Parking at Levee plaza has been a problem for a while: due to lunchtime crowds at daytime, and moviegoers at night. Now the problem got worse: lunch nowadays is apparently 7am to 9pm (so far as I can see by the numbers of people), and the cars outside of movie theater's lot (rather small) get towed, so you can't park by the Neon Cactus anymore.
The Wabash Landing Parking Garage absolutely saves the day for me, since ANY place on Levee Plaza will validate it's ticket - so it's free! And if you ARE on Levee Plaza, then presumably you're going to one of the places in this strip mall anyhow. So, problem solved. I just wish more people used the garage, instead of creating traffic jams out of nothing right in front of the bookstore!
Willowbrook offers rather good deals throughout the year, and it's a nice complex with a bus to campus and a lovely foundain in the middle that's lit up at night (and for me, that alone counts for a lot). Their kitchens are HUGE and the environment, overall, rather college-relaxed and friendly.
One part that's not stellar: the managment. If you have a contract with them, have it in writing, and keep copies of ALL you checks to them. Some people I know got slapped with a $375 per person (in a 3-person apartment) for a "painting fee" BEFORE moving in. Needless to say, this was NOT mentioned on the deal they were getting. Then, 4 months after they signed the lease with the deal (and they did pay the "painting" fee, BTW), the manager of the office changed and conveniently "forgot" all about the "summer months free" deal!
So, get it in writing, or, if you are an inexperienced leaser get someone who is to monitor your interaction with the place.
PROS: nice spacios place, free bus to campus
CONS: fees! Management!
The people at catering at PMU a rather nice. I suspect that they get quite a few weddings, so while they are ready to charge exorbitantly, they also can accomodate low-budget events.
The very name "wedding" adds a lot to the bill, so if you just call it "dinner", the price drops 40%. The only thing you lose is white gloves on the waiters and long tablecloths (who cares!?).
The menu was great, they had no problem giving us a free tasting beforehand, and accomodated vegan and wheat-free guests seamlessly.
PROS: Flexible, friendly
CONS: Need prodded for information and suggested alternative routes
This is the lawyer that you don't want.
We have contacted him about our case in 2003. He said that the case would be no problem (even though we have forseen difficulties after reading all relevant legal documents), and took the deposit of $300. We sent him all the info and everything, and started to wait. After 6 months we started worrying, and tried to track him down. He was in Florida on vacation, so we only got hold of him and made him make an appointment with us 1 year after the deposit!
At the appointment he told us that he looked into relevant legal documents (the same ones we did, only a year before, before coming to him) and he thought our case was hopeless, and would like to drop it. He wouldn't give us the deposit back, though.
We were so disgusted with him, that we proceeded to take the case to the immigration on our own, without any lawyer, because we didn't want to trust anyone again. And our case succeeded!!!
This guy doesnt' know ANYTHING about immigration law. If you so much as read the stuff on USCIS website that pertains to your case, you'll know more than he does. We though of taking our story to the Bar of Indiana, but who has the time... But the least we can do is warn others!
The apartments are rather nice, though can be small. Great carpeting (choice of white and beige), large open balconies (with outdoor lights), fireplaces (even in small apartments), outdoor pool in summer, and pretty laid-back landlord, who doesn't insist on re-drafting the lease with a 1-year obligation every time you decide to stay a bit longer. He also had no surcharge for short-term (6 month) leases! The pet one-time fee if pretty high, but then it's not too much.
The landlords of this place are incredibly greedy and constantly try to raise prices for apartments. Keeping pets is so expensive, that you'd wish you bought a Mercedes instead. The buildings on the river are also in danger of flood every time Wabash level goes up. The laundry situation is awful - the laundry automata are outsorced, so you have to buy a $3 card, which is a pain to load, breaks often, and then you have to send it in somewhere for a refund... Which is never ever got for the 4 cards I sent.
The only serious drawback of these apartments is the fact that they have strictly enforsed parking. You friends can't park in your lot even if they came to see you - they are in danger to be towed. Your car HAS to prominently display a sticker with Crestview permit - and it has to be stuck outside on the back of it. They don't care what it takes to remove it afterwards!
From other standpoints, the prices are decent, the landlords calm, and the closeness to campus unsurpassable.
Bach Chorale singers is a local community choir, which is amazingly large and good. There's a few professionals signing in it, which doesn't hurt; it literally attracts all of the local talent, and there's a lot around such a big place as Purdue! They have classical concerts all throughout the year, a special Christmas celebratory event, childern's choir, and scholarships for talented singers.
It took me a while to track this place down, nobody new where to find a coin store in Lafayette. But it does everything that a coin collector needs - from coin maintenance and evaluation, to selling every state quarter that's in circulation :) So if you're lacking a particular mintage, that's the place to do. Great selection of antique and international coins as well.
PROS: wide variety
CONS: hard to find
If you are at a loss as to what to get for a person, who has everything - swing by this little store. They have fossil stones, butterflies in glass cases, every type of candle imaginable, and tons of other little things that you don't find anywhere else. Their stock of stuffed toys is amazing - a separate little cove, sorted by types of animal and sizes :)
PROS: great selection
