We used to love Rx. It's close to our house so we would go whenever we could get the rare night out without the kids (not that it wasn't kid friendly--it was). We never felt that it was the greatest, hippest, or most exciting restaurant in the world, but we knew we could get reliably well-prepared, locally-sourced dinners there that came in large portions and were served in a lively, friendly, neighborly atmosphere.

Tonight, though, we should have known something was wrong when we were the only customers at 7:30 on a Saturday (it used to be packed on weekends). The menu seemed off, too, so we asked our server what was up. She told us that the ownership had changed but that the chef and kitchen staff were the same. NOTHING IS THE SAME. The formerly melt-in-your-mouth dayboat fried calamari is now frozen rubbery rings. A corn relish served with it tasted like canned corn swimming in sugar syrup, and this when fresh, crisp sweet corn is everywhere you look. We had overcooked, greasy, tasteless trout, which I guess you could say was a good match for crunchy, undercooked and oversalted black eyed peas. Honestly, it tasted like cafeteria food. Given how bad it was the small portions were a sort of blessing, but such a disappoinment after the heaping plates of comfort food we got at the old Rx.

Gone, too, is the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The surly manager threw our menus at us and our server, while very sweet and clearly trying, asked us if we wanted plates for our appetizers, and didn't give us plates for our entrees until she had walked off and I called her back to ask for them. No response from anyone when we answered honestly after she asked us how we liked the food.

Sad to say, but our go-to neighborhood spot is one we'll never go to again.

First, a caveat: I haven't been to Rx for over a year (due to my busy hospital schedule, not any decline in service/food on their part), so I can't speak to any changes that might have occurred in the past year. However, my experiences before that were stellar. Unlike the most recent reviewer, I found the service to be excellent. The servers were always incredibly warm, and on Mother's Day, when I took my mom to brunch, they gave me an unsolicited discount for being a regular! Plus, they were very gracious in participating in this ridiculous scavanger hunt I orchestrated for my boyfriend's birthday (they were one of the "stations" he had to find). But back to the food...their brunch is incredible. I'm not sure what they do to their french toast, but it's delicious. it has this strange crunchy/caramelized stuff on the outside, and the berry syrup is lovely. And I've been fortunate to go to brunch on several occasions with friends that keep kosher, and I inherited the most magnificent pile of glistening bacon this world has ever seen! Dinner is also lovely and so simple, yet so delicious. One time my soup came in the most adorable little pumpkin tureen (yes, I know I'm shamelessly girly in my ability to be one over by such things). The ambience absolutely can't be beat! All the positives aside, you WILL wait if you go to brunch on Sunday (they don't take reservations and it's popular!). That's not a problem when it's delightfully warm and sunny out, but a less-than-thrilling prospect in the freezing cold!

I was referred to RX by various frens due to recommendations of fantastic and authentic american breakfast.

The service was totally unprofessional!

We were served HALF the usual portion and the waiter did not even falter when question about it and seem unfazed!... He only returned briefly after checking with the kitchen to inform us abt the minor mistake! It was totally unacceptable behavior! Where is the customer service?

The food was only decent but the experience left a sour taste. Will not return again.

Eclectic offerings for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Combined locally grown produce into novel combinations that were refreshingly delicious and beautifully presented on the plate. The atmosphere was hip and friendly. Staff and diners all seemed to be having fun. Funky decor featuring century old features of the apothecary mingling with new photography of local artists. The owner greeted everyone at their table personally. All in all, a great experience!

I'm used Greg to cater luncheons 3x now and their food is really fresh and local and very tasty. They make this hazelnut dessert that is one of the best things I've ever had. I've been to the byob in West Philly too - dinner is very good and I hear brunch it too.

This a great restaurant located in West Philly by UPenn. If you are a more health conscious eater, the chef uses mostly organic vegetables and meats. The cuisine is new American. They usually have a local artist's photographs on display.

Rx is located at the corner of 45th & Spruce Streets in a former apothecary and it still bears some of the remnants of that incarnation, namely the scales, jars, shelving, & on the wall, still working, an old Frank's Soda-faced clock.

The clientele of this no-frills, byo policy bistro reflects the demography of University City/West Philadelphia: Young, old, black, white, brown, single diners, couples, both dates & married, families with young children, suburbanites, etc. It's exactly my cup of tea as I thrive on diversity.

Rx's menu changes daily & they're open for breakfast, lunch & dinner + brunch on weekends. On the back of the menu is a list of their purveyors, almost all local. The owner's mother bakes some of the desserts.

My husband ordered a salad of radicchio, endive, pears, gorgonzola & sweet/spicy walnuts as his appetizer. It was delicious. My starter was a wonderful plate of grilled calamari atop a salad of peeled whole tomatoes, feta, mediterranean olives, tzatsiki & greens. It was very lemony & very good.

My husband ordered a whole grilled branzino with quinoa, walnuts & dates, as did I. We've since been back many, many times and have ordered practically everything on the menu. It can be hit or miss but more times than not we're pleased with our selections.

Desserts sound & look marvelous and tend to be homespun rather than elegant. They also tend to be seasonal.

This restaurant used to be a gem. The menu was exciting with interesting choices and creative dishes with fresh, locally grown ingredients. Unfortunately, it seemed to have peaked and is now on the decline. The dinner menu seems to offer the same dishes month after month. Once you have visited a few times, there's nothing new from which to choose. The New York strip, the pork chop and the branzino have been offered the same way for what seems like a year or more. Brunch weekends are usually crowded and in the past, seemed to run efficiently. However, the manager that seemed to have kept things running like a well-oiled machine is no longer there and what has ensued is lack of service, food quality and chaos with an attitude. I was there this past weekend at 10:00 am and waited along with about 10 people outside (and inside) the door for a table. There were plenty of tables available for seating but the staff was so busy with the few tables that were seated that no one attended to the door. Once we were seated, we waited around 10 minutes for coffee. The bottomless cup that Rx boasts was not available to us as we finished our cup of coffee before our brunch dishes arrived (about a thirty minute wait) and asked twice for a coffee refill but never received it. I'm assuming our food had been prepared for a while and was waiting on a counter for when we received our food, the eggs and potatoes were cold. We ate our breakfast in want....we needed ketchup, we needed butter and we needed coffee refills...but we got none of these things. What we got was average food (at best) and nonexistent service. It seems that quality control and efficiency are greatly lacking and the excitement that used to be evident that was demonstrated by creativity in the menu and good service is no longer available at Rx. That same morning I ran into a neighbor who had eaten at Rx the same morning I had. His thoughts were, "It was a horrible experience. I doubt if I'll be back."

Having passed by Rx many a time, we decided to try it on a Saturday night for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised at the great food, great service, and excellent coffee! Having seen one $ for price, dinner prices were a little more than we thought. Starters were in the $10 and dinner entrees averaged $20-25 (considering the quality of the food, completely worth it!). The Rx salad, topped with carmelized pecans was great. For dinner we had the Bells and Evans chicken and the New York Strip - both delicious! The menu seems to change monthly and provides a good range of choices for vegetarians to meat eaters. Being dessert lovers, we devoured the flourless chocolate cake and the homemade apple pie (made with local winesap apples!). We appreciated being able to pay with a credit card at the end of our meal. We can't wait to go back on a Sunday for brunch!

I have been to Rx more times than I can count (I live in the neighborhood) and I have truly never been disappointed. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Rx is fabulous. The prices are right, the food is fantastic, and the wait is short as long as you make a reservation (be smart...don't show up to Sunday brunch without calling first). This is not the right restaurant for quick eaters - just sit, relax, and enjoy your meal. The menu is always creative, incorporates organic and free-range ingredients, and the coffee is fantastic. I highly recommend brunch, but dinner is fantastic as well. It's also good for groups....we had an anniversary party here and it was a great experience. I highly recommend Rx to anyone looking for a great meal at a BYO.

We went for Sunday brunch. The place was packed, with people lining up outside. I was 10 minutes late, and my four friends took a scolding from the manager, who threatened eviction from their 6-person table.

Fortunately, all was forgiven when I arrived, and our food came quickly. Portions were attractive, if rather small and decidedly uninspired in concept or execution. My water glass was dirty and smelled strongly of unspecified spoilage. A request for more bread met with puzzlement followed by "what kind?" and "how many?" Alas, our order for 2 squares of whole wheat toast (at $1 each) went unfilled. The "bottomless" cup of coffee had been sadly misnamed. The otherwise absent waitress kept removing and returning the sixth chair at our table..

Our check arrived very swiftly. A 20% service charge had been automatically added to the after-tax total.

We just hope they give us another chance.

I visited Rx and loved every minute of the experience. My group of five arrived and unfortunately had to wait for a while because of a mix-up with our reservation. In their defensive, it was a mistake and we were seated promptly. The best part of the meal was definitely the food. I ordered the whole fried branzino with crab jasmine rice and mango salsa and it was simply amazing. The fish was tender and flaky with a delightful tomato based sauce. The mango salsa was fresh and added a nice touch to the dish. For dessert, we were treated to a complimentary dish of their apple pie a la mode from the owner because of the mix-up with our reservations! He came by especially to apologize and personally recommended the desserts of the day whipped up based on their pastry chef's mood. I have to say, the apple pie was perfection--light, flaky crust and a sweet yet tart filling, warm with melting vanilla ice cream. This is coming from someone who usually shy away from apple pies! I highly recommend Rx but with a reservation, don't forget!

My girlfriend and I went to Rx one saturday night and had a wonderful experience. We read a few bad reviews on citisearch, but found the service to be exceptional, the ambiance welcoming, and the food was exquisite. The owner made stops at every table, and asked by name if we were enjoying our experience. Our reservations were for 7:30,and when we showed up 15 minutes early,we were seated immediately. My only suggestion would be to dim the lights a little bit,it was a little too bright.I reccomend this to anyone looking for a fine dining experience in a unique inviting setting

we tried to make reservations here ahead of time but when i called they said they don't take reservations for brunch. when we arrived we saw an open table perfect for our group but the host would not seat us there and told us there'd be a wait. after waiting a while the host proceeded to ask us to stand outside in the cold so we would not block the entrance. he was very unapologetic about everything. while we were waiting a party of 10 came in and was seated in the open tables we had hoped for. although the food is pretty good i didn't think it was amazing enough to make up for the horrible service. i don't recommend this place at all.

I took my girlfriend to RX for Valentines Day and it was excellent. I have been there before, and they have their typical fixed price dinner but for V-Day they had choices. It was very nice change. The staff was very friendly and provided excellent service and knowledge of the menu. My girlfriend had the Waluu (very recommended), a in-between of a steak fish texture (Swordfish like), and a flaky fish texture (Tilapia), and it had a sweet after-taste, a very pleasant surprise. It was laid upon a cauliflower mash. I had the NY Strip with Spinach and Yukon potatoes, very well done. The staff suggested the Brownie, which we picked and it was the right pick. Overall, a great experience, I will be going back... and taking my friends.

In response to the 11/19/05 posting, I would like to say that I completely disagree with your comments. I recently went to Rx with a party of 14 and it was a wonderful experience, great food and great service. Also, this very website, CitySearch, states that reservations are needed. Maybe your husband needs to work on his research skills.

My husband and I, along with out of town guests, arrived at Rx at 6:45 pm for dinner and were turned away because we did not have reservations. My husband had thoroughly researched this restaurant online. Needless to say, our evening was somewhat ruined by the mis-information this restaurant allows to be perpetuated about it. How hard could it be to contact online restaurant review sites and ask them to update their info? Furthermore, when we contacted Rx to tell them about what happened, the manager was unapologetic, aware of the misinformation, and hung up on us. We were trying to do him a favor, and he thanked us by being rude and completely dissmissive.

After another year my girlfriend is now my wife and this continues to be our favorite restaurant in Philadelphia, BYOB or otherwise. The service has improved dramatically, the menu has continued to evolve daily, and the desserts have gotten even better. One thing that Rx does very well is balancing the menu so that everyone can find something perfect. There tends to be more fish/seafood choices than other BYOB's, which my wife always appreciates. Menu mainstays like the country porkchop or scallops with oxtail risotto are always terrific. During ~7 visits over the last two years we have not been dissapointed once. I have changed my previous review to reflect Rx's improvement in service, and the editorial review needs to be updated to reflect the improvement as well. I would recommend Rx for dinner on terms of food, value and dessert over any other restaurant in Philadelphia.

Rx for brunch is whole different experience. It's priced like a diner and the service is informal, the best part is the local farmer's eggs. Dinner however, is the most affordable fine dining in town. We had squab with a sweet potato custard for $20 and all homey desserts made at the restaurant. For a funky little place, Rx rocks. The tables and chairs are cheap, the plates are like a diner but the food competes with any other fine dining restaurant in the city. I think they added a new chef last year and the dinner's are really some of the best we've had and now they have parking too, which really helps when you venture out there.

My wife and son (3) and I went to Rx for dinner recently. The three of us had been there for brunch (great) before, but this was the first time we took him for dinner. It was early and midweek, so i figured it would work out. The waiter (Ben) knew enough to offer something off the menu for the kid and steered me toward the beef short ribs, which I loved. My wife had a fish dish (I think i was bronzino) with an Asian accent and she thoroughly enjoyed it. We shared a bottle of wine and the owner came and chatted with us as he seems to do with everyone. A nice place for a very good meal.
