I live about a 2 miles from this new Price Chopper, and welcome it to the neighborhood. Previously, I had to drive to Stop and Shop near CCSU, or to Shaws on "the other side" of the Berlin Tpke. Neither was really that much further than the new P.C., but both were much more inconvenient to get to for many Newington residents.
The store itself is clean, and huge - it seems to have everything.
However, as for their "cafe", I would avoid it - I heard good things about it, but when I tried to get a cup of coffee there it seemed like they were only interested in serving other PC employees - as if the entire 'cafe' was set up to sell only to employees, not shoppers.
I also bought 2 slices of pizza there once, and they sucked.
My advice: If you want pizza, stop at Bertucci's or Elm Hill on your way home. If you want to have an okay cup of coffee while you shop, go to Stop and Shop (they have a Dunkin Donuts inside).
If you want a big clean competetive grocery store, go to P.C.
PROS: Good grocery store
CONS: Cafe not worth stopping at
I've been through this carwash dozens of times in my Acura and my wife's Escape. This car wash has a lot of options - wash your own car bays; touchless drivethrough; and my favorite, the regular old drive through car wash bay.
The prices are low compared to the Mobil and other nearby options, but best of all, you can almost always find a $2 or $3 off coupon at the local stop and shop or Shaws (back of the receipt) or in the Rare Reminder.
Also, if you tip them a buck or two, they write "T" on your windshield and seem to scrub your bumpers and tires more before you go into the drive-through part.
PROS: Good bargain - safe
I've had my taxes prepared by everyone from H&R Block to various SOHO tax accountants and preparers, but last April was the first year that I didn't feel dirty after doing my taxes. Mr. Daniele was a pleasure to do business with, and went so far as to help me prepare for not just next year, but for the next 50 years. I highly recommend his services for all your personal accounting needs. His fees for doing my taxes were reasonable - more than H&R block, but I believe it was less than $500 for my case.
FirstBoat.com made buying my first boat easy - I had information on insurance and financing, getting a boating licence, even ideas on what to name my first boat, all in one place!
PROS: Easy to access boating information
When we first moved to the neighborhood and dropped off our first load of drycleaning to this establishment, the owner called our house within a week to thank us for our business. The service has been top-notch ever since.
The only flaw is that they close at 6 pm, which isn't always convenient if you work normal business hours and are running a little late. However, the manager has told me repeatedly that I could call if I am running late and they will stay open for me!
PROS: Good service
CONS: Hours - could be open later.
With 5 barbers usually manning their stations, this place still has a 30 to 45 minute wait on most Saturday mornings for Joe, the shop's owner. A great men's barbershop - $15 is worth the price and includes warm shaving cream/cold blade shave on the back of your neck and on your sideburns.
They don't always remember your name, but they remember your hair when you go back so you don't have to explain anything.
PROS: A great men's barbershop
CONS: long waits on Saturday mornings
When I first saw the sign for the Powerhouse Gym, I was excited because of the location - it was on my way to work, and I didn't know it was there until I saw the billboard on the berlin turnpike.
When I saw the name of the gym, however, I was hesitent, because it sounded like a mecca for muscleheads. That turned out to be far from the truth. Sure, there are plenty of free-weight lifting body builders with their weight belts wrapped around their wastes, but there are also a large contingency of senior citizens and young-to-middle aged professionals that seem to work out there on a regular basis.
The price is somewhat reasonable (about $40/month for unlimited access, including many classes), especially considering there is almost never a line at any machines or equipment (at least not at 7 a.m.).
The hours are great - I think they are open from like 4 am til 10 at night!
The only disappointment is the men's lockerroom (can't speak for the women's). While it is bigger than Blast Fitness's locker room, the Powerhouse lockerroom could use an upgrade to bring it up to the level of the rest of the facilities. The lockers are too small for a suit on a hanger, and in the winter there is nowhere to hang them since everyone hangs their coats inside the lockerroom on the hooks near the door. The space is crowded if more than 2 people are using lockers near each other, and the showers look dirty with peeling paint. Also, there are only 2 full size showers which get crowded, and the 3 sinks are not enough to handle the morning commuter crowd.
If you go home to shower after your workout anyway, you'll be very pleased with this gym.
PROS: Big, lot's of stuff, no lines
CONS: locker room
I am currently taking classes towards an MBA at CCSU in New Britain; I chose the school because of cost and proximity to my home (it's about 3 miles away).
I had to take a couple of undergrad business classes as prerequisits, and have taken one MBA level class; I have been very impressed with the quality of the professors, as well as the interest and enthusiasm of the other students. The CCSU business school is under review for national accreditation (currently it is only regionally accredited). The CCSSU professors seem to float between U-Hartford and Uconn. I would recommend this university for business or for education.
I can't believe the guy that helped me get rid of acne when I was in high school, just by changing what I ate and excercising, is now a world famous author!
I actually saw him on Larry King last month (May 2005), and I saw his book on Amazon (The Perricone Promise). Anyway, he's a super nice guy and a great doctor, so I would definitely recommend his products - you can get them at nvperriconemd.com if you looking for great treatments for your skin.
The food comes out fast, and the portions are huge. And delicious, although I almost exclusively get the burrito platter. The service is excellent: example: when my wife and I brought our 2 year old, the waiter showed up with a cup of water for her in a spill proof cup within 30 seconds after we were seated.
He also was careful to place the spicy salsa on the other end of the table from her without us having to ask.
