The Karsten golf course is in a beautiful location on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe. It's off of Rio Salado, just east of the big Sun Devel stadium. It's well priced, perhaps because it is part of the university. The course is nice and well kept. I'm not an expert, but I was impressed with the course and had a great time. I'd recommend giving it a try, however, don't expect it to be the fanciest course in the area.
PROS: Good location and low prices
Sunsplash is one of a few water parks in the area. It is quite large, so kids love all of the options that they have. It's almost a guarantee that
your kids will be tired out by the end of the day. A visit to Sunsplash is a great way to beat the heat, but be sure to wear sunblock. We've never had a problem with parking. You can buy snacks there or there are tons of restaraunts nearby if you want to eat lunch or dinner. The only downside is when the lines are super long.
PROS: Fun entertainment for when it's hot outside
CONS: Sometimes there are too many kids running around
Crackerjax is conveniently located and is a great place for kids, or even for a couple looking for a new activity. There is mini golf or batting cages. Parking has never been a problem for us. You can buy food there. The facility is also well taken care of and clean. The prices are moderate.
PROS: Nice facility that is well maintained
CONS: Sometimes crowded
Salt River tubing is a great way to cool off in the summer. Most people go in big groups and rent an extra tube just to through a cooler on. Avoid going in the summer since the sun is too strong and wear sunblock no matter what time of year. All of our friends seem to get sunburn, but I wear SPF 50! I wouldn't recommend this as an activity to do with kids because I think that it could be a little dangerous for them.
PROS: Fun and good way to cool off
CONS: I wouldn't bring smaller children for safety reasons
In the Arizona heat, you need a trip to Big Surf! It is a huge park with fun water attractions. Slather the sunscreen on your kids and let them splash until they are tired out! Parking is sufficient and you can buy food on site. If you have a lot of kids though, this can be expensive trip.
PROS: great activity for when it's hot outside
CONS: can spend quite a bit
The Kiwanis Park is a well maintained park with an affordable entrance fee. It is free to walk around the park, but the wave pool is only a $5 entrance fee. There are locker rooms to change in and they sell snacks for a reasonable price. It's a good alternative to Big Surf if you don't want to spend a ton of money.
PROS: Nice location and a clean, safe park
A trip to the railroad park is a must for every parent with young children. The park is reasonably priced and set up for families. The train goes through part of the McCormick ranch park. There are also some other small rides, food, and souveniers. At Christmas time, they decorate the train path for the holidays and they do a great job. Even if you have already been there, it is worth another trip at the holiday time!
PROS: Fun and reasonable prices
I have a Nissan Altima which needed new brakes, so I decided to try Just Brakes. I found their website, printed a coupon, and went to the shop. The employees were so nice and helpful. They explained everything for me. When I said that I wanted the cheapest possible brakes, the guy told me that he recommended more expensive ones, but what he would do is install the cheaper ones. Then, if I didn't like them, he would only charge me the difference of parts for the more expensive ones. Turned out that I was happy with the cheap ones, but it was a very nice offer of him. I am sure that other shops would never make such an offer.
PROS: Great customer service
CONS: There isn't really much to do within walking area while you wait
I had my oil changed here because they sent coupons in the mail. I was satisfied with the speed of their service and the quality of their work. The only problem that I had was in finding the shop itself. It's actually on the North West corner of Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd and Hayden Rd. There is a Mobile and a music store that kind of block it from view, so look for those as landmarks.
PROS: Low prices
CONS: no major problems
Sleep America is a local area mattress store with numerous locations throughout the valley. When I bought my mattress, I went to a dozen stores to compare quality and prices. I wanted a higher end queen size pillow top bed. Sleep America had the best price for the quality that I was looking for. The sales person that I had was very flexible in mixing and matching the box spring for the mattress to lower the price. I definitely recommend putting them on your list of places to check out when you are looking for the mattress. The company is local to the valley here, but they have a good reputation.
PROS: good prices and friendly staff
