If you want to get an excellent French manicure, this place is for you. The owner, Shari, is a real artist, and she loves doing nails. She doesn't use any stickies on the nails to line the different colors for French - just paints on as it is, and it all turns out amazingly even! Also, a French in this salon costs the same as any other manicure - $13. Every other place I went to charges extra!
PROS: Excellent French manicure
I can't believe that a world-class cooking store is tucked away in a little strip mall! I went in accidentally, and goodness, have I learned about what supplies a cook can have! I just had to buy some on the spot. They were also getting ready for an Indian Quisine lesson there, the smells were amazing! Apparently, they have regular lessons there, and one can sign up by topic - online or by phone.
The only downside for me - they didn't take AmEx cards there, only Visa and MasterCard.
PROS: store and learning place in one
Vons is a nice place to browse, and also buy some textbooks. They wont all be there, but its friendlier than university bookstore. They have good specials once in a while, and its definitely worth checking out. I also like to buy calendars there, the selection is rather funky and amuzing. Also good travel book section.
PROS: relaxed atmosphere
Every time I see a great haircut at Purdue, chances are, its been done by Omar. Hes the best at K.J. Nutt and Friends; however, everybody else there is not far behind, so if he is booked, try someone else, you won't regret it.
I have gone to expensive salons (Vidal Sassoon in Chicago, etc.), and guess what? Omar does better haircuts, and they cost half of what youd pay in an expensive place (just $40 without the tip, and worth every penny).
The overall experience at MedSpa is very good. Calming interiors, excellent choice of spa music, its warm and the staff is friendly. After your service they always hand you a bottle of water and a tiny chocolate - for that special touch. Massages there are always amazing (I had a Swedish and a Hot Stone). The facials, though, are hit or miss, and the last time they were also trying to make me buy some products, which in my opinion were to harsh for my age!
PROS: excellent massages, great interiors, cosy
CONS: pushy about products, facials can be painful
The quality, selection, and price of flowers at Rubia are absolutely amazing. The quality, selection, and price of flowers at Rubia are absolutely amazing. They have weekly specials, and where else would you find a dozen roses for $6? The selection there is amazing, and they always have some exotic blooms to spice up your bouquet, even if you buy flowers there every week (I do). New flowers come in on Wednesdays, thats your day if you want the freshest ones. Also, thats when you can get last weeks blooms for half price.
PROS: price, selection, quality
I take all my dry cleaning to Sparkletone. They are always on time, and theres only been one time that they ironed a shirt a wrong way (it was a womens blouse, a designer item, I guess too complicated). Otherwise, all mens shirts are a good value at $2, and they even took off coffee and makeup stains off my wedding dress. Good job!
CONS: hard to park
I took my cat there for all her shots. They staff there are nice, they put you in a database, and send you reminder cards when the time for your pet's next appointment comes around. The reception room has a couple of cats milling around - very well taken care of, they just live there, and one I think is a rescued cat, she has only three legs, but is really friendly and goes around just fine.
It's always a pleasure to deal with people who know what they are doing. Computers by Campus is just a place where you'd go to find them. They have lots of parts in store that youd have trouble finding elsewhere (a case for a laptops hard drive, anyone?), even though the prices can be a little higher then in chain stores. But then, its worth the money saves the bother.
To top it off, its close to campus, so a Purdue student can get there in no time at all.
PROS: knowledgeable staff, excellent inventory
I have brought my high-heeled shoes in for a small modification: all they had to do was shorten the straps that lead to the ankle strap. I explained that I need it for a wedding 2 weeks later, as I was the maid of honor. They said they'd call when it was ready, and it should be in 3 days.
A week later I called: it was not. I called again in 2 days, and went to pick them up. The ankle strap on one shoe was connected upside down (so the buckles on both shoes were to one side!). They didn't notice that, and when I showed it to them, they didn't see it as much of a problem, told me to wear it to the wedding like that and bring it back. I explained that I couldn't do that and asked them to re-do it. When I came in another day later, they re-did it, but they also made stitches all over the thin straps on both shoes, they didn't look at all like the pretty formal shoes they were! It was horrible. The owner didn't think anything was wrong with their work, though. I very much regretted ever going to that place, and if you care about your shoes, I advise you find another place!
CONS: late, awful attitude, killed my shoes
