Alpine Valley is a good spot for several activities for those of us residing in the Chicagoland area. It's only about a 2 1/2 hour drive and has great ski slopes in winter, and arguably one of the best outdoor concert venues in the country. It's also just outside the resort town of Lake Geneva, so there's always plenty to do.

Alpine Valley is a resort that serves many purposes. First of all, it is most known for it's awesome ski trails in the woods/wilderness. The trails are great, just make sure you know what you're doing and don't end up like Sonny Bono. Secondly, they have multiple music concerts of the summer. Thirdly, you can expect a quality haunted house in October. The food is good, but the price for everything runs a bit high.
PROS: quality
CONS: price

All sorts of acts come through here, from jam bands to country to kids music to classical. Get there early and enjoy the parking lot scene where everything from jewelry to grilled cheese sandwiches can be found. Don't bother with the pavillion seats, just grab some lawn space and stretch out... save you some money too. Parking is simple, but leaving is a pain (time-consuming) since only a couple of ways out.
