Great place for a girls night out. The martinis are amazing. There are so many to choose from. There is so much to choose from on the menu. I have always had a good experience dining at Continental.

Wow. Words escape me. I have been a Continental fan and patron since it's inception. I pretty much worship their lunch/dinner menu. That being said, i had strayed away from the "original" Continental since the opening of Cont. Midtown. This weekend, we were really feeling a brunch escape and decided, though out of the way, to take it back to home base and check out the Continental in Old City for brunch. Shame on us for being so excited... maybe our expectations got the best of us, but then again, we LOVE the Continental for it's staples so why should we expect anything less?

We should have. The service was terrible (think no water with our meal until we asked twice and unfilled bloody marys, which you think they would WANT to refill at $9 a pop). Our meal left MUCH to be desired as well. Our home fries were cold... and I am not a big complainer, but I could not even stab them with my fork without it bouncing off. Beyond that, my omelet off of the special menu (with crab?? spinach, goat cheese and tomato) was basically a goat cheese and egg omelet. I think I caught 2 or 3 bites of crab and only half of it had spinach. My husband's egg benedict was also cold and left much to be desired (I won't even get in to the portion sizes).

Suffice it to say that the Continental that I remember must no longer exist. If I ever go back, it will be to the modern, Continental Midtown, where they must have sent their "Varsity" chefs and servers.

A waste of just under $100... would have rather spent it on dinner or around the corner at the Plough and Stars.

Great place to meet in Old City for the Best Martinis in town. My favorite is the Buzz Lightyear (Tangerine Martini). Good Food, fun crowd, trendy place. Little overcrowded at times. Would recommend.

We dined at the sidewalk tables at this restaurant. The lobster mash potatos were amazing and piled high!!! The lettuce wraps were totally yummy. I would recommend a visit to this restaurant.

This is one of the current IN places to go for a martini in old city today.

It can get a little crowded with everyone standing around with their shakers.

If you eat make sure you try the shoe string fries.

Just moved to Philadelphia from Boston. This is a great place to meet alot of people from all over the city.
Very fashionable staff, friendly, and great food and service! I also got a great reccomendation for a place to get my hair done! My waitress goes to Ultra Hair Studio and I can't wait to try that place. Thanks Philly!

I've been going to Continental in Old City and in Midtown for years. It always meets expectations and the service is always great. Almost anything you order there is solid--the pad thai, the bbq quesodillas, the sushi rolls, cheesesteak egg rolls--all good stuff. The drinks are on point too! An incredibly good value for the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere.

I've heard great things about the brunch here but was really let down. The server seemed like she had other things to do. The food was cold when it showed up and the portions were small. Overall it was terrible and we won't go back.

In my opinion, this Continental is best for its food whereas drinks and dessert should be gotten at the other location (I prefer the drink options at the midtown location, and desserts in shot glasses here were nothing special). If eating here for dinner, try the Rad Na salad (BIG portion, and the best dish overall), pita and hummus, thai chicken skewers, lobster mashed potatoes, crab pad thai and summer rolls (all were quite delicious!). I haven't been here for brunch in a while but when I did go, I also remember it being quite delicious.

I threw my sister's bridal shower in the back room. It was a complete success! I worked with Kerri in the Events department, and she handled it beautifully. I had 25 guests and the food, service, and ambience were perfect. Thank you Continental Restaurant!

i tried this place on the random whim of my girlfriend. i was actually pretty excited to go there, i walk past it all the time. the real problem with this place is the inconsistency of portion sizes. i tried the thai chicken skewers which had a great flavor. my girlfriend had some sushi dish and a dish with dumplings, we were both left hungry. continuing to dessert, i had the cheesecake, which they gave me a total of 1 strawberry, and she had the coconut creme brulee. creme brulee was amazing. because we were still hungry, we decided to split some of the chinese mustard shoestring fries. which the pile was huge. didnt finish it.

service was nice.

everything was pretty expensive for the little amount of food you get.

it was a little loud in there, and i would never recommend it for a romantic night out.

truthfully it was alright.

The food was great and the service friendly. We were seated pretty quickly, and thats only because we were willing to sit inside. The outdoor seats were jammed. The shoestring fries were enormous and very good, maybe ask for them without the sauce since it was a little spicy. Since its also a bar, they had an extensive drink menu, all were really great.

Originally, I wanted to stop by another place for a late lunch (3pm), but they didn't serve food at that time. We were directed to Continental and I was suspicious at first of the themed decor (martini's and airplanes?) but the place was packed and appears to always be packed. Luckily it is a cavernous restaurant with lots of different rooms, each with a slightly different feel to them. One is smaller and more intimate - one large group could take it up, the front room is louder and great to see and be seen, where the back room seems better for smaller groups that want to hear each other. Our waiter was a cute aspiring actor - he charmed everyone at the table w/o being obtrusive. There was a table of 6 hip ladies celebrating a 40th bday party - they couldn't get enough of our hansome waiter. The food was great. The burgers were super, but, surprisingly, so was the seared tuna. I wouldnt usually get seared tuna at a place that bills itself as a hip diner, but it was a good call. All in all - great time.

First impression of the place, friendly staff, cool decor, relaxing atmosphere, fairly innovative food but can be slightly crowded if it's full. We followed the recommendations of the waitstaff and were really satisfied with the taste. It was a better experience than Buddakan or Morimotos. Will definitely be back.

Here is the truth about this restaurant: this food is rather bland and definitely overpriced. People go here because of its look, which apparently is cool or hip, but it's not authentically so. This is yet another example of a restaurant trying to be fine dining but failing miserably. There is a difference between a diamond and a fake diamond, and this place is an example of a fake. Unfortunately most people are content to surround themselves with plastic and pretend it's a precious gem. What is our society coming to? Please do not eat here.

I come here often... it's always consistent. Drinks are always strong, food is always delicious. I have never had anything but great service, although I see others who reviewed have. Yes, there are people who think they are super cool, but I find it entertaining to watch people like that so it doesn't bother me. I like this location much better than the Continental Midtown because it is much less touristy.

Year after year, the Contintental maintains its greatness. Brunch is awesome here, and the pumpkin waffles are out of this world. My friend and I had her two small kids with us, and the staff was friendly and accomodating (and the kids loved the shoestring fries - they're heaped on the plate like a little mountain). If you go in the evening, try the Lobster mashed potatoes; you won't be sorry. Finally, late night, the martini menu is extensive, and ALL of them are delicious.

If youve never been to The Continental before you have to go. If youve been there in the past you have to go again. THe continental seems to always keep up with the times the outdoor seating is the best in Philly. The place is where to be seen in the city where to get food and great drinks. Everyone there is good looking and it is very relaxed and fun. My favorite spot.

The Continental Old City is truly what Philadelphia is all about. On a given night you can hang out with your friends over thier amazing cocktail list see celebrities and the prettiest women in the city and get a reasonably priced fine dining style meal. Ive been to the Continental several times and it has never disappointed the atmosphere food and service have no rival. If you go you have to try thier crab pad thai or their lobster mash potatoes. They have an amazing classic cocktail list and its reasonably priced. I would recommend this to anyone its an experience.

Visited The Continental on a Saturday evening . Upon arriving, it was very busy, very noisey. The entire meal conversation was done by screaming as the noise was nerve-wracking. The music was loud, so patrons had to speak even louder. The table was very small and there was about 6-10 inches of space between us and the table on either side of us. We were presented with with the Crispy Calamari Salad, which was very good, then the Rice dish that was ordered came. When the Fried Squid was brought to the table, it was handed to me on a plate that was too, too hot. The kitchen server left me holding the plate trying to find space on the table. Finally, after about 1 minute, our server arrived and made room on the table. The price was very reasonable. The atmosphere of the restaurant left much to be desired.

We wound up here on a rainy day. The first waitress we had took more than 10 min to show up to order our drinks. At that time, we saw an empty table by the window and asked if we could move. She totally didn't hide her "disappointment" and disappeared for another 10 min before we could finally move over (apparently, the window table wasn't hers). The second waitress was fine but the food was just ok. The cheese burgers we ordered were fine but nothing fantastic. The soda just doesn't deserve $3 a glass. On a Sat lunch time, the place was full of loud speaking and smoking crowd.

The Continental is great for lunch or dinner - their food is always awesome (the shoestring fries and the pad thai chicken are my favorites), prices reasonable and the drinks are great too. You have to try the Buzz Aldrin! Yummm. However, the bar scene on the weekends isn't my favorite...the bar in the back gets super crowded and there is not much room to stand, plus you have waiters pushing their way through the crowd. It's best to get a table if you want to come on a weekend night -- but the wait is sometimes super long. The servers can be a little snooty sometimes, but then it's Old City so that isn't shocking. All in all, it's still one of my favorite restaurants in Philly!

Vacationing from LA, I came to the Continental twice. I was very impressed with the food, service, and decor. The seared tuna was to die for. I still crave it. As was the gigantic pad thai plate (not the most authentic pad thai but still very tasty and worth getting).
The waiter was very nice. He gave us tips on hip places to shop in and around Philly. The service was good overall.
The bar on Saturday was packed and full of some unsavory bar broad types. The martinis were kind of off. Not cold enough. A round of drinks only costed $28 which is way lower than I am used to paying.
Overall this place is really cute. It looks like it was inspired by the store 'Flight 001'. Very 'Catch Me If You Can'.

This is great, fun, hip place to start off your weekend. The place is packed, with funky seating throughout, some good spots, some bad spots depending on your mood. The servers are for the most part, average. They all seem like they'd rather be anywhere but here serving mear peons. Tude a plenty! The food is exceptional, where sharing is the name of the game here. There salad could feed a small country. Go for the funky experience.

Don't mistake this for your average diner. I was intrigued by the appearance and totally surprised by what I found inside. The atmosphere, the drinks and the food combined to make this the best time I've had during my stay in Philadelphia. The Buzz Aldrin is my new favorite drink, but, if you're feeling adventurous, there are numerous other martini choices. The tapas style menu was excellent for our large group and an experience all its own.

Reminiscent of a 1950s stainless steel diner, The Continental has an upscale menu and a huge martini selection. Great for just meeting for cocktails, the ecclectic decor is creative and whimsical. Martinis include one called a Deani Martini, sevred with a filterless Camel cigarette to be held with the crystal glass between the fingers. On busy nights the service can be slow--be prepared. Parking may also be a challenge, but it's usually worth it.

I was recently back in the Phili and was happy to hit an old haunt. Our waitress told us that we couldn't order because the kitchen hadn't opened up yet. That seemed fair but as we sat starving, other tables placed orders and food poured out of the kitchen. When we did get served, the food was great. When we politely asked for water, however, the waitress wandered off and forgot. I asked TWO more times, 5, then 10 minutes later with similar responses, before we gave up and left...thirsty as heck. It was ridiculous and I won't go back.

Pros: Food, Ambience

This Starr spot features everything...including Spot or Rover or whoever in warmer weather leashed to one of the outside tables. The customers are an eclectic mix of tourists, Old City residents of all ages, and younger folks sporting many piercings and tattoos. The servers, all of whom are friendly and enthusiastic, seem to fit in the latter category. The food itself is very good. The weekend brunch highlights include challah french toast (skip the syrup and order it with carmelized bananas), and make sure to order a plate piled high with angel hair sized shoestring potatoes. Other options (but not my favorites) are the Rad Na Thai chicken that comes in what seems to be a never-ending bottomless container when you eat it (it's that much food) and a somewhat nondescript turkey burger. The desserts (as in most Starr places) are decent but not memorable.

I love coming here for a night out in old city during the week with my friends. The drinks are good -love the Buzz Aldrin - as is the food. And all reasonably priced. Love the calamari salad. I have only had good experience with the service here, whether I've come on a slower weeknight or on Satudray night. The atmosphere is fun - somewhat trendy, yet relaxed. The weekend brings a lot of the bridge crowd, but can still be fun.

I've been visiting for several years now, and must admit that the Continental still rates as my favorite place for a martini! At times, the place can be overrun with UPenn students, but they make for lively people watching and chatting. Overall a consistent winner

Made for a wonderful date--excellent drinks, very prompt service, food came out surprisingly fast, but no pressure to eat fast. 2 hour leisurely meal was lovely. Courteous and friendly waitress. And the value was fantastic: rare to find a filet mignon or seared tuna of such quality for such a reasonable price.

The food here is pretty good. If it weren't for the "we're so hip" crowd and staff, I would go back here again.

It's nice to know that Philadelphia has such a literate population that take the time write nonsensical commentary about a good restaurant. The Continental is a great consistent place to go and have fun, almost every night of the week. It helps if you aren't narrow-minded when you leave the house to go out. As for the "bouncer", I know him, he's a nice guy. Try the mirror in the bathroom of your house before you sit in judgement of others.

Great place. Food is varied, eclectic, and delicious. Atmosphere is warm, relaxed, laid back. Service is excellent and a very pleasant staff will let you linger if you wish, or be prompt if you're in a rush. Wonderful creations, and great assortment of martinis!

I LOVE french fries and thought I had successfully tasted the best in the US and Canada...until my sister introduced me to the Continental's French Fries. I love the texutre, portion, presentation and their original horseradish based sauce drizzled on top is awesome! I have had 3 visitors from "home" (Alberta, Canada), and everyone get's treated by me to the Continental's fries! They are not to be missed and if I was being truthful... more than make up for the otherwise lacking service and ambiance.

Although it was extremely crowded and noisy inside and that my party of 3 had to wait an hour to be seated, once we were, everything was awesome. The waitress was fast as heck to bring us our meals (probably because they want to move as many people in and out as possible), but we still didn't feel rushed. All I have to say is order the Continental Salad - it's big enough as an entree for two! And the shoestring fries are different (what a huge helping, too!). For dessert, try the hazlenut bread pudding and an espresso martini. I'm definitely going back, but I think I'll try brunch next time.

though some might coin it 'trendy' or 'stuck-up' i had a wonderful experience here. the food is delicious (may i recommend the chilean sea bass), atmosphere sexy and playful with an air of class, and the martinis sensational (hawaii five-o and a cholocate for dessert). i went with 5 good friends and though the noise level made it tough for intimate discussion, we didn't have to hold back laughing out loud at the crazy and entertaining people strolling about outside the restaurant. this is a great place to have a delicious meal and start the night off.
