I went to Maksou for a haircut and ended up getting a cut, color and a makeup consultation! Their prices were great for a high-end salon, and I walked out feeling wonderful. The stylists were all friendly and talkative and really knew what they were doing. I'm thinking about going back for a manicure/pedicure, another service they offer here.
I worked at Bright Horizons for a short time in college and everyone was wonderful here. It was such a good experience working with the kids and the other staff. We spent a lot of time doing physical activity, running around outside and playing on the playground. I think it's a great, safe place to take your kids where you know they'll be taken care of by competent people who love children.
Camp Starfish is an amazing camp for children with emotional and behavior problems. Many of them have been emotionally and/or physically abused or lived through some kind of trauma and this camp is a great place for them to start the healing process, really bond with other kids and learn a sense of pride and self-esteem. The kids do lots of water activities, sports and crafts.
My roommate and I used Latch Key Pet Services to take care of our dog while we were gone on vacation and we were very pleased with the care he received. The prices were a bit steep but we didn't feel comfortable leaving him in a kennel so it was worth it. They fed him, took him for walks and played with him in the park. Split between the two of us the price wasn't bad but for someone living along it may be too expensive of a service.
My roommate and I hired someone from Boston Pet Sitters to take our dog for walks during the week that we were both gone from the apartment. It was great for him to get out of the house and we felt we could trust the sitters at Boston Pet Sitters to be gentle and professional with our dog. They apparently did a great job because he seemed happy when we got back!
One of my best friends graduated from Belmont High and I used to visit her at school for functions and things sometimes. Belmont High is in a beautiful location and has great staff and faculty and programs for arts, sports and after school activities. My friend liked it here a lot, thought the teachers were very cool and the classes were difficult but taught her a lot.
I have worked with several kids that attend Savio Prep and most are pretty happy with it, although it has grown to where the student/teacher ratio is a lot higher than it was in previous years, which is something I think a lot of the students dislike. It's not the most diverse student body population but that makes sense based on the location.
Boston Trinity Academy is a relatively new school. There is not only a focus on religion but also on fitness, language and culture, and the arts. They seem to foster well-rounded, well-behaved children who develop a love and devotion to Jesus Christ, but who are also open-minded and educated about different world religions and experiences.
Boston Renaissance Charter School is a good public charter school with great afterschool programs and wonderful instructors. They are very focused on the arts and letting kids get creative, which is very important to me as a child advocate. They have great dance and music programs. They have a nice library as well.
My cousin attends East Boston High School and I often hear her talk about crowded classrooms and grumpy teachers, but that seems pretty standard as far as high schools go! She feels safe and respected as a student here and is learning and that's the most important thing. I've heard complaints about East Boston High from other students about crowding and teachers's resources being burndened because of the number of students at times.
