Having read many reviews regarding Dr. Schaffer, (from multiple Web Sites) it is unfortunate such 'Review' Web Sites cannot discern the difference between an unfounded (likely fabricated) negative review of Dr. Schaffer and the true Reviews of Dr. Schaffer.. Dr. Schaffer is of the VERY BEST, when it comes to Veterinary Medicine! Dr. Schaffer and his staff are passionate about what they do, and anyone who says otherwise, I would STRONGLY question the motive of their critique. In the (nearly 50) years of my life, I have patronized several veterinarians. If a person lives anywhere near West Seattle, Dr. Schaffer is where a person should take their pet/s. There is no one I have recommended to Dr. Schaffer, who has not returned ecstatic from the care they / their pet received!

This is the vet to go as far as I am concerned. They are very concerned for your animals, obviously love pets, and are extremely matter of fact. I have had two instances of my dog having a sick or upset stomach, and this last time was really cause for concern. They were worried they might have to refer me to an overnight clinic because his samples were cause for concern, but fortunately, that ended up not being the case. Both times I have gone, I've had to get prescription meds for him as well as bland foods and each time I've come away amazed at how much I didn't have to pay. Fair prices, a knowledgable staff, and everything you could want in a vet.

Dr. Shaeffer is my neighborhood vet, and believe it or not, one of my dogs LOVES to visit his office. He treats my pets like they are his own (and yeah, my beagle is a sucker for anyone who gives him a treat). My visits with both dogs and kitties have ranged from running through the front door with a dog who had just been hit by a car, to routine ear cleaning. Some of Admiral Vet's prices are relatively higher than other places and with just one veterinarian sometimes it can be hard to get a last minute appointment, but the benefits of a true "neighborhood" vet make it worth it.

They won't steal your money, over-medicate or over-intervene, but will give your pet, sane, compassionate, thorough care. We had a serious situation and they handled it kindly and did the minimal yet advised us about what could be upcoming. Another vet's estimate was five times higher!

I adopted three kittens from a local shelter. They developed horrible URIs. I saw three vets before I saw Dr. Shaffer. Long story, but one of the vets I hold responsible for the death of one of the cats, one seemed not to like to touch cats, and the last spent all of a minute and a half with my very sick cat, actually leaving the room while I was still speaking to him.

Dr. Shaffer's office was pleasantly different. There was absolutely no wait and the entire staff was very soothing to my very sick kittens, keeping up constant reassuring and gentle touches the entire time the kitties were on the table. He wandered in with a mug of coffee and a blunt yet caring manner, and I knew immediately the kittens were in good hands. He was honest with me about the severity of the illness, but offered good instructions about home care and the kittens made it through just fine.

The staff are all friendly. The whole office has a pleasant informality that puts you at ease during a stressful time. This is the way vet's offices used to be -- compassionate, no-nonsense care at reasonable prices. So, don't be put off by the low-tech atmosphere. After sampling other vets that came highly recommended but were a huge disappointment, I found my go-to place in West Seattle.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy parking, knowledgeable, good table-side manner

I just took my dog in to get his nails trimmed. The two ladies in the office were very nice. They took my information and I got my dog's nails trimmed almost right away.

The nightmare started when they began to clip my dogs nails. It took all three of them and the first thing they did was pick him up and lay him on his side. Naturally, when they put him in that defensive position, he started freaking out. I had to leave because I couldn't watch what they were doing to him. The vet clipped each nail three times, thereby prolonging my dog's torture.

I went back in to check on him and I could hear him crying. My dog has never acted that way before and I've taken him to a dog grooming place to get his nails trimmed before this. Of course, the other place didn't hold him down.

When I went in to get him, they were looking at his face because it was bleeding. Yes, bleeding on the cheek. He bit through his own cheek during the procedure. And the best part is that when I told them that they said that they couldn't see where the bleeding was coming from. I could and I hold no medical degree. Actually, the vet said that he couldn't have bit through his cheek because that's not where his teeth are.

As I sit at my computer writing this, my dog is bleeding from his cheek, so yes, that is what happened and yes, obviously that IS were his teeth are.

I would say that these people are dangerously incompetent and I would not recommend them.

Oh, and I paid $18 for the nail trim which is a ridiculous price even if they'd done a great job.

I don't know WHAT Alex K is talking about below! My guess he/she is confusing this clinic with another animal care facility.

I have three pets--two cats and a dog--and all of them have seen Don since kittenhood or puppyhood.

My family first discovered Dr. Shaffer when my four year old daughter's hamster, Rosie, started convulsing unexpectedly. We rushed her down the street to the nearest vet, and Dr. Shaffer performed chest compressions (and everything short of mouth to mouth!) like a seasoned ER doctor. Though, sadly, the hamster didn't make it, Dr. Shaffer was professional and kind and didn't even charge us. The fact that this man was so serious about a sick hamster (I was actually kind of chuckling, because it seemed silly to be there) completely sold me. We have taken our animals there ever since. He is an animal lover to the core.

His staff genuinely care about animals and their owners, are up to date on their research, and are awesome during an exam or procedure. They are friendly, answer any questions I may have and are completely willing to squeeze us in (or stay late!) to check out a problem or alleviate a concern.

All of my animals have been spayed/neutered by Dr. Shaffer and his staff, and they have never even shown a glimpse of poor pain management--they all had quick recoveries and showed little signs of pain. Again, Alex must've confused this place with somewhere else.

My friend, sister and I all have used Admiral Veterinary for over 15 years - we all live in different parts of Seattle now and still will drive to West Seattle to use Don Shaffer and his staff for our animals. Dr. Shaffer is the best !

Dr. Shaffer is the best vet I have ever been to! He is really down to earth and loves all the animals. My dog is really nervous by nature, but he is so patient with her. His staff is awesome and his prices are reasonable.

Admiral Veterinary that's where. Dr. Shaffer has been my pets doctor for many years. He has reasonable prices and his care of animals is out of love and profession not just money. He has a great staff who have adopted many a 3 legged cat of old dog who knows no tricks. Located in West Seattle just across the street from Blockbuster it is a local establishment that has served our neighborhood for many years.

I have had pets or been responsible for the
health of pets for the last 38 years. I have been
using Dr. Shaffer since 1990 when I moved
to Seattle. I have had cats and dogs come
and go, seen them thru illness and death.
But I've never seen any veterinary hospital
as Dr. Shaffer's. My cats would come home
traumatized after being neutered until mine
went to the Admiral Veterinary Hospital.
It was incredible. They were happy, alert
and went right back to cat activities. My
animals never even flinched when they
had shots. As an animal lover, and you
are in the Seattle area, its worth the
trip to West Seattle.
