The music box offers a broad range of films, from silent movie era to cult hits of the eighties. They do it with style, in a massive old-timey theater complete with velvet curtains and, when appropriate, live organ music. Yes, organ music. They're that awesome. It's a bit of a haul to get to on public transportation, especially if you're seeing a midnight movie and want to be able to go home afterward, but is well worth the trip.

The Music Box is an awesome place, and shows great movies that i love. However, it doesnt show very many at a time, so that lessens the amount of great cinema that can be screened. All in all this is a great place for independent cinema. Anyone who likes movies that are a bit off the beaten path would love the Music Box!

The Music Box Theatre is great for seeing niche or classic movies. They have matinees and midnight showings for Hitchcock and other classic directors. The occasional gorefest, as well. Once or twice or a year they will have a sing-a-long for the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. Worth the trip at least once. The theatre itself is very old and a bit rundown. Surprising since its surrounded by yuppieville.

PROS: Rocky Horror midnight showings
CONS: Needs to be renovated.

Although this movie theatre is best known for its sing-along performances of "Sound of Music" and "White Christmas," this theatre shows some really interesting films throughout the year, including foreign offerings and classics. The building itself is from the glory days of movie going, but it has had some health issues (rodents), which has taken some of the glory away.

PROS: sing along movies and great foreign films
CONS: health issues

A year-round film festival is their slogan. Indeed this is true, whether you're into old film classics, film noir, or alternative or foreign films, this is the place for you. Their architecture will take you back in time and so will their pipe organ which is used for special events. Street parking is available but is scarce at times.

Music Box is probably one of my favorite theatres to go to in the city. The theatre is re-modeled and it looks beautiful. You really feel like you are in the old times. They play great classic films and indie films if you are into that. It's really neat because sometimes they show films with organ music. They also have a discount card that you should get if you go there frequently.

When you see a classic film on the big screen at the Music Box you will feel like you are going back in time. This is one of Chicago's most gorgeous in-use old theatres. The lobby and main theatres are beautifully restored. I am always impressed with the selection of films being shown here at any given time. They are usually the first to get a lot of restored films. Be on the look-out for special film festivals like the one I saw on Orson Welles. Also, sometimes they show movies with a live organ player. Their discount card is well worth it if you plan on seeing movies often.

My only complaints are that the AC tends to be cranked, the snacks are over-priced and the seats are not the most comfy (rickety old velvet kind). Parking can be tricky in this area as well. The theatre offers paid parking at a school across the street, but it is also too steep, especially if there happens to be a Cubs' game.

What can I say, The Music Box shows all the best indie, art and limited release films. Also look them up for re-releasing classics up on the big screen that you might never have a chance to see anywhere else. My two favorite experiences include "Gone With The Wind" with a real live organist playing the overture and intermission music as they did when the movie was first released. And "Sing Along" "West Side Story", where they display the lyrics and encourage you to sing along. The Music Box never disappoints.

PROS: Buy a Music Box Discount Card and Save Money
CONS:

This is one of the few remaining classic theaters with a style remaining from 50 years ago. The movies shown are classic movies or independent films. The seat are not the most comfortable, but the charm and glow in the dark stars on the ceiling make it worth a visit.
