I just don't get it - why do people make a big deal out of such a rundown, trashy pier? I know it used to be famous so if you're going to re-live past pop culture that's one thing, but in and of itself, SM Pier is disgusting. There is not one shop/restaurant worth entering, the 'street performers' are basically Promenade wannabes who couldn't make the grade, and the amusement park has no allure/nostalgic value for anyone over the age of 4. On top of this, there is a depressing, filthy air about the place.

If you want to shop or see street performers go to the 3rd St. Promenade; if you want charm, go to Main St.; if you want a pier, go to Venice Pier; if you want wacky people, go to Venice Beach. But
save yourself the time and money and pass on Santa Monica Pier.

I like Santa Monica, but the Pier itself is vastly overrated. Any New Jersey boardwalk puts it to shame. As an easterner, I was shocked in how little this pier offered. I notice the positive reviews mention how the beach is nice, the pedestrian mall is nice, etc. All true, but the pier itself is not on my list of things to see when I am in LA

My daughter loves riding the Santa Monica Pier carousel. The carousel is a beautiful one that reminds me of the olden, vintage carousels with painted horses, mirrors, brass poles and sparkling lights. The music played is lively and fun. It is also an inexpensive way for the small ones to have fun over and over again.

The manager Ruby is the worst! My kids didn't know the outside horses didn't move so they thought it was broken. When we asked if they can go on again--she told us that it was our fault for not knowing better! I'm amazed how rude and nasty she was. We would definitely never return.

This was our first time at the Santa Monica Carousel and we didn't know that the outside horses didn't move. When we arrived, the carousel was not moving. There should be some signs or when we bought the tickets, the ladies should inform us. I refused to buy more tickets out of principle. I should not be forced to pay again out of dissatisfaction, rather it should be for the need to repeat a great experience.

It is a shame that such unthinkable customer service could happen at the Santa Monica Carousel.

If you go to the pier expecting a super cool stretch of bars and restaurants out over the water then you're going to be disappointed. The pier is definitely not a place to go out to, but it is a great landmark, and worth checking out. Kids will love the park that's there and it's small enough that the park is not an all day commitment in the slightest. If you're in the area it's worth checking out, at least just to waste some time, but I'm a fan.

I get that the pier is one of the most iconic parts of Santa Monica and the L.A. area as a whole, but to me, it was no more special or different than any other beachfront amusement park I?ve been to. Typical rides, arcades, game stands and carnival treats, though the new energy-efficient Ferris wheel is pretty cool to see (a lot more lights than the old one). Bottom line, if you?re looking to walk around Santa Monica for a bit or are in the area and have time to spare, this place is a nice stop, but not a must visit in my opinion. One thing I will say for it though, it does have a great atmosphere for a first date!

You may remember this carousel from the movie "The Sting" or many other appearances. The original was a Byzantine-Moorish California style, designed and built in 1916. This one was moved to Santa Monica in 1939 from the old Ocean Park Pier. The current carousel was built in 1922. And in 1990 it was completely restored to the "like new" current condition. It is terrific.

Next to the carousel is a machine that prints out your biorhythm. Oh, I know it is silly but give it a try. Run a strip for you and another for your significant other who is standing beside you. Compare. It may be a dangerous day if you are BOTH at a peak. Be careful out there!

The pier is a landmark for Santa Monica, but it's good only for a peek. I was disappointed when we visited as it was dingy (I know it's old) and very average. It's also super windy which made it unenjoyable. I'd also like to mention that it is overpriced, I had a bad funnel cake. Some performers were pathetic as well. We didn't spend much time there, but SKIP IT! The beach is great, but that's a totally seperate thing.

I have many fond memories at the pier. I remember during my high school years, strolling around the carnival, playing the little games. Also, during the summertime they have this awesome film screening series that they play on the dock? I remember two summers ago, I watched ?Top Gun? and ?Westside Story.? And it was nice just coming out with a sleeping bag and some snacks for a night of free entertainment.

I've been down on the beach at night many times, and one night we decided to take a walk along the beach towards the pier fairly late. We were pleasantly surprised to find everything still open past 10pm and decided to take a look around. Their arcade is neat, and their ferris wheel is pretty romantic! They now have a Bubba Gump's and it's open very late. Towards the very end of the pier, the aroma of fish is overpowering and it's a bit too sketchy in the dimly-lit areas of the pier. But it's really close to the Promenade and was very fun!

Our visit to the Santa Monica Pier was an unexpected surprise. We stumbled upon it since our hotel was located in Santa Monica, and were really happy we went to it! We went to the pier both during the day and night, and each time, the atmosphere was completely different. The beach itself is beautiful white sand, and from the pier, we had an excellent view of the ocean. The many, varied shops were fun to browse, and the amusement park added to the atmosphere. We ate at the Mexican restaurant at the end of the Pier, and had a wonderful dining experience overlooking the ocean.

PROS: Beautiful and fun

Ride the roller coaster on a sunny day and you'll see a spectacular view of Santa Monica's beach and pier. They have restaurants and some family atrractions which I thought was great. There is always a crowd here so be prepared to beat them to whatever you'll be doing. =)

Santa Monica Pier has all sorts of activities for all ages! You can go there to eat (seafood, mexican, american, or just fast food...) all day. The park has some roundabouts for all ages. It ranges from the drop zone tower for extreme sentations to the carrousel for little kids. You can shop, relax and enjoy the ocean... and some people even fish there! All in all, it's a fun place for everybody! They have some performances on the weekends. Parking lot is a bit pricey but you can either street park or park further out around 3rd street promenade mall.

Santa Monica pier should be one of the better known landmarks in southern california. There are all kinds of things to do there, whether it be to go to the aquarium or ride the carousel.

Parking usually isn't too difficult, but it does cost money. You can always park around 3rd street and walk to the pier. There are some restaurants and arcades on the pier, but it's also a nice place to just sit and chill during a warm summer night.

I have been to the Santa Monica pier several times now and it is a fun place to spend some time with the kids. They have plenty of activities to choose from like the amusement rides, arcades, merry-go-round and window shopping. The rides though are a bit pricey and so are the food prices as well.

Santa Monica Pier is a really good tourist spot because it has both the beach which is a signature of Los Angeles as well as a fun filled pier. The pier includes a carousel, arcade and an amusement park filled with games. They also have special events on occasion so its good to check their calendar frequently.

This little park has it all! The beach, the pier, a ferris wheel, roller coaster, Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Promenade close by, all the food you could possibly want - and flavors from all over the world! Watch out for the beggars, they are the only thing keeping Santa Monica Pier from being World Class in status. Bring your camera, you may see some famous faces or a gorgeous sunset!

PROS: Centrally Located on the Coast
CONS: Can be Crowded and Pricey

It's a great amusement place. I go there almost every weekend with all my family. There's anything from wheel, carousel to spot with machines to play. It's all good not only for kids but for adults as well.If you're an athletic type, you can ride a bike or roll skate, which you can rent right there if you don't have one.Love it.

Santa Monica Pier is a great place to take the kids. The amusement park is a lot of fun. It is a small carnival, complete with ferris wheel, rollercoaster, and games. There is also an arcade and a carousel.

During the summer, there is a Twighlight Dance Series on Thursday nights on the pier. I strongly recommend checking this out. It's a free concert and the music is usually excellent.

We recently attended a baby shower at the Carousel and it is the perfect place to have a party. All the kids got arm bands so they could go on the carousel as many times as they wanted. Which is great because kids can get antsy at a grown-up party. Whenever they did, we'd go for a stroll on the board walk or another ride. I would only call the party space semi-private because although it was roped off, we did have people (either clueless or rude) walk right through the party. As far as I was concerned, it was just part of the fun.

PROS: Keeps the kids entertained
CONS: Party area is only semi-private

The Santa Monica Pier is a classic place to go on a warm weekend night and/or when you have out of town guests visiting. The sunsets here are beautiful and it's a pretty safe place near the beach. They have a number of rides here catered to younger children and the usual carnival food and games. You can make your way out to the end of the pier and see a spectacular view of the ocean. You can often see filming of an upcoming Hollywood movie and you'll see the local kids often hanging out here. The prices are a bit expensive for the rides, but the atmosphere is authentic. It's nice to see the area restored and preserved for future generations. The pier is a symbol of Santa Monica history that should be preserved for future generations.

The City of Santa Monica put a lot of work into restoring te Santa Monical Pier several years ago. I was so excited to see the area start to thrive, and to be able to bring our kids to the same places we enjoyed we young. The carousel has always been a highlight of the pier, and is a throwback to the boardwalks of the "olden days". There are old surfer tunes playing in that creepy carousel tone, which kids seem to love. The horses have been nicely maintained, and the speed of rotation comfortable but not threatening. I only wish the view was a little nice- you don't get to see a whole lot of the ocean when on the carousel.

I live in Oregon now, but I was born and raised in Santa Monica. Nothing makes me as homesick as seeing the Santa Monica Pier on television or in a movie. I watch some movies (Falling Down, Buddy System, L.A. Story, for instance) just for the Los Angeles landmarks.

i remember going here as a kid with my parents. though i don't hop on the antique classica carousel anymore, i still love the cotton candy and the fresh, greasy potato chips. not a huge fan of the crowds or the Pacific Park amusements, but for the adventurous: the pier is nice and quiet well past sunset.

The arcade is a good size, the carousel is always fun, and the ferris wheel offers a fun perspective of the beach from a different angle. Bike rental shops are nearby, and everyone from visitors to residents use the beach and Palisades Park to exercise or enjoy Bay views (which is probably the best thing about the area!). As others state, drawbacks include summer and weekend crowds, parking (can be expensive and hard to find, esp. weekends), the restaurants are overpriced and ho-hum, and the park/beach area does have a consistent homeless population. If you want a more pristine beach, head towards the Malibu area; if you want a really fun pier/boardwalk, go about 350 miles north to Santa Cruz; if you want people-watching, head down to Venice Beach.

It's definitely a fun place to go, but it is quite expensive. Parking is somewhat difficult, and each ride costs a ton of money. It is fun, though. And it is beautiful at night time to go on the Ferris Wheel over the beach. Just bring money if you want to do anything besides walk on a pier.

Santa Monica Pier. What's the hype about this place? There's nothing here that no other 'fair' wouldn't have. I'll admit, it's a nice beach, somewhere nice to eat, sit and talk, or even stare at the stars (as any other beach), but I'll have to say this isn't the BEST atraction Santa Monica has. There are games for kids to play, and stuffed animals you could win (just like any other theme park). The beach is clean, and so is everything else surrounding it, but i think this is REALLY over rated! It's great for kids and family, but it's REALLY small! You'd have more games and toys to win somewhere else. You'd probably be down seeing everything here in less than 30 or even 20 minutes! That's how small it is!

I love the Santa Monica Pier. It's definitely somewhere I always go when I have a day off work. My mom and I have had a tradition where she comes up from San Diego once a year just to go to the pier. There's so much to do from shops, rides, beach, people watching, artists, performers, eats, arcades...it's such a great atmosphere with the beach right there at your feet and so much to do and eat. There's fast food or sit down restaurants..whatever you prefer. There's definitely something fo everyone here. You're missing out if you don't check it out!

Santa Monica Pier is a great place for outings with friends, family and lovers. Go during the day for fun with family and friends. They have a full arcade complete with air hockey and many midway games. Just off the pier there is a park complete with play equipment 4 the kids. At night or dusk is the place to go with your partner. Take a ride on the Ferris wheel and relax. Take a stroll on the beach and cuddle up on the sand. The food at this place is a bit pricey, so I would recommend a picnic. Parking is a pain and a bit expensive, but it's better than going to citywalk.

The Santa Monica Pier is a connection spot for many people. I found that my wife remembers it fondly as a place visited many times where family fun was on the menu. Though the pier walk is shorter due to the ravages of time and El NINO; its beach hasn't shrunk much - just the availability of parking. It was still worth the trip to talk and people watch. It was a bit cold for us, but the water was perfect for taking a dip. As arcades go, the value was just not there, but the Ferris-wheel still spins, the rollercoaster rolls, and a restored merry-go-round completes the ambiance of this timeless treasure.

Having visited Santa Monica Pier several times, as well as Santa Monica City, I must say that I have always found the people of Santa Monica most pleasant and cheery! It is always amazing to me to find such a pleasant atmosphere and for this reason, I rate Santa Monica Pier as one of my most favorite places in California!

The Pier is a likely spot I take people to when they visit me from out of town. We park and walk along the beach toward the pier. It's a nice, relaxing walk, and we can experience the atmosphere that surrounds the pier.

While I never tried the Ferris Wheel, though it does look fun. We tried the Carousel, and that was fun. We walk up and down the pier. Looking at vendor pictures and what-not. Soaking in the fun and entertainment. Sometimes we would walk toward the back and enjoy the breeze off the ocean - watching the sailboats in the distance.

After we finish with the pier, we walk to the 3rd Street Promenade, which is nearby, to do a little shopping and to have a snack.

Though a lot of work has been done to improve Santa Monica Pier's appearance, safety, and cleaniness, it is still ugly, gang-infested, a dirty. Rather than going there, try going south to the Manhattan Bearch Pier or head north to Malibu.

This beach isnt any more special than any other beach out here on the pacific coast. Wow it has a pier. Big whoopdy do? All there is...is a bunch of overpriced restaurants and a beach covered with dirty diapers and syringes! They charge you around 7-8 bucks just to park your car so you can use a beach that God created and meant us all to use for free. Geez thanx.... But no thanks!

I love to come here to play around and meet people and sometimes.. i come alone to stare off at the dark black sea at night. I find that no other spot in the world gets me thinking like i do here. A great spot to check out!

SANTA MONICA PIER! It's the place to be. It's BEAUTIFUL in the late afternoon (especially towards dusk). From the pier you can view: Malibu,Palos Verdes Penensula, and other parts of the coast. While you're there make sure you visit the "3rd street Promenade" 2 blocks away. You will love the entertainment. (hey fellows its easy on the pocket book and all and you will have a very good evening)

GO VISIT YOU'LL LOVE IT

p.s. get there before 4pm and park in the Santa Monica mall for free. After 4 its a whole $3

This is a good place to visit once, but there really isn't a need to go back. Restaurants are average and it's usually crowded. The only thing that separates the pier from any other kiosk-laden area is that it is on a pier.

Say what you will about the area being too touristy, too crowded or too generic, but this really is a nice spot. Sit atop the ferris wheel at Sunset and then tell me you don't believe me.

Skip the restaurants -- none of them are anything special (though Rusty's can be nice for drinks and live music if you get there before the cover charge). The games are OK, though I don't know that anybody really ever wins anything.

Mostly, this is all about ambiance. Troll around, venture into the sand, forget about the rest of the world.
