My friend and I stopped here after a matinee show. There were very few choices- I was really disappointed in the selection. The options sounded pretty good overall- crab cakes, steak, chicken, salmon, a few salads...but nothing jumped out

Great location if you're attending a show on Broadway -- this place is in the heart of the Theatre District.
Sardi's is a legend. It has been serving the theatre crowd since 1921. Walls are lined with caricatures of actors and actresses. Top Notch wait staff at your beck and call.

And the FOOD? Ah the Food! Exquisite! We had a most wonderful dinner -- Steak tartare and salmon to die for. And a corner booth. What more can one ask for.

Be sure to walk or take the subway -- crowded area near Times Square.

All you need to know is Al Hirschfeld has countless of his caricatures all over the walls which makes is feel really special inside. It is the perfect blend between romantic restaurant and art gallery. if you are downtown whether sight-seeing or catching a show, it is a must see!

There is no better place for pre-theater dinner! I always take friends/relatives from out of town and Friday was no exception. Steak tartar prepared tableside to order, fabulous pasta and chops, delicious desserts - try the Tahitian vanilla creme brulee! Service is friendly and flexible to your needs. To those who complain of the price - its New York, get over it! You can easily dine for $50 per person on the fixed menu offerings - not unreasonable in the Theater District.

This is truly a New York landmark. I was in the city from out of town and went to see a show. We had dinner at Sardi's afterwards - as other reviews have said, it's "the thing to do." Despite what some other reviewers have said, I didn't find the prices unreasonable at all. The food is outstanding (I had an amazing Caesar's salad and possibly the best chocolate cake I've ever eaten) and the service is first-class. And on top of that, you get the unique character and history of the restaurant...

Where to go for a drink after a Broadway show on a Saturday night? Why Sardi's of course. I was surprised to walk into the little downstairs bar to find only seven people in the historic drinking spot -- five at the bar, a couple tucked into one of the shelf tables. Though I was expecting a crush of theater-goers ,I quickly realized that there is comfort in small numbers -- especially when Bartender Jose is on duty. The visit soon became an intimate cocktail party with all guests offering tales of their Broadway experiences. We heard that Liza and Sarah Jessica are grand gals . . .that Jose calls Stephen Sondhiem "Steve" . . . that Mary (one of the guests at the bar) had a wealth of stories about Broadway celebs . Two gentlemen from Pennsylvania offered show reviews with detailed descriptions of the worst and the best . A little more about Mary -- it seems that she is a frequent visitor at the bar and enjoys sharing stories about her friends, from Lansbury to Pitt. So next time you are in Times Square on a Saturday night, stop by Sardi's for a drink and the "show." And please, give my regards to Jose and Mary.

Sardi's is a must experience for everyone that visits New York City, especially if they go to the theatre. My husband took me here on our third date after seeing Phantom, and it knocked my socks off. It leaves an amazing impression the first time you go - everything is first class, and there are all of these charicatures along the walls. It's a New York landmark.

I liked it so much, I brought my grandmother before seeing Gypsy for the Prix Fixe early supper. It just didn't have the same effect, although the food was quite good.

Finally, my family went to celebrate a couple of birthdays, and no one liked it at all. We all had been before, and the novelty wore off. The food is good, but it is really pricey. Make sure you ask about the Prix Fixe menu if you go.

This famous New York tourist spot is completely overrated. I was disappointed in the restaurant. Tables are crowded together. Pictures of stars are on the walls. Food was average. Priced too expensive for the experience. Not likely to go back.

This is a typical New York Restaurant. They have pictures of all of the stars on the walls. We found the food to be not so great. It was expensive. Glad we went because it is a very well known restaurant and after the plays alot of the actors hang out here.

If you are going to a matinee in NYC, you have to lunch at Sardi's. What a tradition! For years, the walls have been filled with drawings of the many celebrities who have dined here.
It is in the heart of New York's Theater District. Sardi's has been the toast of Broadway for 82 years.
The food is continental cuisine, traditional yet innovative, It is creativite and tastefully presented!
Make reservations for dinner! Everyone wants to eat and be seen here!

My husband and I were visiting NYC for the Holidays and we thought it would be fun to stop by Sardis for a drink. We knew it was known as being touristy, and we ushered to the bar upstairs. It was fairly crowded but we were able to find two seats at the bar. The bartender Dieago took excellent care of us, charming, and even took a small order from us, that he himself picked up and delivered. The appetizers were good. When we come back to the city in Spring to see Chorus Line we will surely come back and have dinner and another drink with our new friend.

.....or they were there on a night when they were breaking in a new kitchen staff?

My and my husband's experience couldn't have been more different.

We were a good 40min early to our reseration and expected to wait, but we were promptly and graciously seated anyway.

We ordered the pre-fixe dinner and got two different appetizers, the ceasar salad and the spinach canelloni. The salad was perfectly dressed, and the dressing itself was what ceasar should be, light and lemony, not heavy and dense. The canelloni was delicious and served in a cream sauce and the dish was broiled to give it a delicous crust. It was warm and comforting on a cold night.

For our entree, we both had the ribeye, both of our steaks were cooked to perfection, and the butter sauce they were topped with was infused with wine and delicous. The dish was accompanied by haricots verts that were cooked perfectly (they tasted as though they were picked that morning), and pomm frites (I refuse to call them french fries, they were so delicous that that title doesn't do them justice).

For desert we had the cheese cake. This is the only cheese cake I've really ever enjoyed at a restaurant, and it tasted like my mother's recipie.

No, this restaurant is not at the cutting edge of haute cuisine, but, they excell at the preparation of the simple, traditional fare that they serve.

BTW I wan't expecting a restroom attendant so I didn't have cash on me to tip them. Remember to bring some cash.

I had the greatest birthday ever going to Sardi's. I was treated very well by the staff and they were extremely attentive. My boyfriend and I chose Sardi's for my birthday and we will definitely be back for other occasions or just a nice meal in Manhattan. The food was PERFECT! The best meal out that I had in a very long time. We were extremely satisfied! We started with an appetizer Sampler, which has a tease of every delectable delight that you can imagine artistically placed on one plate. Then for our Main course, we dined on Mahi Mahi and Salmon over Greens - AGAIN, Perfectly cooked. Just the way we liked it. Dessert was a beautiful final touch. We shared a cheese cake, which came to us on a plate in a round shape with drizzles of a white chocolate and raspberry sauce. Their Coffee was top shelf too. We were very pleased with everything and they made sure we were seated and served on time before he left for a Broadway Show that we planned to see. Sardi's started our most wonderful evening! We will not be a stranger to Sardi's in the future. You now have two more happy customers.

Pros: FOOD, Service, atmosphere

Cons: The lighting in the room was a little darker than I liked it, but it did give it a romantic look.

I fall somewhere in the middle. I would say that the atmosphere was nothing amazing, I didn't feel like the authenticity of the history of the place was nearly as prevelant as it could have been in the experience. For someone who is very familiar with Broadway it might prove exciting. The food was good but not great. We had a nice view but it was too cold in the dining room. They did a good job getting us out in time for our show and the doorman got us a cab with a smile, which was the single best part of the restaurant.

Last week I had such a great evening, I had to write again. My brother was in the City for a quick visit. So, at the last minute, we got tickets and saw a show. As we exited and walked along Shubert Alley, we saw the sign for Sardi's and decided to have a late dinner. From the greeting at the door, to the table-side service, we felt as if we were the only ones in the restaurant (we weren't the only ones, by the way)! We each had delicious salads followed by dessert. The food was fresh and really delicious. Our expereince at Sardi's was the perfect ending to a perfect evening -- local or tourist, try it ... you won't be disappointed!

Sardi's may have just average food, but the service and ambiance made up for it. They understand that most people have theatre tickets and serve promptly but without rushing you. The staff was courteous and efficient. The doorman went above and beyond the call of duty to get us a cab. A very pleasant dining experience in an enduring piece of New York tradition.

I wasn't expecting much based on the Editorial Review, but this place was great. On a crowded Saturday night, we got there earlier than our reservation, but they sat us immediately. We were whisked to our table where we were promptly served drinks. We then admired all the portraits around us. We never felt rushed, though they were prompt and attentive. The food wasn't spectacular, but it was worth the price. The atmosphere is really what makes it though. It's a piece of Old New York that everyone should experience.

The term "living on reputation" does not apply to Sardi's. We called for a dinner reservation for 7 only 2 hours before arrival. Sardi's could not have been more accommodating, the food was better than I had been lead to believe it would be, and the service was nonpariel. We spent $150 for "our 3" (yes, they even split the credit card checks), and will gladly spend that much and more again. ... One word: We went early (6 p.m.); by 6:30 it was beginning to get crowded.

On a recent visit to NYC, my wife and I had a great experience at Sardi's. After being turned down rudely at Carmine's, we went to Sardi's for a pre-theatre meal. We were immediately seated by a very friendly host. The overall servive was wonderful and the pasta and seafood dishes were out of this world. Skip Carmine's and head to Sardi's for a first class New York experience.

Weve been to Sardis on several occasion's when we catch a show. Our expectations are always met if not exceeded. This place has been around for decades because they know what they are doing. Despite what another reveiwer wrote, I beg to differ. New Yorkers can be the most fickle people and if an establishment doesnt deliver, they go elsewhere. Past reputation alone doesnt always ensure longevity in this town. Sardis clearly stands the test of time for a reason.

My family has been patrionizing Sardis for many, many years. Im considered the youngest generation of my family and I too follow my families dining preferences. Dining at Sardis is an experience all in itself. Many famous people of today and yesterday flock to Sardis when in town and I know why. The food is perfection! The menu changes in keeping with todays trends. The daily specials are the way to go. Some of my favorite main courses are the Marinated and Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Jumbo Gulf Shrimp, Italian CannelliniBean Râgout Florentine Style and Frizzled Sweet Onions as well as their famous Crabcakes. I enjoy the ambiance and the exceptional service while dining. I look foward to passing on this tradition of eating at Sardis when I have children someday. Buon Appettio!

Sardi's has become a cultural phenomenon, featured in many famous movies as THE place to spot celebrities. But when it comes down to it, it is just another overpriced restaurant with average food. The location is great if you are catching a show, but the food wasn't worth the price we paid. The steak was very good and the Shrimp Sardi was tasty (although the portion was kind of small). I would recommend checking out this place once just to see what all the fuss is all about.

I had heard of Sardi's for years and to know that I could include Sardi's in a long weekend celebration as a college gift to my son ... I just couldn't pass it up. Great staff and wonderful food .. great locale. We ended our trip with a fabulous time at Sardi's.

Thank you!

Pros: Cheesecake, Location, Service

.

Perfect location for theater-goers but the food was not as good as i had anticipated...the ceasars salad is made at your table -which is rare now a days - it was quite tasty - crabcakes were overseasoned and heavy - but the deserts were chocolately and satisfying. all and all a rather uneventful dining experience - nothing to write home about.

Pros: location, star sightings

THe food is terrific, the atmosphere is great. Eating here makes you feel like a celebrity becasue of all the pictures on the wall. I have never had so much fun and relaxation at a restaurant before. The best waiter ever also works there. He looks like Luke Wilson, and he is wonderful. Whenever I go back I will request him.

I didn't expect to be dining almost in my neighbor's lap; the tables are right on top of each other. We went last week just because of the history. Was not everything I expected but wasn't awful either.

My husband and I had dinner here last week and the food was very good. The shrimp Sardi was excellent. My husband's crabcakes were delicious as well. The service was prompt and the atmosphere festive. The food was a bit pricey, but everywhere in NY it is!

...and a better value. Thsi was the WORST meal I have had in a long time - and the most expensive bad food I've had that didn't coem wiht an airline ticket. Ignore the reviews written by their PR folks. The service was unprofessional, slow, and the food coudl have been a mircowave meal. The most tasteless creme brulee I've ever had. AVOID - there are WAY better pre-theater places, like Orso, Hell's Kitchen, etc for the same price.
