I have been to Silhouette several times over the years. Generally, the sushi was below average but it was close to my work. It had been at least a year since I last stopped by but I decided to give it another shot (I had a sushi craving). It was the worst sushi I have ever had.

I ordered the Sushi Combo A, 7 pieces chef's choice nigiri and a california roll. The avocado in the california roll was so ripe it squirted out of the roll as I bit into it. The nigiri included fake crab, the first time I have ever seen fake crab on top of a piece of nigiri. The 2 pieces of white fish had been splashed with some sort of sour liquid (Rice Vinegar?). The taste was overpowering. One of the pieces of white fish was as tough as a well done steak (possibly chemically overcooked by the sour liquid?). The piece of tuna was cut ninety degrees to the grain of the fish. I have never seen a piece of tuna nigiri that even showed the grain. The rice underneath was falling apart, what little there was. Each piece had a round ball of rice underneath.

I would highly recommend getting your sushi fix elsewhere. I just hope I don't end up sick from giving this place one more try.

I eat sushi on a regular basis and have had everything from the freshest sushi at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo (where the majority tuna is sold) to the local HEB. I have never had sushi that looked and tasted as poor as this.

The sushi here is not great by any means. For the price I thought it would be awesome or even just okay...it was not. The rolls were nothing special and they were incredibly small. the fish in all of my rolls was almost non existing. The atmosphere was okay, pretty desolate though. I will never go back.

Maybe in 2009 the sushi was worthy of a Best of City Search, but not now. It wasn't awful just not that good.

My wife and I have driven by this place many times and never knew it was there. We were walking downtown and stumbled on to it and decided to check it out. The restaurant is small and narrow in the front with tables for two, and towards the back opens up for tables with 4 or more guests. It has a very chill eclectic vibe to it but not too trendy. We sampled their baked mussel clams (very good; ask for the spicy version), seaweed salad, and miso soup - all good. I had the 15 piece sashim combo and my wife had the Spicy Tekka Don (spicy sashimi tuna over rice) and split an order of spicy tuna roll. The Spicy Tekka Don was fantastic and very filling - we were very surprised by the portion (enough for two). The sashimi combo was good but not the best Ive had (Musashino). The spicy tuna roll was bland after having the tekka don. Overall the experience was great. The wait staff was prompt and courteous. We have been back since and really enjoy. I would recommend this place for a casual first date or dinner with friends. Its a place where you want to go and enjoy the company you are with.

Service has been lackluster, but it depends on which waitress you receive. One seemed absolutely clueless and provided the poorest service I have ever seen, but the waitress with glasses was prompt and knowledgeable. She took orders quickly and brought food in a short amount of time. The sushi itself is generally served warm, which is not very good. The rice doesn't seem fresh. I also discovered a bone in my salmon role, which is a first for me. The price is nice, especially on Monday happy hours. Not one of the best restaurants in Austin...

this place is definitely not for everyone! it's an eclectic atmosphere, and requires a certain kind of attention to be fully appreciated for what it is. from the walls to the people this place is beautiful, however i have been selective about who i invite to join me here for dinner. it's not a suit / tie place.
downside- they literally only serve sushi. it's very simple and traditional, and there are little to no other meat or fusion dishes.
upside- they literally only serve sushi! and i would guess that's the reason the fish has been amazingly fresh everytime.
note- i would definitely go for the server/bartenders personal recommendations. i have yet to be let down.
they tend to have up to an hour wait during weekends. i would call ahead.

I don't know what it is about the sushi at Silhoutte, but it is the best I've ever had! The atmosphere is very warm with great artwork on the walls. The waitstaff is awesome! All very attentive, helpful and friendly. I highly recommend Silhouette for an enjoyable dining experience.

I decided to try out Silhouette after hearing from numerous friends that it was great. My boyfriend and I decided to go on a Monday and we were really pleased to find out it was Happy Hour Sushi all night! All of our favorite rolls were on the happy hour menu and we even decided to try some nigiri for the first time ever because it was so cheap. Our server recommended some great fish choices for us and even turned us on to a new sake that we both loved. Both me and my boyfriend really enjoyed the ambiance, service, and, most importantly, the food! I highly recommend Silhouette to anyone looking for an easy going, fun sushi experience.

As a member of a large business company which frequently treats its employees to dinner, i am quite familiar with the busy Friday nights accompanying all restaurants in the downtown area. furthermore, i am familiar with the less than par service that large parties sometimes receive when the restaurant is full. this was not the case with silhouette. first of all, the atmosphere of silhouette was very warm, and very unique. our eclectic server, Sarah, was very friendly and extremely helpful. she gave us GREAT recommendations on drinks and appetizers and refilled our waters so that i never saw the bottom of my glass a single time. it was obvious that she had several other tables (plus our party of 10) yet she took the time to pay full attention to our questions and requests. we ordered two "boats" of sushi and a great deal of rolls and almost all the food came out surprisingly quickly since there are only 2 chefs behind the sushi bar. one of the boats took longer than the rest so the manager compensated by providing the entire table of 10 with a free round of drinks. the fish was sensational. it was incredibly fresh, the presentation was aesthetically pleasing, and i didn't try one single thing that i found to be sub-par. our table had such an enjoyable experience that we applauded our server at the end of our meal. the service was great, the manager was great, and the food was great. what more could you ask for?

when i walked in i was ecstatic about the place. the art is so original. i was told to sit at an empty booth and was greeted by my server who seemed clearly overwhelmed with too many tables. after taking our drink order, she returned in a few minutes and asked to take our order. we ordered 2 sushi lunches and an appetizer to start out with.i asked for a spicy sauce for my sushi and some cream and sugar for my tea.i had to finally go up to the bar to ask for cream and sugar, at which point i realized the bartender was eating sushi behind the bar (unsanitary) as he was just watching as the flustered server ran by, not lifting a finger to help. he told me there was no cream in house without even looking, and reluctantly got me a few sugar packets. we received our salads and then our sushi came out. noticing that our appetizer never arrived, i told the gentleman who ran our food that we were missing an appetizer and that we didn't need it after all. My friend then noticed a hair in her wasabi but no server was in sight. I flagged down the manager and told her about the hair, which she then returned with a new plate of wasabi with no apology and didn't offer to remove the wasabi with the hair! The server returned several minutes later with our appetizer and i told her we did not want it after all. she looked at us with disgust and she replied "um, well, I'm pretty sure my manager will not take this off your bill". what? i thought an appetizer came before the meal, not several minutes afterward! i would NEVER tell a guest that after they sent food away! she and my friend argued for a bit and then she yelled "fine!" at us before she stomped off, never to check on us again. The manager never dropped by and we were presented the check 15 minutes after we finished our meal. I work in a restaurant and am embarrassed to have seen the performance of the staff and this restaurant . furthermore, the sushi was fishy and old and the rice was stale and hard to chew.

So, when Shin and Kevin were the chefs, my girlfriend at the time and I would visit Silhouette weekly, if not more. The manager (I really can't remember his name at the moment) would come spend some time talking with us, and eventually bought sake for us nearly everytime we came in. That and the fact the sashimi/nigiri used to be awesome kept us coming back again and again.

Well, it had been a while since we went, but we got together again one night and ended up going back. The waitress was the only one we recognized; no more Shin, Kevin or the manager(owner?). Apparently they've changed owners, and as the previous review stated, it's not the same.

I really used to love the place, and even wrote a review for Beluga stating people should go here. I'd like to still do that, but the rolls *are* smaller, and there is less "presentation". The tastes, for the most part, are unchanged. The unagi, is still very good, without a bone-ish taste, and the eel sauce compliments it perfectly. The basic tekka maki is also decent. However, again, the sizes of these rolls and nigiri are smaller.

*Shrug*

Will I go back? Probably. Uni is just too far from me, plus you can't beat the late nights.

silho used to be pango's, and i've been going there regularily when i'm in town to catch good sushi for the past couple yrs. shin and kevin ( the 2 sushi chefs) have stayed loyal througout the past 4 yrs (and counting) and to my surprise the quality of fish has gone up since the most recent change over in management. i have not had a chance to sit down and meet the new owners, but am making it a point to do that on my next visit. i love the unique atmosphere, diverse crowd, and friendly/helpful wait staff & bartender everyone raves about. two thumbs up.

PROS: This restaurant has a great location, nice decor, pretty romantic. The waitresses are generally nice, and seating has never been a problem. They have good happy hours, and a good menu._______________

CONS: This restaurant recently changed management, and hired a new chef. The last time my wife and I went there, the wait time for our food was incredibly, unbearably long, especially considering the relative uncrowdedness. Also, our waitress (the heavy walker; her steps are super heavy; you'll notice her!) was very rushed and overworked, and rather impolite.
___________
Also, the waitresses were using windex to clean the tables near the customers. Maybe it's just me, but the overpowering smell of ammonia detracts from a meal.
_____________
The temperature was also really cold; we asked the waitress (twice) to adjust the air, but nothing came of it.
_____________
The worst part is what has become of the food since the new chef has taken over. The rolls are a sad shadow of their former selves. They are smaller, floppier, and less flavorful than they used to be. I really can't emphasize enough how disappointed we were in the new rolls. Also, the presentation has changed from quaint square wooden plates to plain white round plates, like you might find in a high school cafeteria.
________________
If you're looking for a slighly below average sushi place, this isn't a bad place to go. But only go during happy hour: these new rolls just aren't worth non-happy-hour prices. Check their website to see when happy hours are.
________________
I really don't get pleasure out of reporting bad restaurants. My wife and I used to love this place; but the change was so disappointing that we were impelled to share it will fellow Austinites. Also, perhaps the new management will read this, and make and effort to either improve on or at least restore the way things used to be.

If you are looking for incredible sushi (as well as other food), reasonable prices and a comfortable atmosphere Silhouette Restaurant & Bar is the place. Okay...so I read the other reviews about this place and thought I'd give it a chance anyway! When we got there the place was empty so seating was prompt. We chose to sit at the bar. The bartender ignored us for at least five minutes. Then he put two glasses of water in front of us and still didn't offer to take our drink orders. The smell of fish was unbarably strong! This is coming from someone who spends most of the summer at the coast drinking sodas that have shared cooler space with our freshly caught fish. The smell combined with the unusually warm room temperature and warm sushi was over all a bad experience!

I get to Silho almost every other day either for lunch (try the specials they are filling and affordable) or after work for sushi and drink happy hour. I've taken friends and co-workers there and they have all raved about the sushi and drinks. The first thing you will notice when you walk in to this place? The smell! Overpowering fishiness... pretty gross. But I don't know if it was from the fish or the machismo... I went in for lunch and there was almost no one there but people who were obviously friends of the bartender. Yes, the machismo was flowing and I felt uncomfortable just sitting at the bar trying to have a bite to eat. You think they could tone it down and be respectful of paying customers. They had a loud and obnoxious conversation while I was virtually ignored.

You can tell this place is trying (a little too hard, not unlike the bartender) to be swanky and flashy. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

But while the sushi was decent, I won't be going back.

I had high expectations on this restraunt considering its rating. Looking for a romantic night to celebrate a b-day was met with lots of dissappointment. The atmosphere is anything but romantic with loud metalic music and the odor of a fish market. The rolls were not original and did not have much flavor. Only saving grace was the sashimi. The dessert was highly shocking- paid $4 for something that was finished in one scoop. Luckally the coffee shop down the road served ice cream. Service was good.

I visited the restaurant on a couple different occasions on a recent business trip to Austin. The sushi was good, no complaints there, and the service however was excellent. Amber was bartending on both visits, and she was really one of the best bartenders I have seen working in a long time. She remembered people's names, their drinks, and managed to carry on conversations while mixing an incredible array of fancy cocktails for the dining room, including every kind of 'tini you can imagine.

Check out the late night Happy Hour on the weekends for great prices on sushi.

Fresh fish. Friendly service and the best sushi happy hour prices around. Being a night owl I love the late night sushi happy hour on Saturday nights (11pm to close). The fish is always fresh and full of flavor. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

They have a decent happy hour for their sushi. Growing up in California, I used to having fresh and authentic sushi, but being here in Texas, I still haven't found anything that can compare to the sushi out there. But for their happy hour price, it's a good deal.

I went into Silhouette with fairly high expectations - perhaps that's where I went wrong. My main complaint was the freshness of the fish. Not that the fish wasn't fresh - it just could've been fresher. And although the presentation was stellar, the prices were reasonable at best. Don't think I'll be going back there in the near future.

Silhouette has excellent decor, dim lighting, friendly and accommodating servers, and the best sushi in town at a great value. Try the chirashi, which includes over 12 kinds of fish and shelfish sushi on a bed of seasoned rice, all at a price cheaper than if you ordered individual nigiri. Come on a night when Kevin, the head sushi chef, is at the sushi bar. Their coctails, such as the lychee martini, or the fresh fruit sake martinis, are also amazing. Note: Silhouette only carries a few non-sushi dishes.

Sillhouette has sushi happy hour monday evening- all evening! My boyfriend and I have been going to there on Mondays since it used to be Pango's and it is hands-down the best deal for the price and flavor. Try the spicy tuna roll and taipei roll...pretty much everything on the happy hour sushi list is good. The service has always been friendly and the ambience is good for a date or friends. If you go on a day other than Monday, the prices seem pretty average for most sushi restaurants. Oh, and have the ginger martini or rose water drink - delicious!
