.

We went for lunch, where I ordered the sushi plate with 6 pieces of nigiri sushi and 3 pieces of california roll. I was told they were out of toro and encouraged to order "hamachi toro", which I assumed was the belly piece of the hamachi, for $9. I was told that this hamachi toro was to hamachi as toro is to regular tuna, so I decided to give it a try. My companion ordered the shrimp tempura bento box.

At first sight, I was struck by the tiny size of the pieces of sushi. I mean, grocery store nigiri and California rolls would dwarf these. I was also disappointed that they included fake crab and overcooked shrimp as two of the nigiri. Anyway, the sushi rice was fine, but none of the fish tasted really good. The maguro tuna was the best. The so-called hamachi toro was nothing like toro. It was extremely firm and a little bit oily where toro is soft and tender and spreads around the mouth as you eat it. It would have been ok for $2.50 a piece, but not $9 for two, especially given the tiny pieces.

The bento was ok, with two pieces of tempura shrimp and five or six of tempura vegetable.

There's really no point in having sushi at Sushi Japon except for the staff. The people who work here seem really warm. On the other hand, when the waitress asked me how I liked the hamachi toro after I'd eaten one of the two pieces and I told her I was very disappointed, she did not offer to take the remaining piece back and not charge me. A really good restaurant would have done that.

sushi japon has the best food of any other Japanese restaurant in the Austin Area. We visit sushi japon every chance we get; birthday's, anniversaries and just because we want some good food. The staff is very friendly and overly excited to make sure that you are pleased with your dining experience. They do get a little crowded at times, but obviously that is because they have the best Japanese and Sushi in Austin. highly recommended!

If you go to dine at sushi japon expect to eat a delicious meal. Everything is well prepared. The service is wonderful and everyone is friendly and attentive. It is a great place to bring family & friends. Both the sushi and the habachi grill foods are out of site or should I say out of this world!

This place is absolutely fabulous. The combination of food, service and atmosphere makes it my favorite restaurant. The owners are incredible. They are extremely friendly and have worked very hard to provide the best food and service in Austin. I applaud them for being friendly and very accomodating, which seems to be lacking in so many restaurants these days. Once you go there, the other sushi restaurants in town will seem to disappear.

I have been to many Japanese restaurants in various locations around the world. This is by far my favorite, both in Teppanyaki and in flavor. Their sushi is amazing, especially the Fatty Tuna role (and it's reasonably priced at 2 pieces for $8, quite often it's $10 per piece). Usually most restaurants that do show-cooking are flavorless, but even my wife who doesn't like meat ate every bit of steak/chicken served to her. Also, the staff are very courteous and attend to your every need. Definitely try the peach sake if you get a chance.

Pros: Just About Everything

Cons: The only con I can think of is that the restaurant isn't as big as you'd think it is.

We took the kids to sushi japon steak house for a special outing and they absolutely loved it. The chef entertained them and they absolutely loved the food. All we heard for days after was how good it was and when were we going back. A great place for kids or for a romantic meal... I would highly recommend it.

Our whole family went (12 in all) to celebrate my 12 year old son and my mother -in-law's birthdays. We had a blast. We were entertained by the wonderful chefs and the food was excellent. Our waitress was so attentive, we didn't want for anything. The quantness of the resturant was very appealing and even though we had a large party, it was easy to see and talk to everyone. The food was delicious and the service is unbeatable. The menu "seems" a little pricey BUT what you get for money is unbelievable. We originally had reservations for kobe's but friends highly recommended sushi japon Steakhouse and said they'd never go back to the "other place". I'm with them. We've found a new family resturant and can't wait to go back again

I have been to Sushi Japon a few times for an after-work snack at the sushi bar and always found the atmosphere pleasant and the service very nice. The sushi chef is always the same guy and is nice to talk to, along with the servers. Tonight I went with a date and again it was an excellent experience. We started with some Edamame and the excellent Gyu Tataki appetizer, which is thin slices of seared (rare) beef served in a delicious ponzu sauce. Sort of like steak sashimi - it was great! We got a bottle of cold sake since they actually have a good selection at the bar. The server was knowledgeable about the selections and recommended a bottle, which was from California and was good enough. For sushi, we tried the Kevin's Special Roll - asparagus tempura and masago inside, topped with lightly seared tuna, lemon zest, and spicy sauce. This is an excellent roll, one of the best in town. We tried several kinds of nigiri sushi including Sake Toro, Unagi, Toro, Anago, and Hamachi Toro (was not on the menu but the server told me about it). The toro was amazing, as I would expect at the $9/piece current market price. The sake toro was fresh and delicious, which is great at only about $5/2pc. All of the fish was delicious, the cuts were very generous, and the prices are very reasonable for fresh, quality fish. The service was excellent, very attentive, and our server seemed very interested in how we enjoyed everything, recommendations for our next visit, etc. Dinner came to about $90 for 2 people including a $15 bottle of sake. Overall, pretty reasonable for this caliber of food and service.

Don't let the frontage road location scare you away. The service and food are top notch. This will now be one of my first choices for good sushi in Austin. A+

My boyfriend and I went on sunday night for a birthday dinner. We ordered sashimi/sushi platter for two and it was amazing. the fish was fresh, the presentation was great, and an interesting/impressive variety. We were serviced by a very attentive and friendly server, and we really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. Everything about/in the restaurant was authentic - this is definitely our new favorite sushi spot!

I ran across Sushi Japon which can be seen while driving up I-35 North past Rundberg.

I order 2 pieces each of the Hamachi, Maguro, Unagi, and 1 each of Tobiko and Fatty Toro. The Toro was a tad expensive but that was to be expected. - market priced at $9 each. I then ordered a glass of plum wine.

Plum wine: Disappointingly too 'red' and sweet.

Nigiri sushi were very unfresh. The $9 toro was very, very unfresh and I only took a small nip at it. The seawood covering the tobiko, etc were chewed and chewed and chewed but I just couldn't manage to chew it enough to swallow and digest. So, I discretely spat it into my napkin.

They may be great in other areas but their Nigiri on that particular evening left a lot to be desired. So, I decided to pay my $35 bill and went to Mama Fu's Asian House since my hunger was even remotely satisfiedl

p.s. I should have ran out of the joint as soon as I saw the sushi chef and the food preparer scrutinizing a slab of fish and the sushi chef finally deciding to wrap it into plastic and discard it. He should have done that with all of the fish at the sushi bar and called it an evening.

The first time I came here, I was really biased. I have been a huge fan of Sushi Sake for years, but Sushi Japon has stolen my heart! I can't even tell you how many times I've been here now. I DO NOT eat anywhere else. The owners (I think?...they're sisters, though I know that!) are amazingly sweet. They offer the best service and are so sweet! They always know what my boyfriend and I want but still allow us ample time to order. They have a 'ceviche' they used to offer as a special that is not on the menu anymore and are always happy to let us order it! Their sushi is fantastic. I love their 'saba' and their unagi is the best I've had (eat it when it's still warm!!!). Also, their sunomono salad is fantastic. A lot of places get this simple salad wrong, but I have never had a bad one here. Their tempura is great, too! Very crunchy and just properly made unlike some places that have a very thick batter and do not use panko. What else can I recommend? Get the gindala!!!!! It is so good. It just melts in your mouth...mmm! And my boyfriend LOVES the gyu tataki! The ponzu sauce is phenomenal! I have been here so many times and have gotten such amazing quality food and service that I had to finally write a review. I grew up next to a Japanese restaurant owned by a Japanese couple...so, I have been spoiled all of my life and know good sushi! They tend to have a short staff, but always seem to pull things off. I have come when they are packed, and though the food came out a little slow...I was still really satisfied. Trust me! Just go! It is amazing.

I don't know about the reviews but I visited here because of the review and it was just horrible. The table that i was seated to was very dirty and there were leftover food on the floor, the booth chair was very sticky. Another annoying thing was that food did not come out right, and worst part of all, there was something that looked like a b u g in the food. I asked to get another one, which took forever in the kitchen and the waitress was so rude. She almost seemed like she was mad the whole time i was there. I also notice some other waitress and the sushi bar guy talking about roa ches or something. I dont know about other people but this place was just bad.

Wow. couldn't be more surprised.
The first time i went there it was ok. but last weekend,
the service was terrible, there was hair in my food. and some
insect antenna looking thing in my food. i was so disappointed and
I almost threw up.
It was just disgusting.
and i don't know how old the waitresses are but one of them tried to flirt with my husband
while i was there, asking how much he had and how much he was planning
to spend on me.
It was terrible .
i will never go back

This restaurant is a great! I would have to agree that I enjoyed the secludedness of this restaurant, making the place not too crowded and a lot more enjoyable,I had a great time with some friends here, we had great sake drinks, and enjoyed the speciality rolls, the fish was so fresh and delicious. The price was fair and the service was great, I defenitely recommended this place to everyone I know and will be going back soon.

This is one of the worst sushi restaurants ever! It seems like no one is even working here when you go. The service is way worse than the food. Sushi is not fresh. I gave it a benefit of doubt after just getting up and leaving the first time. No one was there to seat us and when a waitress finally came it was horrible. It didn't become all that better when I tried it again.

I just love this place. It's near my house so I've been a half dozen times. I've never been disappointed by the food or the service. You will notice that the one bad review of this place is by someone that orders their beef well-done. Enough said. My only complaint about the service might be that it is TOO attentive, but they are all so friendly and fun to chat with that this is hardly a negative.

I'm not a die-hard sushi fanatic nor an expert, but I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with the Kevin's Special Roll. Lightly seared tuna placed on a tempura-asparagus roll topped with lemon zest and just a dab of spicy sauce. Definitely the best specialty roll on the menu (in the city?). You sashimi fans won't be disappointed in the freshness of the fish either. I grew up on Cape Cod, so I'm really picky about fresh fish, and Sushi Japon delivers.

I came in and was immediately greeted and offered a drink while i waited for my friend to show up (it was thursday). It wasn't crowded, and it wasn't loud (which i liked). I had a Ichiban on tap. Good beer for a place like this to have on tap. I don't remember everything we ordered, but i remember the spider roll and it was good! Love the soft shell crab! Not the BEST i've had in Austin, but it was good. The staff was great, very friendly and accommodating. The location is great, easy to get in/out. I think after 3 years they could take down the "Grand Opening" sign. They told me they've been there for 3 years and while i was pulling out i noticed the sign. They should really take that down now. So, overall, i would recommend them. They aren't the best, but if you're in that part of town (2222 & I-35) this is not a bad place at all; my experience was good!

Pros: location, ambience, staff

Cons: curb appeal

I've been to more than my share of sushi joints and I must say that I was not disappointed with this one. I celebrated my 27th birthday here a little while ago. Our waitress was extremely friendly, the food was delicious, the ambiance was very nice, and the manager was very personable. She was very interested to know what we thought of everything and was open to suggestions. Most places don't even give a damn as long as they get your money. . I would definitely bring a date, go back with friends again, or even have a meal by myself at the sushi bar.

The cuisine is fantastic. I had one of their special entrees - the Chicken and Shrimp - as well as the Spicy Susan roll and the Kevin's Special roll. The entree alone was more than enough to satisfy a starving person. I haven't tried any of the other Japanese restaurants in town, but I was impressed with this one. Definitely worth checking out if you're in town and are in the mood for Japanese cuisine.

We moved here from California a little bit ago and have tried a few places and this is the best so far. Some of the others were terrible, others were just ok. Uchi was too expensive and pretentious for mediocre sushi. This one was good sushi, a good sushi chef and good service, at a decent price.

I live in the neighborhood and I visit this restaurant once a week. The sushi is always fresh and full of flavor, buttery and delicious. The appetizers and specials such as beef tatak serve with home make ponzu sauce. green apple smoked salon, and vinegared crab are wonderful but, honestly, I've never had a dish there I didn't enjoy. The service is very attentive. If you like excellent sushi prepared by a staff who really cares, definitely check it out.

My husband & I arrived at the restaurant shortly after 7pm on a Friday. The wait to get seated was long, even though the restaurant was empty. Only 6 tables were seated. After we were seated the waitress took at least 15 minutes before greeting us & asking us what beverage we wanted. We kept our cool & patience & treated her with alot of courtesy anyway. What bothered us was that she took the orders of 2 other tables that arrived after us! Then she brought out our dinner before the appetizer. The appetizer came 20 minutes into our dinner. She also didn't even ask us if we wanted miso soup or salad with our food. She just brought us one of each! After that treatment, my husband & I decided to enjoy our dinner anyway. We were in the middle of a conversation & the waitress came & asked my husband if he was done & he said yes. She proceeded to take his plate, & then mine. She didn't ask me if I was done, & I was obviously still chewing, I even had the chopsticks still in my hand! This place has potential to have good ambiance, but it was definitely missing anything good that night. Each of our plates were at least $20. We ordered appetizers and drinks. You would think we would get decent service, since that affects the tip. We got nothing good. The beef wasn't even well done, like I asked for it. As my husband & I continued our conversation, she even proceeded to take our drinks from the table! Not that she refilled them when needed anyway. She even rushed us off our table. She actually said "time to go home"!!! If she was joking, she certainly did not have a good enough rapport with us to be able to joke this way. This was our first visit and our last. I would not recommend this place to anyone. It was $70-some wasted. And yes, we did give her the proper 17% tip anyway. Though she did not at all deserve it!!!

I took my daughter to Sushi Japon for sushi for her birthday, based on the recommendations listed here that it was "good for kids". What a joke! Very quiet and no children's menu! I ended up spending $10.95 for chicken teriyaki for my 8 year old son. The prices for the sushi were ok, but the sushi was average at best! I don't know who these people are who recommended this place as "Fabulous" sushi, but they need to go someplace that really serves good sushi, like Mushashino's or Korea Garden, or Suzi's China Grill.

My family and I went to Sushi Japon one evening because it was close to the hotel my parents were staying in. None of us had ever been, and we were a little concerned at the lack of cars outside on a Saturday evening. However, the food was some of the best I have ever had! The Volcano and Moon Night rolls are both fabulous! The people we interacted with were friendly. The prices are quite reasonable, as are the portions. I would recommend to any sushi lover!

Ushi Sushi may have won Best of in the Chronicle, but this place is still my favorite. The sushi tastes wonderful, and their tempura is out of this world. I can't believe that this place was a Shoney's either, because it feels nice and relaxed inside, but still modern. Not too expensive, just perfect.

This restaurant deserves much bigger crowds. The owners and staff are friendly and fun, and the food is wonderful. The sushi melts in your mouth.

I've had good sushi other places, but the atmosphere was stuffier. The people at Japon really make you feel welcome.

The lunch specials are a great deal--a lot of excellent food for the price.

My husband and I have been visiting sushi japon for a year and have never been disappointed. In fact, this is the only place we'll eat it now. The food and service has always been exceptional and I have never encountered the pretentiousness that others have.

sushi japon is the place where you won't feel left over although you come by yourself. Sushi chef and servers are very friendly, and food are very fresh. They got their original rolls that no other sushi places have. Highly recommended sushi restaurant if you want to enjoy the real Japanese style sushi-eating environment.

I've been eating here for the past year or so and the food is great. The atmosphere is private, yet comforting. Whether alone or with a friend, I like to sit at the bar and the chef is always in a great mood and very attentive. I think the food is great for the price. Take advantage of their lunch specials and happy hour specials. This place is definitely my tummy's sanctuary :-)

One wouldn't expect this off the highway restuarant to have fabulous sushi. We were quite surprised. The service was great and the food was even better. We ordered the catapillar roll, edamame, and miso soup. The catapillar roll not only looked good but tasted superb. One should also go during happy hour. The prices are great. I intend to come back to this spot.

Their sushi is the most consistently fresh I've had in Austin. That's in comparison to 7 other sushi restaurants. (Except Uchi, which I could only afford once!)

The flavors are beautifully balanced whether I've ordered the maki, hand rolls, or tempura rolls. The sushi rice is perfectly seasoned too.

Ignore the location among I-35 diners, the interior is elegant. The lunch specials are an incredible bargain, the quality and taste are worth twice the price.
