A lovely mess of a store with TONS of books and a MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE owner, Ross.

I find myself returning to Bay Street Books just to goof around and read in one of the chairs or at the table. Or maybe to just talk with Ross. He is blessed with a quick wit and great subtle sense of humor.

I see someone complaining about Ross, and maybe THAT visitor was having a bad day because he is such fun that EVERY business owner up and down the street stops by to say HI some time during the week.

Prices are LOWER than the former Shorey's in Seattle.

I love this book store! So many books - so little time... it is crowded and the lighting is not the best, but it is in an old building and the money is obviously spent on inventory (what true bibliophile can't love that?). The owner is knowledgeable and interested in you and your reading tastes, and has personally selected every title in the place - a real treasure in today's world. For some great books and really fair prices- step out of the cookie-cutter world of Barnes and Noble and walk on the wild side... it will feed your head.

Anyone with an interest in books, anyone with an interest in life, anyone with curiosity--will enjoy your time with Ross in Bay Street Books.

Plus, his prices are way lower since he uses his on-line store as the guide, and reduces it for in-store sales.

He is the most well-read book store owner I have ever encountered. Ross is pretty well informed and his intelligence and exceptional memory of books read make him an interesting person for a chat.

Yes, there are well-organized and categorized books by the thousands. BUT I LOVE THE FLOOR STACKS! These are arrivals that Ross has not yet listed for his on-line business.

Just my weird way, but the messy stacks of incoming books are fun to poke through. I have found a lot of good stuff there, and PRICES ARE VERY FAIR in this store.

Ross the owner is the most knowledgeable person I've ever met in regards to books. So what if the place is a little cluttered and tight, the dude is the man. aren;t most true bookies looking for offbeat stuff and experiences?

Go there and grow your mind.

A lot of you ninnies complain about no best sellers and no religion books;
whining about the lack of order and a "cranky" staff.

Perhaps Bay Street Books isn't flowing with your average romance novel filled with heaving bosoms and fidelity-obsessed women,
but instead leans towards the classics that real literature fanatics feast upon like Kosinski, Mishima, and Nabokov-
take that to your best seller list. As for religious books, maybe you're blind? Ross has everything from paper back and hard backed Korans to a plethora of bibles.

There is always something new to come in to, and Ross, who is actually
a very good friend to all of his patrons, recommends only what he thinks you would like. He actually takes time to talk to you, and from that tries to pinpoint something that might tickle your fancy. He has yet to supply me with a bad book.

I'm not sure what most of you are looking for, but it seems like the negative comments come from people with a burr up their butt.
Bay Street Books is a lovely place- crammed with books, dim lighting, and a loud heater in the winter- any real reader should feel right at home.

A fine little book store. Nice selection. Not cheep but not not expensive and only quality editions in fine shape are sold. FAIR PRICES. If you want cheep go to Goodwill and dig though the Readers Digest Condensed books. Good luck on that.
A bit cluttered but clean. More books than shelves. I myself find books in piles to be quite normal. OK maybe the lighting is a bit dim but it's Port Orchard Washington, the entire area is a bit dim. I like the shop.
The staff is friendly and helpful. Not necessarily cheery at all times. I can see Ross coming off as cranky if you hit him wrong but I assure you he is a very nice man, well read, helpful and very knowledgeable.
Since right across the bay is Puget sound Naval Shipyard there is a great selection of military non fiction. Not to say the fiction is lacking. A bunch O good books.

EVERYONE wants T R Caspell
mr. Toads wild ride. Todd Royall Caspell
RIDE LOTS Tord and sundry
(expressed opinions not necessarily of
my brain)

I almost kicked myself when I discovered that I had been walking past this great used bookstore all these years. A quick pop inside and Wow, it's like he has everything. I found some great science fiction collections that I have been looking for and an old out of print book by an author my uncle loves. I'm gonna go back.

I disagree with the other reviewers. I found the owner to be knowledgeable, helpful and very interesting to speak with. After talking to him for a few minutes, he pulled a book off his shelf and said, "You'll love this," and he was right. I will definitely go back.

expensive, crowded, bad lighting, to dark. I like to take my time and browse when I look for books. I didn't feel comfortable doing that here because its so small and nobody else was shopping. There is a nice independent book shop next store.

Finally open after two years of setting the place up but still doesn't seem to have any set hours. Run by an unreliable, unpleasant man who gives me the creeps. No best sellers and few bargains on these messy shelves.

PROS: books are wrapped in plastic
CONS: limited selection, no set hours, messy, unpleasant

High prices on USED books that go for less than a dollar at thrift store down the road. Owner talks down to you like you're an idiot and doesn't seem to have a clue what he's doing. Refuses to stock best sellers or religious books!

PROS: none
CONS: overpriced crap, unpleasant staff, unorganized, no best sellers or religion

Bay Street Books is located in downtown Port Orchard. They have a variety of books to choose from for almost everyone. From gardening to fishing to cooking and travel. The list goes on. The staff is friendly and very helpful.

Even though this store is small, they have definately taken advantage of all their space. They mostly have paperbacks, and have custom shelves to fit them. Their prices are reasonable, and that makes this place a must for anyone wanting to feed their reading habit. I only gave them 3 stars as they need to clean up the store a bit, and also work on the lighting.
