When a friend came to visit, and he longed for a cigar, we visited the popular tobacco-haven, the Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood. Near the corner of Chestnut Street, the Tobacco Shop is a unique destination complete with its own humidor room that is chock-filled with cigars and tobacco products. If you know anyone who appreciates a fine cigar or a delicious pipe-smoke, tell this person about the Tobacco Shop.
If you want to select a cigar and stay awhile, you are invited to do so. The owner and staff are very friendly, and there is a special area with leather chairs that is available for tobacco connisseur to use. Rarely will you find this area empty as you browse the myriad of selections available for purchase.
The Tobacco Shop will assist you even if you are looking for a hard-to-find item. They have a wonderful array of pipes available for sale as well. You can't go wrong with anything you buy in The Tobacco Shop.
Visit this one-of-a-kind store if you are celebrating an event and need cigars, if you smoke regularly or infrequently, or buying a gift for a tobacco-lover. You will not be disappointed.
PROS: Outstanding service and stock
The Ridgewood Auto Wash is situated in an unusual spot at an intersection of South Broad Street and Ackerman Avenue. If you want to have your car washed here, and there is a line coming out of the driveway, park directly across the street and wait your turn to pull in. Many times, novices pull up and don't notice the long line of cars waiting for a hand washing at this popular car wash. Don't make this mistake!
The exterior soft cloth wash is the huge draw at this local car wash. This business has been around for a long time, and they know what they are doing when it comes to cleaning your car. For $11.50 you can get a full exterior car wash that includes a vacuum of your interior, washed windows, and a towel dry. You can leave a tip in the not-so-subtle bin labeled TIPS outside as you wait. If you are a big spender and wish to get the Ultimate car wash, you can spend $18 and they will shine your tires, put air freshener in your car, and do an underbody wash and coat.
The Ridgewood Auto Wash Company also offers car detailing and oil changes. There is a roomy office area where you can pay, purchase all sorts of gadgets for your car, grab a soda for sale, and wait as the staff works. The windows to the car wash area are clear so your little ones can watch your dirty car get a hose down.
I've had excellent car washes here but prefer to visit when there isn't such a long line outside. Select an off time any day of the week--they are open 7 days--and get your shine on.
PROS: Great service
The Market Basket is one of my favorite market destinations to visit no matter what the circumstance. If you are throwing a party and don't feel like dealing with the cooking, the Market Basket has delicious catered food for you to serve. If you are giving a gift basket for a celebration, the Market Basket will prepare a superior gourmet-filled basket that will wow any person you give it to.
Grab a basket and move into the shop. You'll notice the upscale candy area, the fresh fish, fresh produce, and unbelievable deli items. For example, the Market Basket's shrimp salad is made without fillers and with jumbo shrimp. It's the best I've tasted in this area.
Prepared foods, such as large salads and ready-to-heat main dishes like lasagna are also huge draws here. The meats are fresh and can be cut to order. I've barbecued their turkey burgers for guests and always received compliments.
They have daily deli specials which attracts a huge lunch crowd. The Market Basket is open 7 days a week, and until 8PM Monday through Friday. If you are tired of the over-processed foods you buy at the neighborhood supermaket, then visit The Market Basket for a special dining treat.
PROS: Superior food, many choices for your selection
In Franklin Lakes, if you take a drive down Franklin Lakes Road, you will find a large corner store called Clark's Hallmark Cards and Gifts. During a visit to the Market Basket in the same strip mall, I visited Clark's Hallmark and discovered a large Hallmark store with its own charm.
Clark's Hallmark is definitely one of the larger Hallmark stores I have visited. It's corner locale in the strip mall offers a lot of room for its stock. Parking is free in the lot outside, so you can park without worry and browse all you like.
When I visited, the store had a nice variety of graduation-themed gifts for sale. There are gourmet gifts, serving pieces, and decor. Of course, this is a Hallmark Gold Crown store, so the merchandise is mostly Hallmark. Prices are reasonable and there was a sale area for you if you like to bargain hunt. If you still collect Beanie Babies, visit this store! They had some for sale when I stopped in.
This large store is the perfect place to browse and buy a present, a gift bag, and a card for the recipient. You have to love one-stop-shopping!
PROS: Large store, Hallmark Gold Crown
My wife is into Halloween and Christmas decorations, so we tend to visit local craft stores during her search for new items to add to her stash. The Wyckoff Peddler, located in Franklin Lakes, is a long-standing visit we make during the autumn season.
Recently, the Wyckoff Peddler was acquired by a new staff. Everyone is very friendly and no one bothers you or hovers when you take your time to browse the products, such as Brandywine Collectibles. They have a large assortment of candles, ever-changing stock, and a large store that houses a variety of crafts. My wife likes primitive folk art, and she c ways find a treat or two for sale at the Wyckoff Peddler. They sell furniture pieces as well, such as side tables or hutches that are hand-painted.
As it is soon to be autumn, I am sure I will be taking a drive up to the Wyckoff Peddler for another look around this store. See you there!
PROS: Friendly staff, craft items
Biltmore Tuxedos was recommended to me by my wife when I had to select a wedding tuxedo for myself as well as my brothers who were attending the wedding from out of town. Due to Biltmore's professional and expert service, we were all garbed appropriately during my nuptuals last year.
Biltmore Tuxedos has a courteous and knowledgable staff that has years in the business. I was impressed that there was a decent variety of tuxedo options for me to try on that suited my tastes. I ordered my brothers' tuxedos based upon their measurements and when they arrived in town, the tuxedos fit perfectly. I appreciated that Biltmore Tuxedos made things easy with the tuxedo rentals during the busy wedding rush. With a deposit, we secured the suits, and we paid the balance once we picked them up. Complimentary button covers and cufflinks were included with our package.
Biltmore Tuxedos doesn't have that mass-produced, off-the-rack feeling that a lot of larger, less-personal shops have. I would definitely return to Biltmore Tuxedos for another rental or purchase, and I recommend a visit to this well-established retail and rental store for anyone in the market for excellent service and attention to detail.
PROS: Excellent all-around service.
When my wife needs maintenance work done on her 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport, Midas is the first place she phones. Located off of Goffle Road in Hawthorne, the Midas is professional, courteous, and efficient. We have used their services for many years and have no complaints!
Midas is open six days a week--call first if you wish to drop your car off for a tune up or oil change. They open at 7:30 AM so the earlier that you drop your car off there the better. There is a waiting area inside the office if you prefer to stick around and wait for the service to be finished on your car. Most often the work is completed the same day. They also sell windshield wipers, which is great if yours are worn down, which my wife's were a few months ago.
Midas advertises in local coupon mailings--you can get great deals on service packages, oil changes, and brake inspections. Personally, I feel that this Midas lives up to its reputation for fast, accurate, and customer-friendly service.
PROS: Fast service, good prices
Happy Tuesday is a boutique that specializes in gifts not found in large department stores. When you enter this retail space, you will notice the variety of items for sale that can decorate all areas of your home.
Happy Tuesday recently moved into Ridgewood, NJ, and already is crowded with browsers and shoppers looking for unique gifts. I was impressed with the range of prices for the items--it is possible to find candles, gourmet items, and paper goods for under ten dollars. They have an attractive glass case that houses designer pens. Ask the staff for assistance if you would like to see prices. In the same case were novelty, upscale cufflinks, tie tacks, and business card cases.
In the back of the store, seasonal decor and baby gifts are on display. Throughout the store, prices were clearly marked and there were a lot of different items on sale, such as a hammered iron and wood serving tray. I noted how many of the items for sale are crafted by artisans rather than large companies. This adds to the special feel of the store's merchandise.
Happy Tuesday is a boutique that fits right into Ridgewood's bustling main street. I have a feeling it will thrive for years to come.
PROS: Artisan produced items
Teneycks Service Center is gas station/mechanic shop right at the edge of Waldwick, NJ, just before entering Midland Park. The first thing I notice about Teneycks is the gas prices every time I drive by... they seem to have one of the cheapest gas around in the area, at least by a good 5 cents or more. I may be a stickler when it comes to saving gas but it all adds up in the end. I really appreciate Teneycks for being so competitive.
The second thing I notice is how busy they with their mechanic shop. I haven't needed any car service from them but from the looks of things, they garner a lot of business in their garage.
Unfortunately, because this is such a small station they aren't very many gas pumps, possibly only four that are available at a time. This becomes a problem when there is a line-up as it's in an awkward part of the town on a busy road with two main side streets on either side. The traffic can get backed up a bit.
The staff is friendly and have a good sense of humour as well. It makes it even more pleasurable getting into a small discussion with them.
I always keep my eye on gas prices, especially now as the rates keep going through the roof. Teneycks keeps it manageable even in tough times.
PROS: Cheaper gas prices
CONS: Traffic congestion
Blue Moon Mexican Cafe in Wyckoff, NJ is a nice small restaurant with a great ambience. It is always crowded whenever I pass by the place so I decided to check it out one day.
It is dimly lit to give it a relaxed, intimate setting and the food is good. One thing they don't do is hold back on the portions as it is plentiful. The staff provides the customer with friendly service, even adding their own reccomendations if you can't choose what to eat from the menu.
Even though it has the setiing of intimacy, lots of familes gathering to this place with their children in tow to enjoy a great family dinner. People are always lined up waiting at the door to get a spot in the restaurant. The alternative is to take out which they also provide as well.
The problem with this place is the location, in my mind. It's so tucked away at the back of a strip mall that
a) you don't even know that it exists; and
b) you can't even tell if it's open from afar.
If it was close to the entrance of teh mall, it would have made for a better visual setting.
PROS: Great ambience and food
CONS: Location is deceiving
