I have a hard time paying full price when I can buy something on sale. That's why I buy most of my books at this place. This place has two stories. Most of the books on the top are new. The bottom level has a lot of used books. All of the books that I've purchased are in great condition, and the selection is pretty intensive. You can also buys CD's here.
PROS: Quantity and quality
I confess, I go to Barnes & Noble so my kid can play on the train table in the children's area. The one at this place is well kept and the trains seem to be a complete set. After my kid is done playing, I have a chance to peruse the books. This location is well maintained, neat, and orderly. I can always find what I'm looking for. I enjoy browsing through the bargain books and they always seem to have plenty here. I come here a couple times a month.
PROS: Well kept and neat
This place has some of the best fruits and veggies that I've seen outside of a farm or farmer's market. The prices are quite reasonable. I bought white nectarines the other day for .99 a pound. The store is mostly comprised of fruits and vegetables. If you are looking for fresh meat, you will be sorely disappointed. I wanted to buy steak and had to go to Magnini's down the block. Come to Monterey Foods if you are looking for well priced, beautiful produce
PROS: Great produce
CONS: No meat, rest of store kinda old looking
We stumbled onto this place when we saw the line of people waiting to buy a slice. Boy are we glad we did. They serve thin, authentic NY style pizza. Our realtor, a NY transplant also told us about Gioia's. He goes there every week to get his fix. You can buy by the slice or by a pie. Slices run less than $3 so you can try several. This place is so good, my hubbie and I can finish a whole funghi pie by ourselves.
PROS: Inexpensive, fast, and good
CONS: The no longer serve the meatball pizza
His sushi, sashimi, etc. are wonderful. I bought some bluefin tuna the other day for sashimi and it melted like butter in our mouths. You can't beat the price. We paid less that $10 for restaurant quality sashimi. Can't find that in a restaurant. The owner is an extremely nice guy. He always find time to chat and help me load my groceries into my car. He told me that they are expanding into a new location behind their current store. It's three times the size and they will be preparing their own rolls. I can't wait.
PROS: Neighborhood feel and world class fish
CONS: crowded store
Jodie's restaurant seats eight people max. I think that Jodie knows everyone that eats there personally. The first time we ate there, the counter was manned by one of the "regulars", who proceeded to give us the 411 about what to order. We were told that the first timer can order something off the menu, but after that Jodie will probably cook something up that he thinks you should eat. It's one of the most unique places I've ever eaten. Sat and Sun Jodie serves his world famous friend chicken. You have to have this for breakfast w/ his pancakes. Most weekends, the chicken is sold out before the day is through. No wonder, you'll be coming back for more once you've tried it.
PROS: Authentic home cooking w/ a cast of regulars that could be on a sitcom
CONS: Fries were soggy once, uncomfortable place if you want your space
Skytown is a wonderful community. We've only been there since May but I feel like it is home. There's no "attitude," people are warm and friendly. The staff is fantastic and creative. It has been the perfect 'first school' experience as the class size is very small (maximum 12 kids), very well staffed (at least 4 adults - 2 teachers and 2 parents), and very flexible in the sense that most of the morning is dedicated to free play, during which children are allowed to play indoors or out. The other hour is comprised of circle, storytime, snack, and lunch so she gets just a bit of structure, which we like. There is also always an intersting art project available each day as well as fun special activities like bubbles or water play outside. We have really enjoyed the Skytown community and I have been very glad to participate in the classroom, especially since this is my daughter's first experience being cared for by anyone besides her parents. Because it is a coop, there is a camaraderie and mutual respect. And it's fun because the kids are having such a good time and thriving! I recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking for a warm, nurturing, creative and flexible environment for their child.
PROS: Since it's a cooperative, you get to see your child grow and interact
I've used Azul Day Spa many times and enjoyed it. I've also given gift certificates to others, and they've loved it too. The people are friendly and the prices are extremely reasonable. I got prenatal massages every month from Karen. she is fantastic...very intuitive. She also has one of those mats that allows pregnant women to lie on their stomachs. I have also had non-pregnancy massages there from her and she is still fantastic. The amenities were very nice with a great steam bath and private showers.
PROS: Open rooms divided by curtains so you can hear other's
A total kid-fest. I can't believe it sometimes when we go, how many kids and babies there are! The bonus there is they have a bar, so (if you are at all indulging yet, or for your husband and friends), margueritas are available to soothe those jangling new parent nerves!
The food is pretty authentic and very tasty. To top it off, it appears to be prepared in a healthy manner, unlike many Mexican restaurants that I've been to. The prices are reasonable and the staff are always friendly and efficient.
PROS: Kid-friendly, good food, never a long wait for the food
We love Heidi. She helped us find a wonderful home in Albany in under two months...it was only our second bid! Additionally, she was able to negotiate a purchase price lower than the list price, which is virtually unheard of in Albany. Heidi has been in the real estate business for over 15 years and it shows. She's quite knowledgeable about Albany, Berkeley, and many other parts of the east bay. Give her a call if you want a real estate expert by your side during the often nerve wracking experience of buying or selling a home. We appreciated and were reassured by Heidi's calm demeanor, sage advice, and comforting insight.
PROS: She's very easy to work w/ and she communicates really well.
