I love the FruitGuys -- we used to get their fresh fruit delivered to our office every week back in San Francisco. Every Tuesday morning we would all descend on the break room to snag some yummy fruit, it was such a great break to the day. So much better than chips and soda.
So, I was ecstatic to see them here in LA recently. I was volunteering at this beach clean-up thing and there was the "Banana Man" from the FruitGuys handing out free fruit -- apparently, they deliver to LA, and as I learned, the whole US now. Can't wait to get my office in on it.
Dr. Aliabadi is a wonderful OB/GYN, I really trust her. She is very bright, young enough to have a very "current" philosophy on childbirth (no episitomies, wants to work within your birth plan, etc.) but old enough to have a ton of experience and she's a mom herself so she really understands it all.
She delivers at Cedars and she owns her own practice, she is the only doctor -- so she is the person you see during pregnancy as well as delivery, you won't get some doctor you don't know. I know this seems unbelievable but according to her, last year, she delivered 100% of her patients herself. When she takes vacation, she literally schedules it a year in advance and doesn't take patients due during that time.
Her staff is very sweet and efficient, we rarely wait more than 15 minutes at a scheduled appointment. Her chief nurse, Kim, in particular, is very caring. If you need to call in with a quesiton in between visits, she always follows up and is genuinely concerned about your well-being.
I highly recommend her, I really trust that she wants the best for me and my baby. She also does GYN as well, which I assume she's just as fantastic at, I will definitely continue to see her as my GYN after birth.
The Beverly Hills Playhouse teaches solid, fundamental acting lessons and I learned some great lessons there and watched their approach advance alot of students. It's a good acting education and they take an action-oriented approach, it's not just about acting in class, it's about getting work. My only complaint is that because it's more than just an acting class, it tends to be a little bit of a "life" class as well, which for me, got kind of old after awhile. But at the same time, those life lessons helped alot of people and I believe they offer them truly to help people not control them. (I've certainly seen a lot of actors be held back not by their talent but their attitude and the BHP makes this part of their instruction.) But if you're a little older, know who you are and are established, the BHP pontificating on how to live your life can get a little tiresome.
If you're new to LA, this is a great place to take your first LA acting class, it gives you an instant network; the other students are friendly and they will help you figure out how to navigate the industry, and it gives you motivation and skills to try to actually get work, not just practice it.
This is an adult class, they do not offer children's classes.
L'Ezu Atelier has absolutely wonderful bridal gowns -- elegant and lovely. Beautiful materials and workmanship, so as you might expect, expensive (but not as expensive as some.) They have probably 20-30 different styles to try on, but all are custom made for your body (not off the rack.) The staff is warm and friendly and made me feel comfortable throughout the entire (multi-fitting) process. If I wasn't happy with how my dress was falling or looked, they fixed it, there was never any conflict. Wonderful, no-stress experience.
Just took my dog to Dr. Vasquez after reviewing his Insider Pages reviews and I really liked him. He was very caring, friendly and thorough. I had lots of questions (my dog has a history of cancer) and he took the time to answer them all -- I didn't feel rushed or patronized. His techs were also really sweet and helped me locate a few suspicious spots on the dog I had wanted to show the doctor but couldn't find once I got there (doesn't that always happen?) His office staff was also really nice. And as a bonus, when I looked at the bill, it was half of what I used to pay in Santa Monica.
The only thing I found a little weird is that they don't take appointments; however, ultimately, this isn't really a problem, I picked a non-busy time (Tues-Thurs) and called to find out how long the wait was before I went over. I ended up waiting only 10 minutes. I suggest calling before going if you're going for a routine visit.
PROS: Good care at a reasonable price.
CONS: No appointments even for routine visits - check wait time before going
Seriously, Jazmine gave me the best haircut I've ever had and she has the perfect attitude for a hairstylist: she wants to do what you want but she also has an opinion and she will guide you. She's not one of those people you have to explain all the details to -- she knows what will work on your face and with your type of hair, all while staying within the parameters of what you want. I just had my first cut with her (based on her Insider Pages recs) and will never go anywhere else, I totally trust her. As a bonus, she's easy to talk to, and totally unpretentious.
Elephant recently moved us from the Westside to the Pasadena area and they did a very nice job. Their rates were the best that I found for a three man crew, plus they give a "not to exceed" estimate, so I knew exactly what to expect in terms of price and, in fact, I ended up paying less than the estimate because they finished quicker than estimated.
They packed us one day and then moved us the next -- they do just moves as well if you don't want packing. The packers were very nice and we had no broken items. I also felt very comfortable with the movers -- totally trustworthy and careful with our belongings.
BONUS: If you purchase their boxes (whether you pack them or they do), you can return them for a full refund if they're in good condition! No one else offered that service -- it provided a good deal of savings over other full service movers.
My only reservation was that the person who did our estimate slightly misjudged the volume of stuff we had and all of it would not fit in the truck they sent the day of the move. So, we had to make several trips in our cars to take the few remaining items that did not fit in the truck.
Even given that unexpected problem, I would still recommend them, I was very happy with their service -- but the mix-up with the truck size is the only reason I can't give them 5 stars.
PROS: Good price for 3-man crew, box return/refund program, honest, reliable
CONS: Estimator misjudged size of truck needed, had to move a few items via car
The owner, who has always been in the store when I have been there, is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They have an enormous selection of wedding stationery across all price ranges. Really cute stuff.
Can you live on the Westside and not know Diddy Riese? I don't think it's possible -- $1 ice cream sandwiches made with two freshly baked, hot cookies of your choice and your favorite flavor of Dreyer's ice cream -- how could you not know about that? I'm salivating just writing this review.
There is always a line, but it moves fast. If ice cream sandwiches aren't your style, you can always just buy the cookies -- at $0.35 per cookie, you can't leave without a few.
The best frozen yogurt in the LA area is here. I live nowhere near Pasadena, but I will go out of my way to get to 21 Choices. They make their own, unique frozen yogurt flavors then mix them with toppings (a la Cold Stone). Even without toppings, theyogurt is excellent. The staff is extremely friendly and it's not just because they want a tip (they don't allow them!) They're so interested in you liking what you've selected that they have you sample it before they even give you your order.
