The city of Youngstown always seems to get a bad rap. However, YSU is a great university with something for everyone. Located next to several cultural establishments, like the Butler Institute of American Art, YSU is fast becoming the univeristy of choice especially for those who live close enough to commute to the university. Class size is still not too huge for the most part and the classes offered are vast. The surrounding community really supports their university which is also a plus.
PROS: Growing university that offers a lot
CONS: Location not the best
Kent State's Salem Campus is located on a very pretty campus outside Salem, Ohio. The people in admissions have always been helpful. The instructors are first-rate. Class offerings are extensive for such a small campus. Hate the cost of textbooks and the buy back policy here is not so great. How can a $100 book be only worth $20 three months later? Wish this campus offered more bachelor's degrees, but it's a great place to begin a college career.
PROS: Friendly, close college community
CONS: Bookstore buy back policy is poor
This is a must attend event in this area of Ohio. Last year's show was first-rate. Dealers set up in a wooded area in small permanent buildings or in open areas. Buyers wind their way through the woods visiting each dealer along the way. Everything from fine furniture to funky collectibles can be found here. This show also serves fantastic food and features an antique tractor display. If the rain stays away, this show is a great deal of fun!
PROS: Walking in the woods shopping for antiques and collectibles
If you collect because of the hunt, then you must visit Vivian's! Yes, the store houses new collectibles, but the back room and basement are treasure troves of bargains. Vivian, the store's owner, loves to attend auctions and she "disperses" the extras that she buys through this shop. You literally never know what you might find and it changes daily. Love, love, love this place!! The staff here is also first-rate!
PROS: A treasue hunt!
CONS: None at all
Columbiana Antiques Gallery is loaded with merchandise - three floors of stuff. Everything is clean and clearly priced. Store personnel are availalbe to open locked showcases. The merchandise does not seem to rotate that often and it would be nice if the sales people knew more about the place (names of other dealers, which dealers are willing to bargain, etc.), but overall, this is a great shop to visit.
PROS: Lots of merchandise
CONS: Store personnel do not seem to know the policies of other dealers there
Be sure to make a stop at Mainstreet Antiques. The people there are knowledgable and willing to help in any way and the merchandise is varied, clean and priced to sell. Owner Beverly Adair is a class-act and her store reflects this. Everything from furniture to pottery and smalls are available and the merchandise changes regularly.
PROS: Wonderful antique shop
CONS: none really
The instructors of this school try hard to keep interest up, but it's hard to do when the videos they have to show are SO old and out-dated. The videos are actually insulting to people's intelligence. I know it's hard to make driving information interesting, but Best Driving School would do well to invest in current informative learning materials.
PROS: Good instructors
CONS: Out-of-date materials and videos
Being a collector of vintage china, I love visiting factories where the type of china I collect is still being made today. Hall China not only offers tours, but they have a retail outlet store right next to the factory called the Hall Closet where I can find pieces not necessarily sold retail. The china is high quality and cheap. This is the place to go to set up house or add to a collection.
PROS: great china at a great value
The vets at the Lisbon Vet Clinic take the time to not only know their clients, the pets, but their owners as well. Dr. Doug Wiley and Dr. Fred Bennett are exceptional when it comes to telling it to you straight, be it good or bad news. When one of our dogs died of a stroke, not only did they console me, but they sent a sympathy card to our home, as well.
PROS: Well-staffed, return calls, deal with emergencies quickly
Inner Circle Pizza is a well-kown meeting place for groups after sporting events and other functions. It offers fantastic pizza and exceptional wings - go with the garlic ones. Prices are fair and the atmosphere is purely informal which makes for a fun option for a quick bite to eat.
