When faced with the choice of neighboring fast food joints, I goto Melody's. It's not fast food, but there are no waiters to suck your wallet dry. The food here is real authentic. And it's no surprise because great food run in this family's blood.
PROS: Perfect little spot to enjoy a great meal in.
Whenever I visit my buddy over in North Hills, we gotta stop by Tacos Michoacan. They have huge burritos stuffed with so much great food it makes me mouth water just thinking about it. Their tacos are very good, very crisp and crunchy. I recommend the Combo #5. It's one of their giant burritos topped off with homemade guacomole and tomatos and some great mexican rice and refried beans with cheese. Make your day a happy one and your stomach a full one.
PROS: Great, fast, cheap mexican food. Just like my grandma used to make in LA.
I love going to Zigs. The owner is always smiles and has a great attitude, and really makes you feel welcome in this cozy little diner. Their trademark burger 'The Bullet' is something like 1/4 pound of meat on big fresh buns. They also have excellent milkshakes that are the thickest and sweetest around. What I always get is the Steak Sandwhich. Great tasting steak on a french roll with juicy tomatoes, grilled onions and globs of mayo. Another favorite of mine is their Fried Chicken Sandwhich. When you can't decide between lunch or dinner, this fits the bill perfectly! Enjoy!
PROS: You can phone in your order ahead of time if you just want to pick it up.
CONS: They do close a little early, before midnight on the weekends. So go early!
I thank my lucky stars every day after I discovered this little gem in Northridge. This is authentic, no-nonsense Italian food at it's best. Prime Italian is the place to go to relax and enjoy good, old-fashioned Italian cuisine in the traditional style, in a quiet setting as well. I always get the Chicken Alfredo. It's Pasta and mushrooms in cream sauce with cut up chicken breasts. Truly To die for! Just the food alone is worth the price, but the casual dining atmosphere is a great little treat. Great place to take the one you love.
PROS: If you've had a stressed out day at work, they deliver so you can enjoy!
If you've ever had the good graces to have visited down south, you know they do all the right things when it comes to BBQ. And this resteraunt in Mission Hills does the south justice.
A great place to take the family and order a mile high plate of food. A good plate to order is the "Combearnation" lunch wich is a BBQ sandwich (beef, pork or turkey) on garlic toast and a beef rib. It's served with a choice of baked beans or coleslaw and costs under 10 dollars! Awesome food that will have you patting your gut, and loosening your belt! Enjoy!
PROS: Some plates will have you taking some food home to eat in the morning!
CONS: Depending on where you are in the valley, it could be a drive, but worth it
The Fishery features fresh fish and seafood, cooked and served Southern style. They also have great sides like yams and red beans. The great thing about this place though is the atmosphere. It really is low-key and a great change of pace. I try to stop by when i'm in Pasadena.
PROS: Relaxed environment, laid back people.
CONS: Sometimes it's hard to choose from the stuff on the menu.
Sometimes when I see those KFC commercials, I start to laugh. "They call that chicken." It's not right. When you want some fried chicken done the right way, you need to head on over to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. The one in Hollywood is so small and crowded, so I like to goto the one in LA. Not much better but a more relaxed atmosphere, more real. Whatever location you choose to visit, you will get real southern food, fried and extra greasy.
PROS: This food will leave your mouth thirsting for more!
CONS: The crowded room almost takes your mind off of the heart attack coming up.
When I want fresh toppings on a pizza, I reach for my phone and call The Pizza Man. The used to be in Van Nuys on Louise and Vanowen but moved to Saticoy and Lindley in Reseda. He specializes in thin crusts and great cheese. The extra large pizzas are the best because of the way it's cut. They cut slices in the middle of the pizza so there's no crust, just bread, cheese, and toppings. Not only is his pizza good, but they have the best jumbo fried shrimp that you can get delivered to your home or business. Delicious. Enjoy!
PROS: His pizza and shrimp combo make it a very happy day.
CONS: The only con is they don't have more of them around the valley.
So I was out with my friend and his family the other night and like clockwork his kids start moaning about how hungry they were. Let me just start this review with a little backstory. My friends two kids are notorious for being real picky when it comes to food. So naturally, I try not to be around them and food at the same time. But I had to agree with the little tykes, I was starving too. We've all seen those commercials talking about how the Pizza Cookery is a classic, and I sort of had my doubts. But this place knocked my socks off. And not only that, but my friend's kids gobbled it up with no complaining. I know that kids like pizza, but i've seen these kids complain about a rival pizza place's crust being too hard, just finding any reason to complain. But these kids seemed to love it at this place! Maybe it was the sawdust on the floor. Or maybe it was the video games in front. But it was probably the awesome pizza they brought out for us. It was bubbly and golden brown. The kids dug right in and their faces lit up with smiles as they sank their teeth into the first bite. I, being one of the only grown-ups at the table decided on getting just a salad. They weren't lying when they said their salads make a meal. Their salad was very fresh, and all their ingredients tasted wonderful. I must admit, seeing that pizza in front of my face make me a little weak, I had to give in. I had 3 slices, and by the end of the 3rd slice I had to ask for a doggy bag to take the rest of my salad home. It was truly a great night. My buddy's kids are still clammering to go back there!
PROS: Great environment for kids to have fun and eat great food.
CONS: Sometimes it does get a little busy at night. Avoid it by eating lunch.
We all know when you're sitting around the office trying to come up with a brilliant idea for the boss that sometimes having a little 'food for thought' isn't such a bad idea. And what do they say is the ultimate brain food? Chinese does the trick for me. And not just any Chinese Food. Oriental Express offers free delivery within a three (3) mile radius and a minimum purchase of $10. They have a great lunch buffet for an excellent price. Everything they have their is delicious, including their orange chicken (one of my favorites), and their sweet and sour pork. But my personal all time favorite is their Fried Rice either with chicken, beef, shrimp, or combo rice with all three. The fried rice includes a few veggies and bits of egg. And for only $5.25, this in my opinion, is the best fried rice in the san fernando valley. Enjoy!
PROS: Free delivery within 3 miles and $10 purchase
CONS: I have honestly not found anything wrong with them yet.
