When you need eye care, I highly recommend Alabama Eye Services, especially Dr. Carter. They are located just outside of Vestavia Shopping Center. There is ample free parking. I had to wait a little for my first visit, but when I needed to come in for an urgent matter later, they saw me immediately. The staff is very friendly and you are assisted by several people. Initially, you are given an eye test, glaucoma test and other testing, depending on your needs. Dr. Carter (or other staff members) see you personally and give further examination. Dr. Carter is very caring and listens to your particular problems and discusses several alternatives, if necessary. He is very thorough in his questioning in trying to make a diagnosis. I felt very comfortable with Dr. Carter and staff and will definitely make a yearly visit for my eyesight needs. Additionally, there is an office downstairs to fill your eyeglass needs.
It is very difficult to come to a new city and find a physician that is caring and compassionate. I was recommended to Dr. Larry Gazzini at Brookwood Internists in the Brookwood Hospital Complex and have am so thankful. Dr. Gazzini listens carefully to you then responds to each and all of your needs. When I had some concerns later and needed to call him, he returned my call within the half-hour. After your initial consultation and testing, you get your results over the phone not from some nurse or assistant, but in a recorded message from Dr. Gazzini himself who tells you everything about your examination and the accompanying results. Dr. Gazzini and his staff put you at ease with any problems or concerns you may have.
When first enterting Mountain Brook Sporting Goods store, located in the Crestline Village shopping area, you get the feeling of a small town business. There are friendly people who greet you almost immediately (even if they're helping others) and, when you let them know what you're looking for, they can lead you right to it. The staff is willing to make suggestions and there is zero pressure if you just want to browse. There is a wide selection of Mt. Brook schools merchandise (tshirts, sweatshirts, etc), along with the terrific selection of sports goods (football, baseball, soccer and many others). It's such a nice change from the larger, colder feelings of the larger sports wherehouse-type stores that are so prevalent today. Parking can be difficult on the weekends due to the surrounding restaurants but don't give up.
After having been in an accident, the worst thing to have to worry about is shopping for an inexpensive auto body shop where they won't try to take advantage of the situation. I had a wonderful experience with Raj at Sherrill Auto Body. After explaining there would be no insurance involved (i.e. I would be paying), he gave me an estimate that was over $500 less than the previous one I received. He also offered me a free loaner car. When I picked up the car (in two less days than he had originally estimated), it looked like new. I found out that Sherrill is the oldest shop if its kind in the city, and for good reason.
Searching for a new mattress and box springs was a very daunting task for me. Happily, the staff at Bedzzz Express mad this miserable job more pleasant. There is plenty of convenient parking, and the sales staff asked what I was looking for, directed me to some choices, then allowed me to bounce up and down on any beds I wanted, for as long as I wanted. They answered all questions concerning longevity, cleanliness, etc. Once I named a price range with which I was happy, they didn't try to "upsell" me, either. I was very happy with my experience, especially the free frame and free delivery they offer. The bed showed up, on schedule, and the workmen were in and out in less than 10 minutes, leaving me with my new box spring and mattress. Highly recommended.
Angel Hair, Inc. is located in the charming village of Crestline, a suberb of Birmingham, AL. The stylists and other employees are always very courteous and friendly. Although the weekends can be difficult, I have never had a problem getting an appointment during the week. My haircuts are usually done by David, who is fast and terrific (I am usually in and out in less than 10 minutes with a great haircut). If you are a lover of French, you will love eavesdropping on the staff, many of whom are natives, as they banter back and forth. The prices are very reasonable and they offer all the standard hair/nail services of a salon.
Retina Consultants is the kind of business you hope you never need but are very happy to have when you do. A recent family emergency involving a detached retina sent us to the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham. A surgeon from Retina Consultants, Dr. John Mason, performed the surgery. He not only was able to give us comforting and exact explanation of what he would do, but also told us afterward what he had done, what the prognosis would be, and what steps needed to be further taken. When we needed to call several times during the following weeks, and, in one instance, make a emergency visit, he was always kind and compassionate and able to allay our fears. I would highly recommend Dr. Mason and his staff if eye surgery is ever necessary.
I have used Byte Size many times for my computer needs, both emergency and normal. The staff is incredibly nice and speaks non-computer talk (i.e. clear and concisely tells you what's wrong with your computer and how much it will cost to fix it). On one occasion, I thought I had lost everything and they were able to save it, and the price was under $60. There is usually someone in the shop as early at 7:30 so it's great if you have to drop in early before work. They also handle larger office situations, as well. I highly recommend byte size for simple tasks and life and death ones, too.
The Emmet O'Neal Library has been serving the Crestline and Mt. Brook communities for many years (at least 46 as I can attest!). A number of years ago, it underwent a massive rebuilding and is now a beautiful two-story building housing volumes of books, reference materials, magazines, videos and much more. The workers are very helpful and knowledgable and can make recommendations with ease. There is a great children's section, and readings for kids are periodically offered. Once a year, there is a book sale to benefit the library and I have purchased some incredible books (for incredibly low prices) in the past. The Emmet O'Neal is part of the Birmingham Public Library System so the catalog is offered on-line. You can sit at home and choose a book from any of the branches, enter it into your computer, and have it delivered to the Emmet O'Neal at no charge. You can renew on-line as well. There is ample parking adjacent to the building.
To paraphrase an old advertisement, you don't have to be Jewish to like the Birmingham Jewish Community Center. People of all faiths enjoy the large facility located adjacent to the affluent community of Mountain Brook. There is a beautiful fitness center which offers excellent hours and amenties comparable to an upscale gym. The Center has both outdoor and indoor pools, gymnasium, classes of all sorts, summer camp programs, theatrical productions, tennis courts, ball fields and lots more. In conjunction with the Center, there is a preschool, as well as the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School which goes from 1st to 8th grade.
