons of fresh produce, a good selection of boxed items, GREAT dairy and meat selections. The prices are AMAZING. You'd think you'd pay so much more at a small local store, but you really don't. Everything was cheaper, with the exception of the soy milk which was the same price I always pay at Jewel. The place was clean and the employees were totally helpful.
Forget big grocery stores, I'm only going here from now on. The only things I probably couldnt get here are non-grocery items like a Swiffer Duster or something. I love this place and I love being able to do more local shopping and supporting.

Pros: Cheap prices, get to shop local, more helpful people, much better produce and selection
Cons: Smaller store but really still everything you'd want.
Edgewater Produce on Chicago's North Side is mainly known as a Mexican ethnic grocery store, but the big secret is that they have excellent fresh produce at some of the best prices in the city. They frequently run specials, such as a dozen limes for a dollar, or two pounds of peaches for a dollar. The quality is comparable to what you'd find at your local farmer's market -- very good! They also have a nice meat section, and of course their selection of Mexican specialty foods can't be beat.

If parking were easier to find in this area and there wasn't so much traffic out here, I would do all my grocery shopping here. They have really fresh produce and everything is so cheap!! It can get crowded here but they are well-staffed and the check-out lines are never too long. Definitely make a stop in here if you get a chance for some great groceries at great prices too.
