After years of hearing wonderful reports on Peddler's Steakhousef, and with the kids out house for the night, my husband and I headed there for dinner. The decor is very outdated. The carpet is worn and in desperate need of replacing. The chairrails are dinged and chipped. As for the food, the steak was very good. I had the primerib and my husband had a custom-cut ribeye. Both were cooked to perfection... however that's the only thing I enjoyed about the meal. The onion ring appetizer was flavorless and about the quality you can find in your grocer's freezer. The salad bar was self-serve. OK, it you like that sort of thing. The garlic bread served with the meal was pointless and not much different than your basic toaster oven garlic bread. Lastly, when my husband asked for chives for his baked potato what he got was a dish full of the lovely dried chives you buy in bulk from any warehouse club. Very sad. If all you want is good meat - by all means head to Peddler's. If you want a little more for the $100 you're going to spend, head to Angus Barn.

We had a great experience here. Loved the classic steakhouse look and received excellent service. The steaks were perfectly done and seasoned just right.Definatly not a chain restaurant experience. Prices were appropriate and the portions were perfect for us. We felt that the place was clean and well maintained as well which is what I usually look at first. I definately reccomend this to anyone looking for a quiet, inviting, and pleasant dinning out experience.

""Yes"" i have to say steak was very good but place maybe needs make over or at least change the carpet. This place is not for romantic evening or a date, but for couple of friends to have good steak and beer... why not.

For years I've heard nothing but good things about this restaurant, so I finally drove about an hour to try it. While waiting at the bar, I ordered the Pineapple Upside Down Martini which was wonderful. Once seated, I ordered the Petite Filet & my husband ordered the NY Strip. The salad bar was good, but nothing to brag about. It was just a salad bar! Once our dinner was served I noticed my filet was cut into almost three pieces (almost like medallions, but still connected on one side.) I asked our waitress if that was how they served filets since this was our first visit & she said that it was a ""mushroom cut"" and that it probably came off the end of the loin. I sent it back & ate my crinkle cut fries while they cooked another steak. My husband's NY strip was okay. He felt it was overpriced for the quality. Once I got my steak I couldn't help but agree with him. I wanted so much for this restaurant to ""wow "" me since I'd heard so many good things, but I really felt like I had just eaten at Outback and paid Ruth's Chris prices! Our waitress was very nice & accommodating and we did receive good service throughout the evening. At least we can say we tried it, but we probably won't go back unless someone else suggests it.

I have been to Angus Barn plenty of times, but I think Peddler does a far better steak. Also, I prefer the ambiance of Peddler to Angus Barn. Yes, it's small and quiet, but that's why we enjoy it! The salad bar is excellent, and my father (a vegetarian) will often accompany us and raves about the salad bar! \n\nOverall, it's a steakhouse devoted to a nostalgic era. I think bringing the check up to front is kind of cool! As for the swinging doors and small bar, we sat one time in front of those doors and we never noticed it! I think it adds to its ambiance. \n\nYou just can't beat their filets! \n\nI have to add something because I just read the review by someone who went with a gluten allergy. My niece has a severe gluten allergy as does my mother. I know from experience that you can not show up a restaurant and expect to accommodate a gluten free diet because you have to actually have TWO different grills. Both my sister and mother call BEFORE to ensure they can accommodate their diet restrictions, as most can not. To show up and expect the cooks to clean the grill to make your steaks doesn't seem reasonable, and it's also not efficient enough to prevent contamination. When my mother visits, we only go to places that advertise they have a gluten free menu, as they have the separate grill.

My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner tonight at the Peddler (our first visit) and we could not have been more pleased. Our waitress was top-notch and very attentive. The food was absolutely wonderful. We both had the filet mignon which was cooked to perfection and the salad bar had everything you could possibly want. They kept it very well stocked at all times. The bread was the only item that wasn't absolutely stellar... it was just okay, but really, we were there to enjoy the steak. \r\nAs some of the other reviews mentioned, the decor is outdated and you do have to bring your check to the front, however the food and service far outweigh this. We will make this a regular stop for future celebrations.

We recently went here for our anniversary, having never set foot in the door. We had a couple of positive recommendations, almost entirely from the parents or grandparents of friends. \n\nThe Peddler certainly does a good steak - I had a filet, and my husband had the prime rib. But almost every other element to the dining experience was mediocre... or a little strange.\n\nThis is a small, aged venue. The low light was nice, but looking up offers a view of a dingy dropped ceiling. It was fairly quiet, which would have provided intimacy, had we not been sat at a table directly beside the loud, swinging, saloon-style doors to the meager bar.\n\nThe little salad bar had a few unexpected items that were a plus. But what we ended up eating from it wasn't very good. The basic salad fare was weak and kind of unsavory.\n\nThere is an absolute oddity to having a ramekin of sour cream, and one of butter, set on your table before your drinks even come. Is the kitchen assuming that every customer will be ordering a baked potato? \n\nThe bread wasn't delivered until the entrees came, and it was disappointing. A few grilled slices of bland Italian bread that ended up tasting remarkably like hot dog buns.\n\nThe steaks, again, were good, and priced decently. We recommend ordering it on the higher end of done, as there was a lot of blood on our plates at 'medium'. \n\nThe service we had was helpful and friendly, and the dessert was actually one of the best tasting things we sampled. \n\nAll in all, not a bad choice if someone is local and mostly looking for a better-than-chain steak. Unless one has a history of visiting (and therefore an attachment to) The Peddler, this is not a place we would recommend for special occasions. \n\nWe both agree that paying the extra money to slip down the road to The Angus Barn is a more rewarding choice.

There's certainly a reason why this restaurant has been in business for as long as it has; good quality, good prices, good service. \r\n\r\nThe salad bar, which is included with most every meal, is my favorite in town; expansive and somewhat exotic choices like fried oysters, artichoke hearts, real bacon and homemade salad dressings are worth your time. \r\n\r\nI've tried almost every cut of meat and type of fish that the restaurant offers, and I have been delightfully impressed with each and every meal I've ever eaten there. The filet melts in your mouth, the prime rib is juicy and flavorful and the tuna steaks are cooked to perfection. I always want more of the grilled bread that comes with the meal. \r\n\r\nIf you're a fan of a girly cocktail, DO NOT overlook the pineapple upside-down martini. Designed with love by the legendary Joyce Barefoot (co-owner), this is easily my favorite drink. Ever. \r\n\r\nFor a memorable Thursday evening out, grab some dinner at the Peddler and then hit O'Malley's right up the hill for some non-judgmental and always hysterical karaoke. \r\n\r\nThe Peddler far outshines the chain steakhouses with its unbeatable customer service, reliable ambience, and high quality product. I, for one, would never dream of paying to eat at the Angus Barn of Ruth's Chris when you can find the same high quality for a much more reasonable price.

Cooking a Good Steak is not a Big Deal, just about anyone can do it with a good cut of meat. \n\nWe made our first visit to Peddler's this past week as a group of 10, to celebrate my In-Law's 50th Anniversary.\n\nThe first thing I noticed while being ushered to a back room was that the place smelled like an old Diesel Submarine (really). And I didn't think that the building was that old. Thought maybe it had been heated with fuel-oil at one time.\n\nThe interior was drab at best...in dire need of a major remodel. Happened to pass who was probably the owner on the way back, standing in the doorway with a big cigar in his fingers, and a waitress reminding him that he couldn't have that in here (probably why the place stinks!\n\nThe waitress was pleasant, but given too many tables, preventing her from managing ours properly. Lots of dirty dishes and crumbs left on the table between courses.\n\nOverall... just kind of blah....

This is one of Raleigh's older and more established restaurants that has been around for some time now. The decor is a bit outdated, however they serve a DECENT steak if you are looking for a change of the chain choice-grade steakhouse (Texas Roadhouse/Longhorn, Outback, etc.).\r\n\r\n\r\nThe peddler will come around to your table, show you the cuts of steak that are available and carve it right there for you. Then they'll take it and cook it on a small grill which is (thankfully) open to the dining area.\r\n\r\n\r\nYeah, so don't come here is you have Celiac Disease or any other food allergy. What was to be a ""special"" meal for my girlfriend and I turned into a terrible night.\r\n\r\n\r\nWe ordered our steaks and pointed out that we had a food allergy to Gluten. The waitress kind of looked at me funny, so I repeated and said that we were ""allergic to bread"". The clueless look on her face was an alarm.\r\n\r\n\r\nOn our second round of drinks, I actually pulled the waiter (who wasn't our waitress) aside and re-iterated that we had a food allergy to Gluten/bread and I asked that he communicate this to the person working the grill.\r\n\r\n\r\n(I pointed this out again because I noticed grill marks on some bread on the plate of a customer seated next to us.)\r\n\r\n\r\nThe waiter then went back and huddled with the grill master, another waiter and waitress (the kitchen is open) and then I guess realized that they needed to clean the grill.\r\n\r\n\r\nWell our steaks were already on, so they had to throw them away, properly clean the grill and start them back up again.\r\n\r\n\r\nAfter we were done with our meal, the kitchen manager ( a guy in his 50s/60s wearing dirty glasses) proceeded to come to our table and remind us that next time we need to let the know of our food allergies ahead of time, because they had to discard the first set of steaks. His voice was filled with bitterness and I swear he sounded just like Boomhauer from King of the Hill.\r\n\r\n\r\nI then reminded this redneck that I told two different people, one our waitress who took our order and second a waiter who delivered our drinks of the allergy. My poor girlfriend by this time had uncomfortably scowered down into her seat. I then made the point that he needs to make sure his waitstaff properly relays food allergies to the kitchen going forward.\r\n\r\n\r\nBefore I could finish, he immediately turned and walked away. This had to be the most uncomfortable I have ever felt at a restaurant in my life....and the first time I didn't leave a tip too.\r\n\r\n\r\nNot only was this place dangerous in their food preparation, the classless kitchen manager actually confonted us as if we did something wrong! What a coward.\r\n\r\n\r\nAvoid this place at all costs if you have a food allergy, care about ambiance or care about customer service.

Its Valentine's Day and my expectations are just so so. As a midwesterner, I find it very sad that noone knows how to prepare prime rib. After searching for 23 years for a half way descent prime rib, my search is over. The Peddler's prime rib was excellent, along with the service, atmosphere and fresh salad bar. Even though I live in Chapel Hill...the ride into Raleigh to eat at this restaurant is worth the trip!

This is a Raleigh landmark. It's one of the few places where you get to see the beef before it's cooked and you get to chose how big you want it. The service is great. The salad bar is small but really did you come here for the salad?

The Peddler is a long time family favorite. We have been there for lots of special occasions and enjoyed many, many dinners for years. We always find the food and service to be superb. Love...Love... the fresh, choices of salad makings on the bar and the steaks are tender and full of flavor. Time to time, we try the new places that pop up, some are good and some are not, but we always find our favorite is still The Peddler. Some things never change, because they don't need too. The Peddler is a winner.

Quality for the dollar. You can pay more, but you don't get any better steaks. It is the best food without all the silly decorations trying to make it look like something it is not. It is just simply delicious.

My first visit to The Peddler was with a date and was the perfect place for a quiet, relaxing evening. It took a while to be seated, which was a hint this would be worth the wait. We were seated at a cozy table in the corner, with linen tablecloths and napkins (what a treat these days) and perfect candlight setting. Our waitress arrived promptly for our drink orders. She was very professional without being too chatty and actually seemed to enjoy her job! We choose to have the Peddler come to our table to show us the steaks and actually cut them there. (Imagine getting to see you food before it is prepared!) I ordered the NY Strip and my date the Prime Rib. The trip to the salad bar was a test of control as there is so much to choose from. Holding back to save room for the main course is difficult. Just as we put down our salad forks, the plates were quickly removed and the steaks delivered promptly. Perfect timing! The NY Strip was cooked to perfection, perfectly seasoned and certainly one of the best I have had. My date offered me a taste of his Prime Rib and from the first mouth watering bite.... I was hooked! The Prime Rib I am used to is usually fatty and over seasoned and not my choice of steaks. This one was out of this world! The most tender meat, with only a small trim of fat (which I like!) and au jus with the perfect consistency and flavoring. Since this was my date's steak and not mine, I had to return to my own steak which was still a excellent choice. I came back to The Peddler a week later for my own Prime Rib, this time with my 11 year old daughter. She ordered a child's steak, which she commented was wonderful, then of course tasted my Prime Rib. Bad move...she wanted more! My daughter and I now visit The Peddler every month or so for our Prime Rib dinner. I highly recommend this resturant for its professional and friendly staff, excellent atmosphere for family or romantic evening, awesome food and worth the price and wait!

My first visit to The Peddler was with a date and was the perfect place for a quiet, relaxing evening. It took a while to be seated, which was a hint this would be worth the wait. The Peddler is a wonderful relaxed atmosphere and serves the best grilled steaks and seafood. The ribeye and New York Strip can be cut at your table upon request. That is a unique experience if you plan to order the ribeye or strip. I plan to order ribeye and request it cut at my table until it is time to do so and then change my mind and I go back for the delicious grilled tuna or grilled salmon that may be ordered from the server.(and so may any other menu item if you don't request the cutter at the table.) We also enjoy the Prime Rib. It is the best in the area. Servings are large and devine.\r\n\r\nService is always excellent. I love the warm, friendly, personal attention. Everyone is pleasant and eager to please. \r\n\r\nThe salad bar is to die for....... always fresh cut vegetables and gourmet additions for the best salad your imagination can make. Love, Love, Love to feast at this salad bar.\r\n\r\nIt is of excellent quality and reasonable prices. A great evening out for a date or to dine with friends.\r\n\r\nI have attended numerous celebrations in the private dining room with large groups and found the same great food and excellent service provided in that setting.\r\n\r\nMy favorite for almost 40 years. Hats off to 40 years, that is remarkable.

Cons: reservations may be made for large groups only, sometimes there is a wait for a table

We had read a lot of great reviews about Peddler Steak House so we thought we'd give it a go. We were there promptly around 5:00 pm so when we walked in we were seated without any wait. The decor of the Peddler Steak House appears to be the same as it was 30 years ago, paneling and dark wood with royal blue accents and matching blue carpet. It was dimly lit and had a nice warm atmosphere. The service was wonderful, our beverages never got to below half empty. We ordered an appetizer, which was the fried cheese, basically it was mozzarella sticks with a marinara sauce, not worth ordering before a steak meal, and you could get the same thing with the same flavor at Applebee?s. The salad bar was great; all of the items seemed very crisp and fresh. We ordered a large cut of Prime Rib. We should have stuck with the regular cut. It came out on a large plate bedded in its own juices. It was the largest thickest cut of steak I?ve ever had or seen. When I cut into it and had my first taste this is what went through my mind, there was no flavor? It was unseasoned, it was just cooked and served in its own natural flavors so no marinades or seasons that I could taste. As I was working my way through this steak, I found that I wasn?t actually enjoying the steak as a whole as much as it became a contest to simply finish it. So anyway, the meal for two was $66.00? When we both left the restaurant and started our drive home we were sort of dumbfounded that we had paid so much for this steak meal? I mean we couldn?t actually justify its value; it was just a thick cut of steak, nothing special bout a thick cut of meat? We could have eaten at the Angus barn for $20 more and had a much better steak. I am very disappointed. So in short if you don?t mind a steak that isn?t salted, flavored, or seasoned in anyway, then this is the place? If you like a steak over flowing with flavor, then you should go elsewhere?

There are alot more places in Raleigh to spend $80.00 for 2 people. Mediocre at best, their steak is good not great, their service is not good at best, the building reminds me of an 1980's apartment and smells like the carpet has been wet before. The guy that comes around to show the ""fine"" cuts of meat is straight out of a college fraternity, trust me if you want a consistently good steak go ""Austrailian"" instead. This place will be out of business within a few years.

I have been to The Peddler several times over the years and have had nothing short of a magical experiance every time I go. The service is always good but the food out of this world. The salad bar is awesome and the steak phenominal. I just love the old school feel of the place, nothing too trendy, just how you imagine a steakhouse should be. It seems like the same people have owned it forever and I always see them there. I like that family owned aspect in a restaurant. This place is a can't miss for anyone in the Raleigh area- it seems like a local landmark. It can get busy on the weekends but still worth the wait!

One of my wife's and I favorite restaurants. We cant afford to go often, be we go when we can. Great steaks and an awesome salad bar.\r\n\r\nWe arrived about 7.25 on 01/27/06. We waited until 8:28pm to get a table. Its the only restaurant I would wait this long for. We waited that long, with no chairs available, finally my wife found a seat. We had to ask for a glass of water for her. It would be nice to have a water fountain or something in the waiting area.\r\n\r\nWe have had better service than we had this time. Our waitress seemed in a hurry, she got my wife's order wrong, she abandoned us for a long period of time and made no offer of any adjustment for her error on my wife's order. We waited so long for the check, that we gave up hope for a dessert. \r\n\r\n

The food was really great but the customer service could have been better. After all, you go out to dinner to be pampered and waited on. First off we tried to make reservations and they would not take them, then instead of the original three diners, there were now five of us. Two were running late and we had to sit in the waiting area for 20 minutes until they arrived. That's just plain silly. If they were smart, they would have seated us and served us appetizers and drinks. Cha-ching...HELLO! No. Rules are rules. We were not offered a beverage while we waited and were not even told that there was a bar area to wait in. Finally we are seated. The service was prompt, the gals ordered drinks and we had at the salad bar. This salad bar was very impressive. Next two men came out and explained their beef selections, which is New York Strip, Rib Eye and Prime Rib (plus there are other items on the menu). Four diners chose the Rib Eye 10 oz cuts and they were cut to order at the table. Personally, I didn't think they were well marbled enough and so I chose the Prime Rib. Then one of the diners had a chip in her wine glass and almost cut her lip on it. It was difficult to get the server's attention and the problem resolved. And then there was no apology or compensation for the problem. The food was served soon after and my Prime Rib was awesome. The other diners said theirs was good. The ambience was very nice, and that of a New York-style steakhouse with low lighting, candles, wood tables and an open grilling area. And yes, there was a bar tucked away on the front side of the building. The Peddler would make a nice romantic dining spot. All in all, I would say that it was a nice time with some irritating moments. I would probably go back in the future but I would not make it tops on my list for customer service. The Social Light

I loved this place. My fiance, now husband, took me there on a date and we go there often now. It is a place I like to take my parents when they visit from NY. It is a nice low key atmosphere. Intimate, a bit dark, but adds to the experience. I like it also because you do not need reservations and can get there as they open (at 5:30 during the week) and get right in with no problems. Food and service are great as is the salad bar.

My new favorite steakhouse! The Peddler comes to your table where you can actually see your steak prior to cooking. Very attentive staff, quiet, romantic atmosphere, and the best tasting steak I've had since moving here 4 years ago....would highly recommend! Went there on a date and they even stored flowers in their cooler so my date could have flowers on the table when I got there. Thanks for making my date such an experience!

We took my parents for what was supposed to be a memorable experience. The last time we ate here I chose a strip steak carved at our table. When it arrived it didn't appear to be the same piece of meat. This time my father and I ordered the Prime Rib. It was tasty, but, both had more fat than meat. You take your check up and pay at the door? I mentioned that our Prime Rib was fatty and the hostess asked if I told the waitress. She saw what she served us. The presentation is just meat on a plate.

Eating Out has become so ordinary in our lives nowadays that it is difficult to find the perfect little romantic spot for date night. My husband and I just found our ""special place"" at The Peddler Steakhouse last week. It has been a long time since I have been to a place where I didn't feel like I was being rushed. This restaurant is cozy with candle-lit tables. My husband had the best Prime Rib he had ever eaten and I thought my Grilled Tuna was superb. However, nothing comapred to the salad bar. They have a variety on their salad bar that I haven't experienced since I lived in SanFran. No where here serves things like smoked oysters, artichoke hearts, and mixed peppers to compliment the regular salad items, until now!! Portions huge; very price friendly. Hands down, best eating eating experience since moving to Raleigh 6 years ago!!

I got the ""10 OZ"" regular cut of prime rib which was probably closer to 12 oz - it was very lean, cooked perfectly, nicely seasoned, tender and juicy - almost no waste or fat at all, unlike any other prime rib I have ever had. My wife quite enjoyed her 8 oz ribeye. \n\nTrue, there are not many sides to choose from - baked potato, fries, or rice - but the awesome salad bar more than makes up for that. \n\nI have been to the Angus barn and was not impressed - this place and the Homestead Inn are much better.\n

The Peddler is a quiet, romantic place tucked away off of Glenwood Ave. and you can't beat the steak! They also have a fix it yourself salad bar- a rarity these days, clean and large, fresh selection. Enjoy your steak over a candle lit table in a comfortable and friendly environment. Order a New York Strip or a Ribeye and pick your piece of meat at your table as the meat cutter slices it to your fancy. I highly recommend the filt mignon as well- out of this world!
