At a recent Friday office meeting, the boss treated us to a box of Yummy Cupcakes. Boy were they tasty!! I had the signature "Yummy Cupcake", which their website describes as "chocolate cake, topped with vanilla buttercream, rolled in dark chocolate sprinkles." The frosting to cake ratio is about 40/60 - picture a half jar of decadent, rich & creamy frosting on a small cake pedestal. If you enjoy a bite of cupcake with your frosting, this is the place for you!!
I have been coming to the North Woods Inn my whole life, and it's always a pleasant experience. The setting is a dimly lit back-woods lodge that is snowed-in 365 days a year. There's sawdust on the floor and you are encouraged to throw your peanut shells there too. The walls are adorned with deer trophies and olde-time portraits, and the ragtime soundtrack from the movie "The Sting" is piped in on a continuous loop. The sandwiches are reasonably priced (I like the beef dip), but the dinner entrees are a bit too pricey for what you get. The single best item on the menu is the cheesebread - don't leave without trying it! Very kid friendly and popular for family occasions, e.g. Mother's and Father's Day.
PROS: Amazing cheesebread! Fun atmosphere.
CONS: A bit pricey.
I highly recommend Misty at Studio 129 in Glendora for both men's and women's styles. I have been getting my haircuts with her since I got engaged to my wife, and my wife has been a client of Misty for about 10 years now. She is an intuitive stylist that can figure out what looks good on you with minimal questions, which is just how I like it!
PROS: Friendly, personable and talented stylist
Treasure Island recently transformed itself from a Disney-style family hotel into an adult playground by sexing up the free pirate battle and adding a burlesque club. While I preferred the family-friendly version, the new "TI" does have a major positive addition: the new Dishes buffet, complete with a BBQ station, Asian Fusion cuisine, a custom-tossed salad bar, a bakery and a grill. The lunch and dinner selections are great, but the breakfast buffet is the best, especially the amazing "mini donuts" made fresh every 15 minutes and dipped in chocolate, maple or cinnamon sugar. The hotel is in a good location on the Strip, near the Mirage and the new Wynn hotel. They also have a great online reservation website (www.treasureisland.com) with good room rates compared to most Strip hotels.
PROS: Amazing breakfast buffet w/ to-die-for mini donuts!
CONS: No longer ideal for families with kids
We hired Anthony DeVito to install new windows in our son's nursery room. It was not a straight replacement job, since we wanted a larger double window cut into the outside wall. In addition, we wanted new molding installed around the windows. All of this work was time sensitive due to the imminent birth of the baby. Anthony finished the entire project in two days, and he did a fantastic job! The windows are now the gorgeous centerpiece of the new nursery. Anthony mentioned that he is a general contractor, and we plan to have him back in the future to do other remodeling projects.
I drove round trip from LA to SF on Interstate 5 twice in the past year, for my brother's graduation and my sister's wedding. It's a long and boring 7 hour slog, and that's without traffic. The only salvation was this Drive-Thru Starbucks at the bottom of the Grapevine. On each trip I enjoyed a much needed Grande coffee fix, which helped make the drive do-able without falling asleep at the wheel. If only all Starbucks were Drive-Thrus, the world would be a much better place!
PROS: Drive-Thru Starbucks!
CONS: A bit crowded during peak driving hours
My wife and I decided to try Bella Sera after reading positive reviews on Insider Pages. We were not disappointed! The inside dinning area has a cozy atmosphere, and the outside garden patio (where we dined) has an Italian courtyard feel complete with decorative planter boxes and a small fountain. The place is run by Italians, and the food has an authentic taste. The complementary bruschetta with fresh tomato, basil and garlic is to die for, the Insalata Tricolore Salad with shaved Parmesan cheese is fantastic, and both of our pasta entrees were tasty. Order the Tricolore Crme Brulee for a perfect ending!
PROS: Authentic Italian food, romantic atmosphere, good prices
CONS: Service is a bit on the slow side
My family was fortunate enough to receive a delivery from Jacob Maarse Flowers after the birth of our son. The bouquet was magnificent! It contained a mix of roses, stargazer lilies, purple orchids, decorative kale, and other flowers that complemented each other beautifully. Several of the lilies and orchid buds were closed, and they opened gradually over the course of the next week to dramatic effect. With minimal water added, the flowers lasted over 2 weeks! The decorative glass vase was also perfect for the arrangement. My wife claims that this was most beautiful flower delivery she has ever received. If you can afford them, I would highly recommend Jacob Maarse Flowers.
PROS: Amazing flowers, artistic creations, long-lasting
CONS: Cost a bit more, but they are worth it for special occasions
Mike Parsons and Roof'N-It was highly recommended to me by my parents. My house had a very old and leaky roof in dire need of replacement, but I wanted the new tile roof to look like the old wood shake one. Mike offered several styles to choose from, and my wife and I decided on a Duralite tile that looks great on the house. Mike's crew was friendly, professional and finished on schedule. The price was also better than we expected.
PROS: Friendly, honest, professional, reasonable prices
We hired Raz to paint our new son's nursery room. The job involved 3 colors, painting built-in cabinets and installing a chair rail. Raz and his team did a great job in a short period of time. The nursery looks much better than the Pottery Barn photo we used as our model, and it's now our favorite room in the house. We highly recommend Raz if you're looking for a painter.
PROS: Thorough, professional, quick and friendly
