Point Pleasant, NJ is one of the getaways for people going to the Jersey Shore, and Jenkinson's Boardwalk is one of those places where they make a stop to have fun.
Lots of activities can be found at Jenkinson's Boardwalk. For one the arcade games are always a big hit no matter where you go. To me, it seems ironic to leave the comforts of home playing on a game station to go to the boardwalk to play arcade games. Many restaurants and sweets shops also make up the atmosphere of the boardwalk. The beach is a great place to catch some sun and water.
There is an aquarium situated with the boardwalk that's a great treat and quite big. Live shows take place with seals and whales. You also have the opportunity to feed them.
And of course the rides are what people come from, or at least the kids. Plenty of rides for them to enjoy.
Just watch out for parking. They do charge $10 or more atthe lots. Your best bet is to pay the meters if you can find a free spot.
This place is great for family fun entertainment and makes a great stop just to getaway from it all.
PROS: Fun rides, great games
CONS: Parking is a nightmare
Kailash Indo Thai Cuisine Restaurant offers both Thai and East Indian cuisines for your dining pleasure. This is a very daring venture as either one is exotic in its own right, yet here both cultures are represented through its food.
Located in Ridgewood, NJ, this restaurant is very exiquiste and charming giving you a sense of being in a foreign land. you can smell a light aroma of incense throughout the restaurant that acts as a soothing agent to calm your mind for relaxation.
The menu is plentiful with an array of dishes from both cultres for you to choose from, and it's very hard to choose just a few for you want to sample everything under the moon. Each dish is prepared with care as indicated by the presentation. The smells and tastes are wonderful making you salivate for even more. As with every restaurant of this type of nature, you can indicate the level of spiciness to your food that suits your own palette.
The staff is courteous and respectful, always friendly and very helpful if you have any questions about what to order or what is in each dish.
Growing up with an Asian background of Chino-Indo-Thai flavour, and coming from Canada where it is heavily prominent, it's nice to find these restaurants in New Jersey so I don't feel too homesick for food like this all the time.
PROS: Fantastic dishes, great ambience
I didn't think any drive in restaurants existed anymore until I went to Stewart's Root Bear at Tom's River, NJ, near the Jersey Shore. Not being too familiar with Stewart's Root Bear (I am from Canada), I was intrigued by what this place had to offer.
The old fashioned feel of a car-hop service was a novelty that was fun to witness again. Your order is brought to you and placed on your car window for your dining pleasure. The food is actually quite pleasant and tasty. For a family of three we barely spent $20 on the entire meal.
The service is fast and friendly. The funny thing is that only men work at this place. I don't think I saw a single waitress at Stewart's at all.
Famous for its root bear, we purchased two gallons of root bear to take home with us at a very good price. When that is all finished, just go back with your cannisters and order some more. They will give you $1 discount when you purchase another gallon.
I really had fun just eating at Stewart's Root Bear enjoying the whole novelty of a drive in. I just wonder what happens if it rains.
PROS: Good food and prices
Pizza is one of my son's staple meals. He can never have too much of it (I have yet to see it). That's why it's always good in our household to have a few pizza places at arm's length at all times. Natale's Pizzeria and Catering in Waldwick, NJ is one of those places.
This is a very popular pizzeria as indicated by the amount of people that frequent the place. I like watching them making pizza one the spot and this place doesn't disappoint. A few tables and stools are set-up if you wish to dine in but most of the business is either pick-up or take out.
Natale's is open 7 days a week and close late every day--10 PM ever day except Friday, in which they close at 11 PM. We found this helpful one night when we had a late craving for pizza around 9 PM and found out that the other pizzerias were already closed. Not Natale's.
Because they are some many pizza places within the radius, there is some heavy competition with prices. I always take full advantage of what is being offered for pick-up orders. A large chesse pizza will cost $7.50 from Monday to Thursday. There is also a pasta special of $4.95 every Saturday and Sunday as well.
I really enjoy the food moreso over here because the pizza isn't as greasy as others. Besides pizza and pasta, they also serve salads, heroes and wraps. The prices are reasonable. Catering is also available for any occasion no matter how large or small it is.
I never hesitate when placing an order at Natale's Pizzeria knowing that I won't be disappointed with the food.
PROS: Great food, opens late
CONS: Can be crowded and busy when try to pick up an order
I am very particular with how my hair gets cut and who cuts my hair. Finding a good barber is like finding a good mechanic--once you find one that you trust, you always come back for that same service. I've tried many barbers before acting on the suggestion of my wife and tried Maple Barber Shop in Ridgewood, NJ. I'm glad I listened to her because they gave me the haircut I asked for without a problem.
This is a popular place for men to get both a haircut and a shave as witnessed by the seats that are always occupied in the waiting area, complete with magazines and television. Usually there are two or three barbers on hand with up to six on very busy days. Repeat customers have their favourite barbers and will wait untill they are available.
They are a very friendly bunch and that's part of the charm--they know how to engage in conversation with different people.
I always find myself in capable hands whenever I get a haircut over here. A typical haircut for me will cost around $20 including tip. I'm tempted to have a wet shave done by them one day. From what I have seen so far they done a spectacular job complete with a hot towel and hot shaving foam to make shaving a much more pleasant, old school experience.
My only gripe is the amount of hair that is accumulated after time on the floor. I understand that they are very busy and can't always keep on top of it. Usually it's a good sign to see all that hair on the floor of a barber shop signalling a strong clientele. Still, it would be nice to sweep up more often than not.
PROS: Fantastic barbers, great service and haircuts
CONS: Can be very, very busy
De Pierro's Farm in Montvale, NJ is a fresh of breath air. It's sometimes hard to remember that parts of New Jersey has some luscious green area. They don't call it the Garden State for nothing.
This place is very spacious and sell a variety of freshly produced, organic-grown foods. Looking at the selection of fruits and vegetables is a testament to how fresh these foods really are. I marveled at the size of some of these fruits and was in awe at how reasonably priced they were as well.
There is also a greenhouse in the back complete with an assortment of flowers and plants of all kinds. The aroma of these flowers is just heavenly and I can see why people keep coming back to make purchases.
De Pierro's Farm is separated into areas to make shopping easier and more accessible. Aside from the fruits, & vegetables and flowers, there are pastries, fresh meats, bread, cheese and fish sections. One can expect to pay a bit more for the freshness ofthese items but when you take it home and cook it, it's worth every penny.
Upstairs houses an arts and crafts area with a variety of handmade goodies all for sale. The area is huge yet fels very disorganized. To me, there was no character to this section and it made me lose ineterst very quickly, expect for the electric train set that is on display.
The experience at De Pierro's Farm is very organic in nature leaving you with a sense of refreshed spirit and wonderment.
PROS: Great selections of fresh foods
CONS: Craft area is wasted space
Blackbeard's Cave is an entertainment center in Bayville, NJ. My family and I stopped in one day when we went down to the Jersey Shore for a little vacation.
The main attractions are the mini golf and go-karts. The mini golf course is not bad, sometimes pretty challenging, but it was nice and relaxing. The prices are very good and if you look closely, you can get some very good deals for a round of goal.
The go-karts are quite pretending to be on the Grand Prix circuit racing against other people. Lots of tunnels and bridges to make this course interesting.
Other activities include archery, bumper boats, batting cages, driving ranges, a ganster alley, jousting and other fun things to do.
Also on the lot is CB's Huntington's Family Restaurant to relax and eat after a hard day's work of fun activity. And for those who can't stay away from video games will be thrilled at the arcade that's attached to the restaurant.
Blackbeard's Cave isn't what I expected as it looked more run down. The mini golf and go-kart seemed to be the only two activites that looked more up-to-date but the rest needs a quick upgrade. Blackbeard's Cave does serve its purpose of entertaining but it really is geared towards a younger age bracket under 13 years old.
PROS: Some fun activities
CONS: Needs an upgrade
The Grenville Hotel & Restaurant was just what the doctor ordered when my family and I went to the Jersey Shore in the summer. We wanted a place that was close to the beach as possible. This hotel in Bay Head, NJ isn't hard to miss with its pink exterior.
Upon entering the establishment, I could already feel the charm of the place. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. Since we were there in the month of July, we took advantage of their summer special and booked a nice, family suite. I'm glad we did because we managed to get nice rooms for the price we paid. Plus, they were very clean, which is always a concern wherever we go.
The rooms aren't very big like you would expect from a hotel chain. Instead it has a very charming quality to make it feel like you are entering a bedroom. We managed to get separate rooms within the suite so our son felt he had some privacy as well.
This place also provides beach badges for you to enter the beach that is just behind the hotel. They also provide towels in case you need any. Just don't lose the beach badge or you'll be paying $250.00 for each of them.
The restaurant looked very elegant and well set-up. The attraction is eating outside on the deck watching the people go by. A swimming pool is also included in this hotel.
My only gripe was the parking. They didn't have a lot like other places for people to park their vehicles. We had to park on the street hoping to find a close place near the hotel. If you tried to find one during the day, it was next to impossible as people came early to park and go to the beach.
Overall, it was a very relaxing stay at the Grenville Hotel and I'm glad to know a place at the Jersey Shore that I would have no problem going back to in the future.
PROS: Charming and relaxing place
CONS: Parking is hard to find during the day
F & M Motorworks in Mahwah, NJ is situated in the Mahwah Business District. I became familiar with the place when my co-workers used to leave their cars at F & M during the day for maintenance and repairs.
Courtesy and friendliness is what you receive from this place. The mechanics are professional to the core making sure that your vehicle doesn't leave the lot in worse shape than it came in.
I really appreciate how they will do what is needed to be done. On top of that they will also point out other areas that can be a problem. You're probably thinking "Sure, because they want more money". In most cases I would agree, but at F & M they are genuinely concerned about your safety first and foremost.
The price may seem a bit expensive but it's not when you consider the time and parts involved. In the long run, I would pay a bit extra to get it done right the first time around than paying less for shoddy workmanship. Finding a good mechanic is tough which is why I trust F & M Motorworks.
PROS: Good service, thorough examination
CONS: Price can be expensive
I never expected to see a store like Sharon Quan's Gourmet in Waldwick, NJ. I always pass the place when going home and never knew what was inside. One day I decided to curb my curioisty and check out what was inside.
The best way to explain it is Chinatown housed inside this little shop. Sharon Quan's offers a lot of Chinese cooking products from food to rice cookers to accessories. This place is a dream when in need of some authentic Asian products.
I like the fresh, frozen foods ready for serving once cooked. No extra preparation is needed to make some great Chinese cuisines.
On top of that, the owner Sharon Quan also teaches cooking classes on preparing Chinese meals at the Ramsey School for continued education. Take her classes and you'll receive a discount at her store. This is great way to introduce yourself to the art of Chinese food if you are interested.
It's very nice to see a store like this. I just wish it was open longer on some days.
PROS: Great selection of products
CONS: Hours of operation sometimes sketchy
