It was the first time for me in Allston and my friends took me to this joint.
Now, if your preferred drink/food combination is burger and beer you have come to the right place.
The first thing I noticed was the incredible beer selection.

This is my favorite American food restaurant. The beer menu is the most extensive I have ever seen in Boston. The staff are friendly, the place is always crowded. The food portions are large and it does not take a long time to come out. I love this place and I recommend its sister- Sunset Cantina down the street.

I've been to Sunset a number of times. Their beer burger is amazing and won't disappoint anyone. My friends and I tried it at the same time and we were all impressed. Their beer on tap options are second-to-none. If you want a burger and a beer, go to Sunset. My only problem would be the restaurant itself. It's a bar-restaurant so don't expect ultra-nice or clean facilities.

An Allston mecca and staple, Sunset Grill & Tap is truly a beer drinker's delight. The beer menu is positively overwhelming (a pamplet with several double-sided pages, all crammed together in six-point font). The servers, however, will give you suggestions if you let them know what you're eating and what your preferences are. But don??t let that dissuade you. This is a place to be adventurous. Your palate will thank you. There are even beer flights for those of you who just can??t seem to make up your mind.

In terms of food, you can??t go wrong with their monstrous nachos or a burger. They steam the burgers in beer and offer all manner of ridiculous toppings and combinations. Again, get a little crazy ?? it??s well worth it.

Service can be spotty (I??ve had amazing servers and downright stank servers) but its Allston so that is to be expected. Get here. Now.

This is the place you want to go if you're not sure what you want to eat bascially becuase it has a HUGE menu (both food and beer) and you're bound to find just the thing you're looking for! Its a pretty big place, but it does get packed. One of my favorites is the Tuna Melt sandwich or the Sizzling Fajitas. Not to mention they have over 200 beers on tap. That's right...I said TAP. Its a pretty fun place to unwind on a Friday after a long week of work.

Gotta love Sunset's! I'd been going to Cantina when I lived closer to BU campus, but now that I'm off-campus it made sense to frequent Grill & Tap now. The amount of beers they have is INCREDIBLE. Literally, anything you can think of, they have. They also have great specials on pints and larger, and towers! The food is hands-down delicious - the nachos are a staple, but don't try to take a full-size portion on by yourself...! The boneless buffalo wings are pretty good, as are the quesedillas and the salads. Burgers and onion rings here are the best hangover remedy! Expect to spend between $10 and $15, depending on what you eat/drink.

I lived in Brookline for 2 years, and this was my go-to place for awesome food. A huge array of food items on the menu, an incredible beer selection, and the best steam beer burgers ever!

I have been to Sunset a few times for drinks - always a good selection of beer as they are known for and a good crowd. I recently ordered food and was pleasantly surprised, for a bar, the food was good quality and prepared nicely. Would definitely recommend Sunset for both drinks and DINNER!

With possibly the most beers on tap in the area, this place is phenomenal. The food is top notch and service is generally great. One of my favorite things on the beer menu is the flight option where you get four 5oz. beers in the same family (pumpkin patch, stout). It's a great way to sample while still knowing it's something you'll like.

As many other reviewers have made note of, the place has a good selection of about 100 beers on tap. So you won't find it easy to make a selection. I go here most often with buddies to watch sports. The venue is a little more low-key than your average Allston hang-out, so come here to sit back and actually enjoy watching the game--as opposed to watching your back. Also, the food, if your wallet can handle it, is very good.

This bar is your perfect neighborhood bar but not in any ordinary kind of way...The combination of many good things comes together nicely every time...The beer list is extensive and international, the food is surprisingly high qualty and the bartenders truly know their stuff when it comes to beers and making good recommendations, even depending on your mood. You just feel comfortable when you walk in, there's a lively atmosphere with lots on the walls and tvs placed high and discretely showing the main game of the day without overkill...The bar has 2 nicely-spread-out levels so it's rarely hard to find a seat (except let's face it on a peak Sat. pm, then you just get a table!). You can go with 2 friends or 10, or even alone to chill after along day at work, and you'll always walk out happier, or at least, a little more relaxed to face the craziness of the world outside!

Im originally from outside of Boston, but now go to college in Connecticut. I therefore feel its important to make the most of my trips to the city, and this usually includes a trip to Sunset. Everytime I've been there's space for me and some friends at the bar, the bartenders are friendly, the beer selection is AMAZING, and the food (although not exceptional) is well priced for Boston. The staff there is knowledgable and were great helpin me choose some microbrews that fit my tastes (personally a Lager guy). The Atmosphere there is really upbeat, and comfortable. I would say the only downsides are that they close fairly early and that parking is tough to come by on weekends. But the hike is worth it if you are looking for a place with good beer, good people, and a great atmosphere.

They have great bar food and one of the best beer selections I have ever seen. The draft beers are well kept and they have a choice from all over the country and abroad. Nice friendly atmosphere from staff and customers alike. The barstaff has excellent knowledge of the beers to recommend, especially the guy with the goatee.

Waited an hour and a a half to be seated, meals took 45 minutes to come out of the kitchen, a meal was spilt over one of the party, and no apology made. That meal took another 15 minutes to come out of the kitchen, waited 25 minutes for our bill, while our waitress started closing up. she was rude when we mentioned the bill again. Food average and such poor service, dont go there

I frequented Sunset back in the 90s. Less people, great staff, more locals and best selection and quantity of drafts than any other bar in Boston. Then word got out and the Sunset turned more into an amusement park making every effort to bring in the tourists and transient residents of Allston/Brighton.

Still a good place to grab a great microbrew but you have to go offpeak otherwise be ready to drink with the college kids sipping on their yards as a novelty or the many tourists.

I frequent sunset quite often. The food is great, standard American. The chili sampler is the BEST deal. All entrees have ample food, so consider sharing. The best thing about sunset is the beer selection. The menu can be overwhelming, but servers and bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable about the beers. The beers on tap change frequently, too. There is no chance of getting bored. My only complaint would be the service when the place is busy. We waited a looong time for our drinks.

While I agree that Sunset has a fantastic beer selection, and the food is delicious, the service is HORRIBLE. Mind you, my roomates and myself continue to go there frequently, so its not enough to deter us but we had a really bad experience this week when we sat at the bar and the manager was covering the bar while the bartender went to change a keg for 20 minutes. It took her 20 minutes to even take our drink order, then our wings we ordered came out and we still didnt have our drinks. Finally the actual bartender came back and got us our drinks and it had already been a half an hour. Luckily we weren't in a rush. I love the food and beer here, but I just wanted to warn everyone that the service is the worst I've ever experienced...ever.

My FAVORITE place to eat because of their wide variety of beer and delicious burgers. My roommates always go with other menu items, I've been to Sunset more times than I can remember and every time I go (except twice) I get the Texan Burger, which never ceases to please my taste buds. You cannot find a better deal and no matter what night you go its always lively with plenty of TVs and decorations on the wall to keep you occupied while you wait for your Flight of beers. The flight is something they offer to taste 4 different beers. How it works is you pick 4 beers from their long list of draft beers and they give you each of the beers in a 5 ounce glass. It's perfect if you want to try new things but not get stuck drinking 12+ ounces of something you don't like. I LOVE Sunset and I've lived in Brighton for almost a year and half. My roommates and I make it a habit to eat there at least once a week...that's how good it is....

My girlfriend and I decided to try this place after I had seen it featured in the TV Show "Beer Nuts". I consider myself semi-snobbish when it comes to beer, so I was excited to try it. We show up and according to the gf my face lit up like a kid in a candy store. I found Beer Mecca. It was a Sunday evening and we had no problems getting a table. With over 100 beers on tap, the choices seemed overwhelming at first. I decided to try a Paulaner Hefeweizen (my first true GERMAN Hefe) and fell instantly in love. She tried some kind of Raspberry beer that was also quite tasty. I had fish & chips cajun style with curly fries and cranberry coleslaw, all of which were delicious. Her quesadillas were pretty good too. The menu seems quite varied, as I was only expecting pizza and burgers, but they have everything from gourmet pizza to burritos to steak. The decor is definitely geared towards the beer theme, but still looked clean and attractive. The staff were friendly and prompt and the food came quickly. Overall, it was a great experience and definitely worth the $35 for dinner + drinks. I'll be going back again.

Sunset Grill and Tap offers an overwheliming selection of beers. They literally have hundreds of beers on tap. The food is your standard bar food. It's a great place to meet up with friends.

I went here with friends, and we were seated promptly on a Saturday night. Our waitress was very slow, but not terrible. At one point, she took drink orders, came back 20 minutes later and told us our selections weren't available. The food wasn't great. The biggest disappointment was the management. We were seated next to the door to the adjoining bar, which was propped open so their customers could be tempted by the bar after dining in the restaurant. However, this left us FREEZING (I don't even understand why the BAR was so cold), and everytime we asked the bartender, waitress, and manager if they could close it, they said no. We eventually got really upset (I was SHIVERING wearing 2 bulky coats) and confronted the manager again. He was INCREDIBLY RUDE, gave some lame excuse why the door had to be open, then huffed away. Won't return there!

This is my favorite bar/ grill in Boston, if not the world. The burgers and apps are excellent, they have 100+ beers on tap including 2 or more kinds of chocolate stout, and they have very good commercially available mudpie (that used to be the best until some bar on 82nd and 2nd in NYC started selling little, indivual ones). Anyway, still aa good place, and it'll always be both the root of inclusion of Guiness in mudpie crust and an advocate of IP sharing.

I just went here for the first time last week, after living in Boston for 2 years. I'm furious that I wasted those 2 years not coming here! The food is unbelievable, one of the best burgers I've ever had, maybe THE best. Great appetizers and everything else too. Prices are great. Oh, and by the way, 112 beers on tap and 400 more in bottles. You're crazy if that doesn't do it for you.

I've been here a few times, and all I remember was how much I enjoyed their portabello mushroom burger and fries. They have a good selection for vegetarians, great drinks, and a cool atmosphere for hanging with your friends. Good prices, and all-around good service from what I recall. Try the portabello mushroom burger!

Beer sampling made easy with Beer Flights.
Able to find some new favorites.
Bar food is along the same with all places, though wings could have been cooked longer.
No problem gettting a table, service was friendly and knowledgable but in the weeds from the moment we sat down. Volumn of place went up as the chatty Kathys startup liquoring up.
Good starting point for a night out with friends.

Boasting the largest beer selection and one of the largest food menus in New England, the Sunset Grill is Allstons best spot for casual dining.

Spicy Mexican selections (try the quesadillas, which are jam packed with meat and veggies) and traditional American fare (all-you-can-eat ribs on Monday and Tuesday nights!) are their specialties. The salads are fresh and filling and the steamed beer burgers are thick, juicy and cooked to order (yes, even rare) and come with pretty much anything youd want to put on them; get one with their fantastic onion rings for a substantial meal.

Whatever you get, make sure you wash it all down with a few glasses of your favorite selection from the massive beer menu. And if you have trouble deciding, your waiter can help you choose; these kids know their hops.

The service can be slow, and the wait gets a little long during peak hours of course, but its worth your time on both accounts. Grab a beeper, sidle up to the bar and get a head start on the liquid portion of your meal. Just don't order a Jack and Coke - they don't have a hard liquor license, so it's beer only!

PROS: Great food, lots of rare beers
CONS: No hard liqour, long dinner wait on the weekends

The service can be slow, and the wait gets a little long during peak hours of course, but its worth your time on both accounts. Grab a beeper, sidle up to the bar and get a head start on the liquid portion of your meal. Just don't order a Jack and Coke - they don't have a hard liquor license, so it's beer only!

PROS: Great food, lots of rare beers
CONS: No hard liqour, long dinner wait on the weekends

I was hosting 5 friends from out of town, took them to Sunset, and we were all blown away by how great it was. Amazing beer selection, delicious food, great service, and all in all pretty affordable. My only complaint was that it was quite crowded, and the one-stall bathroom made for a bit of a wait. But regardless, you know I'll be back again!

Pros: Inexpensive, Tons of beers, Yummy food

Cons: Crowded, Loud, Long line for bathroo

First of all, this place offers an astonishing amount of beers on tap. Any one who enjoys good beer will admit that most times it is better on tap rather than in a bottle. This pub boasts a huge amount of tapped beers and excellent food to match. The burgers are big and filling, but leave plenty of room for the beer! In a land where boring bars charge entrance fees and feature the worst of what the local colleges have to offer, the Sunset is a gem!

Cons: too many people, too many choices, overeating

I went to Sunset expecting to find the largest selection of tap beer in the area (over 110 taps!, what a sight). I wasn't dissapointed. Not only did they have Arrogant Bastard on tap (a beer from California, be wary - not for everyone), they had really good food too. All the standard bar food, like nachos, wings, and spinach and artichoke dip are available (nachos are GIGANTIC), there are also a lot of entree selections. Steak tips are out of this world, and the quesadillas are great. I had great service, even though I went in on a Friday night one time when they were really busy. The food came out quickly, and with so many beers to choose from, I didn't so much walk out of there as stumble. Overall, a great place to go out with friends, or take a date (beer is a great conversation starter).

Pros: great service, lots of beer, many great food items

Cons: no parking, a little loud in area, only 2 bathrooms

Between the beer selections and the great Nachos, you can't go wrong at Sunset. They have something there for everyone. If you're feeling adventurous, definitely go for a yard or 1/2 yard of your favorite beer. Good thing the B line is close by!

This place is easily one of the most enjoyable dining experiences in Boston. The food is good and hot. The beers are plentiful and the crowd is pleasant. There are a good amount of TV's if you're inclined to watch a game, but most are near the bar. This place is not that expensive, but for a burger, fries and a few beers might run you about $20. I always take friends here and they love it!

Sunset grill Makes the best "Steam" Burgers, Period. They cook them the way you want, not the way that they do like a lot of places. Plus as a added bonus to the great food (it is all great) They have 129 taps and a few hundred different bottles of BEER

This is a great place to grab a burger and beer. The wait staff is always helpful in suggesting beers, and they usually have seasonal ones that are worth trying. I've never had a bad meal here, but it's not fancy dining. A great place to kickback with a few friends and have a meal and a drink.

Pros: Amazing beer list, Great waitstaff

Cons: "plebian" food

Create a "steam burger" masterpiece here with tons of toppings (try the boursin cheese) and top-notch curly fries. The number of burger accoutrements is exceeded only by the number of beers available. Beware, though; it's insanely crowded on weekends, not especially easy to get to via public transportation, and parking is sparse. The service has been spotty the last few times I've gone.

Our waiter was very helpful in suggesting which brews we should try. And the beer menu changes every 2 weeks, so there's always a reason to come back! A must for those in search of hard-to-find or unusual beers.

A humungous variety of beer in bottles and on tap and the beer on tap is always fresh. The food is amazing. The chef always has creative twist on classics that are fun and very tasty. And the specials are always awesome (if a bit pricey). The perfect place to go before a game or with a group of friends.

Sunset Grill is a great place! The service is great, and the food is excellent. I love the "Allston Village" burger/sandwhich choice.

For beer, this is the place...impossible to not find one you like! But don't go so far as to eat here...unless you've tasted so many fine brews that your tastebuds are out for the count. I admit myself, I like the food when I've downed two or three, but on a sober night you'll realize the food is mostly doused in oil and hastily prepared. The service industry has seen better days too! I think the owner should slow down on the expansions of his business and pay more attention to what's going on inside!

This place has more beers on tap than most places can shake a stick at. The food is good, but the attraction has to be the taps. They have well over a hundred. The entire wall behind the bar is covered with taps. The food is good and the menu offers a little bit of everything.

First off, so much beer it could make you cry! Also the food is great and tasty bar food. Try the burgers (or turkey burgers for those watching their wasitline); these are the cheaper, and better, items on the menu!

If you're into variety, then this is the place for you. It has a huge food AND drink menu. On the other hand, if you have a hard time making up your mind, you may find it hard to order...The food here is great and it's in a great location (if you're into the Allston/Brighton college scene). Also, the prices aren't bad either. The only thing is that the service is not great and it gets pretty crowded and noisy on weekend nights (like almost all restaurants). It's one of those places that you have to be in the mood for.

If you are looking for a place for Lunch, this is it. Awesome Steak Tips for $5.95 (Mon-Fri), so much that you can hardly finish them actually. And if you go for lunch it is quiet enough for you to honestly look over the 150 beers that are on tap and pick one out that you think you will enjoy(not to mention 300 other selections by the bottle). If you go to eat there at night, do it downstairs, the upstairs pub gets too crowded to enjoy your meal.

If you're looking for beer of all types and from every place, look no further. They serve a great selection of beer and amazingly enough at appropriate temperatures! You won't find any bitter's in a frosty mug here! Unfortunately they've become far less adventurous in their tap selection over the years, but the Sunset still ranks up there with 110+ taps, 300+ bottles and great bar food.
