I highly recommend Dr. Polley and the staff at Denton Country Animal ER.

Last weekend I called DCAE around 1am to ask questions about my elderly cat who had been sick and seemingly near death for a few days. I knew she was terminal and thought she would go peacefully. I'd also never had to "put down" an animal and had no idea what to do. I had researched end-of-life animal care online but needed to speak with a human being about what my cat was going through and what would be best for her. New to the area, I didn't have a vet I trusted enough not to run expensive and unnecessary tests and then try to talk me into treatment I couldn't afford and that wouldn't help. But I needed to talk with someone about this.

I called DCAE and told the staff member who answered the phone what was going on. She was compassionate, kind and patient through all of my questions and explanations. I could hear the phone ringing in the background but she didn't put me on hold or try to rush me off the phone. She said the vet was in and could tell me what my cat needed. I decided to make the drive from Frisco at 1am because I felt comfortable with this person who had been so kind and patient with me on the phone.

I arrived about 45 minutes later and was immediately taken into an exam room. The vet tech asked if my pet was stable, which she was, and did a quick check of her. She told me the doctor was doing CPR on an animal and would be with me as soon as she could. I waited about 20 minutes, but could hear what was going on and knew that she was helping another, more critical patient.

When Dr. Polley came in, she was kind and friendly. She asked what was going on with my cat and I explained. I also explained that my cat's quality of life was most important and that I didn't want to put her through all kinds of tests and hospital stays if it was not absolutely necessary. She did a physical exam of my cat and agreed that she was very, very ill. She told me about possible diagnostic tests and treatment options. In the end, I chose not to put my cat through all of it. She had stopped eating and stopped going to the bathroom, her breathing was shallow and labored, she was sleeping all day and seemed to be in pain. She was obviously not going to recover to a good quality of life.

Dr. Polley and her staff made this heart-wrenching decision and experience as peaceful as possible for both me and my cat. The care they took with both of us during the visit and afterward is a gift for which I will be forever grateful.

I was absolutely shocked to read some of these reviews, and strongly disagree! I am a cat breeder, and also a Vet tech for many years. Over the years, I've had to rush a kitten or cat up to this emergency clinic for care. Every visit, I've been impressed with the level of care my cats received. Dr Polley is one of the best Vets in Texas. If she cannot save your pet, it was not going to live anyway. Dr. Polley has earned my trust 100 percent. She is one of the most competent Vets I've ever seen in action, and I've worked for many Vets. She is highly respected by other Vets. To the complainers--Yes, ER's are expensive! They ALL are. Prepare to break out the credit card, no matter which ER you choose. For me, I'm going to spend what it takes to save my beloved pet. If you don't feel the same way, don't walk through the door...or just have your pet humanely put down if you want to cut costs. Sorry if that sounds blunt, but it's your option! There's no Obamacare for pets!

I highly recommend this facility and the staff! Upon arriving home from work we found our "Bear" bleeding from the rectum and in severe pain. We loaded him up and headed to Denton. He was impacted and was critical at that point. They provided timely emergency care for our rottweiler and trully cared about his condition and pain. They took time, several times, to update my husband and I on his progress and their plan of care. They were VERY reasonable in the estimate for his care AND when we paid the final bill, there we no extra charges tacked on. As a matter of fact, they offered to keep him overnight, AT NO CHARGE, so they could monitor him and we could go home and rest. We made plans to pick him up at 7:30 the next morning. They took our phone number so they could call us and give us updates as they examined him or if anything changed in his conidition.

The facility was clean and comfortable and when we went to the back area where they care for the animals, I was amazed at the technology, cleanliness, and organization. The staff worked together well to triage animals as they arrived and all the pet owners in the facility were treated like their animal was important and would be well cared for. My husband and I read the reviews here before going and were a bit concerned but needed to get our "Bear" immediate care. I cannot imagine a better outcome and treatment from any facility and wonder what others could have possibly seen that warranted such negative reviews. Staff were rude? NO! Facility was dirty or outdated? NO Prices were outlandish? NO They are open from 5 pm until 8 am which I think is wonderful! What could better serve those that work and cannot get their pets to a vet during the day?

When we picked Bear up the next morning, they had him in his own room on a blanket, went over his xrays with us and plan of care at home, and finally... they offered to see him in a few days for a FREE follow up to make sure he was healing. This a seriously awesome facility and staff. We are very appreciative!!!

I am amazed at some of the other reviews on this site, and have to wonder if it's even the same clinic?? The entire staff at this facility was amazing! Warm, thorough, attentive, compassionate...I could go on and on. Of COURSE an after hours emergency isn't going to be CHEAP...but I found them reasonable for the services that were needed. I also appreciated that the doctor/owner personally took the time to go over treatment plans, which allowed ME to decide how much I could afford to do, or not do. Because of their amazing abilities, my baby made a FULL recovery, and I am forever thankful they had the knowledge and equipment to treat her properly!

If you live in the Denton area, you are lucky enough to be near one of the finest animal emergency clinics EVER! I had an unfortunate incident with my golden retriever, and I have no doubt she would be in heaven prematurely, if it weren't

If you do not have to use this clinic...DON'T! We went in because we were brand new puppy owners who were overly concerned about a lethargic pup. They told us our puppy ABSOLUTELY NEEDED to stay over night to be monitored and have tests run every couple hours. All for the low low price of $750!!! I laughed and got kind of angry when I realized what was going on (highway robbery) so they got a nasty attitude and told me that if I didn't have my puppy stay over night "I would be responsible and the only one to blame if her brain swelled and exploded because of my neglect". I was ready to walk out right then and there but their manipulation worked on my husband and we left our pup over night. So after all that money, I picked her up the next day with her 'medicine': wet food for puppies and sugar water. And just for good measure the "vet" was super condescending and rude because I obviously did not want the absolute best for my puppy even though it turned out to be nothing. DO NOT GO HERE!

Our dog got into something and we had to take her there because it was a few days before Christmas and everything else was closed. They did do a good job treating her b/c we didn't think that she would be able to make the 20 min. car ride. After they got her stablized we had to discuss the payment. They gave us a quote from $1000-$2000. They also told us that if they were going to go over the $2000 budget they would notify us before they did so. We paid the higher amount of the quote on the credit card, in agreement that they would reimburse us if need, which wasn't very likely but we were ok with that. We had to leave her there for 2 nights. We called several times to make sure she was doing good. When she was ready to be picked up, they told us to be there at 6 am. We were there by 6, and had to wait 45 mins. while other customers walked in and went in front of us. When they finally got to us they took us in the room to discuss payment. They told us it was $800.00 more than they thought. We love our dog, but the issue was that no one called us and verified that is was ok, like they said they would. Everytime we called to check up on her no one said anything about it either. When we brought the issue up, the man got very short with us and was very rude. At one point he yelled us saying, "we did a lot of s*** to save your dog!" We told them were grateful that they did save our dog, we were just questioning why no on called us. And he continued to tell us how ungrateful we were.

Although they did save our dog. They were extremely rude, and didn't do what they said they were going to do. I have to agree that they are there for the money, not for the dogs.

When you have an emergency with a pet you love, you will do whatever a "professional" tells you to do. For me, this included a $75 call to Animal Poison Control and almost $1000 for treatment. DCAE told me they would not treat my animal until I had called APC, which I did while sitting in the waiting room after they had taken my dog to the back. APC asked to speak to the Vet but the Vet was too busy. APC was extremely nice and thorough in explaining what could possibly happen to my dog after eating a small amount of chocolate covered raisins. While I am waiting to actually see a Vet, a lady comes in to get her aging cat euthanized. I had been there for at least 30 minutes before she came in. I totally understand that lady's very difficult situation. However, I had just been told my young and vibrant dog may die if not treated quickly and the Vet decided to euthanize the cat before even talking to me! When she did finally talk to me, she said she did not even need to talk to APC because she had treated many cases like my dogs'! Of course, I am not complaining about anything at the time because I just want my dog taken care of. She then tells me they will go ahead with the treatment now that they have talked to me (more than 1 hour after I arrived). I did everything they told me to do because I did not want to take any chances with my pet. However, I felt like they totally took advantage of me at a vulnerable time. I was not impressed with the level of service that I saw for many others that came in during my many hours in the waiting area over that weekend as well, from Dr. Polley (also the owner) to the tech at the front desk. My feeling is they are there for the money, not the animals. I am rating them satisfactory only because they did not kill my dog and there are not other options for animal emergencies after hours nearby.

I work at a veterinary clinic and have to tell you that without the Denton County Animal ER all pet owners in this area would be driving for a while.

I agree that it is expensive. I believe we're paying for the convenience of them being open while everyone else is closed.

I've only heard one person complain about the service they received from them in just about 7 years of working at my veterinary clinic.

When you have to the ER it is seldom an enjoyable experience. Some of their reviews may have been written in the heat of the moment. There are very fine people that work at this Animal ER.

My cat had an abscess from a fight with another cat. We thought it was just a scratch and swollen muscle underneath. A couple of days later, the abscess burst open and we noticed her laying on her side and she had a huge open gash that you could fit a BIC lighter into. Since it was Sunday, no other place was open, so we took her there.

We were given an estimate from $523-$713 and basically got turned away because we could not afford to pay that full amount for a few days. We instead gave a carbon copy of our debit card to be charged later for the $75 visit, and $43 anti-biotics. I could have gotten those anti-biotics at Tractor Supply, or for half the price from my regular vet, but they insisted on not letting us take her without anti-biotics.

They wanted to do exploratory surgery, which, as stated in the previous post, would have involved plenty other procedures that were unnecessary. Lucky for us, no friends, or family could help, as banks are closed on Sundays.

So now I have read several online articles stating that vetrinary care may not even be necessary, as we already have anti-biotics for her, and that the wound will drain and heal itself within 7 days. They basically wanted to giver her $500 worth of drugs to sedate her, and $150 to stitch up the wound. I'm now reading that the wound will drain itself, and that I can help do that myself (very easily) and the wound should stay open and heal naturally.

I'm glad we did not have the means, or help, to be taken advantage of and overpay for procedures. All we had to pay for was $118 for anti-biotics and for someone to look at our cat and tell us pretty much nothing. However, I'm also extremely disappointed that a facility claiming to be for emergencies has hearts black enough to turn away animals from getting treated if they cannot present an exorbitant fee immediately. We could have paid in full in 5 days, as we don't have 1,000 extra bucks laying around just in case one of our animals happens to get hurt on a Sunday when DCAER is the only place open.

Also, when returned, my pet carrier had yellow drops on the top of it, which I assume to be another animal's urine. I sure hope that animal wasn't contagious! Great cleanliness, guys!

Like most people I consider my dog a family member. My little dog was attacked by a much larger dog early one Saturday around 3:00 a.m.as I took her outside with me.I was able to scare the big dog away from my little dog, and get her back inside. She was trembling, and scared, I was concerned when after a few minutes she was still shaking, worried she might be in shock. I was grateful to find the E/R . The Vet saw my dog right away, I had looked all over her little body, could not find a bite mark or sign of blood. He took her into an exam room closed the door came back out and showed me a tiny spot on her abdomen where she had some blood. I was asked to pay a deposit of 520.00, which would cover her BASIC Xrays, antibiotic,IV morphine.I was given 7-8 estimates from 250-4800.00 which would pay for exploratory surgery. I have a medical background and asked questions, as to the procedure in determining exploratory surgery, with clear Xrays, and bloodwork, I felt the Vet clearly was trying his best to take advantage of me in the situation. I tried taking my estimates with me, but was told I could only have one. I left around 4:00a.m. leaving my dog for the remainder of the night. At 8:00a.m. returned the Vet explained my 520. had been used up on Xrays, labs,IV,morphine, anti-biotic.
I was pressured over the surgery and didn't feel comfortable, signed her out to take to my regular Vet, Was told I was responsible should she die etc, My vet and I felt my dog was heavily sedated, as morphine wore off she was energetic, playful, on a soft tissue injury exploratory surgery is sometimes done, but more when a little dog is shaken and picked up by larger dog. My vet didn't see any labs,x-rays etc that warranted this surgery.I was frightened, and felt manipulated, definitely overcharged, harassed when I was vulnerable, I noticed other dog owners in the lobby that morning crying, very upset, they said couldn't afford the treatments being recommended, my Vet requested the file, was told the computer had "lost" all my information. I liked the staff here and the vet. The only downside was the vet had no knowledge of pet foods and when I started talking about Innova or California Natural she was clueless. My cat has reoccurring crystals and blockages, so this is why we went. Luckily enough it was just a UTI and we left only spending $80! They are a great place.
