Gymworld is a great place to send your kids for gymnastics. The owners are both professional and friendly and the kids seems to have smiles on their faces at all times. Knowledgable staff, affordable rates. I have friends who have kids that go and highly recommend.
PROS: Professional, fun and affordable.
If you eat steak, get the kona crusted filet. One of the best I've had. A lively fun place, friendly service, classy. I happened to dine with a great group which definitely enhances the experience.
PROS: Good atmosphere, great steaks, wine selection
CONS: A bit loud so perfect for groups not dates.
Mike's Bikes has a knowledgeable staff passionate about cycling and mountain biking. They've got a good selection of equipment and once or twice a year have a discount sale. I bought a new bike there during one of these sales. They were very helpful in the selection and getting me set up. On the weekends there is always a crowd of riders there visiting before they head to the trails.
PROS: Smart and friendly staff, selection
I just played a golf tournament at this course. (it was a shotgun tourney--I'm no pro). The course is well kept, greens are nice but leveled and fast. Definitely challenging, some nice par 3s. Water hazards on a few holes.
PROS: Well kept, challenging
CONS: It's in Tustin, green fees
A huge oval bar with over 100 beers on tap provides plenty of choice. I like the Eclipse (Guinness and Hefeweizen)--its like a black and tan. Tasty.
They have a terrific happy hour with half price appetizers. Perfect for a ballgame on an empty stomach.
PROS: Beer selection, happy hour
CONS: Need one in San Francisco and/or Marin
A terrific location and creative facilities make this place a great one for a getaway trip. They have an outdoor pool (small, less than 10 seats available) as well as an outdoor beach bar with a fire pit (very cool). Rooms very nice and well-sized for a W Hotel. Concierge friendly and knowledgable
PROS: Location, Scene, Concierge
This is a great facility (aside from the entrance being in a parking lot). The locker rooms and amenities are first class.
However, for a massage look elsewhere. I was uncomfortable from the moment I met my masseuse. She was old, but more important, they have some strange policy (it seems) by them putting their hand on your back while showing you to the massage room. It was a very disturbing beginning to a session. Perhaps they were trying to make you feel at home with the hand on the back, but they actually direct you to the room. It freaked me out and I could never relaxed.
PROS: Locker rooms, amenities
CONS: Freaky "hand on back escort" policy
Connected to the W Hotel, this is one of the best spas you'll find. The massage was top notch and includes extras like lotioned warmer socks. (yes, a guy can like it too, trust me). The masseuses are professional and friendly--they even mail you a postcard after you've left saying thank you. If you're willing to flip a few extra bucks for a massage it's worth it.
This hotel has a great location in midtown east. The lounge is relaxing during the day with wi-fi (important). The rooms are small, typical of a W Hotel, but they are hip and modern. Strange, the beds are sometimes very wide and too short--not good for a tall person to sleep in. The Whiskey Blue bar is also in this hotel for a trendy happy hour or night out.
PROS: Location, Trendy
CONS: Expensive food/drinks, small rooms and beds
Safeway recently opened their newly remodeled store in Strawberry Village in Mill Valley. I like it. It's clean, large, well priced, and has great selections of produce, breads, wine, and desserts. I'm much more satisfied with this store than any others.
PROS: New, Remodeled, Clean, Selection
CONS: Not as many gourmet/organic items as a Whole Foods
